View Full Version : Somewhere in the world, Monica Seles and Martina Hingis are laughing

In 1992, they were merciless in complaints about Monica's grunting especially at Wimbledon to the extent that she had to unfairly force herself to stop grunting in the final. In 2011, almost all WTA players grunt and much louder than her.

In 2000, they were merciless in complaints about Martina's slamless year and No. 1 ranking although winning percentage-wise, it was actually a phenomenal year, and with 9 WTA titles including a YEC and an extremely consistent showing at the Grand Slams. In 2011, we have Caroline Wozniacki.

This is exactly what the tennis world deserves for not knowing how good we had it.

Martina's 2000 was by far the best year that any players has ever had without winning a slam.

Caroline's last half of last year and first half this year is nearly as good. Incredible consistency and nonstop winning.

Queen Monica and Princess Martina could care less about today's journeywomen who call themselves tennis players

Of course, one may blame Monica for brining grunting into tennis as well.

This is exactly what the tennis world deserves for not having instructed umpires top penalize Seles for hindrance every time she screamed during a rally. "Unfairly force herself to stop grunting" my arse. She was unfairly allowed to get away with the rest of the time.

You've just put Monica Seles on a level with Jimmy Connors for sportsmanship. If that's your idea of a defence then don't take up the legal profession. Not that Connors did it to anything like the volume or degree that Seles did.

You're either deliberately thick or too stupid to get the point. And no I don't need nor want to take up the legal profession.

No I get your point. You are saying that she wasn't the first player to make a noise when hitting the ball. But she was the first player to scream like a banshee every time she it it.

So true, 200% agree with all of that!

The game of womens tennis would love to have a #1 like Hingis in 2000 now, even without a slam title. Mind you 2000 version of Hingis would of course win a slam, probably more than one, in the current field anyway.

Seles's grunts were background elevator noise compared to some of the absurdities we have today. Not only the top players, but some players I have never heard of sound like a combination of a locomative train or sneezing. I dont know how they stand to be on court with each other when I cant even stand to listen to many of them through a TV screen.

How little did people appreciate what the game of tennis had back then, instead digging for pety faults.

It was tongue-in-cheek. I didn't even say that Hingis is ugly, just that the pic was not the best and what it reminds me of. No double standard. :bigwave:

Yeah Hingis was awesome in 2000, but she had started to become a mental case (choking, passive play) in the biggest moments ever since Graf broke her confidence in half @ RG '99. A slow, steady downward spiral for the next three years.

Case in point, even though both matches were after said RG final -- in her 1999 USO semi against Venus, at 5-3 30-15, Hingis hits one of the most amazing clutch shots of her career (one-handed around-the-net-post winner). In her 2000 USO semi against Venus, at 5-3 30-15, Hingis hits one of the most choking shots of her career (miffed overhead). Sigh.

That's not true and you know it. And you still don't get the point. Nobody complained when Connors was doing it. Nobody complained when Seles turned pro. Why make a big deal out of it when she was on a 27-match Grand Slam winning streak?

And Connors was "making a noise" but Seles was "screaming like a banshee"? Sexist pig.

Im really over the "old days were so better" thing.

Why is the domination of players a good thing?
The depth of competition today is far, far deeper. It makes tournaments unpredictable and exciting.

She lost 2 finals (AO, USO) to Linds, won 1997 Wimby final against Jana but lost to her in Wimby SF a year later. She apparently thought that SF is the real final, no offense to Tauziat

There is an amateur cartoon video made by someone in youtube, it's called 'The comeback' featuring Serena and Justine. Apparently the creator doesn't realize that Kim whipped Serena's ass in USO SF 2009, he/she thought that it was a Final lol. No offense to Caro :help:
