View Full Version : Which of the remaining four YEC semifinalists do you want to win?

Oct 29th, 2011, 09:52 AM

Petra Kvitova, 21, CZE
* Kvitova is making her Championships debut; she is the first woman from Czech Republic to compete in singles at the Championships since 1998 (Novotna); a Czech woman has won the title 3 times: Novotna (1997) and Navratilova (1978, 1979)
* Kvitova is bidding to be the first Czech to reach the final here since Novotna won the title in 1997, and the 5th overall (Navratilova, Sukova, Mandlikova, Novotna)
* Kvitova is the only player yet to drop a set; 20 players have reached the WTA Championships final without dropping a set, most recently Henin in 2007
* Kvitova is bidding to be the 7th player to reach the Championships final on her debut and the first since Sharapova in 2004
* Kvitova is projected to rise to a career-high of No.2 unless Azarenka wins the title; she would become just the 3rd Czech woman to rank in Top 2 (after Navratilova, Novotna). Kvitova finished 2010 ranked No.34
* Kvitova has won 5 titles this year : Brisbane, Paris [Indoors], Madrid, Wimbledon and Linz; only Wozniacki (6) has won more titles than Kvitova in 2011
* Kvitova is 17-0 at hard/indoor tournaments this year, including her 3 matches here
* On Thursday, Kvitova scored her 2nd win vs. a reigning world No.1 (d. Wozniacki), having also defeated Safina at 2009 US Open)
* Kvitova won her 50th main draw match this year with her opening win (d. Zvonareva), the 6th player to this year to do so; overall she has 56 match wins this year, including ITF results (Nassau in March; Prague in May)
* Kvitova is 1 of 5 lefties in the Top 50 (along with Safarova, Kerber, Martinez Sanchez and Pervak) and 1 of 6 Czechs; next weekend she will lead Czech Republic in its first Fed Cup final (vs. Russia at Moscow) in more than 20 years

Samantha Stosur, 27, AUS
* Stosur has advanced to the semifinals for the 2nd straight year
* Stosur is bidding to become the 3rd Australian to advance to the final after Reid (runner-up, 1972) and Goolagong Cawley (winner 1974, 1976, runner-up 1978)
* Stosur won her maiden Grand Slam singles title at US Open (d. S. Williams in final) becoming the first Australian woman in over 30 years to win a Grand Slam singles title; the US Open singles winner has won the title at Championships 2 of the last 4 years (2007 Henin, 2010 Clijsters)
* Including her wins vs. Sharapova and Li here, Stosur is 7-2 vs. Top 5 ranked opponents this year; before 2011 she was 7-21 vs. Top 5 opponents; she has won 6 of her last 7 meetings with Top 2 players
* Stosur can rise to No.6 in the WTA rankings by reaching SF if Zvonareva fails to advance today; she will rise to No.6 by reaching the final (No.5 if Zvonareva fails to win the title) and No.4 (defeats Zvonareva)or No.5 (defeats Azarenka) by winning the title
* In 2010 Stosur became the first Australian since Mandlikova in 1989 and first Aussie-born since Turnbull in 1985 to participate in singles at Championships
* Stosur won back-to-back doubles titles at the Championships in 2005-06, both with Raymond
* Stosur has now defeated Serena Williams (US Open final) and Sharapova (Championships RR) this year; the last time a player defeated both S.Williams and Sharapova in the same year was 2009 (Dementieva and V.Williams)

Victoria Azarenka, 22, BLR
* Azarenka is making her 3rd consecutive appearance at Championship and has advanced past the round-robin stage for the first time
* Azarenka is bidding to be the first Belarusian to reach the WTA Championships singles final; she is the 2nd player to represent Belarus here after Natasha Zvereva reached the Championships 6 times (1988, 1990, 1993-95, 1998), reaching SF in 1995
* Azarenka is projected to return to her career-high ranking of No.3 if she advances to the final, the highest singles ranking ever by a Belarusian; she will rise to a career-high No.2 if she wins the title; she has been ranked in the Top 5 since the week of April 11, 2011
* Last Sunday, Azarenka won her 3rd singles title of 2011 at Luxembourg (dropped only 22 games en route to title); she also won back-to-back titles at Miami and Marbella; she has 8 WTA singles titles to date
* Azarenka jointly owns the season’s longest winning streak at 12 matches (Won Miami and Marbella, won 1 match at Fed Cup) with Clijsters and Serena Williams
* Azarenka reached her first-ever Grand Slam SF at 2011 Wimbledon (l. Kvitova)

Vera Zvonareva, 27, RUS
* Zvonareva is bidding to reach WTA Championships final for 2nd time after 2008 (l. V.Williams in 3-set final)
* Zvonareva is the most experienced Championships competitor of the semifinalists; this is her 5th appearance, having also participated in 2004, 2009 and 2010. This is her 3rd SF at the Championships
* Zvonareva is projected to rank No.7 by reaching SF, and will go to No.6 by reaching the final (No.5 if Stosur loses SF); she is projected to return to No.4 if she wins the title; she will finish 2011 ranked in year-end Top 10 for the 4th consecutive year
* Zvonareva has most hard court wins on WTA in 2011; she is 43-14 on the surface this year
* Zvonareva is looking to advance to her 5th singles final of the year; she won her 11th and 12th career singles titles at Doha and Baku; she was runner-up at Carlsbad and Tokyo (both losses to A.Radwanska)
* Zvonareva has advanced to the SF 10 times this year; only Wozniacki (11) reached more SF
* Zvonareva and Sharapova are the only 2 Russian players to reach the final here with Sharapova’s title win in 2004, the only Russian success to date

Personally, I'm hoping for Sam. If she manages to, by some miracle, get past Petra, it'd be a blessing to have pigeon Vera waiting for her in the final, but it'd be an otherworldly accomplishment if she were to turn it around and take out Vika in the final. I'm not an idealist, though. Would just love to see her back up her Slam title with more hardcourt success, and can't wait to see what next year has in store for her. If not Sam, then Petra winning would make me very happy too. Just not one of the other two, please... :sobbing:

Kvitova. Then she should dethrone Caro as #1 sometime early next year.

Hoping for Sam, but wouldn't too much mind any of these girls winning. In fact Sam, Petra and Vera were my top three preferences going into the tournament, so I'm pretty happy with this lineup (although it would have been nice for Sam to meet Vera rather than Petra in the SF).

Stosur is the most likeable.
Azarenka has the best game imo - but her attitude...

I can't stand Kvitova because of her grunt/shriek - most annoying sound at the moment in womens tennis.
And Vera has so many mental problems, I don't want her to win.

I'd like to see Kvitova win and Azarenka booed for the rest of the tournament.

Oct 29th, 2011, 12:57 PM
Anyone but Vika.

I want her to make the final and then get demolished. I want tears.

Oct 29th, 2011, 01:00 PM

We do not want Zvonareva in the final. :help: She'd rather be at the closest mental health facility.
