Johnson Captures Second Title of Season in Stanford
Stanford, California - American Harper Johnson rallied from a disastrous first set whitewash to upend a resurgent Tamy-Lamy Chappuis 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. The win propels Johnson back into the world's top ten and places her as a real contender at this year's United States Open.
The victory looked all but certain after the first set, which Chappuis took in just 17 minutes, surrounding just 9 points. Johnson found her form early in the second set, holding at love in each of her first two services games of the set. However, at 4-5, 15-30, Johnson was forced to dig deep to stay level with Chappuis. That point, which lasted over a minute and included 94 strokes, ended up going Johnson's way when she sent a pinpoint accurate topspin lob over Chappuis at the net, landing just on the baseline. Chappuis was never the same player after that point, going on to lose the next five games and put up little resistance against Johnson, who began dictating play with heavy forehand winners and 8 aces in the final set alone.
Johnson will continue her summer hardcourt season next week in San Diego where she faces Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu in the opening round.
