I've never lost in first round of a slam in my still young career, but I guess I will be as hopeless as the player I picked for "Pick your draw" :haha:

Current world number 2 in singles, with big chances to became number one again

Name: Xiaomei
Age: 25
Country: China
Favorite Player: Martina Hingis, Li Na

When did you start playing? Talk a little about your TT career...

First, I want to say I am the former hotel. In 2007, MY friend vianzfzf told me that TT is an interesting game, so I chose Amelia Island for my beginning. Luckily, after playing 5 tournaments, I have won 2 titles, Charleston and Berlin. So, from Istanbul, I didn't need to play qualification. Now I have got 10 singles titles. For singles, I only need an Olympics champion. It's a really difficult thing, so I will try my best in London.
For doubles, I only remember I won a GS in RG with my partner leoneo. My 1st title was in Istanbul with fencer in 2007.

What has been your best moment/carrer highlight in TT? Singles and Doubles?

From 2008 to now, 90% of the time in top 10 in singles. For doubles, leoneo and I have also got NO.1 team forever, winning Australian Open was exciting. And my 1st title in singles made me very happy. For doubles, I think winning in RG

How would you rate your season so far?

Great in singles, I have won in Australian Open and Eastbourne. But doubles is just so so.

What are your expectations for this year's Open? Singles and Doubles

Singles:2nd round(recently I always lost in 1st round)
doubles:I'm looking forward to winning as much as possible

Coming as the world number 2 do you feel extra pressure?

In 2007, I had no pressure. But now, I have much more pressure. Because there are many players doing better in now.

How do you feel about the prospect of being number 1 again after the Open?

I have been No.1 before, so if I get No.1, I am also very excited. If not, it doesn't matter. Because Benny is really a great player.

What are your goals for the rest of the year?

Hope to win in China Open.= =

Who do you think are the favourites for the singles and doubles titles?

Singles: sdtoot(shaun), he is a kind-hearted person.:) ; Rui, my favourite friend in here.
Doubles: Chris84 and his partner, being No.1 for a lot of time before.

Who are your biggest rivals on TT?

Now first is Benny, all the Top20 and many chinese.

Whose player(s) you hate to face?

Certainly all the chinese.
And Rui, Benny, Michi, James, Shaun, Tomek, etc.

Do you think the TT ranks represent the reality of TT?

Certainly yes!

What's your favorite tournament?

China Open, French Open, Bali.

Why did you choose jasonchou as your partner?

Leoneo is very busy with his work, and Jasonchou also needed a new partner. So we play together, hope we can do well in US.

Interview with Dave B

http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt291/Nomercy_21/TT%20US%20Open%202011/Dave-Binterview.jpg

Part of USA highest ranked doubles team

Name: Dave (hence the screen name). I’m more real than anyone on the TT tour.
Age: 28
Country: USA
Favorite Player: Jelena Jankovic

When did you start playing? Talk a little about your TT career...

I started playing in April of 2009. I moved away from New York City a few months prior, and it was a great, fun way, for me and my former college roommate (Rob, aka FaceyFacem) to keep up even though he was still in New York.

Rob is a nice straight guy (and recently engaged! CONGRATS! THE RING IS AWESOME!), so obviously he likes sports. I am a fun, bitchy gay man so obviously I love women’s tennis. TT was a natural fit.

What has been your best moment/carrer highlight in TT? Singles and Doubles?

The obvious answer would be the French Open final, but actually it was when we were paying an ITF (Dothan). Results weren’t being posted online, so Rob actually CALLED the tournament! They answered, and he posted a few match results! It was hilarious, but I let him know immediately to never expect someone as important as me to do a clerical task like that.

In terms of wins, there is not really one moment for me. What I remember about TT is crawling our way up the doubles rankings, playing ITFs, and spending hours researching the history of journeywoman who would die for Craybas’ career while on a never ending conference call at work. It’s the process—the incremental rakings climbs and endless discussions with Rob—that I remember most fondly.

How would you rate your season so far?

On a scale of one to ten, I’d give it a “hell yes!” I also loved the clothes I have worn this year on tour. Some of the other players have tried, but you can’t expect to be at my level shopping at H&M.

What are your expectations for this year's Open? Singles and Doubles

I expect to lose second round in singles, to make the second week in doubles, and to cause some harmless drama.

Coming as the USA big hope for the doubles title do you feel extra pressure?

Pressure? I thrive in the spotlight! I love the attention, and I use it to intimidate others.

What are your goals for the rest of the year?

I want to make the Year End Championships in doubles and to make out with at least one other TT player. And I don’t do minors, so if you are of age it is probably you I am after.

Who do you think are the favourites for the singles and doubles titles?

For the singles title, Rob is the favorite. Why is this even a question? He has the momentum, and is the sexiest player in the draw. I believe looks correlate with expectations, in which case In The Zone is the number two. Going by looks in doubles, we are obviously the doubles favorites, although I hear Michael is also very good looking.

Who are your biggest rivals on TT?

Sexysova and Tiff! THEY MUST LOSE!

Excuse me, I got carried away. I hear they are nice people, and the rivalry helps us both grow as….ok, I’ll cut the crap, the only reason I want them to do well is so that we can play them again and win.

We were breaking in to the top 100, top 50 at the same time, played a ton, and then they launched ahead of us. We beat them a number of times, so I knew we were good enough to go up the rankings too. Now that we have, we are playing them again on a bigger stage, and we just beat them last week. :)

Whose player(s) you hate to face?

I hate playing Michael! He always charms me with his looks. It’s very distracting

Do you think the TT ranks represent the reality of TT?

No, because there are no quality points. Quality points are the shit. I have no idea why the WTA got rid of them. If you are ever in Philly and want to get drunk talking about how amazing quality points were all night, I’m buying.

What's your favorite tournament?

My favorite tournament is the one paying me an appearance fee that week.

Why did you choose FaceyFacem as your partner?

I already said I started playing because Rob is my former college roommate! Who is this scrub reporter that came in late and did not hear the beginning? I DO NOT have time for this! I am DAVE B! Screw it, I’m out of here.

Interview with FaceyFacem

http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt291/Nomercy_21/TT%20US%20Open%202011/FaceyFaceminterview.jpg

Part of USA highest ranked doubles team

Name: Rob
Country: USA
Age: 27
Favourite player: Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic, Flavia Pennetta, all-time favorite Arantxa Ssnchez-Vicario

When did you start playing? Talk a little about your TT career...

I started playing in April 2009 at Barcelona playing qualies. I definitely consider myself a doubles specialist and focus on winning doubles titles with Dave B.

We qualified for a few events in doubles and made a solid run at the Dothan Challenger in doubles. Then we qualified and won Strasbourg in just our second month in TT.

We made our top 100 debut shortly afterwards, and our top 50 debut in March of this year. Our big rankings jump was following our French Open final this year and we're currently at our career high ranks having made our top 10 debut earlier this month.

What has been your best moment/carrer highlight in TT? Singles and Doubles?

In singles was winning New Haven this week! My first career tour title. In doubles, definitely the French final - we battled our way there - and our Cincy title which has helped us make our top 10 debut.

How would you rate your season so far?

Our season has been good but not great. We blew our lead in the French final and were 0 for 4 in our first 4 finals this year, and we were fairly weak in our grass court results and lost early in Australia. We finally converted a final in Cincinnati and are looking forward to keeping up our hard court form in the US Open!

What are your expectations for this year's Open? Singles and Doubles

For singles, I'm hoping to match Wozniacki. I had a similar US Open Series - poor results until New Haven. But hoping to ride the momentum in New York.

For doubles, we're looking to at least improve our low countable result on our ranking, but have high expectations. However, we take things one match at a time and one tip at a time.

Coming as the USA big hope for the doubles title do you feel extra pressure?

I feel a lot of pride representing the US team, and am hopeful that our performance this summer and at the US Open will help our chances to be selected for the Fed Cup team. We are counting on lots of support.

What are your goals for the rest of the year?

For singles, I'd love to qualify for Bali, but know I will need some strong results and, of course, an international series title.

For doubles, our goal is to qualify for Istanbul. We believe that after our Cincinnati final and semifinal in New Haven we should be #1 in the race and in good position to qualify. We're hopeful to keep improving our ranking, of course, but we're looking to Istanbul first.

Who do you think are the favourites for the singles and doubles titles?

I think for singles, you can't count out the veteran players, even those who are lower ranked. But I think Bennyko, who we've been facing in doubles quite often, could be tough, especially as he's trying to cling to #1.

For doubles, it has to be us, right?! Bennyko and Michael! took us our twice this summer so we'd prefer to avoid them in the draw, but definitely Benny/Michael, us and Drake and Jean have to be the top threats.

Who are your biggest rivals on TT?

This summer it's been Bennyko and Michael and Drake and Jean as we jockey for titles and for ranking position.

Our historical rivals, though, are joe and nycpsu and sexysova and tiffanykatya, who we battled for awhile in the mid-level ranks to see who would first break through. It was really hard on us when they each moved up quickly and it took us so long to catch up, but we've almost made it!

Whose player(s) you hate to face?

Hate facing players like SVK who make the random picks. I like to have a good sense of what diffs I'll have before differences even come out.

Do you think the TT ranks represent the reality of TT?

Somewhat, but it's an imperfect system. There are some strong teams who win a lot of matches at the lower levels and just can't move up the rankings because they are in only challengers and international level events. Those matches can be even harder than matches in big tournaments when you have to tip some lower, lesser known players.

Also, winning titles is so big in TT. You can't get to #1 just by winning a few matches each week, you need to be making lots of finals.

What's your favorite tournament?

As a fan, I've always loved the Australian and French the most, and of the non-majors, I love Rome.

For TT, Strasbourg will always be special, but we'll probably play Brussels in the future for the ranking points ;)

Why did you choose Dave B as your partner?

Dave and I were college roommates for 2 of our years, and of course very good friends for all 4. He was starting to get into tennis when we met and I helped him get very into it. He joined Tennis Forum (then WTAworld) first and got me involved. He was a former PAW player but then stopped playing when his schedule got busy. When he moved from New York, I suggested we play a game together to keep in touch and TT Doubles made a lot of sense, especially since we both like ranking systems and this had one of the most complex and similar to the tour ranking procedures.

We've kept it up ever since.

Yep that's true. But there is like half the people sending with K. and V. and the other half not sending. I have it on the OOP with the K. and V.. And also it shouldn't have space between it "K.Bondarenko and not K. Bondarenko" :p

Little differences but still it gives error. :o

True. I know what you mean.

When you have 128 players also then that will be a pain in the ass to fix. Just make it easier for you and ask for the first name initsial when both sisters are playing, otherwise you cause a bigger confusion for everyone. There are always a group of players who follow the OOP to a T and then there are the rest who don't understand what last name only means :p That could be because of language issue, but if you play long enough, it should become more clear.

One thing I hate though is when a player has 2 last names and in the picks people send only 1 :fiery:

I did write those things on the OOP for something and still 80% of the people send picks in wrong format :o Please people just READ EVERYTHING that is in the OOP.

There is no problem because everyone accepts that's the rule. People here on WTAW need to do the same. There will never be everyone who is happy about a retirement. If someone retires at 3-0, one could argue the person was injured before the match even began - no one could know. And what if someone rolls their ankle? Is that fair that they now withdrew? Should you lose because of that? There is an argument for and against the retirement rule. If people only accepted it the way they do on MTF, there would be no problems here either. Instead, the grass is always greener on the other side .....

That´s true, it´s like with betting, some companies counts retirement, some don´t and people must accept it...still, I think if a player wins, I want to get a point for that...injuries are simply a part of the game:shrug: Walkover is different situation of course, if a player don´t decide to play then this match never happnened (W/O also doesn´t count for H2H I think...)

See, and others could say that retirements are freak and not fair. Should someone really be penalized for Azarenka and Bartoli traveling the world to avoid being fined? It can go both ways. Should the people who picked Doi really be penalized because she rolled her ankle (or whatever her problem was)?

We've left the rule open to debate and polled it for the past two years. It has not been winning. It's not like an unfavorable rule is being forced. Like usual, the rule can be discussed at year's end.

Simply put there is nothing more to say than ITZ's post, however. :worship:

Would that be fair in that infamous Kremer vs Woz match or few of Azarenka's clay matches?

It wouldn't be.

Yes it would...if I would pick Kremer I simply want to have a point for that...I picked Kremer, Kremer won...isn´t this game about picking winners? It´s not my fault and not my problem that Wozniacki decided to retired in such situation, my opponent would advance in the next round despite having less winners picked... But as ITZ said if the majority want to have this I think this whining is for nothing...But I think this topic should be opened in the end of the year again...

Correct, I just never gets discussed at all on MTF in both TT and also PAW. After one point is played the match counts, simple........no arguements whatsoever!!

What we do forget though is that the number of retirements in ATP matches is significantly less than WTA.

Tomek, your post is just plain rude. Firstly, I did not even express an opinion on the retirement rule in my post. Secondly, everyone is entitled to its own opinion on all the rules [which in my case just happens to be the current rule].

If you feel like having any more discussions, please go to the TT subforum.

What we do forget though is that the number of retirements in ATP matches is significantly less than WTA.

my preference was always that retirements should not count, or failing that, that retirements should always count. however, the vast majority of people decided on the rule we have, so whilst i might not agree with it, i think it is necessary to accept the majority decision. it isn't like the rule puts anyone at a disadvantage

Meelis: In the poll the retirement rule was not explained correctly. Writing "Yes - where the non-retiring player is leading by at least a set " means that the Pous-Tio should count

"at least" means that they are a set up at worst. pous-tio wasn't a set up. they were level on sets. there is no ambiguity here.

feel free to disagree with the rule, but the way it is written is not in any way confusing.

Playing diplomat here - isnt the best thing to have a new vote at the next opportunity?

we'll have another vote at the end of the season. i'd be surprised if the majority opinion has changed dramatically though. bottom line is that there will always be "unfair" results regardless of what we do with retirements.

Don´t want to start another fight or so, just want to react there.
Injuries and retirements are simply part of tennis and certain match, losing because of this is very unlucky thing sure, but never unfair, if a player decided to play it...Even if a tennis match ends with retirement, someone wins, it´s never tied, so I don´t know why people picking different winners should get the same points...But yes, we need to wait for an off seasson...

Btw, instead of talking about a retirement rule we should just talk about one when people don't send picks in the correct format don't get their picks counted.

It's 5 more second to you and 30 more minutes for us. ;)

I dont have too much management experience, but the first I learnt is that most people send back the same format as the OOP. So if You include first names in OOP dont be surprised.

First names aren´t the main problem, in Wimbledon I posted OOP even without TB and SR and just with last names at some days, just coloured different and written what colour is what in description and people then asked for it and still send picks in a wrong format...it´s OK when you have small OOP but when it´s such big, it´s not good to repair every single SR...

Exactly.
Managers include the first names, so it's easier for players to recognize them. Also because if you have an uknown plaer (ITF's especially) then if you do your check-up on the player, atleast you know who you looking at.

It is still players responsibility to respect the guidelines of the manager, to send the correct picks, because it it a nightmare fixing people's picks.

Oh Kylger :p

You forgot to send your picks to me :p

I dont have too much management experience, but the first I learnt is that most people send back the same format as the OOP. So if You include first names in OOP dont be surprised.

This needs to be quoted everytime a manager complains about receiving the wrong format.:worship:

No it doesn't. Most of the time we get complaints if we don't post the first names. Also the first names aren't the only thing we write in the OOP. We also write the format in which we want the picks to be sent in. :wavey:

It doesn't matter what you guys in theory think is the right think to do, valac just said the obvious. If the OOP consists of last names ONLY, you're very unlikely to get a full name in return.

And there's way more complaints from the managers than from the users, that's clear.

Like Kylger and SVK said the problem isn't really sending full names. Today everyone sent me only last names and I must say most of the picks were in correct format. ;) And like Kylger said too, it's less confusing for the players to have the full name there as there are several players with same last name.

So you add the first letter of their first names - just as you expect from the players to do. Or do you think that V. Williams and S. Williams is too confusing?

There are two main problems generally , first names and TB matches. And to be honest when I see Player A vs. Player B SR1 TB1 I am confused what is the correct format Player A 2-0 6-4 6-4 or Player A 6-4 6-4. (If the second then no need to put SR1).

We put SR1 because first it is a SR and then it is TB1 aswell and because that's the normal thing everyone does.

And you just need to send the score since we can guess what is the SR from that.....

And what is the reason behind sending Garrigues or Medina as a last name?

It doesn't matter how you write the names, there are ALWAYS a select group of people who send however they want.

^^ Use just one of the surnames for Spanish players then?:p

But I must say when I played ITFs, and there were no first names in the OOP, it was sometimes very difficult to know which player is actually meant (sometimes there are more players with the same last name, although they might not play the ongoing tournament). (And yes, it's mainly bad because I'm lazy to look for the actual OOP, to know what player it is:p).

It is the same as retirement rule. No absolute proper solution. (There always be players asking for the first name and there always be managers who complain about first names)

Jani Réka Luca please tell me which is the family name. (I can tell You all three names are first names) Why should I know for a Spanish player which is which.

I don´t know how we started this debate about first names, but when managers are complaining about bad format, I believe they mean especially wrong scoring, some chinese posters do this, they copy the whole OOP and send it in a very messy format...copy and paste picks to the sheet and then fixing some spelling mistakes or so is the easiest thing, but fixing it cell to cell...

ALL Spanish and Portuguese players have 2 family names. That's because of tradition. In Spain you get your fathers last name and your mothers first last name (which means grandfathers name).

Same applies in Portugal where you get mothers last name and fathers.

That's also applied in Greece, but Greek people only use 1 last name.

I have seen in the Men's game where...

1. There is an OOP which is posted with full name so you know who is really who.

2. There is also a sending pick list where only the name desired is posted with rules.

It will probably take the managers another minute to post that list to try to avoid possible errors, but it will probably save lots of time to try to correct errors.
