TC is airing her press conference right now. She said there's a little bit swelling (but not that extreme). She talked to her dad and Venus who advised her to pull out.

Very, very good move. She looked super tired yesterday. She hasn't played that much tennis back to back in long time. It's best she takes a couple of weeks off, relax, practice nicely, and come into the Open with fresh batteries.

Serena just announced on the Tennis Channel, and press conference, that she pulled out of Cincinnati, due to a toe injury.

I'm not surprised. I been saying all along, she looks tired, and Lindsay Davenport, Ian Eagle and Justin G, all said she was tired and fatigued, as the real reason.

I also feel, she didn't want to take the chance of losing to Stosur today, and losing the Aura of Invincibility/inevitability the media has been building up about her (whether real or imagined).

I'm not exactly sure if that's good sportsmanship on Serena's part. If it was Wozniaki or Vika, they would be getting killed (especially if she was going to a wedding for a serious Non Entity like Kim Kardashian, after dropping out).

Most of the time when players lose, we can all speculate why, but most fans of the opposition and the media don't care. Their only response is, 'She lost!" "I don't wanna hear it!" "Better luck next time!" It doesn't matter that they were fatigued. Who cares (except the fans of that player)!!??

Serena took that away from her opposition, tennis fans, and the media. She's smart. This is such a strategic move.

She doesn't want everyone to know, that she's not in the same shape, and can play the same type of tennis like she used to. She has to adjust now. I don't have a problem with that. I was just hoping she could be a true sportswoman about it.

Oh well. Ree is special/different, and can always Be!

 I knew when the organizers didn't put her as the night match that she was going to withdraw. Cincy just didn't want to say it because they wanted to sell tickets.

It's for the better for her U.S. Open preparation, she needs some rest. They really shouldn't have two Premier 5's back to back though, it there was a week between more top players would compete well in both.

Serena didn't want that aura of invincibility taken away from her, that the media recently created, if she lost (as judged by the last set of her last match).

Really? I haven't heard or seen anything about this? Perhaps you are talking about on her Kardashian family show, which would be par for the course, and is on cable TV (one of the dumbest networks ever: E!). She's not widely known enough to have wedding coverage nationally. I'm sure my mother has never heard of this woman.

Anyway, I can't see that marriage lasting more than 3 years.

As for Serena, she was flat and pained by something yesterday, so I really don't think it is a big deal for her to withdraw. Also, it is good for Stosur to get this walkover. I'm sorry Lucie lost, but basically Lucie lost, so that was in her hands.

Serena has lost to some of her rivals in smaller tournaments and then proceeded to beat them badly during slams. When Serena plays her best against the field their is probably only a few women that can give her trouble and that's her sister and a few other players. Otherwise someone like Stosur is beatable especially on hard courts where she doesn't have time to set up making her shank nearly every ball.

I see your point (and that could very well be true). But that wasn't mine.

My point was, the media, would of had to jump off of her bandwagon a little, if she would of lost, and we would of all seen it on TV or in person.

So instead of giving Stosur that satisfaction, and our eyes that sight, she drops out before the match. That's not kool, and very unsportsmanlike, I feel. If it was anyone else (especially Vika or Wozniaki, they would be killed).

Everyone can see she was losing it in her last match (and even in previous matches), but I guess she knew she had hit her limit.

And I couldn't give a damn about Kim Kardashaian, etc., Why does that have to come up in a Tennis press conference at all (as if that's a legitimate reason/excursion)? Poor Stosur. Lol.

But she would of lost anyway

That's why she pulled out. She just didn't want to give the field that satisfaction.

If you/she knew she was going to win, she should of played. That's the point! End of story.

Post PE, Serena now has to manage her schedule, in a particular way it seems. But she's just not telling anyone that (including her fans).

She can say what ever she wants to say. She should of pulled out either, before the tournament, or lost on the field, once she entered. This end result is not kool.

It's all stage/media management for Ree right now, it seems?

Definitely agree. If there's even a slight chance of her being injured I'd want her to pull out. And even though this looks like an obvious tank job you never know. I for one(and most of TF, we have the receipts to prove it,) thought Serena was at the very least... exaggerating her 2010 post-Wimby injury to skip the non-tour events. What do you know, she missed three slams and could have died during that time... Nobody here knows the real story, so give it a rest.

Serena is still a girl who loves fairy tale wedding. And the one's getting married is a friend who also happen to have promised the most fabulous wedding in the USA this year.

This is crazy. We're on a tennis site, and people are actually proud to bring up the idea, that Serena is dropping out of a major tennis tournament she actually started for a wedding of a Non Entity like Kim Kardashian (as if that's a legitimate reason, proper tennis etiquette, sportsmanship and professionalism, or takes away from the fact that she was tired to begin with).

Whoa K. Smh.

Crazy!

This is not exactly the wedding of Nelson Mandela, I may add (though I don't feel it's the ultimate reason for dropping out in the first place).

Everyone has already said she's tired (including Serena)!

It's a circus, as well as tennis.

The "she deserves to have a break" comments are puzzling. She had a whole year of break! If all players "deserved breaks" as much as she does there wouldn't be much of a tour.

In Toronto, she played 6 back to back matches with no days off. Some of them 3 setters. Anyone could tell she was tired and exhausted yesterday. What part don't you understand? So just because she didn't play for a year, she's not supposed to get tired after playing so many matches? She's not a fucking robot. Serena has lost to some of her rivals in smaller tournaments and then proceeded to beat them badly during slams. When Serena plays her best against the field their is probably only a few women that can give her trouble and that's her sister and a few other players. Otherwise someone like Stosur is beatable especially on hard courts where she doesn't have time to set up making her shank nearly every ball.

if anyone else withdrew from a tournament to attend a celebrity wedding (we all know that's the real reason even though SW cited injury) they'd be taken to the woodshed here. SW does it and all we get is 'get well soon' or 'smart move so she can be fresh for US Open'. Why take up a spot in the draw when you know you're going to withdraw? :o

Because Serena already won Stanford and Toronto and I quite frankly don't know why she bothered showing up at this event anyway? I don't agree with two premier events back to back. Serena played enough she's won two titles and got a lot of matches. Also, Serena was probably tired in Toronto she had six matches in six days she got no day off. It was just too much. Serena's decision is a wise one I am also glad she gave Stosur a walkover because it does not count as a win. Why would Serena give Stosur the satisfaction of beating her when she is clearly exhausted? Serena made a smart choice she won a match and now she's off to party at the wedding!!!

She could at least put on some kind of show for them. She may go on to win more majors but she will never be in the category of a Navratilova or Evert or King or Court because she only gives an effort 10 times a year if that. It's easier to cherrypick "big" touranments when you don't play or give an effort at the ones in between. The real legends of the game played hurt, 30+ weeks a year, played majors at less than 100%, and didn't whine about it when they they weren't at their best, and still won in bunches--10+ times a year, repeatedly.

Those legends were also not playing the physical game Serena plays and the depth is a lot different.

Evert, Navratilova, Court, etc. all had byes until the semifinals in their slams. Now, every round is a battle. And again, this keeps Serena relevant. How is Wozniacki doing with all that playing? Jankovic? Today's tour is different. No point in drawing comparisons. There is a reason why Serena is still a force while Venus is fading, Kim is on the way out, and Justine is gone - AGAIN.

Exactly, the way they played is a completely different context to the way girls play now. You go out there in the first round, and you can easily get another girl willing and able to go give her all for three straight sets playing very physical tennis.
And a lot of this improvement in the tour is because of Serena in the first place.
Not to mention I'm pretty sure she's played the most matches so far this summer, except for maybe Radwanska. And compared to the other current top players, she also isn't getting that first round bye, which makes a big difference when you're constantly winning whole tournaments.

Besides, even though I adore watching Serena play, this tournament has almost all of the top 20 here, and I'm excited to see who comes out on top. I'm happy Serena will take some time off and be ready for the USO.

Some would have Serena live on a tennis court. That's never been her. Why would it be her at age 30 and in the condition she is in. She has put in work; give her a break.

Why didn't Serena just withdraw from Cincinnati right after Toronto? Everyone on this board knew that she would eventually, it was just a question of when. This way she has just pissed off a lot of fans. She's certainly entitled to a lot of leeway because she was seriously ill, but let's not pretend that she hasn't done this sort of thing her whole career. Serena needs much better PR advice.

The tourni orgs prolly knew it if we expected it ourselves and must be glad that she showed up for a match.

She will be well rested for the USO. :scared:

Also glad for Sam. How in hell can you be sure she would have beaten Serena when she managed to win 6 games few days ago. :help:

LOL. Serena, why even pretend? No one would be mad at her for pulling out of Cincy. Not buying the "injury". Enjoy the time off and kick butt in NY. :yeah:
Ryan, are you kidding, aren't you reading all the venom that's being spread about her. I think you've had a lapse in memory and forgot where you were posting.

ROFL No... but anyways whatever I say you will twist it into your favor... personally I didn't pay attention to half of what happened in Toronto once Nadal lost so keep talking.

if anyone else withdrew from a tournament to attend a celebrity wedding (we all know that's the real reason even though SW cited injury) they'd be taken to the woodshed here. SW does it and all we get is 'get well soon' or 'smart move so she can be fresh for US Open'. Why take up a spot in the draw when you know you're going to withdraw? :o

Because the WTA rules says she has too. If they wanna try to force players to play, then we can play these games, if you believe its a game.

Well it's not disappointing, she's not the most in-form otherwise she would have played the tournament... her attitude is regrettable... you don't participate in a tournament and pull off like this for inappropriate reasons (e.g a wedding)... that's rude for the WTA, for the game and your opponent who had the win probably in the pocket ; Sammy Stosur would have defeated her fair and square, she obviously doesn't want that.

LOL. Stosur just lost in straights of a big tournament final. How stupid do you look telling us she had Serena in the bag 3 days later? You guys really are funny.

Serena´s main mission, that she has accomplished admirably during this US Open series, was to get enough rankings points and matches so that she could a) get a US Open seeding and say goodbye to that embarrassing ITF ranking and b) get enough matches so she has some momentum for the US. She really doesn´t need this Cincy title and if she was a bit injured, it would not be worth carrying on and risking the US. So now she can enjoy the Kardashian wedding, well unless some other bizarre incident afflicts her; avoid the bouquet throwing Ms Williams, it will probably end up causing an eye injury, and no dancing in heels, you´ve already injured yourself once that way!!!

I don't know. Maybe it's expected from Serena. So instead of getting upset, many of her fan rather chair her on and tell her to have a blast

blah blah blah...your life was just sooo miserable with Serena winning Stanford and Toronto, slapping Masha and Vika around like they were some kind of amateurs..

Serena didn't slap nobody, I fail to see how 6-3 6-3 is a beat-down - perhaps you were saying that when the opponent didn't give her all and Serena took advantage.

Serena winning Stanford or Toronto doesn't really affect me... Toronto was a complete mess after Nadal's elimination and Stanford is an MM in the Premier's hiearchy.

Serena could be beating everyone and still fail to win the US Open then her comeback on the regular tour, efforts... would be absolutely useless without the NY crown.

So an obviously tired Serena with an aggravated injury should just show up and play anyway?:lol::lol:

Yes, do you have an issue with that ? The injury thing is to accomplish for the paper works of the WTA - she committed to the tournament in first place and should have fulfilled her commitment by taking the deserved defeat to Sammy Stosur.

I don't understand why she did not pull out before the tournie started.
I back her playing though.I guess she must have really wanted to give it a try.
More fool the tour for putting 2 premier 5 tournies back to back. Why would you do that if you wanted the strongest possible field for the second one?
WTA scheduling makes no sense. No wonder the tour is such a mess.

WTA scheduling makes no sense. No wonder the tour is such a mess.I keep reading this type of post with the same type of reasoning, from posters and maybe I missed an article on this, so I have to ask...

Was there a report on WHEN Serena aggravated her foot injury?

It's highly likely that she did it during her first match in Cincinnati.
Even IF she had aggravated it Toronto, there still may not have been enough time in between the two tourneys to ensure her health (because she DOES have to consult with health professionals/doctors and trainers), and then contact Cincinnati officials.
If that's the case, why blame her for something that she has no control over?
Moreover, why blame her when you don't have all the facts?

Again, is report or an article that I missed that details when, how, and where, the foot injury was aggravated?
