Banaszek To Face #2 Bowden
http://m-sharapova.org/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/normal_maria12%7E1.jpg
Banaszek in action against Cebolla.

Mason, OH -- Comeback kid Nadia Banaszek continued to gain momentum after she booked herself a spot in the second round of the FWTT event in Cincinnati. The Belarussian was forced to work for a 6/7(0) 7/6(5) 7/6(2) win over Rita Cebolla of Spain.

''Yeah, that was such a tough first round. You know, there wasn't much to separate us out there. It was just about who played the bigger points better, and I think I did that in the third breaker.''

It now sets up a mouth watering clash with world #2 Pamela Bowden of the Netherlands, the reigning French and Wimbledon champion.

''You know, this is what I came back for. To play against these top ranked girls, and see where my game is at. She's had an amazing year, you know, but I'm looking forward to it. I still believe I can compete and beat these girls, it's just about going out there and executing my game.''

Singles Results, Second Round

Yelena Pirilenko def. [1]Ziyi Zianzhi 5/7, 7/6(6), 7/6(5)
This closely fought battle had the #1 player fall again in the early rounds, this time to Yelena.

[14]Sabine Graf def. Lindsay Galbraith 7/6(4), 7/6(1)
Sabine is on a roll on the American hard courts and secures herself a place in the third round.

Samantha Soren def. [12]Giuseppina Benedetti 7/6(7), 3/6, 6/3
Sam is so consistent, it's no surprise she upset Giusa today.

[7]Sylvie Bailly def. Caroline Smith 7/6(3), 7/6(3)
Sylvie is back and playing very well and ends the hopes of the young American in a pair of tiebreakers.

Chantal Chan def. [6]Harper Johnson 2/6, 7/6(4), 6/3
Another American ends their hopes in Cincinnati with Chantal taking out Harper.

Elise Mesane def. Brenda Gaga-Maduga 6/4, 6/2

Yanet has ruled the challenger circuit but fell today to the Wimbledon finalist in a thriller.

[3]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. Elena Skankhova 7/5, 6/7(6), 7/6(7)
Ruflina faced down a huge test today and made it through against Elena to move on in Cincinnati.

[4]Nthamangela Mbangu def. Ella Felivitch 6/1, 0/6, 7/6(3)
Nthama's been so quiet lately on the court, she must be busy with her mothering duties but it still playing well.

Tami Lamy-Chappuis def. Regla Torres 6/4, 6/3
These two seem to square off so often, it's amazing they both play limited schedules. Tami gets the best of Regla today.

Jookkarae Mensarb def. Khunyah Nomyarn 6/3, 6/4
Khunyah couldn't follow up her epic upset over Jane and fell to her mentor, Jook.

Alexandra Anastadis def. [8]Siri Cornetsson 0/6, 6/2, 7/5
Siri's been playing a lot of tennis today and it was evident as she was tired by the end of this upset by Alexandra.

[5]Jennifer Casanova def. Daria Afanasyeva 7/6(4), 1/6, 6/2
Jennifer one the close first set, fell apart in the second, and then regrouped to please the American crowd in her win over Daria.

Anastasia Nemayeva def. [16]Cornelia du Preez 1/6, 7/5, 6/2
Coco almost had this one, but Anastasia was able to fight her way through and win.

[13]Athea Kane def. Vittoria Perez 6/2, 0/6, 7/5
Athea can be hit or miss lately and this match was evident of that as she barely eeked out a win over Vittoria.

Nadia Banaszek def. [2]Pamela Bowden 1/6, 6/4, 6/4
Nadia is finally back like we knew her and upset the hottest player on the tour, Pamela, in a come-from-behind win.

Walking on Sunshine
http://cdn.bleacherreport.com/images_root/image_pictures/0612/7009/121142_crop_340x234.jpg

Samantha Soren just keeps winning her early round encounters this summer. She continuted that trend today in Sunshine Yellow to match the blazing sun which was beating down on the competitors this afternoon.
She began her week in the 1st round Wednesday when she defeated Mia Henriksson in three sets, 7-6 4-6 6-3. The very next day on the same court she beat the tournament's 12th seed Giusa Benedetti in 3 sets with almost the exact same scoreline.
"Ya, it was eery when my coach told me that after the match. It's just the way the world works sometimes, both were sloppy matches by my part since I feel I could have won easier than I did in both matches. With Giusa today, I know she likes to fight and wasn't going to let me have it my way."
In doubles, Sorlenko finally won another doubles match by defeating Abid/Hernich in straight sets.
"We have been struggling, you just can't deny the crushing losses we have had. We are commited to playing the rest of 2011 and then we will evalutate what happened and what needs to happen moving forward"
Soren plays on the Grandstand tomorrow against a familiar foe in Sylvie Bailly.

Singles Results, Third Round

[14]Sabine Graf def. Yelena Pirilenko 6/3, 1/6, 6/3
Sabine has been on a roll this hard court season and is just racking the wins up.

Samantha Soren def. [7]Sylvie Bailly 7/6(3), 4/6, 6/4
Sam squared off against Sylvie and battled it out in another tense three setter in which Soren wins again.

Elise Mesane def. Chantal Chan 6/2, 7/6(4)
Elise is showing some sparks again and now has the crowd back on her side after a depressing six months. She is now in the quarterfinals.

[3]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu 7/6(2), 7/6(6)
Ruflina has had Cristina's number this year, and despite the Romanian's rising status, she couldn't break through today.

[4]Nthamangela Mbangu def. Tami Lamy-Chappuis 7/6(2), 1/6, 6/2
Nthama felt good about this win since she and Tami don't necessarily get along very well.

Alexandra Anastadis def. Jookkarae Mensarb 1/6, 7/5, 6/3
Alexandra is having a terrific event in Ohio and finds herself in the quarterfinals by defeating the rising Jook.

[5]Jennifer Casanova def. Anastasia Nemayeva 6/1, 0/6, 7/6(1)
Jennifer is the lone American left in the singles draw and keeps the crowd's hopes alive with this close win over Anastasia.

[13]Athea Kane def. Nadia Banaszek 6/1, 0/6, 7/6(2)
Nadia couldn't follow up yesterday's epic upset, but looks to be right on track even with this loss to Athea.

Doubles Results, Second Round

[1]Cornetsson/Johnson def. Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman 7/6(4), 6/1
A tough second round match for both teams but Harper and Siri are just too consistent these days.

Graf/Huubere def. [5]Wong/Zianzhi 2/6, 6/2, 7/6(1)
If Marteena and Sabine keep up their ways, they could possibly find themselves in the year end championship.

Bowden/Mbangu def. Nomyarn/A. Smith 7/5, 6/4
The junior team fell rather easily to Pamela and Nthama.

[4]Felivitch/Mesane def. Banaszek/Mori-Tu 7/6(6), 7/6(3)
Ella and Elise seem to be back and in contention for the aforementioned year end championships.

[3]Bartoli/Kartincova def. Afanasyeva/Im 7/6(3), 7/6(3)
Daria and Yoona couldn't close out the tiebreaks so they fell to Luna and Martine.

Anastadis/du Preez def. [7]McKrain/Skankhova 6/4, 4/6, 7/6(3)
Alexandra is having one good event and she pairs up with Coco and they make their way to the quarterfinals.

Pirilenko/Soren def. Wickmayer/Wojnarowska 7/5, 6/1
Yelena and Sam have fallen dramatically in the doubles rankings but look to be rebounding.

[2]Casanova/Taliamanosoko def. Gaga-Maduga/Mensarb 7/6(3), 3/6, 6/3
Jennifer and Ruflina have had a rough summer but were able to clinch a close win against the newly formed team of Jook and Brenda.

the weird thing my points strategy was sent based on possibly R2 v you rather than concentrating R1 pts v Brenda, and guess what? should I face you in the 2nd round, I would have beat you :p

In the sizzling hot summer of the American East, the Canadian from up North handled the conditions that she was given and won two matches.
First up she had to get onto the singles court to take on and then beat Sylvie Bailly 7-6 4-6 6-4. Then 3 hours later, Soren teamed up with her long time partner Yelena Pirilenko to take out Wickmayer/Wojnarowska in straight sets.
"It's amazing that we go out on the courts every day and try to win that very match and there after it's like it's the first one of the year. With that in mind I went out onto the courts with a, I guess calmness? and I think it showed with how I went about winning the matches. I know it's just going to get tougher tomorrow but I know I'm strong and I know I can beat anyone."
Samantha plays 12th seeded Sabine Graf in singles, while Pirilenko/Soren play the 2nd seeded pairing of Casanova/Taliamanosoko.

Singles Results, Quarterfinals

Samantha Soren def. [14]Sabine Graf 3/6, 6/4, 7/6(0)
Sam wins another close one and is progressively getting better as the hard court season moves on.

[3]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. Elise Mesane 7/6(4), 0/6, 6/1
These two titans have clashed so many times, that we've lost count. Ruflina wins this one.

Alexandra Anastadis def. [4]Nthamangela Mbangu 1/6, 6/2, 7/6(1)
Nthama's run comes to an end at the hands of the Greek youngster who is making a big splash in Cincinnati.

[13]Athea Kane def. [5]Jennifer Casanova 7/6(5), 7/6(1)
Athea has always had Jennifer's number for some reason and continues to be able to pull out close matches.

Alexandra is eliminated in doubles (along with partner Coco) by Luna and Martine.

Ranking update:

Ruffy will keep #3 given she had a 10-point lead on Nthama before the QFs

Samantha leapt from #20 to #15 with that QF win (loser Sabine is currently #14 and also gains places)

losers are Fleri, Coco and Yelena

In the race, there's 5 points between Athea & Samantha for place 8

In the doubles race, Luna/Martine goes 3rd again, though with 1988 points they're 1882 behind Siri/Harper in 1st...and just 400 ahead of Fleri/Kath in 11th.

[3]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. Samantha Soren 6/2, 3/6, 7/6(7)
Ruflina and Samantha have squared off a few times this summer with each coming away a winner at least once. In Cincinnati, this third set was so tight we had no idea who the winner was until Ruflina his a volley to secure her place in the finals.

Alexandra Anastadis def. [13]Athea Kane 1/6, 6/2, 7/5

Ruflina Taliamanosoko was once again just a bit too good for Samantha Soren today in Cincy as she prevailed in a 3rd set tie-breaker.
This match was filled with unforced errors from both players in every game of the match. Ruflina would make a forehand error then Soren would dump a backhand into the net. It made for dramatic tennis at times. Most didn't know who would win, others just wanted the match to finish. It went on for just under 3 hours in the late afternoon.
Samantha showed her frustration in the post match interview with this one line.
"If only I had a backhand...."
