Soren arrives in style in Toronto
http://the-slice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Newcombe+Medal+Awards+t25BLmVNsMDl.jpg
The #1 Canadian Samantha Soren arrived at a movie premiere in Toronto tonight, just a few days before the beginning of the Rogers Cup aka The Canadian Open.
After having consistent results since Paris, Soren has been hyped up in the news and has high hopes herself before the start of the tournament.
"I'm really excited to get going here in Toronto. It's my Grand Slam really, it's broadcast nationally from the first match so I want to put on a good show for everyone. I'm really anticipating walking onto Centre Court and hearing the crowd and playing in front of my friends."
Soren's first match is anticipated to be Wednesday night against Sophie Voorleck.

First Round, Top Half

Clair McKrain def. Sabine Graf 7/6(5), 7/5
Clair changes tactics with success, prevailing in two tight sets for her first decent win since Roland Garros.

Nadia Banaszek def. Candela Sanchez 7/5, 6/4
Not the greatest match for the crowd, though many welcomed the return of Belarus to main draw tennis.

Samantha Soren def. Sophie Voorleck 6/3, 6/1
Samantha whizzed through to standing ovations.

Daria Afanasyeva def. Berenika Wojnarowska 6/3, 6/3
Daria is in great form and was another straight-set winner today.

Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu def. Elena Skankhova 6/7(11), 6/2, 6/1
After a shaky first set, Cristina-Elena woke up and won easily.

Jessamine Minella def. Yelena Pirilenko 6/3, 7/5
Revenge for Elkridge, as Jess goes searching for her first real run at full tour level.

Kathleen Pryde-Degman def. Mia Henriksson 6/3, 1/6, 6/4
An unfortunate return for Mia, muscled off the court here in this match of doubles stalwarts.

Anastasia Nemayeva def. Valerie Gallet 7/6(6), 6/0
Anastasia has not had a great season, but started off well here with the expected result.

Canadian breezes through to Round 2
http://bahamaderek.wordpress.com/files/2009/09/molik.jpg
Canada's Samantha Soren entered the Centre Court and immediately the Toronto crowd gave her a huge ovation. That theme would continue throughout the match as after every point won by Soren, the crowd would applaud and shout encouragement for their Canuck.
"The crowd was amazing. I was expecting some support but they just brought it up to another level. It kind of distracted me in the beginning and then I went down 2-0 but I realized I was playing a tennis match and wasn't here to be worshipped so I got down to business."
Voorleck was no match for Samantha after that as Soren won the match handily, 6-3 6-1. Her next adversary is the 9th seeded Sylvie Bailly.
"Sylvie is always tough to deal with. I won a round and have played a match so I know that I'm doing the right things and will just have to go out and execute my game plan."

Håkon
Aug 12th, 2011, 07:09 PM
Ella Felivitch def. Martine Kartincova 7/5, 3/6, 6/4
Ella triumphs in this battle of the out-of-form Czech players.

Regla Torres def. Destiny Hernich 6/2, 6/7(7), 6/2
On a hot day, Regla was dragged out into three set by Dess, who seems to have vanished a little again.

Tami Lamy-Chappuis def. [13]Marteena Huubere 6/2, 7/5
Marteena will be very disappointed with another early exit.

[15]Cornelia du Preez def. Lindsay Raymond 7/6(5), 6/1
Lindsay hasn't won a main draw singles match since Miami. She came pretty close in the first set here, but then crumbled.

Jookkarae Mensarb def. Brenda Gaga-Maduga 7/6(4), 6/2
A match between the makeshift doubles partners beckons after Jook bursts Brenda's bubble.

Rita Cebolla def. Elise Mesane 7/5, 7/5
Rita pushed Elise off the court with more energy and spirit.

Chantal Chan def. Verena Jameka Starr 6/0, 6/3
Chantal continues to push her way onto the serious tour with a win over a veteran.

Emilia Jarocka-Pottinger def. Yoona Im 2/6, 7/6(3), 6/3
Em returns after a July break with just a 24-point lead over the young Korean in the rankings; she saved four match points before taking this home and going on to face Athea.

[14]Athea Kane def. Lindsay Galbraith 7/5, 6/4
Athea got her first decent result in a couple of months last week with a QF in San Diego, and continued with a straight sets win here.

Caroline Smith def. [16]Vittoria Perez 7/6(0), 7/6(0)
Vittoria fell apart totally in the tie-breaks. Three of six double faults came there.

Fleri Hingisafrilia def. Yanina Wickmayer 7/6(4), 7/6(4)
Fleri is coming back for the US swing and triumphed in two tight tie-breaks.

Khunyah Nomyan def. Alexandra Anastadis 1/6, 6/4, 7/6(5)
Junior Khunyah gets her tactics pretty bang on here, relying on serve in the last sets to take it home.

Singles Second Round

[1]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Clair McKrain 6/4, 7/6(4)
Ziyi continues to do what she does best; dismantle opponents without too much effort.

[12]Saba Abid def. Nadia Banaszek 6/2, 7/6(7)
Nadia came very, very close to mounting a serious comeback here, but still picks up very useful ranking points.

Samantha Soren def. [9]Sylvie Bailly 6/4, 7/6(8)
Sylvie's comeback is slightly derailed by a raucuous home crowd.

[8]Siri Cornetsson def. Daria Afanasyeva 7/6(0), 2/6, 6/3
Daria wanted to build on a successful first week but never really looked likely to win this.

Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu def. [5]Jennifer Casanova 1/6, 6/2, 7/6(5)
Cristina fell out of the top 20 last week but is sure to be back with a fine comeback against one of the form players. Jen thought this would be easy after the first set.

Jessamine Minella def. [11]Giuseppina Benedetti 7/5, 6/3
Jess wins two matches in a row for the first time since Strasbourg, while Giusa fails to defend her title from Cincinnati last year and is definitely out of the top 10.

Kathleen Pryde-Degman def. [10]Jane Wong 5/7, 7/6(5), 7/5
Kathleen was the last Canadian Open winner in Toronto, and made an important step towards staying a top-30 player with a win over fellow Asian veteran Jane.

[3]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. Anastasia Nemayeva 6/0, 1/6, 7/6(3)
Ruffy gets revenge for her Wimbledon loss and makes it 6-1. As in SW19, it all came down to a marathon third set.

Ella Felivitch def. [4]Nthamangela Mbangu 6/3, 7/6(2)
Ella is #48 and Nthama #3 on points earned this year. Still, her head-to-head magic continued to work as she came through in the tie-break.

Tami Lamy-Chappuis def. Regla Torres 7/6(8), 6/1
Regla was furious with a line call at 7/7 in the tie-break and never really came back here.

[15]Cornelia du Preez def. Jookkarae Mensarb 7/5, 7/6(6)
The doubles partners for the week met in an interesting clash; Cora is yet to drop a set.

[6]Harper Johnson def. Rita Cebolla 0/6, 6/3, 6/3
Harper was blasted off the court in the first set, but just waited out the energetic Spaniard.

[7]Luna-Willow Bartoli def. Chantal Chan 1/6, 6/3, 6/4
Luna's plane arrived late from Madagascar, but she got some friendly schedulers and recovered in time from the jet-lag.

Emilia Jarocka-Pottinger def. [14]Athea Kane 1/6, 6/3, 6/4
Em played good tennis throughout, but didn't really get things to click in the first set, failing to convert six break points. She had luck with her towards the end.

Fleri Hingisafrilia def. Caroline Smith 7/5, 2/6, 6/3
The veteran always looked in control of this match, and could afford to drop a set.

[2]Pamela Bowden def. Khunyah Nomyan 6/3, 7/6(2)
Pamela gets a very easy draw first up and exploits it.

Håkon

Doubles First Round

[13]Henriksson/Jarocka-Pottinger def. Nomyarn/Minella 6/3, 7/6(5)
The crowd didn't fancy an upset here, but the junior and the rookie came pretty close to the former GS champions.

[14]Bowden/Mbangu def. Gaga-Maduga/Torres 7/5, 6/4
Brenda's early bubble seems to have burst, as the two singles form players progress easily.

[15]du Preez/Mensarb def. Bailly/Banaszek 7/6(6), 6/7(1), 7/5
The seeds never looked particularly comfortable, but had the stamina against the returning veterans.

[9]Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman def. Anastadis/Galbraith 2/6, 6/2, 7/6(2)
Great day for both Fleri and Kath, winning singles and doubles. They are also looking to defend Toronto 2009.

[10]Kane/C. Smith def. Hernich/Starr 6/1, 6/3
Athea and Caroline were both out of singles and took their energy out on players who didn't really seem to be here.

[16]Wickmayer/Wojnarowska def. Pirilenko/Soren 5/7, 7/6(1), 7/6(6)
Yanina and Berenika continue to play very well together, and in a high class match they served out the match in style.

Afanasyeva/Im def. [12]Nemayeva/Perez 6/4, 7/5
Daria and Yoona are the only unseeded pair left.

[11]Graf/Huubere def. Cebolla/Sanchez 0/6, 6/3, 6/3
Rita again starts well, but with no help from Candela and little stamina it was too tough against this pair, who reached the Canadian Open final in 2004.

Regla Torres loses controversial match and attends TIFF

A bad line call in the first set tiebreak distracted the Spaniard, who lost the match 7-6 6-1 against Tamy Lamy-Chappuis.

Torres shook off the loss quick enough though as she was later seen attending a film premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Singles Third Round

[12]Saba Abid def. [1]Ziyi Zianzhi 6/3, 3/6, 7/6(3)
The night match was unexpectedly flat despite it being a two-hour affair; neither player had brought their best game.

[8]Siri Cornetsson def. Samantha Soren 6/3, 1/6, 7/5
A raucous third set eventually exploded when Cornetsson broke to 6/5 with a forehand to end a ten-shot rally.

Jessamine Minella def. Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu 6/3, 7/5
Jess is yet to drop a set, though is the least proven players among the quarterfinalists.

Kathleen Pryde-Degman def. [3]Ruflina Taliamanosoko 5/7, 7/6(6), 7/6(2)
These players also met in the last 16 a week ago, and then Ruffy won the first set 7/5 too. Kathleen drew the luckier lot in the tie-break and seemed in control from there.

Ella Felivitch def. Tami Lamy-Chappuis 7/6(2), 4/6, 6/4
Ella will burst up the rankings with a second decent run; with her København win she might be in contention for Bali, too.

[15]Cornelia du Preez def. [6]Harper Johnson 6/2, 7/6(5)
Harper thought she could mount a comeback as in the previous round, but the swirling winds were on the South African's side.

[7]Luna-Willow Bartoli def. Emilia Jarocka-Pottinger 7/6(1), 7/6(5)
The last pseudo-Canadian hope goes out; Em's only tournament in August ends with a top-16 effort.

[2]Pamela Bowden def. Fleri Hingisafrilia 3/6, 6/4, 7/6(3)
Pamela is on a roll again. A calm and nerveless performance to take this out in three.

Doubles Second Round

[1]Cornetsson/Johnson def. [13]Henriksson/Jarocka-Pottinger 7/5, 3/6, 6/3
Siri and Harper haven't lost in round one since Madrid.

[14]Bowden/Mbangu def. [6]G. Benedetti/Raymond 7/5, 6/7(5), 7/6(3)
Nthama gets some reward for staying behind as she triumphs in a close match.

[15]du Preez/Mensarb def. [8]Chan/Vladimirescu 6/3, 7/6(4)
Cornelia and Jook had made up after their singles match and continue to go through the draw.

[9]Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman def. [4]Felivitch/Mesane 5/7, 7/5, 7/6(6)
Fleri joins Kath in the quarterfinals in one of the night's most exciting matches; both teams had four match points each before Fleri broke on Elise's serve.

[10]Kane/C. Smith def. [3]Bartoli/Kartincova 6/3, 7/5
A second straight-sets win for Caroline and Athea.

[16]Wickmayer/Wojnarowska def. [5]Wong/Zianzhi 4/6, 7/6(1), 6/4
Berenika and Yanina came back from a slow start to defeat the all-Chinese team.

[7]McKrain/Skankhova def. Afanasyeva/Im 1/6, 6/4, 6/3
Clair and Elena are the second-highest seeds going through.

[11]Graf/Huubere def. [2]Casanova/Taliamanosoko 1/6, 6/1, 7/6(5)
A bad evening for Ruffy, as Sabine transferred her good singles form to the doubles circuit.

Yanina and Berenika survives their first two rounds into Quarter Finals

[Toronto, Canada] Yanina and Berenika are the most improved doubles team in some months, or I should say they are the best new teams in FWTT doubles tour. Yanina Wickmayer, the Hong Kongese joined FWTT tour in May and started to paired with Berenika in Roland Garros. They got into the final just after their paring arrangement is made. Then, they have been into three finals(Budapest and Eastbourne) and won their first title together at ITF Petange three weeks ago. 'We were really really happy, though it's just an ITF tournament, but we still prove our ability to win something and we are promising and sure that we will be a great time for all time! SWe have been into some finals and felt a bit short, but today we have the faith and we go hard for it...' Yanina said at the ceremony after winning her third title (2ITFs) with Berenika. Yanina also won another tour-level tournament at Birmingham with Emilia J-Pottinger.

Yanina/Berenika made their debut in Toronto after lossing to the first seed Cornetsson/Johnson in round two of Standford two weeks ago. They have lost to the great team like three or four times already. 'We believe we have done well and will be improved bit by bit.' Yanina said. She and Berenika then broke up in the following week. Yanina played in ITF while Berenika go for Carlsbad. They then come back together to play their 7th tournament as a team. 'We are now at #14 in the race ranking and we will do our best to climb up, we have tha ability to play in the YEC' Yanina said. But rumours didn't appreciate her speech, saying that she is overrated and selfish.

In their fist match on Roger's Cup, they are seeded 16, and have a gret fought with Pirilenko/Soren winning 5/7, 7/6(1), 7/6(6)"We were lucky to get this out. We nearly lose it, but still get through, we need time to compromise after missing each other a week. We havn't played a lot in hard court as a team so we need to work this out.' Yanina said at the conference.

In the second match yesterday, the battled aginst the fifth seed Wong/Zianzhi 4/6, 7/6(1), 6/4.'It's tough, we were sllow at the first set and then peak at the second.I mean they are great dubs player, they played really well and they are my friend on tour. They are nice and gave me lots od advice. I am really glad to beat them and they played really well.'Yanina said at an interview after the match.

In the next match, they will face the 10th seed Kane/Smith. We hope Yanina and Berenika can do well and make the tournament exciting.

Singles Results, Quarterfinals

[8]Siri Cornetsson def. [12]Saba Abid 7/6(3), 5/7, 7/5
Siri was pushed in the third again, but came up well in the third set. Winning at home seems to have rekindled her career.

Kathleen Pryde-Degman def. Jessamine Minella 7/6(0), 1/6, 6/1
Kathleen avoids a ranking plunge by beating the rookie, who still records her best performance on the tour.

Ella Felivitch def. [15]Cornelia du Preez 7/5, 3/6, 6/4
A real comeback from Ella, who has started to defend last year's decent summer and autumn spell.

[2]Pamela Bowden def. [7]Luna-Willow Bartoli 7/5, 3/6, 7/6(1)
After a brief post-Wimbledon wobble, Pamela's all-court brand is working again. She's the only teenager left in this tournament.

[1]Cornetsson/Johnson def. [14]Bowden/Mbangu 6/3, 0/6, 6/2
Siri completed a set of semifinals despite a second-set collapse. She's the only player in both semifinals...

[15]du Preez/Mensarb def. [9]Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman 6/4, 7/6(2)
...because of this upset, where Jook was in prime form and hardly lost a point on serve.

[10]Kane/C. Smith def. [16]Wickmayer/Wojnarowska 6/4, 6/4
Yanina and Berenika have played well together, but today they weren't able to play against a team that are yet to lose a set.

[11]Graf/Huubere def. [7]McKrain/Skankhova 7/6(5), 6/7(0), 7/5
Sabine and Marteena win the only real close match of the doubles day, eventually pinching a break off Elena's serve.

The Toronto's crowd favorite all week was Samantha Soren but unfortunately for them she lost to the 8th seed, Siri Cornetsson 7-5 in the third on Centre Court.
"I wanted to go further in this tournament and really let the crowd raise my game up. I guess it was just not meant to be, it will be a hard loss to get over but I'll try. The crowd's support was fantastic and I would just like to thank everyone for encouraging me this week."
Her next tournament is in Cincinnati,Ohio next week.
