View Full Version : Best tennis match-ups (From an entertainment stand-point)

For me the best tennis match ups always involve Venus and or Serena. In fact I think the two best, most entertaining tennis matches happened the same year. (2005 Australian Open and 2005 Wimbledon). It's amazing that both Venus and Serena came back from match point to win their matches and I think that 2005 Wimbledon match between Davenport and Venus was the best of all time and I think Serena is the most entertaining player of all time.

Best match-ups are:
Venus vs. Davenport
Serena vs. Sharapova (Even though Serena has been snatching that blonde wig the past 7 years)
Serena vs. Capriati
Serena vs. Henin
Serena vs. Jankovic
Venus vs. Jankovic
Venus vs. Sharapova
Sharapova vs. Dementieva
Sharapova vs. Myskina
Sharapova vs. Wozniacki
Serena vs. Davenport
Henin vs. Mauresmo
Serena vs. Mauresmo

Is there anyone in the history of the sport that has had as many "rivals" as Serena?

Steffi might have had more rivals (Seles,Navartilova,Sanzchez Vicriao, Martinez, Zvereva, Hingis, M.J. Ferandez) Just to name a few. I always loved watching justine and kim, don't know why

I think because their games were so different, and it was interesting to see who would come out on top (except in slam finals). Obviously, that was back in their first careers.

The OP has listed some great matchups, and I'll reiterate a few.

Venus vs Serena, classic, even if people complained.
Venus vs Davenport, classic battle
Davenport vs Serena
Elena D. vs Serena

Aga is almost always interesting to me, except when she plays Woz, that's always a thumbs down.

Myskina always gave you good bang for your buck. Can't think of a particular matchup, but I would probably watch most of her matches (I will never watch her Olympics one ever again, though ).

Vera Z vs. Vera Z.

Amelie vs Hingis

Dementieva against anyone bores me. Her game at the start of her career was more exciting to watch. After that, she began to play like a robot

Kuznetsova-Henin.

Due to the predictability factor, no. Just no :help:

I just don't find either of the Williams girls to be entertaining players at all. Although that's probably more an indictment of what tennis has turned into in the last decade or so than anything else.

I find the more interesting rivalries to be matchups of contrasting styles. My favourite rivalry of the last 20 years was Graf/Novotna. Other ones I liked were Sabatini/Graf and Hingis/Davenport. Not necessarily the highest quality tennis, but interesting duels.

Nothing comes close to Evert/Navratilova though. That had everything.

In recent years:
Henin-Mauresmo
Henin-Serena
Serena-Hingis
Ivanovic-Jankovic
Henin-Clijsters
Sharapova-Kuznetsova
Dementieva-Jankovic
Wozniacki-Zvonareva :oh:

No, that's more of an indictment of you. Learn to appreciate the times at hand.

Monica Seles v. Steffi Graf, another great match up.

It's nothing to do with the times, it's about contrasting style. The reason I don't like Seles v Graf is the same reason I don't like Williams v Williams. Too similar, ball basher against ball basher.

Great rivalries and great matchups are not the same thing. The best of both are when they coincide, but it's not always the case that they do.

I was thinking about this yesterday, and apart from the epic and nearly always overrated "rivalries" between top players that have been mentioned so far, there seem to be few WTA matchups that nearly always bring good tennis out of both players involved.

The only one I can think of out of the top of my head is Kirilenko vs Groenefeld. They played two good matches in 2005-2006, with both in what was probably the best moment of their careers and playing near their very best level.

Then why wouldn't you find Serena or Venus playing, say, Henin or Mauresmo entertaining? There's contrast there

I always like the build-up to the Henin/Sharapova matches, and they occasionally delivered.
Though I remember the rather huge hype for the YEC '06 semifinal (since Pova was on a winning streak), but it turned out to be fairly anticlimactic to say the least.

This list is ugh mostly..
Although Serena-Capriati were one of the best rivaries of late, and also Serena vs Mauresmo, Henin were great matches as well.
Venus vs Davenport gets a respectable honorable mention too.

Serena-Henin (even though I didn't like Henin it was interesting to see these two play each other, plus the differing game styles made it quite entertaining)

Sharapova-Henin for the same reasons

Serena-Venus was amazing to behold when they were both in their primes

Special mention to Venus-Davenport as well :)

Not much of one.

Then I guess you haven't enjoyed a single match-up in the past 10 years, because that's as much a contrast as you're going to get

I'm not saying I haven't enjoyed tennis in that time. You can still have high quality matches without the players necessarily being a great match-up. And great/entertaining match-ups don't have to be the highest quality.

Novotna wasn't as good as Seles, but I still preferred watching Graf play the Czech rather than the American.

IMO a high quality pairing has three factors:

1) 2 great players
2) A great rivalry
3) A great style match-up

Very few have all three. Legendary rivalries like Evert/Navratilova and Sampras/Agassi did. Graf/Novotna had 3 and a bit of 1. The Williams sisters have 1 and 2. Serena/Henin had 1, 2 and a smidge of 3.

I think 3 is the one that is missing the most from the modern game. It's one of my favourite things about tennis, and I think we're a lot worse off without it.

because that's as much a contrast as you're going to get
Pretty much. Its the homogenisation of surfaces. Makes everyone play pretty much the same, because a defensive baseline style with a lot of topspin will get you the most success pretty much all year round.

Hard to imagine someone who plays S&V getting anywhere on the WTA these days, for example. Even a touch player like Hingis probably wouldn't get very far against the top players either.
