This thread will be opened on a trial basis; if all goes well we may allow it to stay.

It is to be used for live commentary for matches, be very clear this is not a live scoring thread.

This will be used as the official thread, new threads are not to be created for each match, this will result in the closure of this thread.

Enjoy!!

What's the difference between a live commentary thread and a live scoring thread? As in we can't say the score?

What's the difference between a live commentary thread and a live scoring thread? As in we can't say the score?

Live Scoring = new post for each point.
Live comentary = posts about the level of play/how many people in the stands/about the tactics of a match and so on. If someone mentions the score its fine, but we do not want this thread to turn into a glorified scoring thread.

So I'll surmise that discussing things like fistpump frequency, ball-bouncing tactis, grunt loudness, racquet destruction, ballboy abuse and temper tantrums should be allowed as well. :oh: I think I'll enjoy this one.

I prefer the current format. Having live scoring/commentary on the specific tournament forum attracts more users to that forum, which encourages participation in games (PYW, FITD, etc.) and threads discussing live streams, TF folks attending the tournament, etc. Without those "OOP and Scores" threads, I would probably be on GM all the time. GM is too cluttered as it is, while specific tournament forums aren't nearly active enough.

If we're going to have a live commentary thread, why exclude live scoring? Where will we go to post scores? If someone is following the match exclusively through TF (i.e. no access to Livescore or a stream), they'll need to have two threads open in order to receive complete coverage of the match(es). Currently, they only need one.

All of this, plus it's nearly impossible to draw the line between "live commentary" and pure "livescoring".

I sort of understand where people are coming from when they asked for this; they want to be able to comment on the matches while they are being played without having their comments buried under a flood of cheering/scoring posts. Personally, I never had any problems with that; TF livescoring threads can be surprisingly quiet at times.

I don't get why live commentary, scores, or a combination of the two has to be on GM. What will happen to the tournament forums if live discussion is allowed here? Is this a movement toward increased participation in GM, and less participation in the tournament forums? We don't need more people roaming around GM. As for the silly threads, people are going to continue to post them. They had the option of posting in an appropriate thread before, and chose not to; why will that change now? Besides the absence of live scoring, this thread will be no different than the current "OOP and Scores" threads.

Another concern -- any live commentary will become almost unsearchable now. If every match from every day from every tournament is packed into this thread, how will users be able to search for a particular post that interests them? Let's say someone wants to read what people were saying during a match from six months ago. Will they just randomly click on pages within the thread until they find what they want? Under the current system, we can at least search by day and tournament.

Thank God.

I never understood the point by point coverage. Is the official WTA website banned in some places?

That site takes a long time to load with a slow connection. TF takes almost no time, except when there's a database error. And people don't just post point-by-point updates (15-0, 30-0, etc.); they post what happened during points (DF, ace, FH winner, long rally, great point, etc.). Are we not allowed to do that anymore?

Plus Challenger forum....no where else is there a place anywhere.

Why can't the challenger forum have its own OOP and Scores thread(s)?

dsanders06
Aug 25th, 2011, 04:04 PM
I think it's a good idea. There's so many times where you want to discuss something about a match while it's going on (how shit a player's serve is, or something), but can't in GM... and the tournament forums are always a ghost town, so trying to start serious discussions in there is pointless.

Anyone who wants to just cheer and post five-word score-by-score updates usually just do it in the player's forum these days anyway; the actual livescores threads in the tournament forums have been redundant for a while now.

Thank you guys!

As for the OOP thread vs. this one - I don't think this will cross the other. I doubt anyone will be livescoring in this thread or talking about how each point is won. Rather, it's a live discussion of drama, tantrums, and other storylines in a match that would qualify as livescoring in GM.

But if it isn't a success in the end, this thread will go away, so no big.

I'm on the West Coast, and this match is on ESPN2 right now. As well, it is on ESPN3.com, without the commentary. It's great. Just Lynn Welch.

But the crowd, such as it is, really is not engaged, though it doesn't seem that bad from my point of view. However, rallies are not long.

Pavs certainly looks better in person, having seen her very close in Cincinnati. Her weight is exaggerated a bit on television. What I'm more worried about is that the Roland Garros champ can't pull in a better crowd in New Haven. Tennis in the U.S. is so under-appreciated sometimes :o. she CAN play aggressively and play well while doing so, but considernig she hasn't been playing like that for over 2 years now it'll be hard to find that sort of game in her again.

I honestly think she should just resort to her passive game for now and work on her aggressive game during the asian season. She can't afford to crash and burn at another grand slam, especially on her favourite surface, as the world no. 1.

Also I'm pretty sure her dad will be there with her until the end of the US Open because didn't they say that her coach isn't free right now?

Is there something wrong with Na? She's playing awful. I really thought her game had become more varied and controlled (AO and RG this year), which won me over as a fan. Now it looks exactly like back in 2007, 2008, when she just played with no thought to point construction or rallying at all. :o

Li Na is not playing like a veteran.

She should have known by now she need to adjust something in her game.
Give a different look to the youngster, mix it up a little.

She is just stuck with the same game plan.

Having said all that, I still believe she still in this match.
She just needs one break to plant a seed of doubt in petra's mind.

That just shows that majors are just an illustration of how efficient a player was abled to keep an excellent form for 15 days... this is what happened for Li in RG where she was able to keep a certain style of safe game through the 2 weeks requested to lift La Coup des Mousquetaires.

She's a streaky player, a big hitter with 0 margin and very suspicious tactics - she'll always be that way... it's really not a surprise to see her good ol'self back... that's the real her, not that prefabricated game for clay.

Am I the only one who's been quite impressed by Wozniacka tonight? She's forcing the issue more than usual... hitting her forehand with more authority (there was a particularly great one on the run in that tiebreak), hitting some big serves at key points. Impressive stuff.

But the key test will be if she plays like that if she's in a hole in any matches at the US Open, rather than resorting to her usual, safe game.

Patrick345
Aug 27th, 2011, 12:13 AM
That was some massive choke by Schiavone at 5-3 and in the tiebreak. Woz back to being her usual self, but nothing else. McHale and Schiavone still dictated the vast majority of the points.

Caro doesn't just wait for the opponent to make errors, she forces her opponent to make errors. And that's as good as making winners.

I think you're seeing something that's not there because you want to see it. She is also playing Schiavone -- not a Lisicki, Cibulkova, Williams, etc so it might seem like she is in every rally because ... she is in every rally. ;)

Three such forced errors came from Fran early in the TB, when Caro went from 0-1 to 3-1. Three great points from Caroline, forcing errors from Fran (actually that's when the stat was shown - great spotted by the producer)

Hmm, maybe. I don't know though, because I actually went in assuming that she'd be bad, so I probably WANTED to see the opposite

You're right though that the quality of opponent may be a factor... Schiavone leaves a LOT more short balls than the type of players Woz would come up against in the later rounds of Slams, so it remains to be seen whether she could be aggressive against those sorts of players.

Morita is capable counterpuncher...Robson won't get anywhere if she continues to walk on the court instead of running:facepalm:

Robson might not be doing so well atm, but her strokes are so beautiful. She can do anything on both wings. And this match is really all in her hands.
