Stosur is so useless on HC  Petkovic game is not enough stable to be effective for 2 weeks  it will be the usual hot mess, but the winner won't be a big surprise

Ugh, it'll be either Serena or Maria. A lot of mess may happen up until someone holds the trophy but the obvious winner will surface.

We'll see what happens. Toronto was supposed to be the tournament of the year(with the match of the CENTURY in the semis) but instead it was a scorching pile of horseshit for the most part. The first week of Wimbledon was the best first week of any slam I can remember, yet the matches we're exactly what I'd call marquee matchups (Vee/KDK, Na/Lisick, One more slipping my mind)

And guys, stop assuming Serena is going to just show up and win. That's what everyone said at this time two years ago.

I'm kind of worried for Serena. The tournament is almost too wide open for her to win this year. I hope she doesn't blow it and lose to some scrub.

Radwanska has her chance :oh:

She is one of the favorites. Serena is the first choice if healthy, but look at this hardcourt season-it seems that the solid players who normally make it to the QF and then get overpowered have a chance to steal one not on clay. Ironically, an in form Wozniacki would do well here. Expect a deep run from Radwanska and Petkovic.

Remember the K.Bondarenko/Wickmayer QF a couple of years ago? New York rewards streaky players with big forehands, so i'm expecting deep runs from Goerges and Groth.

A Oudin-like figure will emerge out of no where to provide a side-show excitement and make you forget you worries:)
Preferably, I wish that figure be a young american, which will provide extra coverage and interest to the USO.

This. As bad as '09 was, we had a lot of fun with Oudin and the Serena incident. Something similar will catch our interest this year. And like '09, we'll probably see a deserving champion trounce an unworthy opponent in the final.

The prospect of Petkovic winning it, or even making the SF, is frightening. The media will do to her what it did to Wozniacki -- only more, because Andrea "has personality." I doubt it will happen, though, because Petkovic's best tennis is not even top-20 at the moment.

Alhough she has been winning with it, I am not yet totally sold on this new calmer, zen-like Serena approach.

My concern she might be too laid back and might be caught off guard by a scrub, and by the time Serena realises it and trying to summon a higher level of motivation, it may not be there because she is "out of practice" turning it on.
It sound far fetched and irrational, but fans are not always rational when talking about the fear of their fave, and I am no excpetion.

Petkovic would be cut out of central casting for this role, for the reason your cited.
She loves the limelight and has a wealth matrerial to keep the media interested.

2 of the highest profile players on the tour, Serena & Maria are in good form.
It has a chance to be a good major.
Kim not playing, Na & Petra not winning much on hardcourt this summer, pretty good chance 4 different slam winners this year.

Jimmie48
Aug 19th, 2011, 08:36 PM
The tournament is surely wide-open, for all the wrong reasons though. So many top players out of form, we could very well witness an upset.

Ill slit my wrists if Petkovic wins though

No offence but if we end up with a final a la Petkovic vs Peng or something else ridiculous like that I'll shoot myself :o

We need the big guns. We need attitude and tempers. We need Maria vs Serena!!!

This is another asterik Slam. Vultures who win Slams in weak fields (such as Sharapova) must be LOVIN' it!

Best USO player (Saint Kim) is OUT.
Former champions/finalists are retired: Hingis, Henin, Pierce, Davenport, Capriati (I know she's only been a semifinalist).
Other former champions/finalists are in horrible form or injured: Venus, Woz, Kuznetsova, Jankovic.

It's pretty much Serena and the 127 clowns. Which is a shame because Serena is at about 50% of her level when she won in 1999 or 2002.

A serious contender. Why? QF at AO this year was her career best there, same with the QF at F and 3rd round at W. She already has been to the 4th round at the USO, and in regards to her health, I trust her more than Venus, Vika, Domi, Peng, etc.

Go look at Sharapova's 2008 Aussie draw, ****.
Oops, nope, go look at any slam she's won.
I had a feeling she wasn't going to win Wimbledon this year because her draw was so much easier than it normally is when she wins a slam, but that's just me being superstitious.

Ugh, this, so much.

In 2004 she beat Davenport and Serena, the defending champion.
In 2006 she beat the #1 player in the world, who had just won Oz and Wimbledon, and the #2 player, who had just won the French.
In 2008 she had a draw from hell. Vesnina, Davenport, Dementieva, Henin, Jankovic (who had just beaten Serena) and an inspired Ivanovic.

Her slams were anything but easy. She played her heart out against the best of the best.

And I'm the first one agreeing that her Wimbledon final this year was a fluke. She had the easiest, crappiest draw ever, but at least she lost to someone who was playing scary good tennis in the final.

Serena isn't losing this one. Do you seriously think Serena would waste her time winning two small tournaments before the US Open and not come home with the big prize?

She'll conserve energy for the first few rounds. Then when some non factor has her on the ropes in the third set GOATrena will grace us with her appearance at Arthur Ashe Stadium. We will all be marveled, excited, inspired at how great GOATrena is and what she brings to the world of tennis. Then we will gather here on tennisforum.com to praise her name. It will be thunderous, thunderous I tell ya!!:bounce::bounce:

That would be movie-script kind of stuff, winning her first slam when absolutely nobody expects it. But it is extremely unlikely, Id be very happy with QF.

If Sharapova and Serena gets the same half or worse the same quarter, this year USO will be VERY boring for me! Unless Sharapova step up a big notch Serena should beat her in the final, this would be the best quality final tournment. I'm hoping for a Vika / Sharapova and a Seren/Na Li SF with Venus making the QF.
