Who is the girl youīve put in your avatar?
Sep 26th, 2001, 07:23 PM

Elena won 5-7 6-4 7-5
Sep 26th, 2001, 07:38 PM
I sure hope that Elena "darling" Dementieva has a strong finish to the year. By the way Eggy, which Elena won? When it comes to the Russian girls, you have to specify! Because they are so many Elena's!
Sep 26th, 2001, 08:48 PM
Elena "darling" Dementieva?
Wasnīt Elena "petite" Dementieva instead?
She said that was her nickname when she was younger, because she was already tall at that time.

ED good win over EL!

Elena plays Daniela Hantuchova tomorrow and hopefully its LIVE on TV here
all the best Alyona !!!!!!!!!!!!
Sep 27th, 2001, 04:02 PM
So Hantuchova won over Jelena?
Dam the draw!
It wasnīt enough Daniela had to play my other favourite(Jelena)
Now itīs Daniela against Elena.
Itīs a bit hard seeing my favourites playing each other
Sep 28th, 2001, 06:02 PM
Elena beat Daniela Hantuchova 6-4 6-3 and is into semis
she played great stuff and is looking back to her best
well done and good luck tomorrow v Kim C
Sep 29th, 2001, 02:42 PM
Sergio, my affectionate nickname for Elena is Elena "darling" Dementieva. I know she was called "petite" as a kid.
Sep 30th, 2001, 12:59 AM
I was disappointed Elena lost to Kim today. But on reflection, that was not a bad loss; Kim is just a better player, for now, than Elena.
Reaching the semis was a good start to the autumn campaign of Elena. I hope she goes a round further in each event she enters, and gets that all-important first title this year.
Oct 1st, 2001, 11:39 AM
I wish she would get one of those good trainers, so her game could evolve more.
But itīs amazing that even tough she doesnīt have a trainer, she is one of the best players of the world.
Oct 1st, 2001, 12:11 PM
a bit of mixed news .....
Elena will not have to play Henrieta .... but instead will play Elena Bovina
terrible luck .... but Elena Dementieva has to win ....

I was so happy that Elena B. fought through the qualifying , but what bad luck for her in the main Draw!
If Elena D. doesn't win this one, I wil be astonished. I think Elena D. is improving fast now, and I don't think she will be derailed in round 1 by Bovina. But somehow I want it to end so that BOTH feel good about their games! Is that possible?
Oct 2nd, 2001, 10:06 AM
Elena Dementieva bt Elena Bovina 6-3 6-4

well done Elena and good luck in rest of tourney

Congrats on winning the all-Russian match in one hour, Elena!
Now good luck against Alexandra, who is suddenly playing well -- run her around as much as you can, and you can win easily!
Oct 2nd, 2001, 02:26 PM
Janie, as well as Alexandra is playing, I don't think Elena will beat her easily. When they played at the 2001 Ericsson Open, Stevenson had a bad back. She didn't have any aces, and retired in the second set from back pain. I think Elena will have her hands full in this match. It's indoors, where there isn't the sun or wind to bother Alexandra's serve. Alex is healthy and finally showing good form. If she serves well, she could upset Elena. But if Elena can play good defense and play long points, she should win. I'm glad Alexandra finally seems to be heading in the right direction. I give her credit traveling all the way to Russia to play the Qualies. When other players, who had a first round bye, chose to stay home. Janie, what makes you think Elena is playing so well?
Oct 2nd, 2001, 02:39 PM
Elena didn't play well .... serve was nothing like it was last week..... too tentative.
She has to play 60% better tomorrow or else its going to be very hard.
Elena will have to play forehand to forehand.......

Hmm .. maybe I rushed too fast in concluding that Elena can beat Alex easily. I saw Alex's stats from tody and they did not look so hot to me.
Whereas ED beat EB easily in what I thought might be a tough match emotionally for them both. Also, Elena is playing better than she did last year at this time, so I was pinning my hopes on that happy news.
Let's face it -- I just WANT Elena to beat her and have a good tournament here!!!
Oct 2nd, 2001, 07:11 PM
Eggy, you want Elena D. to play forehand to forehand against Alexandra? Isn't the forehand Alexandra's best and most powerful shot? I would like to see Elena play to Stevenson's backhand. And get her into long points where Elena's far superior speed will win her the match. But if she plays Stevenson power to power, then Alex has a real chance. Because Alex, with her serve and power, will win more cheap points than Elena. Especially indoors. Elena needs to win this match, and then take her chance with Martina. Udachi Elena!
Oct 3rd, 2001, 06:18 PM
cat .... Alex's backhand is her strong shot , she hasn't got a forehand , it goes all over the place.
Good luck Elena , it will be played late afternoon and it will be pretty full.

Hi, I'm here too. Thanks for the link fresh2flash, I hadn't been checking that mail for a long time and only now I found it.
Congrats Elena for your first big final and I hope my appearance won't stop your victorious course to the first title.
Only these DF worry me. In Laipzig she had almost cleaned them but now they are growing more and more. I hope today's difficulties were because of her discomfort of playing with countrywomen but tomorrow she will come out quite motivated and concentrated as against Hingis yesterday. Elena has a bone to pick with Jelena too.
Oh , yes Elena and Lina just won their SF!

Oh Lenocka, what a chance you wasted.
I think Elena was burned still before the match. Too much she craved for this title and this made her nervous and impatient. Too many free points she gave as a present to Jelena. And this damned shoulder completely disorganized her serve. Last week she served pretty well, she wasn't allowing a breakpoint almost a whole match. This week the serve was the biggest torture and she was losing 2-3 games only from DF. Yes, today she made "only" 5, but this was at the expense of the power and the precision and Dokic was taking the initiative easily. Maybe the reason was the pain, maybe the fear of DF.
Elena isn't in the draw of Filderstadt. Sadly, but this is the only right decision. She is exhausted physically and psychically.
But don't despair dear Lena! This was a wonderful tourney, you crushed the world #1, you reached your first big final, you almost obtained your spot in Munich. Take a rest and come back stronger!
Oct 7th, 2001, 06:04 PM
Elena has almost guaranteed her place in Munich ... but thats little consolation
a title is so much more , gives you recognization and self belief.
Hopefully its not too long before she makes another final.

Helena's interview after the game for her site
(Sorry for the lausy translation of the altavista translator)
Helen Dement'eva: " we were not under the equal conditions " 17.10.01
Damage/defeat from the 17- the summer of the mari -Ga4n3 Of mikaelyan became for Helen Dement'evoy one of the unhealthy in the present season. Long ago already it did not lose/play to tennis player, not entering even first hundred. " my rival acted simply healthily; however, if we with it were situated in the equal conditions, into the second circle it would leave 4, and not it ", said Dement'eva in the interview for correspondent " se It internet " to Gleb SHATUNOVSKOMU.
- in me were bad presentiments already before beginning competitions. I want no one to offend, but this tournament is organized simply ugly. In order to be trained on central Kort, who, in principle, is there and only, I should it was necessary arise in 6 mornings. But coating on training Korts differs from the coating on main area.
- it does mean, it is possible to say that in the following year you to Zurich will not arrive?
- 4 it is not ready to make such categorical statements. However, I can say that the desire here to return i do not have.
- rival you by something did astonish?
- unfortunately, we arrived to Zurich too late, and 4 it could not look the matches of qualification, in which took part Mikaelyan. 4 it feared, that, having successfully conducted three matches, rival will be " in motion ". Unfortunately, so it left. Truly mad impacts/shocks were passed in it, whereas 4 entire first set it fought with the inconvenient coating.
- your following match against Mikaelyan will pass on another scenario?
- it would like in this to believe.

Elena: In future, if you have to get up at 6:00 to practice on the main court, JUST DO IT!!!!
If you want to be a champion, you will have to learn to accept vagaries of court surfaces, awkward practice times, surprisingly good opponents having the best day of their career, and and many, many other obstacles that will be thrown in your path.

I'm glad that Elena doesn't lose her confidence, but I'm afraid that she doesn't try to find the reasons where it should be and she needs a professional coach badly to point her them. As janie has noted it's hardly likely that there will be ideal conditions for her mode of playing some time. And if she await them the win will never come.
Was the difference between the surfaces biger than the difference between their rankings? I saw Mikaelian played the play of her life so far, but a player claiming top 10 (or higher) should find a way to curb this wild junior. Elena's play is impressive and spectacular, but unfortunately it's right-minded and unvaried as well. One weapon isn't enough however powerful it's.
Elena, you won't be able to overpower all these muscular manlike women. Take advantage of your speed and mind! You have both
Oct 18th, 2001, 02:46 PM
Bulfan, who are the muscular manlike women?
And, should you be referring to women this way?
P.S. - I've been complaing all year that Elena should have a traveling coach to help her with strategy. She has tremendous speed, and is an excellent defesive player. But Elena is too worried about hitting winners. It's too bad. Because she should be a better player than she is. Do you think Elena should work with a sports psychologist? I do. It can only help. Look what a sports psychologist did for Irina Slutskaya. She's gone from being a good figutre skater to being the best or second best in the world. Now that's impressive!
Oct 18th, 2001, 04:00 PM
I like Elena the way she is. I think that she is very intelligent person, and while I think she might be doing something wrong, it would not be right for me to think that I understand what she needs better than she does. She is a tennis professional, not me. She is the only Russian female tennis player whose commitment to success in sport has never looked compromised and I have my faith in her.
Oct 18th, 2001, 04:01 PM
cat, I can't think of ONE Russian pro (among the women) who WOULDN'T benefit from seeing a sports psychologist! They all need some help to rein in their rampant emotions and focus on ONE POINT AT A TIME, forgetting the opponent and the surrounding distractions. That is what a sports psychologist could help them do.
Elena D. is maybe the Russian player I think would benefit the most from this type of aid, because I think she already has some of the required mental tools of a champion. And I believe the ones she lacks could definitely be added to her tool chest with the right help.
Oct 18th, 2001, 04:41 PM
I have my faith in Elena as well. I actually see a bit of Kafelnikov's character in her..
I am willing to wait and watch her progress. i'm sure 2002 will be her best year to date...
Oct 18th, 2001, 05:07 PM
I'd say, early Kafelnikov. I watched the Kafelnikov's documentary recently , all three cassetes, that were filmed in 1997-1998, i.e., in his pre-Stefanki period, and there he appears to be very different person than he is now. And I think there is a real difference, I remember his interview back in 1997, 1998, he was always very humble person, he had nothing of that attitude of arrogant champion that he sometimes has now. I remember his interview in 1998, a couple of weeks before
US Open, he said that he has 0 chance for the Open. And then Stefanki comes, and suddenly Kafelnikov becomes a different person, very outspoken, arrogant soemtimes, a huge self-opinion ( "when I play my best game, there is one, maybe two players in the world that can match me ").. Maybe Dementieva needs Stefanki?

ys, thanks for sharing that info on Yevgeny's documentary..
It makes sense on how Stefanki has changed Yevgeny. Remember when he won Aussie Open, he thanked Pete for not being there and I read somewhere that Stefanki was angry at Yevgeny for making that remark. Probably, he had changed Yevgeny to be more self-confident leading to some arrogance. At least it helped Yevgeny to win titles which is what Elena desires as well. So I guess having Stefanki-type of coach for Elena may help.

Cat, don't you really know women of that kind? I won't mention names because this thread may be transformed into a battle-field but unfortunately they are dominating now. Maybe it was a bit rudely but it's true. Do you like all players? Honestly I don't. And not everyone likes Elena. Look how much malice and hatred of her are rising from 2 other threads these days. Maybe because she isn't a manlike woman.
About the necessity of a psychologist - I have noticed it in the past, yes IMO she needs him as well as a coach, a personal doctor. But her mom is all them and I doubt that she will resort to their help some day.
But let's hope that ys is right and she better knows what she needs!
Oct 18th, 2001, 07:23 PM
Bulfan, what other two threads are showing hatred towards Elena "darling" Dementieva? AnnaK.org? CNNSI? What? I don't read the CNNSI message boards. Elena has a very nice physique. And she even has some muscle. But she still looks feminine. Don't you agree, Bulfan? Now, if she would only work on her tan! And her backhand! And hire a traveling coach. Then her game would take off again. Udachi Elena!
Oct 18th, 2001, 07:56 PM
Cat, I spoke about threads here - in "General messages" and "Swisscom" about her statement after the loss. And Elena is the most beautiful tennis player to me, you should know it. To me and to you, but not to all.
Oct 18th, 2001, 10:20 PM
LOL about Elena needing to work on her "TAN"!!!
I must say, this is my very favorite thread on this WHOLE board. Bulfan also had me LOL earlier, about Elena needing to find a way to "curb this wild Junior".
Anyway, the Linz site says that Elena was expected to arrive there today. Good for her, arriving early to get used to the conditions and get some good, hard practice in!!
Enjoy your stay in Linz, Elena!!

Good luck Elena tomorrow against Babs Schwartz! DO NOT follow the examples of Anastasia or Elena B.!

Oct 23rd, 2001, 09:33 PM
Alyona will win, I have no doubt.. :)
Oct 24th, 2001, 01:49 AM
I feel very confident too, ys. She showed up days early, according to the web site, and will be used to the conditions.
A flying start of Elena and a good lesson for the self- reliant Austrian
I'm sorry for Tatiana but she should be the next victim.
Go Alyoona, I predicted on your web-site that your first title will be here two months ago!
Oct 25th, 2001, 03:31 PM
Janie, "watch out, little Tataiana"!. That's funny! What, is Tatiana a helpless kitten? Remember, Tatiana has a win over Elena. Bulfan, does Elena's official website have english translation yet?
Oct 25th, 2001, 05:21 PM
The wise cat spoke well. I can't think how Elena could fall apart so completely to a kitten.
ALL my faves are on the losing side today - even Arantxa lost.
I hope Elena gets her game back in time to do some damage in Munich, but I am beginning to doubt her mental strength.
Oct 25th, 2001, 09:38 PM
After yesterday's enthusiasm my optimism has disappeared completely today. Not so much the loss as her way of play relapsed me into summer's doubts about her future. Today she was lacking in self-confidence, determination, motivation. Elena didn't dare to finish about a dozen easy points from the middle of the court and then lost most of them. Instead she was trying to make impossible winners from the outside line but after 2-3 returns of Tatjana she was finishing with errors. Elena was too passive during the whole match and was allowing Tatiana to run her around instead it to be the reverse.
Before Elena's match I saw Iroda - she was reacting to every winner almost as if she had won the whole match. The same thing is with Jelena, Kim, Justine and all promising players. Elena - no reaction, no champion's flame in her eyes. Don't you burn with desire to win like them, Elena? I refuse to believe it. Let loose your emotion and that will give you more strength, power and confidence. And allow some professional coach to help you.
Please don't sink in the mediocrity Alyona, believe yourself, we still believe you!
No cat, there isn't an english section yet, but ask fresh2flash he should be informed better.

Thanks janie, although I would prefer the yesterday's perky jabber
Oct 26th, 2001, 12:19 PM
Cat, the English version still doesn`t exist and I`m afraid, if the things go as they are it will hardly appear. Very sad.
Oct 26th, 2001, 02:46 PM
Janie, how did "little Tatiana" do against big Elena? If Elena only had a coach! Then these mediocre results of hers would improve.
Oct 28th, 2001, 02:48 PM
Good luck Elena v Kim in Munich
hope you can repeat last years efforts
Well, it`s all decided. There is no Elena Dementieva`s official site anymore.
Oct 30th, 2001, 04:27 PM
oh nooo thats so disapppointing
no sites for Elena or Lina now
Oct 30th, 2001, 04:51 PM
But it still works.. Besides, do you think it does not matter at all what Elena thinks about that? Or is it being done with her consent? I believe as soon as you put the word "official" next to someone's page, it is not longer up to site-maintaining organisation whether to run or to stop doing that..
Oh, I just realised what you meant.. Site actually works, but it no longer says "official". So it must have been done with her agreement. Perhaps, it is really Octagon.
Oct 30th, 2001, 05:05 PM
Just seen the site as well , still works
now we wonder how much it will be updated and how often ????
Oct 30th, 2001, 05:11 PM
Well, you must have noticed, that there is no word "official". Yes, it still works, but for how long?
Oct 30th, 2001, 05:17 PM
Well, it is again reading between the lines, but my guess would be that Octagon could have insisted on them being the sole representative of all player-related public relations. OK, it is not "official". What does it change? Especially if "official" one does not exist.
Oct 30th, 2001, 05:43 PM
I'm trying to get a response from Octagon , hopefully they will let me know.
Oct 30th, 2001, 06:35 PM
Will Octagon put English translation on Elena's site? It was supposed to have English translation by the 2001 U.S. Open. Right?
P.S. - Eggy, thanks for the photos! Wow! Elena has some physique. I think she is strong enough. I would like to see Elena become faster than she already is. I hope she doesn't add any more weight and muscle. Speed is where it's at! I hope Elena gets even quicker. Udachi Elena!

Wow! These pics are marvellous. Especially the last one. Doesn't Elena tread in the steps of Anna? I pray God her play to be in correspondence with her beauty.
The lack of "official" doesn't worry me, but I wonder if Elena will continue to answer in the guestbook and to appear into the chat.
I don't cherish great hopes for tomorrow but anyway good luck Alyona and disprove me!

Very funny Janie! You are on a roll! It was such a dissapointing year for Elena. Kim Clijsters had the kind of year I hoped Elena would have. I guess the pressure and expectations were too much. Elena now has sponors, like Yonex and Pegaso, who she needs to please. That was additional pressure. And all those double faults. They just ruin her confidence. Elena D. and Anna K have so much in common. Especially unforced errors and double faults. And no WTA titles. I just hope Elena can play better clutch tennis next year. Otherwise she is doomed to be just another good top 20 player. But I feel she can do so much more. Can she? Elena has tremendous size, power and speed. But something is missing. I think its mental toughness. Elena doesn't have enough. Clijsters and Dokic do. And that's why there are better tennis players than Elena. Anyway, I hope Elena has a fine and healthy 2002. And hiring a coach who could help wouldn't hurt. Udachi Elena in 2002!
Oct 31st, 2001, 09:40 PM
Unfortunately Elena didn't disprove me and after the "traditional" dozen DF she wound up her WTA travel for this year.
But the worst thing - she looked happy after the end
Are you contented with yourself Elena? Did you achieve your purposes from last year? You were dreaming for the #1 in the world, don't you remember? That isn't your level Lena, come to your senses, please!
Make the urgent changes, then forget quickly this squandered year and come back with reborn ambitions, motivation and mentally toughness in 2002!
Nov 1st, 2001, 02:31 PM
The strange thing is, I really believe Elena's game was much improved from last year.
But she does have eerily Kournikova-like mental weaknesses on court. I don't have any idea if or when she can overcome these. I hope so. Next year will be a very improtant one for her.
At least she FINALLY got some flattering clothes to wear on court!
Good luck in Fed Cup, Elena!
Nov 1st, 2001, 02:33 PM
Bravo bulfan! At least someone agrees with me. Elena needs to make changes. But I think she is too stubborn to do so. I get the feeling that she's content with being in the WTA top 20. I hope that's not true. But I get that feeling.
Nov 1st, 2001, 02:40 PM
Iīve managed to watch the game today, ok she was smiling at the end, but that is because she as good sportmanship(shoudnīt in this case be "sportgirlship"?) and she is a VERY nice girl, donīt take that for beeing happy for her year. During the game she seemed to be a bit sad(maybe she is not feeling very well) and one thing that is not common to Elena, she got angry! Elena puted a angry face and mumbled some words after Kim made a point.
Looks as she now as a trainer, the Eurosport commentator referred to a trainer, I donīt remember his name , but it was a russian name.
I hope she starts to improve now, I want to see her in the top 10 again. I hope everything comes up roses for her next year, she deserves it.
Nov 1st, 2001, 03:08 PM
he said Sergei Pashkov , he's been training her since she left Spartak club and moved to CSKA , the "Red Army" club.
Elena ave away too many doubles esp on 1st points , she generally dictated play and made too many errors .
When she thought out points and then hit the winner it paid off but when she just tried to blast Kim , she sprayed it too much
Nov 1st, 2001, 03:27 PM
Sergio, when you say Elena has a trainer, I thought you meant a fitness trainer. She has had the same coach, Segey Pashkov, for many years. I don't know how much of a coach he really is. He hardly ever travels with her. I think he stays in Moscow to coach kids at the Red Army Tennis Club. Elena needs a full time coach. Not a part time coach. If she doesn't realize that after such a dissapointing year, then she will be destined to being just a top 20 player. And Elena can do so much more. But she needs help from others in order to get to the next level. And I don't think she's getting enough help.
Nov 1st, 2001, 03:55 PM
Sometimes I think that for players qualifying for Masters means more than actually playing Masters.
Qualifying is a goal, it is, as Kafelnikov said, a sign that you had a good year. But once you got to play there, player perhaps realises that it is just another tournament, besides, the last tournament of the year, so they are not that much excited about it.
Nov 7th, 2001, 08:29 PM
The more it goes, the more respect I have for this girl..
Nov 7th, 2001, 08:44 PM
Hey guys, can i join Elena Dementieva fan club ???
Elena is one of my favourite players on the tour, she's beautiful, talented, nice .... she plays great tennis and i belive, she will make it back to the top ten next year.
Nov 7th, 2001, 09:01 PM
sure ...... just come in and cheer for her .
well done Alyona today , a great win under pressure
and keep it going for tomorrow.
Nov 8th, 2001, 03:13 AM
She is The woman. The only real hope of Russian women tennis. The second close one being Anna, given what she is saying now in interview is what she really feels, i.e. that she has to make an impact now, focus 101% and convert her incredible potential into titles..With a slight correction of myself being drunk a bit - my friend got his Green Card approved, and I am drunk and happy.. :)
Nov 8th, 2001, 07:22 AM
Yeah, she is The Player for me too... Just saw her delayed telecast SANEX WTA match against Kim last night.
In spite of her loss, the more I watch her play, the more I like her game(except her shaky serve) and the way she projects herself on court. Let's hope 2002 will be her year.
But first, the Fed Cup, congrats to Elena for the crucial win over the Czechs . Seriously, she is the backbone of the Russian Team.
Go Elena Go!
Go Russia Go!

Can someone translate the rest of the interview for me. Or at least give me an idea what Elena was saying. Thanks.

Too bad Elena could not finish Jennifer off! But she must have played pretty well to have the score so close.
Best of luck in Sydney, Elena!:)
Jan 5th, 2002, 08:31 PM
Boy was the score close........
Too bad for Elena.....But I was glad that she made Jennifer work real hard to win.
I think we can forsee this year to be a good year for Elena!
Go Elena in 2002!!!
Jan 6th, 2002, 10:05 AM
Elena played good against Jen, i think she will win. However
Elena getting nervous when she was serving 4-5, She did so many unforce error on that game. So she lose. Elena definitly is a talent good player. Better luck next time.
some articles from HK newspaper:
"Dementieva said winning the doubles was some consolation for losing to Jennifer Capriati in the singles final. 'It's a happy end for me,' She said. 'I am just happy about it but I am very tired right now. It was good final against Capriati but I think I didn't have much luck. 'Lina and myself have been paying in a few tournaments and we will also be competing in the Australian Open. I don't really like playing doubles too much. We only play a few times a year. It's enough for me.'
Congrats to Lina and Elena won the Hong Kong Ladies Challenge doubles title!! :bounce:
Jan 6th, 2002, 11:41 AM
In the first round of the Adidas Intl tournament Elena will face Conchita Martinez. Good-luck, Alyona. I hope you can win this one.

Best of luck in Sydney Alyona
good luck against Conchi and go all the way :)
Jan 7th, 2002, 12:34 AM
Go luck Elena :)
wishing you every sucess tonight :)
and congrats on the doubles title in HKG with Lina :)
Jan 7th, 2002, 02:23 AM
Yes, Good Luck to Elena against Conchi, even though I like Conchi too.:)
Elena can overpower Conchi, but she has to watch out for those confounding spins and changes of pace the versatile Conchi will throw at her. Elena has to be patient! And jump all over Conchi's serve, of course!
But I think she will win in straight sets. :D
Jan 7th, 2002, 02:30 AM
Jan 7th, 2002, 05:19 PM
Apparently Conchi did succeed in confounding the less experienced Elena -- this time! :(
Oh well! Last year, Jennifer Capraiti lost early in Sydney, and we all know what happened next for her!
Keep the faith, Elena! You can do it!
Jan 7th, 2002, 07:29 PM
We have faith in you, Elena!
All the best in the coming AO!
Good luck in your doubles match with Lina tomorrow!

Good Luck to ELENA against ALINA! :D :D :D
Jan 11th, 2002, 08:17 AM
Alina who? Jidkova?
Jan 11th, 2002, 09:02 AM
Yup, Alina Jidkova is Elena's 1st rd opponent at AO....
Potential 2nd rd opponent is Myskina
What an awful draw for Elena! :(
Jan 11th, 2002, 03:57 PM
Not a good draw at all.
playing Alinka, then Anastasia.
C'mon Elena, time to get to week two in Melbourne.
Jan 12th, 2002, 12:28 AM
Awful draw? Apart from playing Russians, I think Elena has a chance to win a couple mathces in Melbourne. I wouldn't be surprised if Myskina beat her, though. Would you? Udachi Elena!

Best wish to Elena in AUS OPEN :)

Jan 17th, 2002, 02:32 PM
Well done Lena :)
congrats girl ;)
not very good to watch, just too tense.
Elena ran away with it after taking 1st set, Nastya lost heart.
Go Lena Go !!!!!!!!

6-1 6-2 over Magui Serna!!
Elena was totally dominant
Now the difficult matter of Henin
Jan 19th, 2002, 10:24 AM
Elena will PROBABLY play Henin in the 4th round. I can't see Henin losing to whoever she is playing in the 3rd.
So they'll meet in the 4th I bet!!!

UDACHI ELENA!!!! It's time for another Slam breakthrough.
Jan 21st, 2002, 12:15 AM
Just 4 hours left! Go and win this one Alyona!
Jan 21st, 2002, 01:41 AM
It is time to make a statement. Don't let this chance slip, Alyona!:) Besides, it is time to give a couple of lessons to those cocky Belgians, one by one..:)
Jan 21st, 2002, 04:54 AM
Elena crumbles in the 1st set (6-0 to Henin). The 2nd set has just started.
Lets hope for better.
Jan 21st, 2002, 05:12 AM
Theres a rain delay at the moment so hopefully Elena can get her act together. She's presently 2-1 down in the 2nd set, and Henin has already broken her serve.
It does not look good. (Understatement of the year)!
Jan 21st, 2002, 05:21 AM
Things looked really bad...
Elena just got bageled and is now down a break...
I think the rain delay came at the right time... This will let her regroup herself.... Please do not let it be another repeat of the FED Cup final.
I think she must have been nervous... For the 1st 3 rds, she has been playing at the smaller show courts. This is a sudden change for her to play Rod Laver Arena while Justine is already used to playing on this court for the past few rounds.
FIght Elena! :bounce:

Ys, Elena made a statement. But not the kind you wanted. I think we all know now, that Elena is overmatched talent wise and in mental toughness against top caliber opponents. I'm dissapointed she continues to get whipped in the big matches. Whatever happened to the 2000 version of Elena Dementieva?
It's time for Elena to get a new coach. And develope a plan "B". because plan "A", looking to hit winners on every point isn't working.
Should Elena be happy with being a top 20 player? I don't think so. She certainly doesn't have the talent level of Justine Henin. But Elena is blessed with great size, great power and great speed. But she is only a good player. Nothing more. Elena is underachieving in my eyes. Do you agree?

Jan 29th, 2002, 06:24 PM
UDACHI ELENA! :bounce:
it's not a bad draw she has either...
Jan 29th, 2002, 11:29 PM
Good luck Elena! :D
Jan 30th, 2002, 05:17 AM
All the best Elena! ;)
Jan 30th, 2002, 07:09 AM
I hope Elena does well!!
The TWO players who deserve to win most in Japan are:
Elena D. because she has not yet won a senior tournament since turning pro in '98.
Tanasugarn. not won a senior tournament since turning pro in 91/92.
I hope Elena beats everyone though.
Jan 30th, 2002, 07:47 PM
Good luck against Anna, Elena! :D :D :D
Okay, I admit I think Anna will win this; Elena does not seem to cope well with players with varied games like Anna's. I learned this when she lsot to poor old Conchita!
I am just glad that Elena got a couple of matchs (singles & doubles) under her belt before having to face this tough match. Elena will need luck and a LOT of errors from Anna to win.
Jan 30th, 2002, 08:08 PM
congrats on today's win :)
Best of luck tomorrow v Anna
go Alyona go !!!!
Jan 30th, 2002, 08:29 PM
I'm glad this match is finally here. Elena in straight sets.
Jan 31st, 2002, 07:57 AM
This will be a match to remember.
I think (hope) that Elena wins.
Probably in three sets.

Yes, get on over to Paris early! Better luck there, Elena! :)
Jan 31st, 2002, 09:22 PM
I hope that she does't feel too bad about it. She is intelligent enough to understand that it was nothing but a one tennis match against quality opponent.. Good luck in Paris..:)

I`m afraid it could be a very sore blow to Elena. Her rivalry with Anna is bitter no matter what both players say.
Jan 31st, 2002, 11:13 PM
Unfortunately, many players can beat Elena by using the smart strategy Kournikova used (according to her interview) - just keeping the ball in play. In fact this strategy is often a good one against both these erratic players, and Elena needs to learn to use it too.
She also needs to learn to recognize when her opponent is doing this to her, and turn it against them with some well-timed and well-placed winners.
So much to learn, and so bad a coach!
Jan 31st, 2002, 11:47 PM
Fresh2flash, how do you know their rivalry is bitter?
Feb 1st, 2002, 12:48 AM
I don`t know, I guess ;)
Feb 1st, 2002, 01:32 AM
I don't think it is any worse than getting blown away by Venus at last year IW after what Elena said at prematch interview..
Interestingly, Elena was very good at playing tiebreakers. Not now...
On brighter side, she'll have more time to handle jetlag for Gaz de France..
Feb 1st, 2002, 03:11 AM
How disappointing for Elena.
Nevermind, though. Life goes on.
Elena should get a new and better coach, get to France (I think) early, and relax, not get to worked up and tense.
Her next tourny is in France isn't it???
Who else is playing there??
Feb 1st, 2002, 05:25 AM
While being in Moscow, I was buying all sports magazines I ran into. One of them, Sportlife had a nice set of pictures of Elena..

Hi I'm from Tokyo. I saw Elena D and Nastya and took a pic of them. They were so nice!!!
To my disappointment they lost. But I hope they will win soon.
Ys, did Sportlife give a name of the author of those pics? I am just curious if they did, and I don`t have that issue.
Feb 1st, 2002, 03:16 PM
Mamis, one more question. Did you take this pic before or after Elena lost to Anna?
Feb 1st, 2002, 04:51 PM
fresh .... its more likely to be before she played Anna
cos Anastasia is also there.
Nastya lost on Saturday and would now be in Paris.
Feb 1st, 2002, 04:52 PM
The name they mention is Maxim Makarov.
Feb 1st, 2002, 05:01 PM
Thanks, ys. Stolen again. Those guys do not a have a slightest idea of the copyright.
Feb 1st, 2002, 05:03 PM
Well, Eggy, I just hoped that Elena didn`t take that loss to Elena close to her heart.
Feb 1st, 2002, 06:30 PM
Yes Elena is scheduled to play in Paris, alongside Venus, Monica, Amelie, and Sandrine, to name the top players participating.
Feb 1st, 2002, 06:42 PM
fresh...This pic was taken at Welcome party.
hi eggy I enjoy reading your post everytime.
Nastya watched the match of Elena against Anna yesterday. It's absoultely. So I think nastya is going to next with Elena.
Feb 1st, 2002, 07:53 PM
Hi mamis! Thanks for the info! Nice of Anastasia to stay in town to watch her friend Elena! :)
I forgot to report that Justine Henin :D is also playing in Paris. How could I forget our little JUSTINE!! :(
Feb 1st, 2002, 07:55 PM
she was still in Tokyo on Thurs ??
I hope it doesn't mean she will withdraw from Paris, she should be there today then.
I know she is playing Doha/Dubai for sure.
Feb 1st, 2002, 10:37 PM
But I'm quite disappointed at the way Elena lost this match while serving at 6-5 in the 1st and 3-0 in the 2nd....
Hope she will have a better performance at Paris. ;)
Feb 2nd, 2002, 01:55 AM
Thanks for the photos Ys and Mamis. Do you have more?
Feb 2nd, 2002, 06:04 AM
Does anybody know where to find more pics of Elena in Japan or if her next tourny has an official site or something.
Feb 4th, 2002, 08:10 PM
They actually have a nice Bio of her there.
NASTY draw for Elena, though!
Feb 5th, 2002, 08:43 PM
well done Elena :)
a tough win,. but you did it,
and now good luck in rd 2 v Greta Arn, which should be more comfy, it better be
Feb 5th, 2002, 09:30 PM
Okay, you scraped through that one successfully! Now how about a "6-1, 6-2" story for us next round?
Feb 6th, 2002, 10:05 AM
'6-1 6-2' matches can be very boring. Maybe Elena's trying to give the crowd their moneys worth.
And maybe she's TRYING to give all of us premature heart attacks.
Hmmmm..........you never know.
But well done against Elena Bovina. A hard faught match. A confidence boosting win.
Just don't do anything stupid against Greta Arn, else it would all have been for nothing.
Feb 6th, 2002, 11:22 AM
After Paris, where is Elena's next tourny.
Feb 6th, 2002, 11:56 AM
Scottsdale I heard.
Feb 6th, 2002, 02:38 PM
fresh ....... Elena doesn't play Scottsdale
she is in Acapulco the same week
Find it a bit weird playing on clay just before the two big events in US.
But last year thats where she gained her confidence, hope for more of the same this year and the TITLE
