Lets all get behind the coolest Russian player of them all.

All the best Nastya in Bali just go out there and crack the ball.

I also hope all your injuries/illnesses are behind you.

Nastya needs another 100 points from the remaining tournaments on her schedule to get into the AUS Open maindraw as the Zurich points will come off in 2 weeks time.

Nastya's 2002 season will all depend on this whether she has to play qualies , if so its Gold Coast.
An auto place in Melbourne would mean starting off in Gold Coast then Canberra.

All the best Anastasia for remainder of 2001

Good luck Anastasya

When she feels like playing she is simply great , at other times she can get you annoyed.

But she is still great , a very nice girl as well which makes her even better

Waiting for the draws from Bali to come out , she should be one of the top seeds in qualifying.

Change on plan for Anastasia .... she's in Leipzig qualies .

so that means that she must have got a WC into Moscow (qualies i think) .

Bali and Tokyo were going to be on her schedule if she didn't get a WC in Moscow.

All the best against Lydia Steinbach , its 1st meeting.

Go Nastya go !!!!!!

Eggy my lad, how did you come up with the "amazing athletic Anastassia Myskina"? Stylish? Yes! Lovely? Yes! Amazingly athletic? Nyet! Ana is too skinny to be an amazing athlete. She is a lovely player and a sweet girl. Let's just hope she can stay healthy in 2002. I'm sure we can all agree on that.

TheBoiledEgg
Sep 22nd, 2001, 04:12 PM
cat ..... she's is one of the best movers on tour and one of the fastest. Being Skinny has nothing to do with it ... lots of runners are far skinnier.

She simply oozes class.

Sep 22nd, 2001, 05:45 PM
I agree with you both in a sense.. She is fast on court, but for me it rather looked like a very quick mind rather than very fast body. In her match against Mauresmo, Amelie simply could not get ball pass Nastya. And for me it looked like 70% anticipation and 30% of speed. Very much Hingis-like ability to read the shots, maybe even better..

I thnik he ( Wertheim ) is wrong, even though she has everything for that. From what I've seen of her, she doesn't have a Champion's mind. She doesn't seem to have a will to suffer to become great. Out of all current Russian players, I think Anna K. and Elena D. can be solid Top 10 players. Nastya?
Of course she *can* occasionally break into Top 20, less talented players did that. But I can't see her a Top 20 resident, if that's what Wertheim means.

Anastasia's Dubai Draw:

(1)Venus Williams (USA) vs. BYE
WC-Selima Sfar (TUN) vs. Anna Kournikova (RUS)
Qualifier vs. Petra Mandula (HUN)
Anastasia Myskina vs. (8)Henrieta Nagyova (SVK)

Can Anastasia beat Henrieta? That one will be interesting; I'd love to see that match. Then if she does win, she gets Qualifier or Mandula, so that round is okay, IF she gets there.

After that - a brick wall! OUCH! :o

Cool!

I didn't know there was a thread created for the beautiful and amazing, Anastasia :D

I remember the first time I ever heard of Nastya, was at the Kremlin Cup last year when she defeated Anna Kournikova. I was so impressed with everything about her. Her game is amazing, and I know that she will definetly be moving up the rankings this year.

I was so happy that I got to see her live this year at Indian Wells tournament. Watched her match against Nathalie Dechy. I was probably one of the few cheering for her, since most were on Nathalie's side. Maybe most hadn't heard her. She ended up winning that match and later on I saw her and told her great match and she was so nice and signed my tennis ball. She's definetly a favorite of mine :)

Oh Stassy! You know you cannot start out slow against V!

ys

Quite expected result, our expectation were pretty low anyway, and Nastya didn't meet them. What "breakthrough" are you talking about, Janie? Winning another Palermo?

TS
Apr 12th, 2002, 06:53 AM
Another tough loss...had she beaten her in that tiebreak..who knows?...

Dont be so jaded ys...she'll come good :) She has hardly anything to defend til June I think so the top 20 is definately attainable with some more solid results. Im sure thats the kind of breakthrough janie was referring to :)

At the moment she is one of the most positive things in Russian tennis.

ys
Apr 12th, 2002, 07:15 AM
man, Panova might be Top 20 in several weeks. And that would be a breakthrough? That would be a great accomplishment for Panova, much exceeding her career expectations. Yet, with all due respect, not a breakthrough. Breakthrough is getting to another level. For last two years only three players qualified as having made a real breakthrough, and that's Henin, Clijsters and Dokic. Not Shaugnessy, not Farina, not Testud and of course, not Hantuchova. These four, as well as most of Russian players remain third-tier players of WTA Tour.

Ana is playing well. But she loses too many close matches. And she needs to occasionaly beat a top player. Ana may turn out to be better than Kournikova or Dementieva. Only time will tell.

I hope Ana has great self esteem. That will help her on court confidence. But she seems like the shy type. Udachi Ana!

"Williams battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the tie-breaker and got a break at 5-5 when Myskina netted a volley with Williams out of position after running to hit a return. Williams earned the win on the next point when Myskina sent a forehand wide. "

Doesn't it sound all that familiar? Mini-chokes is what we are good at. But it doesn't sound right. That was Williams who served at 5:5..

``I felt I played well tonight, and I felt she played well also,'' said Williams

And that could sound as a consolation for those willing to find one..

ys
Apr 12th, 2002, 05:43 PM
Not really, Fresh. WHat is indicative here is that Wiliams suggests that she HERSELF played well. Normally, after having such a relatively close match against low-ranked opponent you would expect to hear from her something like :"I am glad I survived this match playing as bad as I played today"..

TheBoiledEgg

Anastasia is an awesome and magnificent player. She is definitely going to make it to the top 10.

Got to watch her three matches at Amelia and she is now one of my very favorites. Her power, strategy, and finesse is beautiful to watch. In her first match, she kept speaking in Russian (is this correct name for the language?) if she made a good shot or a mistake. One time, she made a super shot, looked directly at us (this was a very small group of bleachers), and said about two sentences in Russian and we didn't know what to do 'cause we were shocked that she had looked directly at us and spoke and of course, we didn't know what she said. Everybody thought she was adorable.

In her Stevenson match, it started out slow for her but I told the people around me that she was going to win this match even after the first set was lost. I think her coach and I were the only ones rooting for her but she won and afterwards, I went to the player exit and was about to ask her to sign my book when a lady asked her if she would be in a picture with her daughter. She stood right next to her and got the picture. Then, I had my chance to ask her for her autograph and she was so sweet and signed for me. When I told her "congratulations", she said, "thank you" and seemed very shy and also stunned that someone was happy for her.

In the Venus match, I yelled her name throughout the match and she did get a following really big in this match. She showed that she is a great player and that Venus couldn't push her around. She was so close to winning the match!! Venus said that it felt like she was playing the number one player and I yelled, "you were!" The next day, she was standing between the stands for the Dementieva match and Likhovtseva match and I raised my thumb up for "great match" and also waved and she smiled and mouthed "thank you". I was really impressed with her sweet personality and the crowds loved her for talking to herself on the court in Russian. She has a new list of fans.

Anastasia, good luck at Charleston. :D

I wasn't here to congratulate Anastasia on that great win (two tiebreaks!! ), so it's great to come here and see that a lot of other people have been here to do it! :D :D :D

Irish, a fan of Anastasia's at CNNSI thanked me for posting your comments on Stassy's Amelia Island matches -- just wanted to pass that on to you.

Good luck today, NASTYA! BE VERY NASTY!!!!!! Don't let Clarisa even THINK she has a chance ...

CONGRATS ANASTASIA!!! :bounce:

Stassy is getting experience with EVERY kind of win this week -- an easy win; a two-tiebreaks win; a come-from-behind 3-setter! And it all goes into her experience-bank, to draw on as needed in future matches. :D
And she may need it all in the next round ....

Irish, Eggy has the right link to the CNNSI message boards (of course:) !!) , but I posted your match reports on WTA General Discussion rather than in the Rising New Stars zone, hoping for a wider audience to learn about my fave Russian player. It's a ways back, now, I'm afraid!! Maybe around 200 posts back.

Natsya is really getting more experienced and she's now getting used to many tight situations and thus she will mature a lot as a player.

Best of luck against Jennifer!

Udachi Ana! get that first big win against Capriati. But Capriati will be ready for her this time. And when you look at Jennifer's huge arms, and then look at Ana's skinny arms, you think Capriati will just crush her. Yikes! But I hope Ana can move her around and frustrate Jennifer. That's her only chance.

When I saw the score was 0-6, 0-3 , I was really cringing!! Would Nastya never win a single game??

But somehow, she suddenly recovered in an admirable way to make it tough for Jen to the very end.

This was another good learning experience for Stassy, because now she can see exactly how a champion reacts to being pushed to three sets by an upstart -- by coming out firing on all cylinders from the first minute, the next time they meet. Anastasia must have been wondering what hit her!
But she hung in there and started to make inroads .... too late, this time, unfortunately! :(
But it all goes into the experience-bank -- you will see, all this will all pay off before too long. You can bank on it. :)

Irish
Apr 20th, 2002, 03:25 AM
Thanks Janie. You would make a good psychiatrist. Needed a pick-me-up. I came in from laying out in the sun and it was 6-0 3-1. It hadn't started when I went out and then came in not too much later and saw those scores.
Like you say, I believe she will learn from this. She almost pulled off a three setter.

TheBoiledEgg
Apr 20th, 2002, 04:37 AM
Nastya just needed to win a game earlier on as she's very streaky.
Almost got it to level terms but she'll learn from this.

The article:
We hear about all the Russian women in the top 100. Who do you think has the real stuff to be a champion?
—T.J., New York

Honestly, I'm not sure any have real "champion" potential. Still, the vote here goes to Anastasia Myskina. Lots of natural talent, she plays with flair, and she's a little nuts on the court, which, of course, we mean in the best way possible. Coming off an injury, she seems to be getting her groove back as well. Anna Kournikova is in a bad way, having lost her fifth straight match last week, none to a top-20 opponent. Elena Dementieva gave Venus a good match in Key Biscayne, but like the Karma Chameleon of song, she tends to come and go, come and go. Elena Bovina is falling like AOL's stock price. Tatiana Panova is easy to root for, but any player who's a bad haircut away from standing under 5-foot tall is going to have to fight for every win.

Cool! :D:D:D

Right now, Myskina is the best of the Russian ladies! It's possible she will be the #1 ranked Russian female tennis player by the end of the year.

But on the horizon are Maria Sharapova and Dinara Safina. These 2 girls will blow away the WTA Russian players in a couple of years. Take it to the bank!

What a strange draw for Nastya!

In first round, she can pull this off against Martina Sucha. Martina is no slouch but Barbara Schett beat her at Hamburg and Nastya had beaten Barbara last Fall. Nastya will have to stay focused and not underestimate Martina.

Second round...ugh....Sandrine Testud. Sandrine will be very tough but if Nastya can wear her out by running her all over the court like she did Venus, she will win this. I do worry about this matchup though.

If Nastya gets by Sandrine, her third round matchup could be Elena Dementieva, her fellow Russian, and I'm sure this match will have different loyalties among the fans. Don't know about their head-to-heads but Elena may win this. Nastya has to be very consistent.

Elena not winning over Barbara Rittner would also be a big factor. With Barbara in good form, she will give Nastya a very, very tough match. Don't know the extent of her injury but she had to pull out of doubles before the Schett/Hingis match.

Marlene Weingartner or the qualifier (wish I knew already who this will be) will be a tough match against Nastya but I don't think Marlene will get past Elena D. or Barb R. IF she does, Nastya will win.

Will see how all this goes to comment about the rest of the tourney.

Just my comments and opinion, not the rule.

Go Nastya!!!:D

I'm glad Ana won 6-2 7-5 rather than 6-2 6-2, because that would probably have meant that her opponent played really crap. But 6-2 7-5 means that she had a hard battle in the 2nd set and she didn't let pressure interfere with her game.
Hopefully it will stand her in good stead when she plays Testud.
