Hopman Cup Secures Kvitova and Berdych for 2012 Event

Written by: Global Chick on 5th August 2011

Hyundai Hopman Cup in Perth Australia has secured Petra Kvitova and Tomas Berdych for the event in 2012. Kvitova and Berdych will represent the Czech Republic at the Burswood Dome.

The Hopman Cup is the official mixed teams competition of the ITF. The tournament is played at the Burswood Dome in Perth, Western Australia and will start on 31 December 2011 and run through to 7 January 2012.

Kvitova is this year’s Wimbledon Champion causing an upset when she took out Maria Sharapova in the final. Kvitova is ranked number seven on the WTA Tour singles ranking.

Tomas Berdych is currently ranked number nine on the ATP World Tour rankings. He was the runner up at Wimbledon in 2010 when he lost to Rafael Nadal. Berdych has won five ATP Tour career singles titles.

The Hyundai Hopman Cup is one tournament the players love to visit. The event is run by former tennis legend Paul McNamee and his wife Leslie. McNamee said, “We are delighted to welcome the reigning Wimbledon Champion. Kvitova has got the world at her feet, and it is a real boost for the tournament that she is tarting her 2012 campaign in Perth. With two top ten players going into the prime of their tennis careers this team will be setting the bar high for the other teams.”

I think this Czech team is a clear hint at getting practice, wonder if there or at the GS beforehand they´ll get more top teams to play

Bernie will probably get the call for it this year. Although Sam probably won't play. And I really rather not see Jarmila or Jelena there. Hell, I'd take Ashley Barty right now.

Shame we missed out on Serena/John this year. That pairing needs to happen.

Laura's from Australia and she's definitely more popular.
Plus, Andy and her seem to be friends.

And although she was horrible last year, she probably deserved to win in 09 when Andy fucked that up for her. Girl wants her diamonds.

MacNamee is allegedly pursuing Roger Federer to play with Martina Hingis, after Roger had already declined an invitation earlier in the year. This time he wants a face-to-face meeting at the US Open with Fed, Mirka and his agents. LOL. It's a big stretch for MacNamee because he said it would depend on whether or not Hingis was prepared to go through the training and then have to be certified for drug-testing again before she can even compete. But if MacNamee can pull that off, he would truly be a miracle worker. He also claimed that Hingis was "dying to come back for one more Hopman Cup."

ChrisCologne

I would think that Robson dis-qualified herself from any invitation as she didn´t do anything spectacular and GB has some more opportunities for that mixed in Olympics 2012 with Anna+Elena, so I think both Andy+the federation hoped Robson would be top50 potential by the middle of next year when counting on her

I don´t see any benefit for the event to re-invite Murray with a nonsense partner

I believe the tournament would re-invite Lisicki after her deep run in Wimbledon and her possibile deep run in NY and her history at that tournament. The event always invited headliners and big names with some upcomers or legends, so I would assume that the Hopman Cup could ask Tommy Haas to play with Lisicki. Haas was keen on asking Sabine for the Olympics anyway

Del Potro together with Dulko could also be a factor

And let me add one final thought: If Hingis accepts a WC with Federer in this event, the Olympics are "safe". I was always sure Hingis would never play in London. But if playing Perth, I´d predict they´ll try. If not, I doubt Hingis will do it. Hingis would have to play up to 7-10 events untill Paris to get a solid doubles ranking as only the top10 in doubles get free invitation and the best 56 in singles plus wildcards, but what story to give that wildcards to legends and prevent the youth of the world from playing as the Olympics aren´t meant for professionals normally anyway - apart from the difficulties with the drug test anyway

Session 1 (France vs. China).
Li vs. Bartoli will be a solid match up. Also I wanna see Gasquet and how capable Wu Di is.

Session 3 (Czech Republic vs. Bulgaria)
Kvitova vs. Pironkova - Wimbledon QF match up should be a good match. Berdych vs. Dimitrov will also be very interesting.

Session 9 (Australia vs. China, France vs. Spain)
Probably out of the ones I'm interested in, the least appealing. But still worthwhile going to because it has 6 potential matches. Gajdosova and Li should be a decent enough match up, as well as Verdasco and Gasquet.

Session 10 (Czech vs. Denmark, USA vs. Bulgaria)
Kvitova vs. Wozniacki is the one I am most excited about. Hopefully it'll be good.

Depending on the final, I may go too.

This year, Hewitt has the distinction of being the highest-ranked Australian male player ever to accept an invitation to contest the Hopman Cup (No. 1 in 2002 and 2003) and also the lowest-ranked Australian male player ever to be accept an invitation (No. 198 at the time of commitment).

The lowest-ranked player ever to accept an invitation was Jelena Dokic in the 1999 event. She was ranked 638 on the WTA but was the ITF World No. 1 junior. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The lowest-ranked male player ever to accept an invitation was Yasufumi Yamamoto in the 1991 event. He was ranked 471. Correct me if I'm wrong.

With the signing of Caroline Wozniacki, the Hopman Cup has now had 24 World No. 1's compete in the tournament, though not all necessarily ranked No. 1 at the time of contesting the event.

The Women:

1. Steffi Graf (No. 1 in 1989)
2. Monica Seles
3. Arantxa Sanchez Vicario
4. Martina Hingis
5. Lindsay Davenport (No. 1 in 1999)
6. Serena Williams (No. 1 in 2003)
7. Ana Ivanovic
8. Jelena Jankovic
9. Dinara Safina
10. Caroline Wozniacki (No. 1 in 2012)
11. Amelie Mauresmo
12. Kim Clijsters
13. Justine Henin

The Men:

1. Mats Wilander
2. Thomas Muster
3. Boris Becker
4. Ivan Lendl
5. Roger Federer
6. Novak Djokovic
7. Lleyton Hewitt (No. 1 in 2002, 2003)
8. Marat Safin
9. Patrick Rafter
10. Carlos Moya
11. John McEnroe

Players that either wanted to play or accepted an invitation, only to withdraw due to injury or lack of a partner include:

Pete Sampras (invited to play in 1991 with Zina Garrison, but withdrew due to shin splints)
Jennifer Capriati (invited to play in 1994 with Richey Reneberg, but withdrew due to personal problems)
Anna Kournikova (wanted to play in 2000 but both Kafelnikov and Safin committed to Doha)
Venus Williams (invited to play in 2007 with Mardy Fish, but withdrew due to injury)
Andy Roddick (invited but never accepted, demanded appearance fee of 12 million)
Victoria Azarenka (invited to play in 2006 with Max Mirnyi, but she withdrew due to mix-up with scheduling)
Patty Schnyder (invited to play numerous times with Roger Federer, but declined to play tournaments in QLD)
Maria Sharapova (invited in 2008, but didn't want to play indoors and had committed to Hong Kong exhibition)
Gabriela Sabatini (invited to play in 1993/4 when Pepsi was main sponsor (Gaby was endorsed by Pepsi), declined)

When Hyundai took over as the main sponsor, they requested a Korean team. Hyung-Taik Lee and Yoon Jeong Cho both accepted an invitation but both withdrew due to injuries. LOL

How about staging a Legends Hopman Cup a week after the main event? Bring back some of the former stars of the tournament. It would probably be more interesting than the real thing. LOL. They only play one set of singles each and then pro-set of doubles.

Imagine (if you will):

CROATIA: Goran Ivanisevic / Iva Majoli
GERMANY: Boris Becker / Steffi Graf
CZECH REPUBLIC: Petr Korda / Jana Novotna
SWITZERLAND: Marc Rosset / Martina Hingis
USA: John McEnroe / Lindsay Davenport
FRANCE: Yannick Noah / Amelie Mauresmo
SPAIN: Emilio Sanchez / Arantxa Sanchez Vicario
AUSTRALIA: Patrick Rafter / Nicole Bradtke

It would be so much fun!

I also think the 2012 HC should invite back all 16 of the inaugural players to be treated to a week of luxury at the hotel and tournament, as it is the last to be held at the Burswood Dome before moving to a new complex. Without their initial support, the tournament would never have been as successful as it has been. This year's special guest is Pat Cash, who will speak at the traditional breakfast before the Final.

Where are they now?

MILOSLAV MECIR - ?
HELENA SUKOVA - has played Legends events...?
PAT CASH - occasionally competes on the Champions Tour, runs coaching clinics, speaks at events (lol), TV commentary work.
HANA MANDLIKOVA - ?
PATRIK KUHNEN - Davis Cup assistant coach...?
STEFANIE GRAF - married, kids, charity work, active in the promotion of tennis, plays occasional exhibitions.

MIKAEL PERNFORS - ?
CATARINA LINDQVIST-RYAN - married, kids...
THIERRY TULASNE - Davis Cup coach...
PASCALE PARADIS-MAGNON - ?
SHUZO MATSUOKA - ?
MASAKO YANAGI - ?
JEREMY BATES - former Davis Cup captain?
SARAH LOOSEMORE - married, kids, works as a lawyer, plays A Grade tennis in her county.
SLOBODAN ZIVOJINOVIC - ?
KARMEN SKULJ - ?PASCALE PARADIS-MANGON - Works as database manager for a big french company, has 3 daughters between 11 and 17 yrs old and now prefers triathlon to tennis

I'm so sad that HC is moving to Perth Arena next year.

The Dome is so cozy and so intimate, the players walk through the front door of the dome and if you wait there you get to meet everyone. Like when I went on Dec 31, I saw Na, Petra, Bethanie, Richard, Lleyton, Jarmilla, Pironkova, Berdych and Medina Garrigues walk through that door and took pictures with Na and Petra. Pironkova declined a picture because she was apparently late to her practice session. I would have met Grigor but his practice session was at 6 so I cbfed waiting since the Dome closed at 3:30.

Plus, I love that it's indoors. Perth Arena will have a retractable roof. I don't think I could bare to sit for hours outside in the Perth heat. The climate in Perth is much hotter than Melbourne. :help:

HC 2012 is almost over. They had a great week. The funnest bit was watching newcomers/journeymen (Dmitrov, Wu Di, Nielson) try their best versing the big guns, it was fun to watch, so I hope that continues in 2013. :)

I'm really hoping for a German team next time - with the female being Lisicki, Petkovic or Goerges (hopefully Julia) and the male being Kohlschreiber, Mayer or even Petzchner.
To have Serena and Roddick or Fish or Isner would be awesome but a long stretch, I guess. Maybe they should get Venus to come instead...
The Australian team - please bring Tomic next year, and pair up with Stosur.
A Russian team with Youzhny and Pavly, Kirilenko or Zvnonareva would be good. Dulko + Del Potro would be cool. Nishikori and Date-Krumm would be the ultimate! :hearts: Cilc and Martic could be fun to watch. Also, have SRB come back with either Jelena or Ana, and if they can't get Novak try Viktor, could be a good change. :)

Anyway I'm getting carried away now.
