Nthama's newest blog entry, partly about Linz, her favorite tournament:

"Hey guys... I'm back with another blog entry. You all sure know I got married and I am pregnant for the third time in my life. I am so happy right now, I could hug the whole world. Unfortunately, my tennis is going as great as it could. That's why I am thinking of having a break from tennis after the Olympics 2012. Imagine me and Ruffy retiring at the same date, wouldn't that be awesome? :hearts: At the same time, Xhaka is doing so incredibly great on the junior tour and I feel like I am kinda stealing her place. I think it's time for a new generation to take over, which neither of us old mummies (I think Ruffy and I are the only ones who have children) should be around for much longer. Anyway, I cannot wait for the YEC to come... I hope I can qualify for the first time, that would be awesome and a first and last time at once. Next stop for me is Linz, where I am the second seed. I will be facing a qualifier in round one, it might be Luna. Happy to come back to my home tournament, my favorite one by far. Leaving Beijing today."

En route to the Mickey Mouse championships

Siri Cornetsson appeared in a traditional dirndl in Linz.

Siri Cornetsson has missed to qualify for the Championships in Istanbul but has already booked her singles spot in Bali, the Championships for International winners. Even though her season has been far away from brilliant Siri knows how to play well in these International tournaments as show a Bastad title, a Strasbourg final, semifinals in Palermo, Quebec, Guangzhou and Auckland.

We met Siri for an interview in Linz.

Q: You have lost both opening matches in Tokyo and Beijing. Were you under pressure to qualify for the Championships where you have a final to defend?
Siri: It's not been the season of the big events for me. If you fail to reach the quarterfinal of any grand slam you don't have to wonder of not qualifying for the Championships. I've lost the run to that final tournament months ago. It's a shame really as I usually played very well at the Year-End Championships.

Q: You have qualified for Bali though with a nice home title in Bastad.

Siri: It was a great feeling to win at home. I have played well at most of the International tournaments and I hope to do so in Linz too. Maybe the place for the Mikey Mouse queen of 2011 is still free, so full focus on Linz and Bali.

Q: What is happening to Harper and you in doubles?
Siri: The four lost finals in a row got in our head. It's not an easy situation for us. After the early exit at the US Open and the win of Taliamanosoko/Casanova our chances for the doubles number 1 were gone. That's tennis, one bad tournament and your aims and dreams are destroyed. Then it's very tough to find motivation again. At least we still have the Championships to redeem ourselves.

Q: What about your aims in 2012? You are going into your sixth season already...
Siri: I guess you hint the retirement announcement of Nthamangela Mbangu after the Olympic Games and want to know if I want to give free place to a younger player too? But no, it isn't going to happen anytime soon. I love playing this game and still have major aims on FWTT, even after 5 long years on tour. In 2012 I want to complete my doubles Grand Slam with Harper by winning in Wimbledon and of course finally collect my first singles Grand Slam trophy. My brother Göran has confirmed to play Hopman Cup with me next season, that will be fun.

Q: Good luck for your remaining events Siri.

Nthamangela Mbangu Zeric's Monday Blog

Hey guys, it's me. First official blogger of FWTT... makes me kind of proud, although I was the one who had the idea of starting it up.
I arrived here in Linz on Friday and I was given the honour of assisting in the draw ceremony, picking the seeded players, while Austrian junior twins Nicole and Astrid Haas picked the rest of players.
I really feel at home here and so welcome. Currently, this is by quite far my favorite tournament in the world.
I will be having my third appearance here at the Generali Ladies Open, losing round one to Mésane two years ago and losing in the quarters to Hernich last year.
This year I am seeded as number two and I will be facing a qualifier in round one, that is never easy because you don't know what to expect or even whom.
Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to playing my opening round.
In addition, I am also playing doubles despite the fact that Pammy is in Osaka. I am teaming up with Yanet, my first friend AND first doubles partner on the tour. We haven't played together since Budapest 2009. Maybe you remember our incredible run to the Wimbledon quarters that year, that was absolutely amazing.

Tonight, my husband Ammar is finally going to arrive accompanied by my two daughters Zoé and Irina. I cannot wait to finally see them again, I missed them so much over in Asia but I didn't want them to fly such a long time. They are scheduled to arrive at 9.16 PM. Can't wait!

Of course I am happy to answer your questions if you send any to me...
Good night, I'll write again tomorrow.
XO Nthama

Singles Results, First Round

[1]Ziyi Zianzhi def. [Q]Alexandra Anastadis 7/6(4), 7/6(4)
Ziyi faced a strong challenger today and was able to edge out Alexandra it two tiebreakers.

Giuseppina Benedetti def. [5]Jookkarae Mensarb 3/6, 6/3, 7/6(3)
Giusa gets a decent win over the new top tenner Jook.

Samantha Soren def. [6]Sylvie Bailly 7/5, 3/6, 6/4
Samantha's been struggling since her summer run, but she got her mojo back with this win over Sylvie.

[3]Harper Johnson def. [Q]Regla Torres 7/6(4), 7/6(5)
Regla did a good job of qualifying but couldn't edge past Harper, who was just too good today.

[Q]Ariel Aries def. [4]Siri Cornetsson 0/6, 6/0, 7/6(2)
The first two sets were lopsided but the third set saw the qualifer Ariel intensely beat the seeded Siri.

[8]Sabine Graf def. Clair McKrain 6/3, 1/6, 6/4
Sabine has been so consistent in the second half of the year, she is sure to be back in the top 10 if she keeps it up.

Marteena Huubere def. [7]Vittoria Perez 7/6(2), 7/6(6)
Marteena barely edges out Vittoria in the second set tiebreaker to move on to the quarterfinals.

[2]Nthamangela Mbangu def. [Q]Yanet Mori-Tu 4/6, 7/5, 7/6(3)
Nthama had to fight for this match, but was able to defeat her good friend Yanet to move on.

Wheew! I didn't know how the match against Regla would go. Harper needs all the wins she can get because, even though she reached the final of the French and has won three titles and reach two other finals this year, she's not guaranteed a place in the YEC! It's a very competitive year!

And hopefully Siri and Harper can pull out of their mini-slump and get back to winning again. We've got nothing to defend at the end of the year. So, we could make up some ground on Ruffy & Jen! :)

Nthamangela Mbangu Zeric's Wednesday Blog

Hey guys, it's me again. I am sorry I could not blog yesterday but my family arrived on Monday and I just felt like I needed to catch up with so much about them. I missed my girls, I don't think I'll ever leave them alone at home again. I was just a lil afraid because of the Atomar danger in Japan. They are all doing fine.

Today I had my first match of the tournament, I faced Yanet Mori-Tu in the opener and despite a bad start I managed to defeat my good friend and doubles partner in a third set tie-break. I was relieved especially because it was the first time ever that Irina was present at one of my matches. I had to look over to her in between every point, I love her so much. My kids mean way more to me than tennis. One more reason not to go Istanbul. After my match which was the second one in the afternoon, I went to the showers. Then I went on a long walk with the girls and Ammar before meeting with Yanet and Luna for dinner at an awesome Chinese restaurant I really enjoy going to. I go there at least three times a week everytime I am in Linz.
After dinner, I went to bring my girls to bed and then headed back to practise court to work on singles with Ziyi first and then some doubles practise with Yanet, Siri and Harper. I really enjoyed the doubles practise with Siri and Harper, their doubles abilities are out of the world, every volley they hit reaches the place it should. We also had a practise match against them until 9 PM but we lost it 0-6, 5-7. We didn't manage to make a single break. They are too solid and really very used to teaming up but in the second set our service started to work off better so we could steal a few games but in the end they were just too strong. It was all so much fun.
After that we went back to our hotel, Yanet and me. We always live room to room when we are at the same tournaments since she's back. We let the evening find it's ending in a good glass of red wine in our suite. We have one with extra room for the kids but we can still hear them, Ammar and me. We enjoyed ourselves playing cards and of course, Yanet and Ammar won against me and Yanet's coach but it was still very much fun. I am really looking forward to playing tomorrow, the crowd was awesome today. I will be playing Marteena Huubere, I think she is solid and strong... I don't think I can win, I spent too little time on the practise court the last few weeks, doing promotion for the junior tour, having two kids and being a pro, is a 300%-job.
I'll try to catch up with you guys tomorrow again.
Nthama

Questions

Which is your favorite tournament of the year?
Easy for me. Linz, where I am currently at. I live at the border to Austria in Switzerland, so many of my friends come to watch and I feel like home here. The crowd is amazing.

What is your shoe size?
I don't know about American or English shoe sizes, in Swiss counting, it's 43 which is rather large for a woman. It's actually pretty hard finding high-heel shoes.

Who is your favorite actress?
I admire Miranda Hart, she is way too funny. But I also like Natalie Portman and Penelope Cruz. My favorite actress used to be Stephanie Glaser who died last year (R.I.P.)

Singles Semifinals

Samantha Soren def. Giuseppina Benedetti 7/5, 1/6, 6/3
Sam chose not to defend her title in Osaka, and it looks likely to be a wise choice, even though the Bali place is all but guaranteed. Ziyi-killer Giusa can't back that up.

Marteena Huubere def. Sabine Graf 7/6(6), 6/1
Marteena has had a torrid autumn but finally strings more than a couple of wins together, though didn't look entirely pleased with defeating her doubles partner. It puts her in a good position to qualify for Bali, though.

Doubles Semifinals

[4]Nemayeva/Perez def. [1]Cornetsson/Johnson 2/6, 7/6(5), 6/3
Siri and Harper lost in the first round of USO and haven't really found their mojo since. Here they had many match points but Nastya and Vittoria was still too good.

Pirilenko/Soren def. [2]Graf/Huubere 6/3, 1/6, 7/6(3)
Great day for Samantha - even with playing six sets - not so good for Sabine. Very good day for the crowd, though, who got a cracker of a match.
