In term of tourist attractions and things to do:

1. Istanbul.
2. Tokyo.
3. Osaka.
4. Seoul.
5. Kuala Lumpur

For food and cost of living, KL by a mile. Osaka and Tokyo are too expensive. A big plus of Osaka is that it's a train ride away from Kyoto (and Kobe).

If you are worried about radiation, don't go to Japan.:oh:

I can understand why people would still want to avoid Tokyo, but really, there's no difference with being in Osaka or Seoul, unless you're really paranoid.

Have to be loyal to my new home town and say Osaka.

Its greatest virtue is actually the area in which it sits...the likes of Kyoto Kobe and Nara are all only a local train ride away.

I love Tokyo, but feel perhaps Osaka has more character somehow.

If one is going to visit, but doesn't intend to leave the City, then chose Tokyo. If one wants a richer, wider experience then Osaka makes a great base to explore Kansai.

My favorite city to visit so far in Japan has actually been Kobe. It has an atmosphere I can quite put my finger on, familiar, friendly. I always enjoy a daytrip there.

What I don't like about Osaka is downtown - Umeda - and north up to Shin-Osaka, it just seems like a confusing mess of construction going on since forever, rail tracks and department stores to me.

I can't understand how you could compare 3 far east cities to an almost european city and a south-east one  they are just too different to be compared
it's like comparing Vienna to Dubai

But I think the views from Umeda Sky Building are extraordinary.

Umeda station though is a labyrinth and unbearably hot and crowded in summer. Those terrible hot summers are a real negative for Osaka. But the new Station City complex is very impressive, the transport system great, the surrounding area fabulous.
