Ok match, if you like watching kvitova. Pretty much all you get in her matches, just a winner or error. Sam played her role, but not well enough in the end. Struggled to keep pressure on return in the 2nd set and that was pretty much it.

Really great week and great year for Samantha! She could have served a little better but I guess serving to a left handers BH for the majority is just something she's not used to. Nice fight towards the end there, too.

Well done, Kvitova! She's really unplayable when she gets on a roll. Still undefeated indoors for the year, hope she can complete her perfect record tomorrow in the final. ;)

Nice to see this match go the distance, especially seeing as I saw it as an easy 2-set win for Kvitova heading into it.

Sam did well. It was a nightmare match-up for her and she drew out the errors from Petra to clinch the 1st set. Too bad she couldn't keep up the form.

Everyone was quick to write Sam off before the match but she proved she could match it with Kvitova.

Eventually Petra was too good with the accuracy and pace of her shots.

FYI

Sam had more errors than winners in this match.

Petra only had one more error than winner (and she was much more the aggressor in this match than Sam).

Also I guess you would just forget the exquisite lobs, net play, drop shots, leaping smashes, serving etc, that Petra displayed, but you want to make her play seem normal. OK

She just spotted Sam a set, put the screws on, clamped down, and knocked Sam off the court. That's all. Petra didn't even break a sweat or seemed worried. She just handled her business. You s should be happy Petra gifted Sam that 1st set.

Sam was a bystander in this match (even in the first set). Check the stats. :tape:

It's puzzling to me how someone can hit the most amazing winners from the most awkward positions has such terrible finishing. It's a chronic thing, which is why she tended to hit in the middle once she gets a short ball, because it's safer. It's inexcusable really - if you are a top player you should know how to dump the ball in the open space. Even the ones she makes barely clip the line. After the horror in that first set, she stopped going for her forehands and started rolling them in.

The story of the match for me: Petra playing at like 25%, hardly going for anything and still almost bagelling Sam.:help:

NID really. When Petra can rely on the slice serve + anything groundie combo SO OFTEN, there is nobody (other than herself) who can stand in her way. The drama came from her doubting whether her putaways would land in or out . Overall though, good composure in some key games in the 2nd and when serving it out.

As for Stosur, disappointing performance. I know this is the worst match-up for her, but she could have done more with her serve. As effective as the kicker was, she need not have used it 90% of the time. Also, does she think just hitting mechanically will get her anywhere in such a match-up? Any time she got the ball within 10 feet of the sidelines, she was instantly putting Kvitova on the defense. Think, Sam... spin can be used to create angles as well, not just height.

Kvitova was lucky Stosur's first shot on her last service game was called out or she would have been down 0-15 with the pressure building. Stosur played well at the beginning and end of the match. Kvitova was a little too strong in the end ... but I am proud of Sam's week and the fact she is still putting herself in contention despite being written off by many these past few years.

I can't stand that stupid yelp Kvitova gives after she wins a point. If I was a player I would be tempted to jump the net and hit her over the head with my racket! But she is a very talented player.

You are entitled to your opinion, but I think that's a gutsy performance. Like you said, on paper it is one of the worst match-ups for Sam. But from winning zero points on returns in the first few games, she worked her way into the match and took the 1st set.

The kicker is predictable but she did make some astonishing unreturnable serves using it.

It was sticking with her kicker that kept her in the match more than anything. Very easy to panic after the first few games and revert to a hastily devised plan B, but she stuck to her guns and served pretty amazingly for most of the match IMO. But early in the third set she was just not getting quite enough spin on it an Petra killed it for a few games. In her last 2 service games it worked really well again, but it was too little too late.

An obvious tactic to - as a lefty - pound Stosur's backhand, but at certain moments Petra was focusing on it too much disregarding other ways how to win points. And that footwork...
Still, she is in the final and that's what really matters. Tennis fans in Czech republic are very proud of her, she picked it up where Vaidisova dropped it.

See, I know it is a fantastic serve, but she needs to recognize the moment when a tall, powerful opponent starts to get good solid hits on returns. She cannot afford to be on the defensive when hitting one of her 2 best shots: her serve.

Well we're probably going to have to agree to disagree on this, but I wouldn't call the kicker a defensive serve. Basically it worked throughout the match whenever she got it right. For a few service games she didn't get enough on it and it kind of plopped up into Petra's hitting zone, but whenever she gave it enough bite Petra didn't handle it. It wasn't that Petra was reading it, if that was the case she would have killed it with increasing frequency as the match went on. But when Sam got it working again in the last couple of service games Petra wasn't handling it any better than she was in the first set. I know that Sam has more serves than she used tonight, and she serves quite differently against different opponents. She clearly felt that using the kicker a lot was her best play against Petra (pretty bold actually when you think about it: everybody was predicting before the match that Petra would have no trouble handling it at all), and given the results she got from it I would say she was 100% right. In the end it wasn't enough, but it kept her in the match for 2 hours.

GOAT-RA in the 2nd and third set.

Could of been from the start of the first set, if she didn't get carried away trying to hit every ground stroke and ROS for a winner.

But she knows who she can beat (that day), and usually adjust her game, after trying to swat every shot for a winner, and she did.

As far as some of the missed running/angled net shots, particularly from her serve out wide; I think she had the ghost of Jankovic, Wozniaki, Zvonareva and Radwanska (in her mind) running a lot of those balls down if she hit them in the middle of the court. I don't think she realized, though Sam's speed is improved, she's not as fast as those other players, therefore she didn't need to always go for the lines.

Good Luck in the Finals Petra.

Kvitova has been far from her best this entire tournament. She's been fairly conservative, hitting more shots CC instead of going for screamers down the line and has many times looked to reduce overall velocity for consistency, depth and width to try and get up to shorter balls. Said that, she's many times been coming to the net and hit smashes, volleys, serve and volley, many good tactics there.

As someone who has followed Petra since late 2007, for me it is strange to see her hitting with so much less power (although obviously it's still not weak) and doing other stuff because it's not as visually impressive, but I think this shows she is capable of working and improving on her game, add more elements. I just hope that when the time comes that she needs to really crank up the heat and go for her shots (like another GS QF, SF, or F) she can call up on it too.

She looked very nervous and tight today, she isn't playing loosely, and that nervousness is really odd considering she won Wimbledon this year. She isn't at her best, but it's been enough to win with four top ten players in a row, only losing one set. I hope she can finish it off tomorrow.

Yeah.

Even though she went to the net 50 times, successfully drop shotted Stosur several times, used all types of spin, grips and angles to hit the ball away from Stosur cross court, while she both served and returned better than Stosur did.

For the record Petra had more winners than unforced errors. Sam had more errors than winners.

She was just a bystander in this match. Petra was the driver.

If you don't believe me, just read Sam's comments to the Associated Press (and I'm sure her local papers as well).

Not Petra's finest match by any means... she's kind of gone downhill since her matches against Zvonareva and Wozniacki. But it's the sign of a champion that she's scrambling through matches even when way below her best. Well done Real #1; good luck in the final :yeah:

Even though the entire match was on Petra's racquet (either her great play or her shit play), credit to Sam for mentally sticking in there and taking any scraps she could. Didn't use to like her at all, but she's really won me over the last few months. If she keeps this level of confidence and concentration up, she really has the potential to dominate clay for the next few years and win 2 or 3 RG's.

Congrats on being a Petra fan for so long. Interesting comments, by you.

Normally, she would of smoked Sam 6-0, 6-1 or 6-2 that final set (and of course would of never let her in that first set). I guess I can maybe agree with that.

My guess, is that after everything that happened to her during the American Hardcourt season, this tournament means a lot to her. Can you blame her? She went threw her first tough period, after winning a major. If she can win this title, it shall/will do loads for her confidence going into 2012 (hell even a loss would as well, just less so). Plus, look at the stage she's on now? Big difference now!

But I think some of the type shots had to do with the opponents she was playing (pushers, some of them who had beat her before, that test her patience). I think some of her rushed net shots today, off the lefty serve out wide, came from the ghost of Jankovic, Wozniaki, Zvonareva and Radwanska running some chip shots down.

Now if Petra never adapted her game, she could of never won so many titles this year, cause your shot isn't always on, and you're going to miss some if you don't set it up right. She's learned.

It also depends on the opponent. I guarantee you tomorrow, she will not only serve out wide, but she'll serve down the T alot, cause Azarenka's forehand is worse than her backhand, forexample.

Let's see how she does tomorrow.

this was a total bore. sam really didn't do much beyond chip backhands into play and try and squeaze errors out of kvitova. i'd have liked to see sam step it up more (and to be fair she did and looked like a proper challenge but only from 0-5 final set). kvitova was all over the place.

Nice goings for Petra...those lapses closing out matches needs to work on them. For Stosur..well the big prize was already won, sooo..

:help: Is this the Kvitova that is supposed to be revolutionizing power tennis?
looked like a generic ballbasher today.

 Did you watch the match? I am totally Sam's whore, but this match was Petra's. From the baseline, the service line and the net. She's got some improving to do, but a generic ballbasher she ain't. And that is why she is so much better and will have so much more success than the rest of her mediocre generation.

So disgusting and boring to watch. She is such trash on court. During this match I realized Ivanovic isn't worth my time. KVITOVA welcome to #1 on my shitlist.

Nice fight Sam :)

 at you actually thinking anybody on this board gives three fucks who is #1 on your shitlist.

Keep 'em mad Kvitty. :hearts:

Didn't get to see the match, but the second and third sets seemed very routine (apart from the wobble at the end). Hope she can win the whole thing in her YEC debut but from the comments here she didn't play too well today. Seems to be really nervous which I don't quite understand but hopefully she plays okay in the final.

Kvitova barked her way into the F. She is definitely setting herself apart from the other girls here. Li, Sharapova, and Kvitova all were in contention for player of the year until the YEC imo..... now its pretty much a lock for Kvitova to take it. She wins here and she will be within striking distance of number 1.

That was BAD.

Stosur had the correct game plan (taking no risks from the baseline and doing whatever was required to keep the ball in play) and executed it to the best of her abilities. Yet it was only her very high 1st serve % in the first and Kvitova giftwrapping Stosur a break after being up 40-0 that earned her the first set.

Early in the second, Kvitova seemed out of the match - threw away a whole return game with wild errors and then found herself facing a BP in the very next game. Steadied herself somewhat, managed to play in GOAT mode but rarely for more than consecutive 2-3 points (let alone games), and eventually in the third set her flat shots began messing up Stosur's until then solid baseline game.

Kvitova's footwork was appalling. She can't rally with anyone for more than 2-3 shots, and even then she's likely to spray the ball into Asia. Stosur's block/chip ROS and other such junk were driving her crazy, and she missed a shitload of easy putaways due to clumsy footwork.

Thank you. :)

Sam is the ONLY player so far to steal a set off Kvitova at this tournament. She did it not by her usual style of power dominance (because it doesn't work against Petra due to match-up problems), but by serving well and pouncing on any lapses from Petra.

It's been a really good year. From a crap start in January, Sam is now tour-leading 7-3 against top 5 players in 2011. Can't wait to see what she can do in the Australian and clay seasons next year.

"It's amazing how much she's been able to improve," Stosur, who suffered a third consecutive loss against Kvitova, told reporters. "I think I got beaten by a player who played very well today. She'll make a flurry of errors but then she'll flip it over and you'll see a streak of winners."

Um, because they're completely different players with different physical and mental attributes who are at different stages in their career?

No, Li is a good player. You don't just randomly waltz into two consecutive GS finals, as well as another GS semi.

She's just not playing well at the moment, and Sam is a spectacularly bad match of for her.

I really really enjoyed this match! Two aggressive, exciting players with probably the best serves in the game outside of Serena. Yes, the unforced errors were high, but I'd rather watch a match with players going for shots than the boring grunting slugfests we often get on the WTA.
Kvitova impresses me so much. She isn't quite a complete player - some spectacular misses at times. But I like that she shakes off disappointing shots or even losing that first set. Far too many head cases in women's tennis! I really hope she takes off in 2012, we need a genuinely great player after the Williams/Henin/Clijsters generation to take the game by the scruff of the neck.
Sam has always been talented - she really should have won RG last year, but that awesome defeat over Serena at the USO seems to have given her a lot of confidence. Kvitova always had the game to beat her, but Sam didn't fold. It is odd that her previously FEARSOME forehand is looking a tad ordinary right now though...
This semi was by far the more entertaining one (I fast forwarded through Vika/Vera) and I sincerely hope Petra can win the title. She's the most talented player in the tournament.
