Race to Istanbul update

Pamela Bowden, Ruflina Taliamanosoko, Zianzhi Ziyi, Nthamangela Mbangu-Žerić, Ella Felivitch, Jennifer Casanova, Harper Johnson and Jookkarae Mensarb were already qualified.

Chantal Chan took the 9th spot.
Everyone down to #20 (Sabine Graf) can still qualify, so the combinations are rather nightmarish to work out.

Giusa fought hard but could not prevent a marquee match-up between Siri and Nadia; Cristina seemed to have shrugged off the Osaka tournament and is well set for a run here.

Also, Vittoria beat Ruffy here last year in second round as well :oh:

Russian Qualifier Anna Rurikovich stuns No. 8 seed du Preez

She may be only 14 and only playing in the second pro event of her career but that didn't stop Anna Rurikovich from pulling off a stunning upset against the No. 8 seed Cornelia du Preez.

The Russian teen won the match 7-6 3-6 7-6 serving a warning to the tour of her talent and at the same time delighting the home crowd.

"This is a dream come true," she said after winning her match on centre court. She is now the only Russian player left in the singles draw after current Russian No. 1 Anastasia Nemayava bowed out to the No. 3 seed Ella Felivitch.

"I feel like I have pressure already, which is amazing because I like pressure I feel I can handle it but it all seems surreal," said Rurikovich who only started on the junior tour a few months ago.

"I just hope I am able to play fearless tennis. I feel if I can do that anything's possible." Although, Rurikovich left Russia with her family to train in Spain a tennis player and still maintains a good command of the language.

"I like speaking Russian whenever I get a chance. It's really great playing here in Moscow," she said.

She will now take on Rita Cebolla in the second round.

Singles Results, Second Round

[Q]Stefania Di Francesca-Beck def. Vittoria Perez 3/6, 7/5, 6/4
[Q]Anna Rurikovich def. Rita Cebolla 6/4, 0/6, 7/5
Vittoria's form rapidly crashed to earth, as we get a qualifier-match instead of an intra-Spanish effort. Vittoria needs to hope that Fleri or a top-half player wins this tournament.

[3]Ella Felivitch def. Regla Torres 2/6, 6/0, 7/6(9)
Chantal Chan def. [5]Jennifer Casanova 3/6, 7/5, 6/4
Ella came back in a match where neither player showed their top level, while Jennifer's tournament ended abruptly against a Chantal with few nerves.

[WC]Kathleen Pryde-Degman def. [Q]Ariel Aries 0/6, 6/2, 6/4
Sabine Graf def. [4]Harper Johnson 7/5, 6/2
Kathleen and Sabine are long shots to qualify for Istanbul, both needing to win this tournament to make the grade.

[7]Siri Cornetsson def. [WC]Nadia Banaszek 7/6(0), 1/6, 6/2
Fleri Hingisafrilia def. Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu 7/6(5), 7/6(6)
Siri has found some form again and was stellar in the third set; meanwhile Fri prevails in two tight tie-breaks.

Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman def. Nemayeva/Pérez 1/6, 6/4, 6/3
This is what happens when someone takes a week off.

Benedetti/Raymond def. Mésane/Felivitch 7/5, 7/6(4)
[4]Graf/Huubere def. Torres/Di Francesca-Beck 7/5, 5/7, 7/6(4)

Elise and Ella hit the town, otherwise no surprises.

Rurikovich continues dream run

The Russian qualifier continued her amazing run into the quarterfinals of the Moscow even with a 6-4 0-6 7-5 win over Rita Cebolla.

Again playing on centre court, the teenager had strong support from the home crowd.

Despite losing a one-sided second set, Rurikovich wasn't rattled and stayed mentally focused for the final set where she didn't drop her serve and broke in the final game of the set to win the match.

She now plays another qualifier Di Francesco-Beck where she will be considered a favourite by the Russian crowd.

"It's a position I would never have thought possible at the beginning of the week. I just wanted to qualify," she said.

Singles Results, Quarterfinals

[Q]Stefania Di Francesca-Beck def. [Q]Anna Rurikovich 5/7, 6/3, 7/5
Stefania was slightly rattled, but found her game in time to make her first real break-through at tour level. The multi-lingual Anna will surely be back on the senior tour soon.

Chantal Chan def. Ella Felivitch 6/4, 1/6, 7/5
In this battle of the form players - #3 vs. #1 on the rankings since the US Open Series began - Chantal showed excellent maturity and will be one of the low-odds favourites for the Istanbul tournament. It was a sweet revenge for a US Open semi-final loss, too.

Sabine Graf def. [WC]Kathleen Pryde-Degman 6/0, 7/6(8)
Sabine eked out a close win and will probably be pleased with the way her singles game is going; with 16 years of tour experience between them, the top-class second set had the crowd beyond the edge of their seats and falling down into the centre of the arena. This was Sabine's third straight win over Kathleen.

[7]Siri Cornetsson def. Fleri Hingisafrilia 6/2, 1/6, 7/6(1)
Siri has one last hack at defending her finalist status from the tour championship; with this win she is 14th in the intermediate standings. This was the 13th match between these two in the last four seasons.

Oct 21st, 2011, 11:01 PM
Doubles Results, Quarterfinals

Anastadis/du Preez def. Chan/Vladimirescu 6/2, 6/4
After a long time away from each other, Alexandra and Cornelia found that Cincinnati groove again. It was a day where Istanbul hopes were ruined.

[3]Wong/Zianzhi def. Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman 6/2, 1/6, 7/6(3)
Jane has taken charge of the doubles circuit this autumn, sending Fleri and Kath on holiday.

[4]Graf/Huubere def. Benedetti/Raymond 6/3, 0/6, 6/3
Giusa and Lindsay also failed to back up their first round effort, despite bagelling their opponent. Sabine is having an outstanding week, and the pair haven't lost a first round clash since San Diego.

[2]Cornetsson/Johnson def. Aries/Banaszek 4/6, 7/6(2), 7/5
Siri is another player who couples doubles and singles form well, and after many weeks of being outshone by Jennifer/Ruffy, the blondes are back.

Oct 21st, 2011, 11:13 PM
 Glad this stupid year is over now.

Siri fights back in Moscow

After three weeks of disappointing results Siri Cornetsson moves herself in the spotlight again with good victories over several former top 10 players, 7:5 4:6 7:5 against Guiseppina Benedetti, 7:6(0) 1:6 6:2 over Nadia Banaszek and 6:2 1:6 7:6(1) against Fleri Hingisafrilia. In the semifinal there will be an interesting clash between two experienced hard court players with three times US Open semifinalist Cornetsson and two times Australian Open finalist Graf.

"These wins over quality players are good for the self confidence. In the past weeks I've often struggled with my serve and committed way too many unforced errors. This week I have a positive winner / unforced error ratio and only served like 3 double faults per match. It is a good test for Bali where I want to finish my season on a high note."

Siri's season 2011 has been marked by alot of up and downs. Consistency hasn't been an item apart from a few weeks post Wimbledon. In Bastad she won her only singles title after a series of 4 first round losses and similarly in Moscow she has still options to the title ending a three first round loss streak.

"I have matured during the years and actually manage tough loss series better. During 2009 I was really struggling with my self confidence, regretting the missed opportunities and so on. It was a new experience for me back then. Now I have a more professional attitude. Sometimes it does good too to let out your frustration rather than swallow it. I still need to get mentally tougher and will work with my coach on it during off season."

In doubles Siri and Harper managed to string together two wins something which hasn't happened since months. Are they finding form again for the right moment to shine in Istanbul?

"We haven't really exhausted ourselves during the past weeks. We lack a bit of match practice which we are getting now in Moscow. I also prefer the Round Robin system to the usual elimination draw. A final between the two best FWTT doubles teams isn't out of question even if we all know the outcome of that match already ... in a final."

VSFan1 aka Joshua L.

Singles Results, Semifinals

Chantal Chan def. [Q]Stefania Di Francesca-Beck 7/6(0), 5/7, 7/5
Chantal is hot going into Istanbul; she can advance to the third seeding level if she takes her third title this season.

Sabine Graf def. [7]Siri Cornetsson 7/5, 6/4
Sabine is also in the running for her third title this year, as well as Istanbul participation. She was not broken once in this dominating performance.

Oct 22nd, 2011, 09:36 PM
Doubes Results, Semifinals

Anastadis/du Preez def. [3]Wong/Zianzhi 7/6(5), 6/2
After losing the first set on a dubious umpire's decision, Jane and Ziyi were unable to fight back against the energetic teens, who high-fived after every point and looked in great spirits.

[4]Graf/Huubere def. [2]Cornetsson/Johnson 7/6(3), 6/7(2), 7/6(3)
Sabine beats down Siri again; this time a doubles battle of serves, though neither tie-break had the high drama of the singles semifinal.

Double-Whopper-Title in Russia
Germany's number one Sabine Graf won singles and doubles in the famous FWTT tournament in Moscow. Graf, who played an unbelievable week showed a fantastic performance in her singles final against young Chan. At the first set the German took the first break in the opening game and broke her oppenent another time to win it 6-3. In the second set Graf played some great shots moved to net every time and had only 4 unforced errors (2 double faults). After the first matchpoint Sabine ran to her doubles partner and best friend Marteena Huubere, who watched the whole match. "Thanks Teena for being here and give my so much support!" It was Graf's third title this year and after 2008 the second in Moscow. Later this afternoon the German/Australian doubles team won another title here in Russia. "I am so happy. I just travel to Moscow to play some doubles for the Masters in Istanbul. And now I got the last ticket for the singles tournament, too. Two titles in one week this is a double-whopper!"
