Zachary Quinto comes out: I'm 'a gay man'

Zachary Quinto, who was Dr. Spock in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek film and was launched to fame in Heroes, has played a series of gay roles, including on Tori Spelling's TV show So NoTORIous, and on the new FX series American Horror Story, and he has been outspoken about gay-rights issues.

But when asked to comment on speculation about his sexuality as recently as last year, he declined, saying he preferred "not to feed the rumor mill with either substantiation or dismissal."

That has changed, reports New York magazine. In an interview, Quinto, 34, has come out, referring to himself twice "as a gay man."

The first time he was talking about performing in Broadway play Angels in America, "... as a gay man, it made me feel like there's still so much work to be done, and there's still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed."

And the second was when he was asked about gay marriage and gay bullying. "And again, as a gay man I look at that and say there's a hopelessness that surrounds it, but as a human being I look at it and say 'Why? Where's this disparity coming from, and why can't we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?' We're terrified of facing ourselves."

Quinto blogged about it on Sunday, saying "living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it - is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality."

Interesting. Sylar was the reason I stopped watching Heroes. Too twisted for my taste.

Not quite on the same level of "DUH, what took you so long" like Ricky Martin, but almost everyone already knew.

I never heard of this guy, but I'm glad he had made a decision he is comfortable with and I hope he has the right to marry if and when he and a partner make THAT decision.

Also I definitely would date him. He's kind of got that "TV ugly/weird" thing going on but in real life he'd probably be pretty sexy.

Star Trek and Heroes actor Zachary Quinto has come out as gay, saying that the sadness he felt on hearing about the death of New Yorker Jamey Rodemeyer was the catalyst for him to publicly out himself.

The actor yesterday posted on his blog, saying that the recent death of bulyied gay teenager had troubled him greatly.

“In light of Jamey’s death it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality,” he reasoned.

“Our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country. Gay kids need to stop killing themselves because they are made to feel worthless by cruel and relentless bullying. Parents need to teach their children principles of respect and acceptance.

“While his death only makes me wish that I had done this sooner, I am eternally grateful to him for being the catalyst for change within me. Now I can only hope to serve as the same catalyst for even one other person in this world. That – I believe – is all that we can ask of ourselves and of each other.”

While chatting about his new movie Margin Call, in which he plays a villain involved in the recent Global Financial Crisis, the handsome 34-year-old also outed himself to New York Magazine, saying that he recently loved taking to the stage for award-winning AIDS-in-the-1980’s play Angels in America, finding the production’s subject matter “enormously rewarding and terrifying.”

Doing that play made me realize how fortunate I am to have been born when I was born,” he reflected. “And to not have to witness the decimation of an entire generation of amazingly talented and otherwise vital men. And at the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like I… there’s still so much work to be done.

“There’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed. The undercurrent of that fear and that, you know, insidiousness still is swarming. It’s still all around us. To revisit that world at all, it took a toll on me. It definitely was an incredible experience but it was really daunting at times.”

Quinto, who portrayed Spock in the latest Star Trek movie and is set to do it again next year, had never previously spoken publicly about his sexuality but had supported LGBTI charities and had even filmed his own It Gets Better video, shown below…

 I have heard of Spock, but had no idea who the actor was and had never seen him either as I don't like Science Fiction! Can't stand it!

I am the only person I know who has never seen a Star Wars film and ET, in fact the only SF film I have watched is one with Harrison Ford where people were robots and had to switch channels less than half way through! I just don't like any films set in the future!

That's what I thought when I first saw him. I thought only Chris Pine was hot in the Star Trek remake and thought Zach was kinda ugly, but then he grew on me and now I think he's attractive.

I think it's because now that we know and realize that would could realistically have a shot we like him  if he were straight we' think he was ugly cause we'd never have a shot.

He must have him confused with Will.

I'm surprised they don't give an Emmy to the fat guy on Modern Family. I have never seen a straight guy play a gay so convincingly.

You're taking it too literal. I mean any gay man has more of a shot at him now since he is gay himself.
