View Full Version : Players who are polite to ballboys

I've noticed that there are very few players who are polite to the ball boys and ball girls. Which players are polite to them?

I know that Petrova always says thank you to the ball boys for fetching her stuff. Sam Stosur is also polite to ball boys and ball girls.

That's hard to think of off the top of my head.
Sharapova? She doesn't put her anger on the ball boys and always nods politely for balls I guess.

Just listening to Petrova talking to ball boys atm. She always says please when she asks the ball boys to take stuff for her.

I do think Sharapova is quite polite with Ballboys so is Ana I think, Serena and Venus are polite to them as well I think.
Anyway most of players get annoyed about their towel, it's when you see if they are polite or not. Azarenka is SO rude to ballboys :tape:

I once read an article by a journalist who had once been a towel boy at a tournament that Stefan Edberg was playing in. Edberg was a perfect gent and chatted with the kid each day. As the lad was collecting towels etc at the end of finals day, he found a sports bag with an envelope on top with his name on it. Inside was a letter, thanking him for his help, wishing him all the best with his forthcoming exams and telling him the contents of the bag were his to keep. The bag was stuffed full of tennis gear.

There never was a classier act in tennis than Stefan Edberg.

Maggie Maleeva always thanked the ball boys when they gave her the first ball of the match.

I liked when Serena gave her earring to a ballboy last week. :p

Petkovic was quite rude in her first match though, shouting "towel!" quite loudly.

I agree though - many players treat them like servants which is not a nice thing to do.

I think most players run the gamut from demanding in a...forceful way to polite. Then you have especially polite players like Nadia and Sam.

I can't think of any high profile player that's actually rude a la Andy Roddick.

As for that Safina video  Has that always been a habit of Safina's? Or is it recent. I know some umpires instruct the ballboys that certain players like the balls on one side or in a certain way. Lynn Welch and Alison Lang do it for the Empress

Amanda Keen (formerly Amanda Janes) was the politest player to ballkids ever.

Proper British middle class:- "two balls please" "one more please" etc...

Always a thanks when she got the ball, a thankyou very much when they got her water juice at changeovers.

But maybe that's cos she only got to play a handful of events with ball kids.

The top players are a bit spoilt with things like line judges and ball kids, so they take them for granted and treat them like crap.

There was an article on Sports Illustrated.com a while back where Wertheim (I think) interviewed a group of ball kids and asked who was nice and who wasn't. They said Sharapova was strict but nice and that Azarenka was really rude.

I remember being @ the Philadelphia 2000 semifinals between Hingis and Kournikova. Hingis was serving, missed the first serve and turned to a ball boy to get a ball. The ball boy was staring ahead blankly, clearly daydreaming. Martina proceded to wave her arms wildly, causing the crowd to chuckle. I felt really bad for the kid, as Hingis kind of embarassed him in front of the whole stadium. He should have been paying attention, obviously, but still...

Last year I was at an Azarenka match in Montreal. She asked for her towel, ball boy didn't hear her so she yelled "TOWEL, TOWEL", he still didn't hear her but saw her looking at him. He ran over to her with a ball and she screamed "TOWEL". I thought the poor kid was going to pee himself. He went to her at the exchange of ends and apologized. She did smile at him but by that point the young fellow was probably scarred for life!

I know that Azarenka and Pennetta aren't the coolest players with the ballkids.
I can remember of Sam being very polite with them.
I think that the ATP players are more polite with the kids than the WTA ones. Yesterday Del Potro was really sweet with a ballgirl and he was losing the match.

I know this is ATP, but Djokovic was playing a match where all the ballgirls were models, and he hit one of them with a ball, and he copped a feel after hugging her.

Using the straight box symbols (lower case) on the same 2 keys that the brackets shown are the upper case of, take only the code (inc. any dashes or underscores) and type it like this: {youtube}KXvW7f8Q1U0{/youtube} using the slash in the 2nd box as here, and it will display:

If you click quote below a post like you were going to quote it in a reply, you'll see what was entered, so click that for any existing Youtube embed and you'll see. And do not use the link or image function in between those boxes. ;)

I only know kids who were ballboys on the ATP tour.

Federer seems to be very nice. And he once was a ballboy himself.

And most journalists who ever met Federer say that he was very nice & friendly!

I am not sure if there is a women with a good reputation like that!?

Maybe Mauresmo or Davenport?

azarenka and jankovic are by far the worst. extremely rude and bad-mannered.
this whole thing about getting the balls always from the same side has gotten way out of hand anyway, even by players who are not directly rude to the ballkids. sometimes i wish one of the kids would scream as loudly as possibly WHAT'S THE FUCKING DIFFERENCE WHETHER YOU GET IT FROM LEFT OR FROM RIGHT, YOU PSYCHO?

I guess it's some kind of superstition, or they just try to keep a specific rhythm. Whatever their reason is, they can be polite in demanding it.

Hi!
I've been a ballboy at the Sony Ericsson Open for 6 years and the wta players that stood out the most are:

Samantha Stosur- says thank you sir every time I gave her a ball or towel.
Maria Sharapova- she's actually nice. Please and thank you. I was surprised.
Dominika Cibulkova- so down to earth in person. She truly is wonderful.
Andrea Petkovic- very nice in person.

Now for the ATP players:

Andy Roddick- he screams to ballboys for stupid reasons. Nobody wants to be on his court.
Roger Federer- always polite.
Rafael Nadal- polite as well.
Guillermo Canas- always very polite and said please and thank you. Cool guy.

one time i was a ballboy at Wimbledon and i was on duty (thats what they call it in tennis terms) anyway, i was doing Kournikova (no, not doin her, i mean looking after her at the changeovers, 'doing-her is just another ballboy/girl tennis term)

well here dear, at the change over, she sat down and i ran and stood beside her chair, i could see right down her top and i couldn't help it but, i got aroused and when she threw me her towel, instead of me catching it it just hung on my erection. i was so embarrassed by she and the crowd just laughed it off (funny thing is, ive gotten used to people laughing it off now)

I don't know if she's always like this, but Dulko was being pretty nice to the ballkids in Dallas, tapping the balls to them and usually saying thanks when they handed her the towel. They had one ballkid who couldn't have been more than eight who made a few gaffes and both Dulko and BoJo were pretty cool about it. But Dulko seemed to be extra nice. She was also super nice to all the fans.
