Q is for Qualifier
Samantha Soren has qualified for the Main Draw in Bad Gastein after winning two matches in 10 hours on the clay courts and in humid temperatures.
Starting at 10h, Soren took to the court and 206 minutes later she left the court with a win over Alexandra Anastadis, 7-5 in the third set to advance her to the final round of qualifying. Four hours later, the Canadian was told to go to Court 1 and face off against Yanet Mori-Tu. It didn't get any easier for the #1 seed in qualifying. After more than 3 hours of play and numerous breaks of serve. Samantha Soren qualified for the main draw by winning a marathon of a match, 7-6 5-7 7-6.
"First off, I was surprised that I had to even play in the qualies after winning in Holland and making the Wimbledon quarters. I had to get over that and then maek sure I proved that I am better than a qualifying draw player any day. I did struggle, but this is clay and a win is a win. I don't have huge expectations now, especially because I face a a tough player in the 1st round. We'll see what happens."
Samantha will have to drag herself out of bed Thursday to play her 1st round match on Court 2 today.

Good Gastein

A victorious yell was all you need to hear at the end of the 1st round match between Samantha Soren and Pamela Bowden, to know who was the winner.
The Swedish born Canadian has been on a run of good form for the past month and her confidence showed in the crucial stages of the 3rd set against the 5th seeded Bowden. When Sam was serving at 4-4 15-30, Soren served an ace out wide then Bowden missed two straight returns. Bowden grew tired in the 10th game in the 3rd set and therefore couldn't run up to Soren's dropshots and it proved to be the final straw for the Dutch woman.
The Qualifier won the match 4-6 7-6 6-4 and now faces Ruflina Taliajmisfo?po tomorrow in the quarter finals.
"Ruflina Talia... Ruffy has become a good friend of mine in the past year and there will be no hard feelings after or during the match. She knows I need the win more than her so I'm sure she'll know what to do..."

Winning in Pink

The dusty red surface has been kind this week to Samantha Soren as she has recorded her fourth straight victory on the Austrian clay courts.
In her quarter final match against the 4th ranked player in the world, Soren came out playing a patient game and it worked when she won the 1st set. In the second set, Taliamanosoko started to play more aggressive and Soren looked baffled as to what to do. The final set was clear sailing for the Canadian as she has guaranteed herself another semi final.
"I'm obviously happy with this result. I felt that I could beat Ruffy because I have been beating seeded players in my previous tournaments, even last week even though I lost early. I'm just looking towards tomorrow now and I hope I can beat Regla. I cannot take her lightly"
Regla Torres is her next opponent. The wildcard entrant against a Qualifier. What an unlikely semi final.

Regla Torres into semis

Spanish player Regla Torres stormed into her second tournament semifinal of the last two weeks as she extends her clay court winning streak to six.

The wildcard entrant took just under two hours to eliminate fellow wildcard Jessamine Minella 6-1 1-6 7-5.

"It was a tough final set but I'm just glad that I had that extra confidence and experience to push me through," Torres said.

She will now face qualifier Samantha Soren who is on a roll and has just beaten the highly ranked Ruflina Taliamanosoko.

"She's playing great tennis, it's going to be a tough match," Torres said. The pair have met several times in the past.

Jennifer Casanova into semifinals; happy about season

Jennifer Casanova can't be happier about the 2011 FWTT Season, considering the dissapointments she had during 2010, the year where she was the defending champion at the French Open.

"It's been such a great season already. You know, there's not a lot what I can be frustrated about. I had a fantastic start into the season, winning in Auckland. It was great as well to have such a wonderful start together with Ruffy, because we didn't really know how it would be together on the doubles court. But winning in Auckland gave us confidence, which really helped us for the upcoming months.[Casanova and her won several titles in doubles, including Doha and the French Open]. Even if we had some tough lossed lately, I'm sure we'll get back in grooce for the hardcourt season."

In the first part of the 2011 season, Casanova showed what's the difference between her and the player she was in 2010: consistensy.

"I think I was pretty consistent in my results and only had a few first round losses and that really helped me to get back some of the confidence I had after my win at the French Open in 2009. Winning in Madrid and two weeks later in Straßbourg was simply amazing. I always considered Hardcourts as my best surface, but on Clay, everything seems to come together for me. Of course, winning the French Open in doubles together with Ruffy was just the icing on the cake. We both have a huge connection with this certain tournament, so it was such a special moment and of coure, it was our first GS title together."

Despite her consistent results, there are some more goals she would like to reach in the second part of the season.

"I'm really not satisfied with my GS results. I was so dissapointed after my Wimbledon loss, I was crying in the locker room. Daria played a good match, but I had my chances. To go out so early in a GS is always tough. And of course it was something different not to have Ruffy partnering me in doubles. [Ruflina Talimanosoko and Paula Masterton, her former doubles partner who is playing her last season agreed to partner each other for a couple of tournaments]. But they were the defending champions, so that was something different. I quickly found a great partner in Mbangue and we got a long very well on the courts."

"I'm looking forward to the US hardcourt season. I'd love to win a big title there and have a good result at my home slam. And being back in the top 10 in both singles and doubles, there is my goal to reach the YEC. But that's still a long way to go and there are so many great players out there. I think it has changed over the years, it gets more and more difficult to have good results with many great players, newcomers and veterans playing the game. Pamela winning back-to-back GS titles, Harper Johnson reaching another GS final, Soren being very consistent this season just to name a few of them....."

"Another thing, which is still far away, are the Olympics and Fed Cup. Of course, grass is not my favourite surface, but I think that the USA has a great chance to win some medals there. I haven't talked to Harper Johnson yet, but it would be nice to partner her in doubles and of course, to get the USA back in World Group No 1. And we have some great upcoming players back in the states and I'm looking forward to see them climbing up the rankings."

Jennifer Casanova is currently playing at the claycourt tournament in Bad Gastein, Austria. She reached the semifnals in singles and will play Cornelia du Preez, who she already played two times this season, as their head-to-head is tied 1-1 with Casanova winning their last match in Monterrey, Mexico on Hardcourts.

Photo Finish

It all came down to a final set tie-break to decide who would play in the Bad Gastein final against Jennifer Casanova. Soren looked visibly tired throughout the final set but her serve saved her multiple times but it caught up with her in the tie-break as at 6-6, she looked like she had run a mile too far and lost the next two points with backhand errors to give Regla Torres the match and a spot in the championship final.
"Regla was on her game right from the first game, that was when I knew I had a battle on my hands and I guess the pressure Torres' game put on mine is what made me mentally then physically tired. I'm going to have to recover if I'm going to play Baku. We'll see what happens."

Regla Torres court-side after her semifinal win: "Samantha played a great match. It was such a tough match. I'm just glad I was able to win the last couple of points. Really there wasn't a lot in it. I'm just happy to be able to continue my streak and keep playing well. I think tomorrow will be even tougher."

An Austro-Hungarian double for Regla Torres

Bad Gastein, Austria - Regla Torres today won a thrilling three-set match over No. 4 seed Jennifer Casanova 6-7 7-6 7-6 to take her second tour title of the year.

Casanova, who has never beaten Torres in previous four meetings, looked calmer and more determined today than before. She was aiming for her fourth title of the year today but fell short.

In the crucial stages of the second set, Casanova held four match points but wasn't able to capitalise. Nerves played a factor and no doubt her inability to beat Torres in previous matches played in her mind.

After taking the second set on her second set point, Torres looked to be more in control of the match in the third set as she led all the way including in the tiebreak.

Casanova never gave up however, she knew that her chance of capturing the match slipped with those match points in the second set.

The win marked back-to-back tour victories for Torres for the first time since 2008. The win more special for her as her coach, a history buff rejoiced in her achieving a unique "Austro-Hungarian" double (as Austria and Hungary were once joined as nations in a personal union).

Regla Torres is right now on one of the hottest match winning streaks on tour for the year with eight wins behind the likes of Ruflina Taliamanosoko and Ziyi Zianzhi with 11 match streaks at different times in the year.

The Spanish star is definitely on the rise again to her best level since the 2008 and early 2009 period that saw her capture up to eight tournaments over the two-season period.

The win gives Torres her career No. 18 tournament and No. 13 overall on clay courts.

The win would move Torres (current world No. 50) just a few places up in the rankings. But somehow rankings is the least of the worries for Torres if she continues to play this way.
