One of the greatest American rock bands in history have called it quits after more than three decades together. What was their best tune?

"The One I Love".

I like "Stand" too. They weren't too bad :). Not a fan of "Everybody Hurts" and "Losing My Religion".

I also have to go with 'The One I Love'. Don't get why it's not in OP.

Saw them live in Paris and in London around 1984 and 1985. Great band. When Bill Berry left, i knew that the band was to going to split one day. Peter Buck lives in Seattle, Mick Mills in Georgia and Michaël Stipe close to the stars.

I will never forget 1st time i listened "Radio free Europe".

Jesus, grow up.

The One I Love is a bad oversight on my part. Strange Currencies, Drive, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite and Orange Crush also could have been included, but there wasn't room.

Great band, glad I got to see them live before they called it a day.

Many great songs but "Drive" and "The One I Love" stands out a bit for me:)

'Nightswimming' is a standout song.

What happens to me its that i end up liking more unknown songs rather than hits. In this case, Welcome to the Occupation (classic REM guitar effect) , I Don't Sleep, I Dream (the pianno, beyond haunting) and 9-9.
But probably the two albums i like best are Monster (the delayed guitars for me are hypnotic there) and the riffs in Lifeīs rich Pageant( specially Begin the Begin and What If We Give It Away).
Buck still is one of my fav guitar players. I donīt know exactly what it is, but he just plays different than anyone else. Has a signature only of his own.

i like plenty of their songs, it's difficult to decide. i guess "nightswimming" stands out as a song, "drive" as well but more for the video and i used to practice playing bass guitar to "orange crush", so it deserves a mention. but then so do many other songs.

i don't think it's a bad thing if a great rock band breaks up, r.e.m. could have done it even earlier.

New Adventures in Hi-Fi is a great, underrated CD.

"Nightswimming" and "Man on the Moon" are also faves.

It is too difficult for me to pick a single best song. They have too many great ones (not including Shiny Happy People, Stand, or Crush with Eyeliner).
