(1) Wozniacki vs Hradecka
Medina Garrigues vs Gajdosova

Kanepi vs Zheng Saisai
Begu vs Lisicki

Kanepi beat Wozniacki in Tokyo and could be a tough 2nd round.

Wonder if Sabine will have it as easy vs. Begu as she did in Grapevine?

Good quarter. Wozzo is always tricky but if Sabine gets back to pre USO form somehow, she can take it. Of course not having played competitively for a month, I expect her to be very rusty.

Good draw for Sabine! :)
Begu should be beatable, Kanepi in 2nd round could be tricky but is also beatable if Sabine plays close to her normal level, match against Wozniacki would be interesting :lick:

Good start in the tournament anyway for Sabine.
Kanepi definitely is no easy opponent in the next round with her run at the moment.
Imo, she is even more dangerous than Wozniacki

Kaia will be a tough nut to crack. Bine needs to be on her game the whole time.

well, she didn´t play since NY, so it is normal that she isn´t in great shape now but she definitely has to improve against Kanepi!
Same old problems today anyway, 40% 1st serves in, 6 DFs in one set and only won 39% on her 2nd serve before Begu has to retire, she can´t be satisfied with such stats obviously!

Against Kanepi she has to serve well and be aggressive herself, especially on 2nd serve of Kanepi, Kanepi herself will try to attack 2nd serve from Sabine as well, could be an interesting match!

Hope that's just rustiness from not playing competitively since NYC. But it seems to be an ongoing theme. She just HAS to improve her 1st serve %age especially. It worries me that she doesn't seem able to rectify this issue yet.

She had a month to work on it. Clearly didn't do squat and is just relying on her talent to scrape through the coming tourneys. :o

She had an average 1st serve % of 53.6% in her pre USO HC tourneys and 56% in her first two USO matches. So it's nothing to be worried about right now. ;) She can only improve that in the medium term anyways.

Maybe infection, maybe food poisoning. Either way it SUCKS!!

Me too. It's so unsafe with the food there. Always has been. And this is mandatory, so they force them to be there, risking their health or their careers! I just hope none of the players walks away from this tourney having eaten food containing gluten. Everybody would know where it came from and they'd still get banned. I don't even wanna think about it when it's players I don't like, not to mention Sabine! :o

Sabine needs these tight, difficult matches with top-ranked players in later stages of (big) tournaments now. She had an bunch of easy straight-set wins the past months, which gave her a remarkable basic consistency and stability of her game. But she has to gain a competitive toughness yet, to deal with bad situations during matches, successfully change game tactics, make the deciding points, winning ugly at the end. And of course to get rid of some tightness she has on big stages.

I cannot believe that Sabine would have deliberately eaten something not knowing what was in it, especially knowing how serious her gluten intolerence is. I can only think that her team would have told the Chinese authorities running the Open that she was gluten intolerent, & what she could & couldn't take. That leaves the Chinese caterers...
