Good start for Sabine, great 1st serve as usual and just too much power for Halep, who isnīt in great shape these days anyway!
In 2nd set she was just too weak over 2nd serve, if there is sth to work on, then it is definitely her 2nd serve , thatīs why she needs a good 1st serve percentage, today she had 53% 1st serves in that is quite good for her, next round against Stosur, will be interesting for sure :)

Stosicki were very routine in the 1st and then their services started to let them down in the 2nd. There was one instance where Bine got broken, then they broke Julia only to have Sam be broken right back. Too many errors and shitty serving did them in in the tiebreak from what I can recall in my tired haze.

Thank you Specter.

The one thing I am worried about is Sabine's serve. When her first serve fires, it's a potent weapon & gets her far, wins her lots of points & matches. But she has to land the damn thing! If Sab's first serve is off, her second serve to my mind is vulnerable.

She's got a good service action as far as I can see, so I wonder if she is trying too hard to serve 125mph rockets all the time. I would rather she increases her 1st serve %age. If that means getting a 1st serve of say 115-120mph more often into her opponent's court, surely that would still win her lots of points, instead of trying to blast one down at 120-125mph & either going long or straight into the net.

The one thing I thought at Wimbledon was that, although obviously she had a great tournament in both singles & doubles, her serve got worse, at least to my eyes! She went from 17 aces vs. Li Na to losing her ball toss for example, & numerous times I remember Sabs had to catch the ball & try again. Don't know if this was/is a factor at Stanford, as I've not had the chance to see her.

However, she is ahead of where she thought she would be, compared to last year. That is good. It is work in progress, & I am sure her & her team are working on it. I don't suppose that she is back, even now, to where she was before her injury troubles.

Her frisbee skills are good though!

She should save the rockets for match points like she did against Li. No need to wear herself down with big serves in non-pressure situations. The best players know to bring their best tennis when it matters most.

Not the best performance from Sabine but really important that she is able to beat players like Radwanska even if she doesnīt play her best tennis! :)
Too many UEs today and her 1st serve percentage was really awful from time to time, especially in 2nd set but great to see that she was able to make the important points, won the first set in the TB and saved all BPs in 3rd set with some great serves!

Title in Birmingham, SF in Wimbledon, SF (or even more) in Stanford, great to see that Sabine finally found some consistency, I hope that she will continue like that, her big first serve really helps her when her game isnt working that great like today from time to time, now against Serena or Sharapova, a match against Serena would be nice for a change

Well we all hoped for better than a 6-1,6-2 loss. Too many UE's, double faults. More fight in the 2nd set but still couldn't win enough of the crucial points.

We are disappointed Sabine once again didn't play well v a big hitting champion but I like to keep things in perspective. A few months ago she was nowhere in the rankings and losing in ITF's. Now her bad matches come in semi finals against Sharapova and S.Williams. She's come along way so she can still be proud of herself. 22W,5L since May. Sometimes I think she is too nice and not ruthless enough, as if she respects the likes of Maria and Serena too much and plays too tight against them.

Sabine has alot to work on but I am proud of her. I look forward to see what her ranking will be by the U.S. Open

As I said , against players like Serena Sabine often just plays bad tennis
2nd serve is too weak, that was clear before and she just made 4 points when she went over 2nd serve, 1st serve percentage in 1st set was terrilbe, again not even 40% and in 2nd set she couldnīt convert her BPs....actually all her weaknesses showed up :p

But nothing bad, I mean, she is almost top 20 and had some great results, she just needs to work hard in future as well to improve and such matches will help her, next time she will already play better against Serena for sure, she just needs to serve well against such players and she didnīt do that here and then she just has no chance....but in general a great tournament again with two goo wins :D

Specter
Jul 31st, 2011, 08:23 AM
It's amazing to see how much of a diamond in the rough she still is, when you think about it. If she gets her flaws under control, she will be very hard to beat. I hope she can gather a team around her in the next few years that will work on making her the complete player I know she can be. She'll likely never be the best mover, but things like a better ball toss, consistent 1st serve, more powerful 2nd serve, net play and raising her concentration for the big points - all those things can be improved drastically with targeted training.

And also, she lost to Serena, not some mug. Almost everyone has been embarrassed by Serena (excluding Bammer, of course ) and I wouldn't even say she lost because Ree played too well, but because she didn't play her best or even her passable tennis. There's a lot of room for improvement the next time they meet.

joy division
Jul 31st, 2011, 09:50 AM
Didnīt see the match, so I just can rely on the comments here on TF.
For now Sabine seems to be easy meat for players like Serena and Maria.
If they play on a high level, Sabine gets very uncomfortable, looses the confidence in her game, and then the show is over very quickly.
It`s a question experience and maturity, that she is able to put her best on the court against players of this level, and then the story might come to another end.
By the way, I think, there are not many players left on the tour, who can treat her like these two.

As many others here say, it`s really astonishing, how she already can dominate many Top players, even on average days, on different surfaces. She progresses really well.
If she stays healthy, it will be just a matter of time, to see her in the Top 10.

Sure, Kimiko or Gise will be tricky, but other than that ... especially if Domi might pull out or isn't 100%, this should be a very doable road to the quarters.

Strong on first serve as always but she also won 71% over 2nd serve, which is great for Sabine, no break for Arn here, seems like it was a really good performance, Arn was injured before but still one of the stronger qualifiers here!

of course over, GSM Zvonareva, Sabine can only blame herself for that defeat, too many chances which she didnt use, a shame that this happened again, thought that she would be able to handle such situations better now after her latest success!
Good to see at least that she is obviously able to beat the top players although there are many things which she has to improve!
Fitness could be better, already some problems again although she only played two tournaments in a row now, not able to take her chances and her serve is too inconsistent (1st serve % also too low in general) and yet she is almost top 20, so if she keeps improving she will definitely hard too beat but right now she still has to work and learn a lot...still another good tournament for her with 3 wins, now one week off , I hope she uses that time well!

What really drives me crazy is that Sabine would work so hard to earn a break point then gets a second serve from Bepa only to dump it to the bottom of net or hit it 2 ft. long.

She really needs to improve her return of serve.

I think some people are a little bit too critical.
I think, apart from the first set, she has played a solid match, especially when you consider that she and her father were thinking about retiring after first set because of physical problems..
Yeah, she made some too many errors and didn't take her chances, but it wasn't terrible and you can't expect her to beat topplayer after topplayer. This tournament was another good one after that she will end up with a new career high. :)

Now she can rest a week and hopefully build on that.

I disagree! :p
No one was too criticial here and no one said that she played terrible, San Diego was another good tournament for her and great to see that she is close to top 20, amazing you just have to talk about her problem of not taking chances and thatīs the only thing we did, having a first set percentage of around 40% most of the time and wasting a 0-40 lead on Zvonarevaīs serve with some disgusting UEs is just really really annoying, especially as this didnīt happen for the first time and if she wants to take another step forward she will have to work on that...beside that it is often that Sabine has physical problems when she played a few matches in a row on a high level, so that is also sth she needs to work on and of course...and btw, she didnt beat any topplayer here in San Diego, but showed that she is much more consistent already than before as beating players like Arn, Date und Co, isnīt a problem anymore, even when she doesnīt play her best :)

Yaeh, but it's her game to play with risk. Of course it's frustrating when she's doing all those errors on BPs, but she also won this kind of matches in the last couple of months. So it's not like she hasn't improved. But as I said you can't expect her to win all these tight matches, it's okay to lose some of them.

And isn't it amazing she can almost beat the world No. 3 with such a bad 1st serve percentage? ;) Of course she has to serve more consistently if she wants to go to the very top, but as of now it's allrigt to have such matches. She's No. 21, alomost nothing to defend all year so this is not the end yet. She's on the right track and I'm sure she knows that she has to work on certain things. But it will take some time to fix the problems with the first serve % and fitness (although I think she was okay yesterday, no comparision to the French)... so we should be a little patient with her.

well, nobody said that she isnīt on the right track, but you also have to talk about the weaknesses in her game, I mean, there are enough people here who donīt talk about negative things, so I donīt understand why you immediately get attacked when you mention a few bad things after a defeat :p
And I already said that in my posts before that it is amazing that Sabine almost beats all top players although she obviously has some things to improve...she canīt win all tight matches, that is right, but I still say that she has to win such matches but she improved obviously...I agree, first serve and fitness are the two "main" problem, a better ( more consistent) serve would also help her to be more confident, also she should improve her net play...but of course, she will be top 20 soon and you still can improve so many things, that is not a bad thing at all  :p

I'm Bine's fan from Canada since I saw her playing challenger in Toronto few years ago. It was funny to follow her way...many nice comments and sometime few stupid opinions...

If you use stats just do it obiective, pls! Otherwise you are on wrong place...
Listen: Bine lost at RG because the body didn't get enough energy after swich form normal food to "gluten free" food (was to read on internet and was also a big discuss on tv). Do you know what mean "gluten free food"? I think you don't... Just read about or ask people who have experience with.
If you so big statistic fan just check Bine's schedule after RG: Birmingham (title), Wimby (semis single + final double), Stanford (semis + playing double), Carlsbad (quarters) = 19 singles and 7 doubles - all high level matches... Could you imagine how is the energy level after this? Are you thinking sirious about improve fitnes during this time??? Normal people (no "experts") just know the "battery" shold be like empty...
One more thing: did you see on tv tape on Bine's left leg?
Did you heare what her dad said after 1st set? Just try to play perfect serv with pain in your right leg and we will see your best serv percentage... may be you can if you lefthanded...
Just delicate suggestion: before you give your "hight quality comments" here please check internet for more information (twitter, facebook or, or...).
Bine is not playing Toronto and it looks like she take few days off. Please don't expect great fitnes in Cinci... is not really enough time for recovery...
By the way don't forget simple facts: Bine was wta 217 on March 31st and August 8th she will be wta 21...unbelivable!!!

people like you are the best, stalking the board and then suddenly appear when someone says sth about their biggest fave, when they actually have no clue at all, first thing is that I am not stupid and that I know of course what gluten free is, I am not an idiot, thanks but maybe you also know that Sabine said it after the match that she had to switch to gluten free food and not before the match, so I couldnīt know obviously that she had to deal with that problem! And where did I say that I expect her to improve her fitness immediately? I never said that, I just said that she has to improve that, as Sabine is playing a normal schedule, not too much, not too less but obviously it gets more intense when you have more matches against top players, just like Sabine is having it right now...and about her service percentage, just check her matches, her serve percentage is a bit too low in general, doesnīt matter if she is slightly injured or not, so also sth she can work on..of course, she wonīt fix all those things, otherwise she would be perfect player, but there is always sth you can work on, but I donīt expect her to be robot, that is totally bullshit....if you canīt live with my comments, then just donīt read it but I am actually sick of those "tennis" fans, who often actually arenīt tennis fans , they are just fans of the person, getting obsessed with someone and then are not objective anymore ..and about schedule, I mean, 3 weeks break after Wimbledon? that should be enough to reload batteries for everyone..and I am not complaining, Sabine was still quite fit, did a good job , just there is still some space to improve and you might read it again, I said it many times that I am surprised how Sabine is doing these days, absolutely great to see...but I am not sorry for it that I also mention negative things, especially when I am in disappointed mood, after my favourite player lost in the middle of the night after leading 32* 40-0...thanks :wavey:

Please don't expect great fitnes in Cinci... is not really enough time for recovery...

Why shouldn't we? A week off is plenty of time, and she's not really injured. Just look at Aga today.... She said she was 50/50 on playing the semi vs. Petkovic (shoulder), but won that match and then played the match of her life for the championship. This coming after she played a 2+ hour match last week against Sabine.

Do we hear Sabine making excuses? No. She was hurting -- physically and emotionally -- against Bepa and yet she played her best tennis in the second set, even as her serve failed her. She's a professional athlete, and it's her job to make sure she's fit to win matches -- or find a way to win in spite of poor fitness. We've seen Serena and other big servers on both tours perform the latter; why not Sabine?

Cincinnati

[3] Victoria Azarenka vs BYE
Sabine Lisicki vs Shahar Peer
Sloane Stephens vs Sara Errani
Gisela Dulko vs [16] Shuai Peng

Good first round here, Peer is not really in good shape and should be beatable anyway, as long as Sabine doesnīt make too many UEs!

Possible 2nd round against Azarenka, reminds me a bit of the Sabine vs. Vera match-up
In previous two meetings Sabine actually had all chances to win but couldnīt take her chances and wasted big leads in both matches, I hope this time she can turn it around...but she has to beat Peer first, anything else would be a bonus of course but great chances to go really far if she can beat Azarenka....

If Sabine can beat Vika, she has a great chance to make the final. But Vika is a tough match-up for her -- she will crush Sabine's weak second serves, beat her from the baseline, and force lots of errors. Sabine will have to play her very best to win.

LightsOut!

If Sabine believes in herself, there is NOBODY ahead of her in the rankings that she should be afraid of! Just look at all the seeded players that tumbled out in Toronto! I don't see much difference in their game compared to Sabine's! And Sabine has got her weapons, if she backs herself!

Vika looked vulnerable yesterday, so I think Sabine will win if she plays well in Round 1. Her drop shots probably won't be effective, but she should have a lot of opportunities to attack Vika's weak serve. And Sabine can't possibly serve any worse than she did against Vera.

Vika looked vulnerable because Serena was playing amazing tennis. I think that Vika has the consistency and strong shots to hurt Lisicki. It depends on how Lisicki's serve is and whether she continues to spray balls everywhere though.

I'm a fan of Lisicki, and I have never posted here... Ironic.

Here goes my first.

I think that she has a legitimate chance against Vika, but it really does depend on the level of belief she has in herself/how she plays in round one. She is a VERY confident player when she is at her best, and although she has... Let's face it, been very dismal against some of the top players recently, she does have the goods to beat them. She still has to beat Peer, though... And although Peer may not have the best weapons, she can flat out wear you down if you're not ready for her. I expect her to beat Peer... And, depending on how well she does in that match, I'll size up her chances.

Still... Like I said, her chances are pretty good.

Well, there's definitely tennis at 17:00 (http://tv.eurosport.de/tvhome.shtml) and unless ES will show ATP, it would have to be Bine's match, right? Unless they don't have cameras on Court 3, but on another of the WTA courts.

Maybe someone has some more info on that. I'm afraid of getting my hopes up.

ES commentators were right, Sabine needs to adjust her game when she is mishitting so much. Adjusting at 0-5 down second set is way too late though. She didn't deserve to do the comeback, Peer just choked. Horrible, horrible performance.

Not really understandable to me, Sabine plays horrible, then at 05 starts to play a bit better at least, Peer pretty average and weaponless as usual cant take her chances, Lisicki even gets the 65 lead just to play a horrible TB again...dont know how many girls come back from 05 to 65 just to lose 67, most would win the set then at least 75 but today just was a bad day for Sabine, nothing worked really, no confidence, no serve, footwork was bad and she just wasnīt able to change anything, just as it was almost too late she played a bit better and that was enough for Peer, so she actually should never lose such a match as even an average performance would be enough to win such a match but as I said, Sabine just needs to find a Plan B in her matches faster and she is often hopeless when her serve doesnt work as then her whole game falls apart...good fight at least, from 05 to 65, didnt expect that, I just hope that she learns from this match and that she is able to win some matches in Dallas, would be important before NY..
