I seriously don't see anyone beating a fully fit and commited Serena. However, she's the player I fear the most, alongside Kuznetsova. They always play TOUGH against her.

She's sort of right. Na has given Serena a tough fight in every single one of their matches. Half of their matches have gone to a third set, and there have been 5 tie breakers in 6 matches played. She pushed Serena to the limits at the AO last year, and showed an impressive fight at Wimbledon despite the mini choke she suffered.

Now that Na is a grand slam champion it makes it even more interesting. The only draw back is that she seems to currently be in her USO series slump.

Having said that, she is not the only player able to challenge Serena in 2 weeks.

Li has the game...but does she have the head. Winning period but esp. winning a slam comes with expectations...so far she doesn't seem to be able to manage the expectations...but alas we will see.

she is right, lets look at all the so called contenders/possibilities:

caro wont challenge a healthy serena

kvitova is way to eratic

maria will fold like a cheap tent

venus and kim will both be to rusty if they even play

vera and sveta will go down early

sam isnt a threat to serena at slams except at the french

sabine is to erratic and her serve is deserting her lately

andrea is a headcase

marion would have to replicate that wimbledon performance and i dont know that she can

that leaves li as the only one in her way and, qith the confidence nana should have right now, if she gets her form back she is the legitamte biggest threat to serena at the US

the only other ones id consider might be nadia, she's beaten serena the last 2 times they met but she's never beaten her at a slam before. And maybe, MAYBE vika

Before Li Na played this match today, you could have said the same thing you saying about Kvitova and others.
Both Li and Kvitova did not played well in their first matches. Na Li is playing better, but this is just one player.

I was actually able to submit my correction for the pronunciation of "Peng Shuai" once to a team of livestream commentators, they even read it on air, and then they proceeded to continue saying it wrong.

BluSthil
Aug 16th, 2011, 11:08 PM
I disagree with Mr. Sam Smith. Other than Li Na, Kvitova, Bartoli & Clijsters have a decent chance to beat Serena. Clijsters is the least likely because of her injury problems and lack of match play. Kvitova needs a steady nerve and faith that she can hang with Serena. Bartoli needs to stay focused and go for her shots. She has beaten Serena before, so the 'celebrity' wow factor should not play a big factor in the outcome.

It does, however, come down to 'Heart & Soul', steady nerves, and a warrior spirit; and right now, no one can equal Serena...

Actually I think she's right.

I don't get it why you're angry at her again - she's making quite interesting statements, she was the only one of the EXPERTS that pick Kvitova as the favourite for Wimbledon, she's taking eye on others than the STARS. I prefer her to any other tennis commentators.

I agree, and this isn't just a lackluster Serena. She can challenge an OK Serena.

SerenaSlam
Aug 16th, 2011, 11:51 PM
I think she is basing it off of results. Clearly na has the best results of 2011. Her statement has sense to it but at the same time this is tennis. Let them be on opposite sides of the net and their game answer her statement.

Rome
Aug 17th, 2011, 12:56 AM
if there is going to be anyone giving Serena the fits in a slam it not going to be Li NA. I do so kim giving her trouble if not beating and inform Serena it's the only player that i see that can. I have a feeling Kim is pulling one of her Serena moments where she is playing injuried but come slam time she will be ready.

Ok i take that back Li Na can give Serena the fits but she can't even beat Serve rena.

mauresmofan
Aug 17th, 2011, 01:56 AM
Lets see who can realistically compete with Serena in this form - Li Na ok not the first person that'd spring to mind, Venus yes she's done sweet f.a for a long time but maybe, Caro I'm sure could trouble her for a while until Serena has had enough and starts blasting away, Kvitova could certainly do lots of damage but can she keep the ball in long enough? I do think out of them all it has to be Kvitova but Serena is in ominous form.

justineheninfan
Aug 17th, 2011, 05:42 AM
I dont think it is that crazy a statement. Li Na always gives Serena a tough match. All those matches were before Li Na became a Grand Slam Champion or even Grand Slam finalist too. Of all the players she is one of the most likely to challenge the heavy favorite Serena right now.

challenge doesn't mean she can beat her, just she can keep up with her up to a point

Clijsters hasn't played, she trashed Atarenka and Sharapova, Kvitova is underperforming on hardcourts ... who is left

Based on recent form, no way. That is why this statement seems absolutely absurd.

However, should Na find her form from the AO and the French then beating Serena could be in reach. Any of the other horrific form Na has produced this year, then no chance.
