It should have been three sets.

Maria just has no confidence. Especially when she was up 4-2 with break points to go up 5-2, and then serving for the match at *5-4, and then being up 4-0 in the tiebreak.

Then she had break points to break back for 5-5 in the second, and all she needed to do was to get the ball in play a lot more instead of forcing the issue too much.

Anyway, this match just shows that Na Li's game is far superior.

Good luck to Na Li. Maria, might as well go out with a win against your next opponent.

Watched it here and there because it was awful.

Embarrassing, Maria. So many chances in the last game, and she just waits for her Li's choke? That's not what I like to see from her.

Both of them should be happy that this was not the last matche in the group, because they would go 0-2 and would have no chance. But I still think Stosur is going to beat Li.

Maria looks dejected and beaten nowadays before the match even starts. She's very low on confidence, and I don't think she'll hang on if she doesn't win a major in the next couple of years.

Great to see Na finding some form. She's a terrible player to watch though. Her game isn't as low % as people pretend ,and she still manages to botch the most basic strokes. When she's on though, she's very effective.

She'll probably beat PID. An on form Li Na vs Kvitova is easily the most intriguing final. Her game will make a lot of trouble. Sam, Vika and the 3 clowns in the red group are a foregone story, I think.

Maria..please retire and do something else worth while :help:.

It's obvious you're completely out of shape, out of everything to be a competitive tennis player in the top 10.

You're in love with your fiance which is fine but you can't do both and have your cake and eat it too. I have no idea how you're even ranked #2 in the world. The last 2 matches were so embarrassing on so many levels and no way could have ended that way couple yrs ago or even back in 03/04 before winning a slam. These 2 players Stosur and Li would have been destroyed by the old Maria.

Shvedbarilescu
Oct 26th, 2011, 05:59 PM
Very well played by Li. Pointwise their was nothing in it. Li Na won just one more point than Sharapova. But when there was a point that both players absolutely had to win Li virtually always prevailed. She was vastly more strong mentally than was Sharapova who sprayed the ball frenquently when she simply did not have the luxury of being able to miss.

Not a surprising result at all either as Li clearly loves playing against players with pace and there is no one better in the game at handling pace and then redirecting it with even a little extra added on. Fun match.

Congrats Na

Honestly both players are not in very good shape now. Erratic hitting, mentally not strong. They showed some briefs amazing shots sometimes, but overall the performances were mediocre. Na has a chance to advance if she somehow get more focus and find her hitting range. Hope Maria get her game back together and start strong next year.

With Li Na, we will never know. She doesn't have a real issue, it's all just in her mind. She has a big game but it's prone to inconsistency. She can suddenly find her form again after winning a particular big match.

Stosur can still give serious trouble to her game, but I doubt Vika will have easier time on court. Vika might just give Li more match preparation and confidence.

Maria? It's pointless for her to stay in the tournament. Without her serve, she looked very vulnerable. Just trying to qualify to SF and then lost is not the right mindset for a champion like her.

dsanders06
Oct 26th, 2011, 06:03 PM
Nid. I guess it was just too optimistic to think Maria would be anywhere near her best after having to rehab an ankle injury. Rest up and practice hard over the offseason.

Glad to see Na finally getting her shit together... even if her game is still erratic, mentally it was a far better performance than her recent efforts. She has a great shot of making the semis seeing as Azarenka is siuch a good match-up for her.

She is not eliminated on a mathematically level, but it do requires some pretty special results

1 Li Na Winning all her macthes with 3-0
2 Stosur to lose to Azeranka (moderate but in straitgt)(this is the only requiremen Who i plausible)
3 Sharapova to win massive over Azeranka

I know she's injured but these last 2 matches have been torturous to watch. I knew she would still lose the set despite being a break up, just like I knew she was gonna yesterday in the second set against Stosur despite being 3-1* 30-0.

On the plus side, at least she's making it competitive. Even Crappypova can take it to you, despite not having a serve and only a 50% chance of keeping each ball in the court.

This is definitely true. I have to admit, I was kind of lulled into a false sense of security (I thought she'd grind her way to the final, though I never thought she would beat Kvitova) by the memory of her making the final of the YEC back in 2007 with no match practice ... but, if you look at her career in full, that tournament was definitely an exception rather than the rule, because as you say she usally requires atleast one, maybe two tournaments to regain her feel and footwork.

Most of it comes from non-Maria fanbase though (which surprises me and actually impresses too). And the point about her needing a couple of events under her belt before kicking into gear is a valid one methinks. Yeah, the ankle hasn't been that serious but Maria said herself she wouldn't have returned to the court so quickly if this wasn't for YEC

Generally I feel like these two losses create the least negative reaction since a very long time. Heck, I see some old Maria haters guard laying off on her to some extent. I love you all, folks :silly:  ;)

Maria continues to struggle with her game and putting away leads. :( Lack of match play is very apparent.

the excuses should stop. li didn't have the best preparation either. in fact, sharapova came with a match under her belt while it was li's first match of the tournament. the same people that find excuses were raving before the tournament how sharapova was going to cruise through the field because of her past experiences. bottom line is she lost to a better opponent who had beaten her 3 straight times.

agreed. so what? just trying to figure out why she wasn't at her best ffs what's the harm in that?

The ankle and rust are mentioned for good reason though. Sharapova is not the type of player that comes back off a layoff (however long/short it may be) and does really well right off the bat (mostly because she lacks the speed that players like Clijsters, Venus, Henin, and Serena have). That's why her run at the French in '09 was so surprising. However, I don't think that her two losses can be blamed on just the ankle injury/layoff. She has been in pretty poor form since Wimbledon. Yes, she won Cincinnati. However, her level of play was pretty far away from her level in Rome-Wimbledon (aside from the Stosur match in Cincy).

Fuck you Maria. There is no reason for her serve to be this shitty. Give Robert Lansdorp a call during the off-season.

Maria  ... Maria is one of the hardest working players on the tour and she always picks her up. She may come back really strong in January.

I am loving Istanbul YEC so far :cheer: :clap2:

Sharapova probably shouldn't have showed up but when there's a big pay cheque involved you can always count on her to make an appearance

Whats with your constant maria attacks, she played cos she wanted to she has enough money already :weirdo:

exactly ... Na does not mind playing other BBB ... she just cannot play Romanian / Czech players with no pace and Stosur :tape:

Well, she got a set of Sammy in Toronto and was very competitive. Given how emotionally crushed Sam looked after her last match...I guess we'll have to wait and see :help:

I don't think the "super" part of the thread title is terribly accurate right now. More like...Scraping-by-barely-holding-it-together-against-a-player-in-worse-form Na."

Just sayin'.

^she played nothing/two matches after NH. ok, she lost 2 in 2, but she hasnt played 4 5 6 tournos, in her "defence" :oh:
anyway, she wasnt "super" yesterday but I saw something too much better than her last matches, so I'm happy with that. she came back from 4-2 and 4-0 in the tb, it's typical of her. she only needs to avoid those "little" lacks of concentration, I remember her playing well vs sam in cincy, when she won the 2nd set and was leading 2-1 in the 3rd. then she lost the plot for 5 minutes, but those 5 minutes costed her the match, 'cause she was playing better than sam but doing that she gave her the confidence she needed to come back and win the match.

Boring match. Martha's FH is such a huge liability - nearly every time Na Li forced Martha to move into it = homerun.
