Thought I'd start a thread about this show :p There's often threads about show and I think this one deserve one.

I actually quite like TN, it was a first episod so clearly they needed to set things out a bit. It looks like a mix of Jurassic Park/Avatar/Lost lol. (Maybe it looks like Avatar because of the sergeant and the overall camp look lol) Could be too much but so far I like it, I think it's stupid to try to compare it to another series or movie tho, that's when you get high expectation and get disapointed. Obviously they can't make it too similar or else people will complain they copied it. I'm curious to see what's going to be the story line, obviously there's something going on with the 6ers (whatever they are called) and the guy's son disparition with the signs. Something fishy about the "real" purpose of TN lol. Bottom line I think that show will be a grower a bit like Lost, I remember when I first started watching Lost and it first couple of episods, I liked it but it wasn't as intriguing and later on on the serie, and I would never have guessed, even after the 1st season that it would last that long and end up like that. I think something similar might happen with TerraNova,

I just finished watching it. I liked it, but I'm not sure it has the potential to have the fan-base or success of LOST.

It will be interesting to see how it develops.

Like I said in that other thread, just saw the pilot of Terra Nova and yes I agree it's a mix of Avatar/Lost/Jurrasic Park  I love Avatar and Lost so I'm definitely gonna give this show a try.

The dinosaurs may have roamed in prime time, but Ashton Kutcher's roar was louder.

Fox's dino-epic "Terra Nova" got off to a decent if unspectacular start Monday night, proving no match for CBS' "Two and a Half Men," which remained strong in Week 2 with new costar Kutcher.

The heavily publicized two-hour premiere of "Terra Nova," the long-anticipated time-travel drama from executive producer Steven Spielberg and already one of the most expensive series in TV history, averaged 9.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

In the Monday time slot, that was much better than last year's critically acclaimed bomb "Lone Star" (4 million) but a bit down from the premiere of last season's "House."

In the advertiser-coveted 18-to-49-year-old demographic, Fox averaged a solid if not thrilling 3.1 rating/8 share, good for third place overall on the night. That number had to be somewhat disappointing to Fox executives, given that the "Terra Nova" pilot was estimated to cost at least $15 million, one of the costliest in TV history.

By comparison, last week's "Hell's Kitchen" finale averaged a 2.6 rating — and reality shows are much cheaper to produce than scripted dramas such as "Terra Nova."

But Fox executives adopted a philosophical tone toward the results.

"It's a science-fiction show; that always narrows the audience a little bit," Preston Beckman, the network's scheduling guru, said of "Terra Nova. "It's really about where it is Week 2 and 3. What you hope is that people who liked it tell their friends.... We continue to hope families will catch onto it."

If "Terra Nova" underperformed relative to its hype, "Two and a Half Men" continued to surprise.

The sitcom delivered 20.5 million viewers — nowhere near last week's record-breaking 28.7 million premiere, but still far and away the evening's most-watched program. Ratings for ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," meanwhile, were unexpectedly soft, with 16.2 million tuning in. NBC continued to suffer with its lineup of "The Sing-Off" and "The Playboy Club," the latter of which failed to draw even 4 million viewers.

Analysts expect "Men" to settle around the 12.7 million viewer mark it averaged last season, the final, shortened one for the since-fired Charlie Sheen. But at the rate things are going, it may take a while to get there, much to the dismay of Fox and other rivals.

It seems like there are alot of Aussie actors in the serie so I'm guessing it was filmed there :p

Wiki:
The series is based on an idea by British writer Kelly Marcel. Alex Graves signed on to direct the pilot. Brannon Braga serves as showrunner. Australia was chosen after producer Steven Spielberg vetoed Hawaii because he wanted a different filming location from his 1993 film Jurassic Park. The two-hour pilot was filmed over 26 days in late November to December 2010. It was shot in south-east Queensland, Australia, with locations in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Gold Coast Hinterland. The shoot was plagued by torrential rain and additional material had to be shot in 2011, with a total estimated cost between $10 to $20 million to be amortized over the season. More than 250 sets were constructed. An episode takes eight to nine days to shoot, like most television dramas, but six weeks in post-production, twice the television average. The average episode budget is about $4 million. Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly stated, "This thing is going to be huge. It's going to take an enormous production commitment."
In an unusual decision, Fox skipped ordering just a pilot, and instead immediately ordered thirteen episodes. This was partly due to financial reasons, as the large Australian sets are expensive to dismantle and rebuild. Despite this decision, the producers denied the production was over-budget, with Peter Rice explaining instead the show is "a very expensive... very ambitious television show". Kevin Reilly continued, "We're not in completely uncharted territory here. The start-up cost for the series is definitely on the high end. But it's not some bank-breaking series". With only 10% of Cretaceous-era dinosaurs recorded in the fossil record, the producers decided to supplement the series with ones which might have existed; paleontologist Jack Horner was brought in to help create realistic creatures for the period and different from those of the Jurassic Park film franchise.
In June 2010, the first cast member was announced – Jason O'Mara as Jim Shannon. In late August, Allison Miller joined the cast. In September, Deadline Hollywood reported that Stephen Lang signed on to play the role of Commander Taylor. An executive producer, David Fury, left the series as a result of creative differences. In September, Shelley Conn landed the female lead role. In October, Mido Hamada was cast as a security head, while Landon Liboiron, Naomi Scott, and Alana Mansour were cast as the three children. In November, Christine Adams was cast as Mira. In May 2011, Rod Hallett was added as a series regular.
The cast and crew returned to Queensland, Australia on May 20, 2011 to continue production on the first season. Filming commenced on May 25, 2011. With a long production process on the series, it was announced that the first season would consist of thirteen episodes to finish airing in December 2011.

I am gonna give it a try. :bounce: What I didn't like about the first episode is that I felt like they revealed too much, should have been kept more mysterious. It was shown that the son wrote these formulas and that he rebels his father which could have been unraveled later  Cast wise, I really like Jason O'Mara - he is quite the DILF :hearts: and the soldier who is into the daughter is super cute, too :)

Sounds like there will be a bit of drama...dunno if I wouldn't wish they'd put aside the love triangle thingy and focus on the mystey lol we'll see how it will turn out.

haha I actually agree with that, but the dinosaur part is enough for me to want to watch it! loll I'm not sure if I like the fact that they made up dinosaurs species tho, it can be really interesting but hopefully they won't put too much unrecorded species. They already had one in the last episod I think, the "slashers".

Not bad then, at least they're believable.:oh:

Vincey!
Oct 3rd, 2011, 04:54 PM
well from what I know, I've never heard of that species before and I read that theycreated other species with the help of paleonthologist to make it believable. Those would be animals that could have been there during that time. Gotta admit that put any reptile-like animal and i'm sure it will look believable lol.

Still wondering what kind of idiots would warp back in time before that meteor strike in the Yucatan that wiped out the dinosaurs and 90% of all life. You would think they could have instead settled in a nice period of time such as the Neolithic or Paleolithic eras, that didn't have vicious dinosaurs, giant spiders and other disgusting slithering things.

Vincey!
Oct 3rd, 2011, 09:09 PM
Yes I wondered the same but I know the writer probably decided it would be much more interesting that way because of the danger but on the story side, did they PICKED that periodo f time or did it got at that time kinda by chance? I don't remember if they said it in the first episod if that era was picked on purpose. Also you gotta remember that the Era lasted millions of years before the Meteor hit the Earth and I'm guessing they would come up with a plan to destroy that meteor with all that technology they have.

Alfred Hitchcock must be turning in his grave after that blatant and badly written rip off of The Birds. :o
And this series isn't making Jason O'Mara any more likable to me. Why do TV shows always force such self righteous characters on us.

well I think they don't want to destroy the dinosaurs :p The point is to go back in time and not make the same mistakes as before. They want to scare them away if possible :p.

Anyway, I think this episod was fun to watch  It's nothing revolutionary but it's divertising to me.

I have a feeling this much hyped show won't make it past the first season. It lacks the mystery and frankly seeing CGI dinosaurs chase them around will become tiring. A great show needs primarily a great script and not special effects, not to mention it must be a very expensive show to produce and mediocre ratings won't help it either

I'm giving this show one more chance to impress me next week.

The acting is sup-par, the plot has blatant deficiencies, the writing is sloppy, and the arc of where I see the series going looks rough.

I shouldn't, but I can't stop comparing this show to Lost. However, TN is the equivalent of Lost's fecal matter so far.

I haven't seen the show but the average global temperature during that time was a lot higher than today. Not to mention the CO2 PPM levels. It's questionable whether humans would be able to cope with it.

They should've picked the mid Permian period as the world warmed after the end of an ice age, much like today's world. And the CO2 levels whilst higher than today, would be more tolerable than Cretaceous.

That would put it around 275 million years ago.

I really liked this episod. Not because it was full of action like in the others but because they put the storyline back in place. I was surprised to see this but it seems that each episod is written by one or 2 different writters from the other episods...I think it's weird to not have the same authors for the whole serie, might explain why it's a bit blurry and lacking suspense so far...

haha yes so am I! I think the episods are not made properly to create a suspense. Like if you take this week episod Taylor arrests Shannon and then we see all the explaination...I think the suspense would have been much better if the episod would have ended when Taylor arrest Shannon then you'll have to watch the next one if you wanna know what's gonna happen, but no hey! Shannon is already released 10 minutes after that lol.

I love the show tho! :D

Not that I am completely agreeing, but even we take this for true the damage that the first 5-6 abysmal episode have caused is irretrievable :help: The whole, essential idea might be intriguing , however, the execution sucks badly! :tape:

So I just watched the 2 hours season 1 finale!1 It was awesome! Hands down the best episode of the season!!! There was everything in it! Romance, sadness, action, dinosaur, frustration, suspence, touchiness, cuteness.

I'm so sad they killed Wash and I really thought Mira was going to jumpship but anyway this was just very well put together. I loved Skye in this she was awesome! and Elizabet too lol Girls really made that plan work! I still think they try to go too fast, the show would get much more suspence and probably viewer if thy'd make the story go a bit slowly and ending the episode with a big question marks, suspence something lol to want to watch the next episode to know what's happening.

GOOD NEWS! They sure made it sound like there would be a 2nd season, at least there's plenty of story to talk about. That really showed that this show could be much more ineresting and a real success!

lol I don't think the fact they will have less technology will make the show less costly. I do think the last episodes were a thousand miles better than the first ones, hopefully it will be enough for the show to be approved. Why would that be Vikings? The boat part was a woman head, I thought vikinds had dragon on their boat? Drakkar? loll We'll see :P I hope!

OMG I just finally watched the 2 hours finale. It was EPIC :hysteric: I want a Season 2 now! It looks interesting with the new mysteries about the ship from the 18th century introduced there :speakles:

Oh and btw I have a question, was Jim in the same container with the carnivore dinosaur when he was being transported back to 2419?:scared: Why wasn't him eaten by that beast? :speakles:

Would there be a 2nd season? Any news about this? I'm looking for it now after this epic finale

haha yes I thought the same thing, JIm was in the same container lol...I guess the container was too small to let the dino eat Jim? lol I sure hope there will be a 2nd season! Of course the serie is not perfect and I find it funny how they make things happen like that dino container thing lol they make things easy but that's a really entertaining show right now and i so hope it's gonna get renewed. I heard they were trying to get the set moved from Australia...I'm not sure why but I guess it's expensive there?

Julian.
Dec 27th, 2011, 04:38 PM

It's chances of renewal for a second season will almost certainly depend upon how midseason series Alcatraz, Touch, and The Finder do. All three are hour long dramas.

Also if Hugh Laurie decides to quit House, that will almost certainly be shelved which will increase it's chances.

If 2 of those series do as well as Terra Nova did in ratings, but prove to be cheaper to produce, it may very well be lights out for this show.

Ah! That's so silly to decid wether or not a fall show will be renewed depending on how midseasons show are doing. Terra Nova would take some time anyway to film and produce if they want it to be ready for next fall :s

Well, midseasons don't always necessarily stay midseasons forever. Sometimes there are rhyme or reason for them being in the midseason, sometimes there isn't. ;)

Take 30 Rock for example which is midseason this year due to the pregnancy of Tina Fey. No affect on the type of show.

Or Happy Endings which premiered midseason last year. It was picked up for a second series and is thriving as a Fall premier this year. ;)

Another leading factor was ABC studios produced Scrubs, so ABC had incentive and even less cost involved to continue on with the show.

Sorry but I don't share the disappointment for the cancellation of this show. Producers have only themshelves to blame. They could have put more weight on the storyline and create much drama instead of emphasizing on special effects.

The only bad thing is that we have too little supernatural/sci-fi shows on TV whereas crap like medical/procedural dramas go on forever.

Someone cancel the Private Practices/CSIs of Tv asap!
