Anybody else watching this? Completely horrific, I hope Wheldon is alive, but bad vibes....

Open wheel cars aren't meant to race like this, way too dangerous. So many injuries happen at these 1.5 mile tracks. Just stupid.

 RIP Dan. It's all over the sports news channels in the UK.
At least he died doing what he loved. Condolences to his family at this sad time.

Oh my god.... I'm gutted... the crash looked extremely bad to begin with and when I saw the remains of his car I knew it was really serious.

Sometimes motorsport can be extremely brutal. Dan won his first race this year, clinching his second Indy 500 win in a spectacular fashion. And just his second this season turned out to be his last, a career ended at just 33 years of age.

I've met him at the 2006 Rolex 24 at Daytona for a quick chat, nice bloke..he went on to win that race as well. I don't know what to say....

The whole idea of having so many quick open wheelers race on this track was insane to begin with, I hope the Indycar officials finally learn their lesson. There have been so many bad accidents in recent years and today luck just ran out...

The 5-lap salute was a great way to end the event though, it was gut-wrenching to see Dario Franchitti & Tony Kanaan in tears while getting back into their cars. Rest in peace Dan!

As I posted nearly 5 years ago about these other 3 dead daredevils (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=276102), its an "occupational hazard" of doing what they loved. (Add stunt pilots and circus "big cat" tamers who sometimes get killed pursing their passion to the list).

Doing a hazardous job that has another purpose (military, police, firefighter, miner, etc) is one thing, albeit the controversy those jobs sometimes engender. Doing a "job" that's basically about conquering risks is another.

How ironic that they were showing the POV from his car and cut away right at the time of the crash... Sickening. RIP.

And they were talking about how worried this man was about having to race with so many cars and the air thing..

Two-time Indy500 winner, and 2005 IndyCar Series Champion.

He was a great racing driver and a good family person. I was fortunate enough to watch Dan taking the checkered flag at 2005 Indy500. One of my favorite IndyCar drivers, actually I'm quite shocked to believe that he passed away :tape:

God Bless His Soul.
