The ITF has launched a new Fed Cup Nations Ranking to allow nations to see how they compare with other nations in the competition.New Fed Cup champion nation Slovak Republic head the table with 1125 points more than Spain whom they beat in last weekend ’s 2002 Final.
The position of the top 16 nations in the Fed Cup Nations Ranking reflects their World Group status.Slovenia and Colombia are in 12th and 14th position respectively. Colombia is returning to the 2003 World Group after a nine year absence while relatively new Fed Cup nation Slovenia joins the elite group for the first time. The 2003 World Group first round begins on 26-27 April.
The ITF Fed Cup Nations Ranking will be published following every Fed Cup World Group round. After each round, points from the same round for three previous years will be discounted as per the description on the second page of this document.
The ITF Fed Cup Nations Ranking will be used as one of the primary criteria for seeding at all levels of the Fed Cup competition. The ITF ’s Fed Cup Committee will also use the following criteria when making their seeding decision: the ranking of players likely to participate;experience on different surfaces; experience in doubles and any other pertinent criteria.
