I mean, can players focus with these huge screens literally on court? :help:

They had to have something to cover up the lack of advertising.

In all seriousness. It does look purely cosmetic. This is not a purpose built facility. It's a muni facility where they are holding a pro tennis event. They've got chain link all the way around the "center court". To make it look presentable on TV, they've got to put something up in the background to block out the garbage in the background that can otherwise be seen through the fence.

We love our big TV screens at sports venues in Texas, just like I love Lena's bangs.

Definitely one of the smallest on tour :tape:

Technically, it's a private resort, not a municipal facility, but it definitely not built for hosting a pro-level event.

This site used to host a USTA-level event (TOB is among the former winners here) and they decided to upgrade it to a WTA-level. While there have been some positives in terms of good, supportive crowds from most reports and pretty decent buzz in the local tennis community, I do have to wonder what the quality of the facility and the heat (which is really much worse than usual this year) is doing to the player's impression. One gets a sense some of them are ready to head to NYC.

There are other venues in the D/FW area that could handle an event like this. SMU used to host the old Virginia Slims tournament and has indoor and outdoor courts. Grapevine has some advantages in terms of location, parking, etc.

I'll take some time off from researching Lena's bangs and see if some upgrades are planned. This may just be a first-year situation and there may be better things to come.

But for those of us who have been waiting 20 years for pro tennis to come back to North Texas, it's been wonderful.

You know everything is bigger in Texas, don't you?

Jelena would love this screen.

That's probably the suckiest Center Court of a tennis tournament

I do not know what type of screens are those, but I see it getting hit by a Lisciki serve and by a Gorges forehand shot, and they kept working OK.

The location is great, but yeah it is a work in progress, I went tuesday and requested a "stadium" ticket but I wanted it on the west side stand to not have the sun in my face, but the ticket lady told me that they have not finished that one yet, so we are only selling for the east side.
The staff is very nice, but I think they should schedule the games at a later time because of the heat.

It would have been nice if Lena was still active and somehow was in this tourney.

This TF would initiated a petition drive to have her meet you in private.

Hopefully they will make necessary upgrades :) I really would like this event to last though!

Maybe New Haven can share
Their center court is massive for the size of the event.

It is the first year...at a site that has never held tennis before...I live in Dallas Ft Worth and there are so many other places they should of put it. Also this need to be an indoor even in the late part or early part of the season. Dallas weather is not predictable enough for an outdoor event...and it is way to hot to play in the summer.

Is this the same venue as the men's challenger event?

Just saw some pictures of the new facilities, much better. Check it out on Facebook. Texas Tennis Open or something like that.

These small, intimate tournaments in the US are great. Winstom-Salem seems quite cool for the guys.

Ooh, these courts have come a long way! I especially like the two courts back to back; it would be awesome to sit at the top of the stands and view both matches at once. ;)

I'm going later this week and will, of course, be spewing all sorts of opinions.

Missed the opening rounds because my son was playing in his tournament.

Are those temporarily stands? The ones for the London 2012 Paralympics are temporarily.

Last year they mostly functioned as scoreboards and were used to show some highlights on changeovers and stuff. Not really distracting.

Is this the same venue as the men's challenger event?

No. The mens' challenger is at an indoor venue in Dallas, while this is technically in Grapevine, which is very near the DFW airport.

MANY improvements were made this year however. There's no big screen on center court anymore, and the center court grandstand is much better (and bigger).
