View Full Version : The BEST SINGLE SET you've seen someone play

Paul.
Oct 29th, 2011, 02:04 PM
Are there any sets that stick in your mind as being the best that a player has ever played? Include clips if possible. I'll start...

Tatiana Golovin: Set 1 vs. Justine Henin, Stuttgart Final 2007, won 6-2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frTKKqpzNdA

I've never seen Tatiana play with such confidence. Every ball looked on for a winner and she hit plenty. Definitely Golovin at her very best. Unfortunately, Henin came back to win the next two pretty comfortably. Sorry about the music by the way. In no way do I see how it fits in with the clip!

Jie Zheng: Set 2 vs. Serena Williams, Wimbledon Semi-Final 2008, lost (5)6-7

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw7SA589eGw (from 8:00)

It seems strange to choose a set that she lost (especially when she's won sets vs Serena before), but I think a lot of people expected Zheng to be killed in that semi-final, and the first set looked like this would come true. Zheng only hit 3 errors but still lost 2-6. However, even with Serena on top form and serving unbelievably well, Zheng grew in confidence, taking returns ridiculously early and even earning a set point at 6-5 40-30*. She got a second serve and for a moment it seemed meant to be, but the return painfully clipped the top of the net. That, along with the double fault on match point were a real shame, but it doesn't take away from the incredible high quality of the set!

Others? :)

if it is a best single set where both players played well, than pierce vs danillidou wim 2003 takes it. apart from a few doubles for danil it was amazing. every point was a winner.

mary's GOAT stats at the end of the match were something like 35 winners to 5 UE's.

The second set especially... Serena did not miss a single first serve and to be honest I am surprised Martina got even two games. In fact Martina just kept laughing to herself the whole second set, she couldn't believe how Serena was playing.

The 2nd set between Mary Pierce and Venus in the quarters at 2005 Wimbledon, Venus winning 10-8 in the 2nd set breaker. The 2nd set showed tremendous tennis between the two after Venus bageled Mary in the lst. Mary raised her level in the 2nd and the two went at it in tightly contested games including that breaker. It was great tennis, as Venus told Mary at the net....."great match".

Hingis/Venus USO 1999. 1st set 6-1, Martina had something like 17 winners and 2 errors, against someone as fast as Venus that is just riduculous, in the SF of a Slam no less...

....also I agree w/whoever said Serena @ USO 2001 semifinals, I mean 100% 1st serves in @ 110+ mph? By far the best serving performance EVER by a woman. She was also on fire from the back of the court. Serena has never played a match at this level before or since. Some might refer to the AO 2007 finals against Sharapova, but in the 2001 USO, Serena was not playing a slow erroneous ball-basher; instead she was playing a very astute and consistent defender, so to put in that kind of performance was something else.

I actually think Maria played better in the first set in that AO08 match, even though the scoreline was closer. Because Justine actually played really well and was near her best in the first set, but Maria just came up with better. I remember some absolutely AMAZING rallies towards the end of that set, with Maria coming out on top in most of the long rallies somehow... I haven't watched any ATP recently, but back when I did I can name three occasions in which I saw a player hitting everything as hard as possible and everything went in for a full set:

The first set of Giraldo d. Ferrero in Rome 2010 1R.

The third set of Mathieu d. Cañas in Montréal 2007 1R.

The second set of the Djokovic d. Wawrinka Vienna final in 2007.

For furious high-pace baseline rallies with neither player backing off and just cranking it up I have never seen anything come even close to Blake d. Davydenko at the 2006 YEC group stage and to a somewhat lesser extent Blake d. Davydenko at the 2007 Cincinnati SF.

The closest I have ever seen a woman play to a "walking on water" set like those first three I mentioned was of course Stosur in last year's Charleston final. Before that, I'd have said that the best set of tennis I had ever seen from a WTA player was the one Vaidisova won on her 2R loss to Sugiyama at Beijing in 2006 (no, really). Kvitova's wins over Vinci and Wickmayer at Wimbledon this year were like a nonstop highlights reel.

Hingis was impeccable in that first set against Venus in the USO SF from '99. She was taking the ball stupendously early and man-handling Venus around the court like she was some crappy amateur. It actually prompted Venus to raise her game to a pretty formidable level just to compete.

Serena has had some scary sets also, quite a few to mention. The one that strikes me the most is that first set vs Mauresmo at RG 2003. She was like a Tigress on a killing spree.

Venus played a flawless first set against Pierce - Wimbledon 2005. Of course, any Venus meeting against Radwanska (except for Luxembourg 2006 and the one-handed slice incident), Venus apparently can discover patience against Radwanska but no one else. :o
