Banaszek Returns To FWTT
http://m-sharapova.org/gallery/albums/apperances/2011/ESPYS/normal_Maria_Sharapova_2011_ESPY_Awards_26.jpg

San Diego, CA -- Former US Open champion Nadia Banaszek has made a shock return to the FWTT tour, as she's set to compete at this week's Mercury Insurance Open in San Diego. The Belarussian had been as high as #3 in the world, before a shoulder injury looked like it had forced her into an early retirement.

Moderator: Questions for Nadia please...

Q: Nadia, first of all, welcome back. Why did you choose San Diego to make your comeback?
Nadia Banaszek: ''Yeah, thanks. Well, you know, I've been planning this comeback for a little while, and I didn't want to rush back, you know. I wanted to make sure I felt ready, and had gotten my game and also physically gotten back to a level that I was happy with. I would have loved to have been back for Wimbledon, but the timing just wasn't right.''

Q: You haven't played since early 2010, where you where on a losing streak of 5 or 6 consecutive first round losses. Just how much confidence do you have in your game?
Nadia Banaszek: ''Well 2010 was so tough for me. My shoulder was getting worse and worse, and mentally I was just not into tennis anymore. As you said I wasn't having much success, but I think even if I was, I still would have made the decision to stop playing. A tennis court just wasn't the right place for me.''

Q: How is the shoulder now?
Nadia Banaszek: ''You know it's at a point now where I do feel like I have a bit of, you know, confidence to really swing through and not have to worry about it. It's still not 100%, and it's never going to be that again, but it's all about management, and making sure I can get the best out of it, without putting too must pressure and strain on it.''

Q: How different is it coming back onto the tour unranked? Do you feel like your starting all over again?
Nadia Banaszek: ''Oh for sure. *laughs* You know I turned pro back in 2003, and I remember just how difficult it was to climb those rankings, you know. I was playing challengers in the middle of nowhere, just in the hope that I could work my up, and get to the top. So yeah, I do feel like this is my second career in a way, so yeah it's going to be interesting.''

Q: The tour has obviously changed so much, what changes surprise you the most?
Nadia Banaszek: ''You know there's so many new girls out there, you know. I didn't really follow tennis all that much when I was off the tour, so I don't really know any of them. Also, you know, seeing girls like Regla and Elise in qualies with me is so surprising. It looks like the games has really changed.''

Q: If we were to ask you who was the #1 in the world at the moment, would you know?
Nadia Banaszek: '' *laughs* Next question.''

Q: What are your goals for the year?
Nadia Banaszek: ''You know I really haven't set any goals to be honest. I'm just gonna to focus on my game, and trying to improve with every match. And whatever results I have, that's what I'll have.''

Q: You've played throughout so many different era's of FWTT, how much of an advantage do you think that gives you?
Nadia Banaszek: ''Obviously I think it does help me a bit. You know, we've had so many great players over the years who have dominated - Larisa (Ferrer), Ana-Maria (Herrera-Verdasco), Adriana (Gonzalez), Caroline (Whitten), Eva (Sorrenta), you know those are some of the best players I've ever seen. I'm keen to see how these new players stack up against these legends.''

Q: You had quite a few friends on the tour, who are you most looking forward to seeing?
Nadia Banaszek: ''Well, first I have no idea if they are still playing or not *laughs* I've already seen Ella and Elise this week, it was great to see them. It's tough to keep in touch with them when your not playing week in week out, so it was nice to catch up. But not when Elise reminds you that your pretty much a grandma now compared to everyone else. *laughs* ''

Q: Well thanks for your Nadia, and best of luck this week.
Nadia Banaszek: ''Thanks.''

[/center]Interview with Caroline Smith:

Q: Hello Caroline thanks for joining us today.

A: No problem.

Q: How much confidence do you come into San Diego with?

A: Um, I had a really good summer clay season with some notable wins and broke into the top 50 reaching my second semi-final. But 45 minutes away from my home in stanford I had two of the most painful losses ever in three sets. Even though I think I will still carry confidence from earlier.

Q:How do you feel about playing your sister Anna Smith in the first round of qualifying?

A:I mean it's too bad because we both of gotten wins in singles but that can't happen. I am very excited to play doubles with her because she is a doubles specalist and it will be a fun experience.

Q: What round do you aim for here?

A: Um, To qualify and depending on who get for a first round to maybe win a round. I'm not expecting to much of myself here.

Q: About your possible retirement later this year has their been any decisions?

A: I don't think it will happen. I mean after the incident it was really bad with Candela supporters sending my bad letters and death threats. And i'm like "she's the one who attacked me" people. It's just disgusting. But now things are better and I will probably continue playing.

Q: Wow she's a stupid bitch. Well thanks for your time Caroline!

A: (laughs) She really is. No problem.

Singles Results, Qualifying First Round

Alexandra Anastadis def. [1]Tami Lamy-Chappuis 6/1, 6/1
Tami was a bit tired after her surprise run in Stanford last week and Alexandra made quick work of her.

[WC]Berenika Wojnarowska def. [5]Brenda Gaga-Maduga 5/7, 7/6(4), 7/5
We think this may be the first time Brenda has lost her opening match at a tournament - a good win for Berenika.

[2]Regla Torres def. Verena Jameka Starr 6/1, 6/2
Verena made quick work of the Ghanian today to move on to the qualifying match.

[8]Caroline Smith def. Anna Smith 3/6, 7/6(4), 6/1
The younger sister almost upset the older sister before she was finally able to get into her own groove.

[3]Martine Kartincova def. Nadia Banaszek 0/6, 6/2, 7/5
Martine was creamed by the returning Nadia in the first set, but then the Belorussian got tired from lack of play and couldn't close out the match.

Yoona Im def. Lindsay Galbraith 6/1, 7/6(5)
These two newbies played well today, but Yoona was much better on the hard courts of San Diego.

Giuseppina Benedetti def. [4]Lindsay Raymond 0/6, 6/3, 6/3
Giusa had to play qualifying and was unluckily placed against Lindsay, her doubles partner, but came away the winner.

Clair McKrain def. [6]Elise Mesane 6/2, 7/6(1)
Clair was surprised to play in qualifying at her home state event, and drew the strong Elise. She won today in good form but it was nice to see Elise playing well on the court.

Singles Results, Qualifying Round

Alexandra Anastadis def. [WC]Berenika Wojnarowska 6/3, 6/3
Alexandra lost only 8 games today en route to qualifying for the main draw.

[8]Caroline Smith def. [2]Regla Torres 1/6, 7/6(2), 6/1
The American crowd was surprised at how Caroline took it to the well playing Regla.

Yoona Im def. [3]Martine Kartincova 6/1, 1/6, 7/6(2)
Yoona continues her good form by upsetting the third seed and moving to the main draw.

Giuseppina Benedetti def. Clair McKrain 0/6, 6/4, 6/3
An unfortunate draw for both players, but Giusa moves on after this well fought match.

Singles Results, First Round

[WC]Sylvie Bailly def. [1][WC]Ziyi Zianzhi 6/3, 0/6, 6/4
The former #1 vs. the current #1 saw an upset as it was a pleasant surprise to see Sylvie enter this event and have great form.

Harper Johnson def. Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu 6/2, 1/6, 6/4
Harper had the American crowd behind her as she rallied in the third set to knock off the Wimbledon finalist, Vladimirescu.

Athea Kane def. [Q]Alexandra Anastadis 7/6(0), 4/6, 7/5
It's been a while since Athea has won a match and she struggled today against the in-form Greek but moves on.

[7]Jennifer Casanova def. [LL]Regla Torres 7/6(5), 2/6, 6/1
Regla got a second chance but still couldn't compete with Jennifer on the hard courts in America.

[8]Siri Cornetsson def. Marteena Huubere 6/4, 6/4
Siri straight-setted Marteena to move on while Huubere goes back to the drawing board.

Fleri Hingisafrilia def. Ella Felivitch 6/7(2), 7/6(4), 7/6(6)
Fleri was 100% healthy today and it was so nice to see as she and Ella went to the distance in this first round match.

Jookkarae Mensarb def. Rita Cebolla 4/6, 7/6(0), 7/5
The little onion couldn't power her way past Jook and lost in three tight sets.

[Q]Giuseppina Benedetti def. [4]Nthamangela Mbangu 6/7(1), 7/6(3), 7/6(4)
Giusa had to battle through qualifying today and played 9 sets of singles matches, including this three set thriller today in her upset over Nthama.

[3]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. [Q]Yoona Im 7/5, 7/6(7)
This is Ruffy's home event as she has residence in San Diego and one of her favorites. Her local crowd cheered her on in this tight win against the qualifier Yoona.

Kathleen Pryde-Degman def. Yelena Pirilenko 6/2, 0/6, 6/4
Kathleen gets a good first round win and now faces longtime friend and opponent, Ruflina.

Sabine Graf def. Vittoria Perez 2/6, 7/6(4), 6/2
No dramatics from Vittoria today as she came close, but not close enough to taking out Sabine, the German.

[7]Saba Abid def. Anastasia Nemayeva 7/5, 7/5
Saba loves the hard courts and it was evident in today's win where she painted the lines with her accurate ground strokes.

[5]Luna-Willow Bartoli def. [Q]Caroline Smith 6/4, 3/6, 7/6(1)
Caroline was just too tired today to take it out in the end and a refreshed Luna-Willow walks away with the win.

[LL]Martine Kartincova def. Cornelia du Preez 2/6, 7/6(5), 6/2
Martine got a second chance and had a nice upset against the rising South African in a dramatic three setter.

Samantha Soren def. Jane Wong 6/4, 4/6, 7/6(6)
Sam continues to show consistency in the early rounds while Jane came very close to a great first round win.

Daria Afanasyeva def. [2]Pamela Bowden 6/4, 7/6(3)
Daria is capable of these big wins as evident by her run earlier in the year and showed great courage in taking out Pamela.

http://www.brisbaneinternational.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Alicia-Molik-powers-through-a-forehand-during-her-three-set-win-over-Russian-Ekaterina-Makarova.jpg
Jane Wong has been dispatched by Canadian, Samantha Soren in three tight sets today in San Diego,California and moves into the second round.
"I was extremely nervous in the late stages of the final set and my right arm started to get tired so my shots didn't have the pace they usually do and I think that's why it was that close in the end. I just let Jane play her game and it almost cost me the match. Thankfully for me, she missed two easy backhands and I survived! I'll make sure to ice it tonight and not really practice much tomorrow so I can be as fresh as possible for my next match."

Singles Results, Second Round

[WC]Sylvie Bailly def. Harper Johnson 7/6(1), 7/6(5)
The Frenchie is back with another great win today against the home favorite, Harper Johnson.

Athea Kane def. [7]Jennifer Casanova 7/6(5), 6/4
Another American, Jennifer, struggled today in the San Diego sun against Athea in straight sets.

Fleri Hingisafrilia def. [8]Siri Cornetsson 3/6, 7/6(5), 6/3
Fleri is playing epically well here in southern California and gets a huge win against the consistent Siri.

[Q]Giuseppina Benedetti def. Jookkarae Mensarb 3/6, 7/6(1), 6/4
Giusa is now on a four match winning streak, if you include qualifying and this come from behind win against Jook.

[3]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. Kathleen Pryde-Degman 7/5, 7/6(6)
These two friends have a long past with a pretty even head to head as Ruffy gets the edge on this one.

Sabine Graf def. [7]Saba Abid 1/6, 6/4, 6/4
Sabine played very well (after the first set) in upsetting Saba today and sets up the longest current head to head with Ruflina in the quarterfinals.

[5]Luna-Willow Bartoli def. [LL]Martine Kartincova 6/4, 3/6, 6/4
Martine wasn't as lucky today as she was yesterday and fell in a tough match to Luna.

Daria Afanasyeva def. Samantha Soren 6/4, 7/5
Daria is back (as she said herself) and defeats a hot Sam to move on to the quarterfinals.

Doubles Results, First Round

[1]Cornetsson/Johnson def. Gaga-Maduga/Mensarb 4/6, 6/3, 7/6(6)
All four have been eliminated from singles so this was a very important match and you could tell by the scoreline.
