View Full Version : The Social Networking Battle

On the same day that Facebook gets another terrible new makeover, Google+ opens its doors to the public. Hopefully this will see the less irritating people of the world jump ship from Facebook to less irritating social networks such as Twitter, Tumblr and (hopefully) Google+.

Anyway, which social networks do you use and which one is your favourite?

I have a facebook, a twitter and a tumblr, I quite like tumblr it's much different and easier than twitter to share images or videos. Twitter is good to follow people's schedule or thought really useful for tennis lol...Fb is just a way to directly connect with people. SO to me they have 3 different purposes. I used to have a myspace but I haven't been on it since ages, so I didn't count it lol

I have a Facebook, which I used to play regularly, and twitter, which I rarely use. BTW, what's wrong with FB? I haven't experienced any change yet.

Something about subsriptions and top stories and hiding the log out button  I hate how it keeps changing the way privacy settings work, so I'm glad to have jumped ship to Google+ today.

I think I'll still use Twitter the most though.

I mostly use IRC to catch up with my European & across the Atlantic contacts. Perhaps, I might join Twitter (almost real-time messaging feature) but no plans yet. No other social or chat tools except my ever-reliable iPhone 4 as I prefer voice over texting.

My vote for IRC & Twitter :)

FB has not been fun since they killed all the applications. The new group/page formats are extremely stupid and pointless.

I only use Twitter and LinkedIn. I have no use for social networks that force you to share your real identity and real life. I've never understood why people share everything so freely on Facebook. Ten years ago everyone was terrified to even reveal their first name.

I am hardly ever on Facebook anymore because I can't stand to hear about people who have happy lives. It makes me even more depressed to be honest.

I'm all about Twitter though. I was a very late adopter. I think I just really got into it earlier this year. But it's so amaze.

It's usually a mix of both real life and online contacts. And even then "know" can be as irrelevant as a vague acquaintance.

I mean I'm not looking down on people who use it and I recognize its value, but I am surprised by how quickly the internet has changed.

It's so live and current. To use an example. I was at work when the Casey Anthony verdict came out. On my phone via twitter, I knew the jury was getting ready to announce the verdict. So then I got up to where there are TVs at my job to see the verdict live. I would never have been able to do that from FB. And not just because FB is blocked at my job. I mean, Twitter is blocked also but it just makes much more sense. It's also been very valuable in reporting the uprisings in Egypt, Tunisia, etc. Twitter is just so awesome.

I know what you mean but I realized a long time ago that FB, and well the internet in general, is all one big facade. Nobody stays posting about the real shit that goes down in their lives. It's all rose-buds, jobs, promotions, parties, boyfriends and girlfriends...never about foreclosures, failed exams, STDs and baby-daddy dramas that they're really going through.

That's true but the same can be said for twitter where people with PUBLIC profiles will be posting their whereabouts day in day out. SMH. I'm following this guy that has some automated thing where his location is tweeted like automatically... so all day it's going off about how he's at this hotel or that street and I'm like nucca you know that someone that wanted to rob your house could do that ish with ease, right??

I guess a lot of people are like that. There are plenty of old friends on FB that I love and are real. But it's too much to have to read about everybody else. So sometimes I'll just go and look up their threads or whatever. It's not in me to be fake. So I post whatever is on my mind. Not that anyone cares lol.

When all your things used to be on one home page, like with myspace. That was before they made it so that when you to your profile, all you see is a boring wall, and brought in all the tabs. There used to be a lot of applications for games, organisers etc but a lot of it disappeared after they changed the home page layout.

Facebook, of course. Twitter is alright but it doesn't have as many features as Facebook and I hate how there's a character limit on the posts!

 IKR! I remember when MySpace was THE THING when it first came out. Now basically no one I know uses it. I can't believe I actually thought that I'd never swap from MySpace to Facebook... Facebook is so much easier in comparison. I still remember wondering how the hell I was to "personalise" my page. I only found out when someone told me you have to use HTML code and stuff. :tears:

I logged in to MySpace for the first time in like 3 years yesterday, it's changed so much. All my custom layout had disappeared :hysteric: Worst thing was looking at the old pictures :tape:

Hopefully Google+ will catch on eventually. I like the idea that you can share certain things with certain people, whereas on Facebook (even though they've just copied that feature) I had to delete everyone that I didn't want knowing any of my business. Not to mention Facebook likes to keep toying with the privacy settings :o

I watched the facebook conference yesterday and it's just getting creepier and creepier. I don't get why people feel the need to share everything: what song they just listened to, what movie they just watched, where they went jogging, what they bought, what news story they just read, and all in real time! It's getting to a point where you can automatically reveal everything you do, see, hear and think. And tens of millions of people will do it. Why?

So what's Google+ about, exactly?

I use Facebook regularly (daily I suppose) and Twitter in seldom, impulsive moments of boredom. Twitter's appeal has totally worn off IMO. I never jumped on the Tumblr fad, I suppose people just make a page out of boredom?

It's similar to Facebook's in the sense that you make a profile and post updates/pictures/etc. that appear on a news feed/stream. But your "friends" can be placed in different groups which they call "circles". So you can put your close friends in one circle, have another circle for family, and put people you went to school with but don't really know/like in another circle. You get to choose what updates you share with which circles (or all if you want).

It needs more people on it for it to get better in my opinion, but I think people are reluctant to leave Facebook or try something new because all their friends are on Facebook.

I'm on Facebook, Google+, twitter and I recently signed up for LinkedIn.

I hate social networking because I hate putting all this information out there but it's become a necessity nowadays (for things like job hunting or friends and family want you to see their photos). Until recently, most of the time I spent on Facebook, I spent adjusting privacy settings and blocking every new game that popped up. Then I started outrightly blocking certain people because they posted too much, shared information I didn't care for, or I honestly just hated them.

I train my brain to ignore posts by people I see on a regular basis so that, when I see them, I could have an actual real-life conversation with them. When someone says, "Did you see what I posted on Facebook?" or "Did you like my comment?" I just pretend that I never saw it.

The one phenomenon that drives me crazy are all the people who've used it to hook up with people from the past. I've seen people travel thousands of miles to get together with that person from high school or college that "they always wondered about."
