View Full Version : WG II Playoff: Japan vs Argentina

The ITF announced on 21 March that, due to the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, this tie would be postponed until 16-17 July.

“In light of these dreadful and exceptional circumstances, we felt it was important to give the JTA the opportunity still to host the tie and for Fed Cup to play its very small part in the healing process of a nation. We are grateful to both nations, Japan and Argentina, for their cooperation," said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti.

Argentina is looking to win a fourth consecutive tie against Japan. The two nations are level with three wins each in previous match-ups, but it is the South American side which has had the best of recent clashes.

Both nations earned their place in the World Group II play-offs following successful zonal campaigns. Argentina is looking to bounce straight back into World Group II after being relegated by Canada at the same stage of the competition last year.

Japan dropped out of World Group II in 2009 and failed to earn immediate promotion after losing to Slovenia in last year’s World Group II play-offs.

I guess it might be 5-0 for Japan. It will be great for the country to have a win at home.

This is the one Dulko should be playing, rather than the Americas Zone I :p

Agree . The argie lineup is just... :help:
I really expected Furlanetto and Salut would be playing, even if they arrived late and are exhausted. Irigoyen and Auroux don't have the game to play in carpet. This will be something painful to watch.

Expected Aran to be in singles, since she´s the only one that has won 4 matches in a tourney lately, but still, i already see a series vs. Canada, between Marino and Dulko, and Ormaechea and Dubois.

2nd rubber now..........Morita v Auroux

Never heard of Auroux before.........

Well...where do i begin? The match was obviously between two players that are in opposite moments of their carrerrs. While Doi is an up and coming top 100 level player, Mery is searching a way to come back to her best.
The match was simply dominated by Doi´s strenght. She may not be the tallest player on Tour, but she sure has a weapon on her drive. The speed was simply tooo much for Mery, who was never able to find either accurancy when she tried to be aggresive or deep shots. That and what FERKLE said about she couldn´t do anything on her backhand.
Doi is definitely a hardcourter. Her game suits a lote more in that surface. Maybe on clay would have been different. But back when Mery was close to be in the top 150 and having wins.

Plus they are playing indoors, on a really hot weather :help:. Mery couldn´t keep the ice out of her neck because of this. Morita is already 2-0 up on the second match.
