View Full Version : 30 languages in 300 days

So we have this languages thread. Where all post how many languages they can speak. Lets go bit further :) For a starter, I made these numbers up, though have read similar estimations somewhere.

Grammar aside. To understand any language one needs to know only 500 or so basic words. To speak a language one needs to know 2000 words. Local words are what makes the diffirence. For example word "let". If used in private conversation, in the middle of nowhere, I would probably automaticly wonder what match is s/he thinking of!

Idea is not to learn 30 languages. Only most basic words of 30 languages.

If this sounds interesting project. Add word and language to the list of 8 words and languages I start with (English is obviously base language in this). Project will not start before 30 words and 30 languages.

Well it's pretty clear to me that something I don't understand will start once we have 30 languages and 30 words in the list.

Well it's pretty clear to me that something I don't understand will start once we have 30 languages and 30 words in the list.

I guess I read it the same way as you then...:)

Do you mean we have to add a language and a basic word to the list that you have?

Yes. Add one language and one basic word to list. When we reach 30 we figure out what those words are.

33 already?

Apparently words like "Yes" "No" "You" are not basic
Then again, when we are this limited (30 words), there is no real need for those :D

Im starting to agree with delicatecutter. This indeed is a mess. Do first think second isnt best way. Lol.

What we have here is 30(+3) languages and 30(+3) words. My idea, at some point, was to learn three(3) words a day. Thus learning 30x30 most basic words in 300 days. Not backfired yet, but I do think words like cake, tennis and condom are not most basic words. Replace those with Yes/No/You

Any natural speaker of any of mensioned languages. Please post words in your language :wavey:

2/33 already arrived :bounce:

If someone has spare time to do nice table for these. Please do.
2x33 would keep us busy for weeks. But as there are plenty of same words (german-dutch), no need to rush.

Ill be back during weekend.

English - Afrikaans. Afrikaans is quite complicated in the pronunciation. W's and V's sound like a mixture of an English V and F, and G's tend to be very gutteral sounds unless they're in the middle of a word (eg. Engels) where they're more like the G's at the end of 'long', 'thing' and 'sing' (in otherwords, they're not emphasised at all). I learnt most of my Afrikaans from my parents and wasn't taught formally in school, so I apologise in advance if anything is not 100% accurate.

Yes - Ja (Ya)
No - Nee (Kind of like nee-ya)
We - Ons
I - ek
You - Jy (yay)
They - Hulle

Know - weet (roughly 'fee-ert')
House/Hotel - Huis (hayss)/Hotel
What - wat (roughly 'fat')
And - en
Love - liefde (leaf-de)
Airport - lughawe (lugh-haafe)

Beauty - skone (skuh-ne)
Thank you - dankie (inf.)/baie dankie (buya dankie). The latter is formal and sort of sounds like 'buy a donkey'
Why - waarom (faa-rom)
Car - kar
Brave - moedige (moh-digh-a)
Food - kos

Crazy - bedol
Dirty - vuil (fail pretty much)
Sky - hemel (hee-mehl)
Handsome - mooi (moyy)
Funny - amusant
Ocean - Oseaan (os-ee-ahn)

Water - water (fa-ter)
Help - assistent
Heart - hart
Earth - die Aarde (dee ard)/aarde (ard). The latter means 'soil'.
Hospital - hospitaal (hos-pi-tahl)
Chicken - hoender (hoon-der)

It helps if you have some German or Dutch knowledge when it comes to Afrikaans, as the three are relatively similar in pronunciation (especially Dutch). Again, apologies if some are inaccurate or informal, but that's what I've learnt.
