View Full Version : Is Kvitova almost guaranteed "Player of the Year?"

I think she's pretty much got this in the bag now.

She's improved her ranking from 34 at the end of 2010 to a guaranteed position in the Top 3 and is a safe bet for YE#2
She won her first GS at Wimbledon
She won four other titles, including Premier Mandatory Madrid
She's made it to the SF of YEC and looks pretty good for the finals

I really don't see who else is going to take it from her.

Li started on fire, but has done nothing since her FO win (except for bloody Maria! :fiery::lol:)
Wozniacki was #1 for 51 weeks of the year, but has no slam finals, poor YEC performance and only real big title was IW, which is matched by Petra's Madrid
Serena and Kim had good results, but hardly played a full season between them!
Azarenka won Miami and could win YEC, but made no Slam finals
Sharapova... Lets not even try to pretend it could happen!

The only one who I think even stands half a chance is Stosur, and I can't see them giving it to her over Petra even if she wins YEC, because she did virtually nothing until her US Open win, crashed out early in the other three slams and has no other titles.

Anyone else think it's Petra's for sure now? Or do you think it'll go to someone else? :)

Yeah basically I agree with what you mentioned. The only thing that stops Petra from winning is Stosur winning YEC but still her chance of winning POTY is still higher.

and could she win the most improved player as well?:oh:

Stosur's still in the tourney though ;) she could still win the tourney and then she'd be the fave for the award.

bark bark deserves it.

I agree as well. Who else if it's not her?

Patrick345
Oct 28th, 2011, 07:53 PM
Stosur can take it away by winning the YEC and probably going to #3 in the world. Otherwise itīs 100% Kvitova. For the sake of Wozniacki I hope the WTA/ITF arenīt going to do Wozniacki the disservice of giving it to her.

She still needs to beat Sam I think

But Petra still has more titles and higher ranking(?). Petra basically wins on every surface. Very deserving winner if she wins.

If Stosur wins the YEC, the very highest she can get is #5 anyway. Caro, Petra, Maria and Vika already have more points than her maximum, not including any potential extras for Vika or Petra.

What's Petra and Sam ranking points now? If Sam wins and Petra losing semis?

Current standings (before results of Vika/Marion)

Maria Sharapova 6510
Victoria Azarenka 6090
Li Na 5720

What would happen in that scenario? I still think Kvitova gets it, because her stats are still more impressive than Stosur's. Slam + 4 titles to Stosur's slam + 0 titles

Even easier, Petra wins. NID. Sam only has one title then vs 5 for Petra.

i didnt like kvitovas huge dip in form in the us swing

got destroyed by petkovic twice, lost to dulguru at the us open and was overall very very disapointing.

How many points are still available for Sam? I was just guessing, when I said #3.

She is. Petra is likely number 2, unless she loses to Sam and Vika wins the final

Sam can get no higher than #5 even if she wins YEC, because Caro, Maria, Vika and Petra have already passed the max she can get.

Coconut91
Oct 28th, 2011, 08:02 PM
Yes. Even if she loses now and Sam wins the YEC, it doesn't take away all the titles Petra's won throughout the year, on all surfaces. I think she's the clear winner. Whatever happens here won't make Sam's year better than hers.

450 if she wins the final, 360 if she's runner up. (There are no additional points for losing in the SF! :))

You get 370 points for going 1-2 in the group and only 450 extra points, if you win the semifinal and final?

Itīs like Wozniacki works the system to perfection.

Tell me about it. Whilst I understand the idea of additional points for qualifying for the YEC, it seems a bit silly that players gain over 200 points if they go 0-3.

Well thatīs 810 points. So she can easily take Vika and go to #4, not #5 like killerqueen said.

Oh really? I thought the 360 was RU points! :D My bad.

Stosur's maximum points is now 6395 then. Still not enough to pass Caro, Petra or Maria, but it could be enough for #4 if Vika loses her SF.

If Petra wins YEC, she'll only be 115 points behind Wozniacki, though does have title points to defend in the first week of 2012.

Petra max points - 7370
Vika max points - 7130
Sam max points - 6395

Well and Stosurīs first eight months should count in Kvitovas favour. The "only" reason Stosur would be in the running is the fact, that she would have won two of the five major titles.

It did sound a bit weird in my head that a YEC winner would receive less points in the final than a regular Premier title winner, but I gave up making sense of it!

I'll wait till the YEC is over, and/or Petra's contribution to it, then I'll come back and answer this question.

As this stage, Petra's got unfinished business to take care of!!

You do make a whole lot of sense though.

Ignore what I posted here about Lisicki and Gajdosova! I was looking at massively outdated statistics! :D

Bartoli however could still very easily snatch the "aces" award from Gajdosova!

It's awards season for the WTA. Media votes are due Friday. Has anyone made an airtight case for player of the year?

Interestingly enough (unless they updated it), the broadcast from Istanbul list Petra's record as 58-13 now, the WTA website should have it at 56-13 (they listed two less wins at the start of the tournament, than the TV Broadcast). I probably know why there's a discrepancy (Fed Cup matches maybe): not that I really care, but either way those are great records and winning percentages for Petra.

But she still has two matches to win, so I will have none of this. :) :wavey: :)

Oh. You started this thread, for that vote. We can vote in this? I hear them promote it all the time on the ESPN 3 broadcast. I thought the were just running their mouths.

Where do you vote?

Who emptied it? It was the crazy Wozniacki fans, who wanted to tell people Kvitova has been mentally broken by her Grand Slam title, because she received some beatdowns from Petkovic and suffered one really bad loss against Dulgheru.

The same people that wrote off Stosur, because she lost to Kirilenko twice. Now she is in the YEC semis.
