Lack of sponsor postpones Hong Kong tennis event(AFP) 1 day ago
HONG KONG The annual Hong Kong Tennis Classic which has featured top stars such as Roger Federer and John McEnroe has been postponed due to a lack of sponsorship, organisers said Tuesday.

They said they had no other option but to cancel the exhibition event, which was due to take place in January 2012, after it failed to secure a title sponsor.

"We have been forced to postpone the event in January owing to a lack of sponsorship," Ian Wade, the Hong Kong Tennis Patrons' Association president said in a statement.

"In today's financial environment, finding a sponsor has been difficult, and this has proved to be the case," he added.

Co-tournament director Terry Catton said: "I hope this is a temporary glitch and that a sponsor will step forward to assume the reins."

The 35-year-old tournament has brought big names such as McEnroe, Federer, Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki to the Chinese city of seven million, where tennis is one of the most popular sports.

According to another newspaper I read today, the organizer wanted HK$8-10 million (~US$1.1mil) sponsorship as the event costs HK$20million to hold (>HK$10million is appearance fee). Now they hope to postpone the event to September/October during the Asian swing, but it may eventually got cancelled if there's still no sponsorship. :tape:

Same feeling here. Nothing against this exhibition event anymore than any other exhibition events but frankly I have absolutely no interest at all in these sort of events where you get big star players who are all given a lot of money to turn up but have no real motivation to win. These events always produce absolutely meaningless results and I always find it puzzling that anyone takes those results remotely seriously.
