So now that we have a video thread for Julia I thought it would be a good start to collect all videos that were already posted by different people in other threads and post it here. So all the credit to the original poster, I'm just the one who moves the videos to this thread.

There was a short report today in German breakfast TV about Julia's match:

http://www.zdf.de/ZDFmediathek/content/1405918 (viewable until Aug 16th)

(She said most important of winning against Jankovic in 2 sets was a mental consistency, which can give her much confidence now.)

Also Germany's 2nd and 3rd most viewed news shows (RTL, ZDF) have shown pictures of her win. This is quite notable, as there was virtually no tennis in major TV channels in Germany besides the GS's until this year. And Julia complained about the lack of appreciation for tennis players in Germany in an interview at the start of the year.

CillyUltra, I loved the angle on that youtube vid. I always wish they would show more points from a low angle. It's more like playing.

And thanks to everyone for posting.

Her grunt seems to change a lot. Here in Auckland she had this cute soft high sound in some of her matches.

I'm afraid it's not really worth it to make highlights from it. It's in sync but not clear and you have to concentrate to follow the ball. I would say it's only worth downloading if you really want to see the flow of the match and analyse it, as I always want to with Julia's matches. mk27 has uploaded some wonderfully clear videos (great job on all of them by the way!) but he was not working with a clear source here.

For me, it's still useful to compare the conditions and her play with the way she played against Serena. You will also be able to hear Julia's coaching timeout, (except I can't understand it). But you won't be able to watch it purely as enjoyable "entertainment", like you could with her matches against Caro this year, for instance.

Ah okay I see, thanks for the feedback. :) And thanks for uploading yet again mk27, much appreciated!

Thanks very much for your immediate search, and posting this for us.
The clips are very short.
But it`s obvious, that she didn`t play her best tennis in the last game of the match.
She seemed to be exhausted and frustrated from the permanent ups and downs in her game until this moment.
Bad body language and movement and therefore UEs on backhand and forehand, and so the match went by.
Not nice to see, but, unlucky, this is still typical for Julia.

^^Thanks for the videos. As I expected, she was "frozen" again. The aggressiveness from last week was all gone and Jie seemed to always have the initiative. She probably stepped it up in the second set, but you don't really see it from that game. Indeed, still typical, last week was just an exception. But maybe there are still some fitness problems, maybe she can't be lively on a regular basis. I mean, I hope that's it and it would get better because she probably really is working hard. If it's just a mental problem, it might never get better.

I agree. It's not so much that she doesn't wait for the right ball, it's more that she tends to make a little execution error when she kills, either late at contact or not quite getting the body position or footwork accurate enough. She needs to focus her energy on getting the perfect setup for every kill shot.

But from what I heard she was pretty good today. I didn't see it but it seems plenty of people were impressed.

Thanks for the videos guys.

So I made a translation of that interview on Eurosport. At some points it's a bit clumsy, but I am too lazy to make it more accurate, sorry ;)

I: It was a nervous start but you found your game pretty soon.

J: Yes, I lost against her in Bad Gastein and when you go out on court you really want to to win, but it's always pretty tight at the beginning. She is a very solid player who doesn't make many mistakes. And I simply made too many mistakes at the beginning until I finally found my game.

I: You played very aggressively. Was that the reason why you won? Because the last two times you lost against her.

J: Actually my game is always pretty aggressive. I just have to learn to control it [literally: "to control the balls"] and to wait for the right balls. This wasn't the case at the beginning of the match, but, thank god, after that I was able to do it.

I: You seem to be incredibly fit [no pun intended]. Your legs are so amazing... [she is Austrian, I have no clue what or if she says anything after "amazing". Actually she says "wahnsinnig" and that's not really translatable in this context] Did you change anything during your preparation?

J: Well, since I work with Sascha Nensel the last two years everything changed a little bit. I became fitter, lost weight [kilos] and I simply move better now. Thus I've got a better feeling for my game now then before.

I: You are in the third round for the first time. What does that mean to you?

Yeah, it's the fourth time this year I reached the third round. So that's pretty consistent and I'm glad about that. But of course, I want to reach the fourth round this time. However, every round is tough, but I'm looking forward to it.

Probably there is also something lost in translation. My impression is that she is pretty calm and relaxed. She knows that she can count on her game at the moment. I'm quite sure she is confident, but she would never openly show this. Remember, she's the northern german type: reserved, humble (sometimes at least), not a friend of strong words, etc..

Ok, here is another one: Last games of the 2nd set in the semi-final in madrid against azarenka:

hWihuj8qUr8

I like this vid for two reasons:

1. In no other video I've seen by now Julia looks more beautiful (just my opinion). The reason for that could be that she is pissed here. Because there is just nothing more beautiful than a feisty Julia (again just my opinion). To show you what I mean, just look at the 18 seconds between minute 03:33 and 03:51. Special recommendation: Stop at 03:41.

She's even more pissed between 05:09 and 05:14 and as a consequence even more beautiful. By the way I can understand Julias anger here, for that ball was definitely in. But that doesn't really matter anymore.

2. The vid provides some insight into how Julia and Sascha interact with eachother at a crucial stage of a match. At 06:37 Sascha finally makes his way down to the court. Julia already awaited him and says angrily to him: "Would be nice if you payed attention when I make a sign." Sascha tries to ease the tension with a jocular remark before he then tries to buoy her up, saying that the UEs doesn't matter and that's only important for him to see that she is able to compete with Azarenka. He also gives her some advice how she could improve her game. He basically says here that she should lean slightly more forward in order to generate more pressure. Julia reacts with a facial expression which apparently supposed to mean: "talk is cheap". Sascha in turn says: "I know it's hard. But it's the only advice I can give you". As he sees Julias eye-rolling he says: "And there's no reason to get huffy here. No reason at all." Julia responds with a defiant "Doch" meaning "Yes, there is" [in fact this is a really childish reaction from her]. And Sascha again: "No, there is not." At the end when Julia got up he finally says to her: "Come on, try to enjoy it. It's not lost yet."

Translation/Summary? Anyone? :)

- Peng is very solid; I made too many mistakes
- Peng always plays the same tempo, takes every ball early
- I wanted to play the angles + high balls to make her move, which worked sometimes, but I forgot to do that in stretches and I also didn't move as well as usual
- my back is hurt and impedes certain movements, like rotation, but that's neither the explanation nor an excuse for the loss
- next up is doubles here and then I'm off to Asia

I guess she is convinced that even with an injury she should be good enough to win a match like this. I'm sure Petko's recent performance against Jie played a big part in that kind of thinking.

Note that I am using orbit downloader to download the file. I only used URL Snooper to find the address. Also make sure when you right click the address to click "copy link location" in order to get the full, non-truncated address.

URL snooper also suggests another address. The first one, which I posted above, is a windows media file. This second one is a Realmedia file. Maybe that will work on Linux? You can watch the match in the VOD section (although skipping forward doesn't seem to work well for me, if I try to skip to a different part it just keeps buffering for me, so you may have to watch it as if it was live) here: http://hansolopen.cafe24.com/korea/pop_tv_02.html?Search_string=&Game_code=46&groups=1

The site uses silverlight. Pausing and playing does work for me.

Since they use windows silverlight that might be part of the problem for a linux user. Not sure.

Hmm. I wonder if we can do anything about that.

I have no real familiarity with the Linux system, unfortunately, so I'm not sure. I'm also not sure what the problem is... you cannot start the download, or you cannot play the file?

Well, I guess silverlight is indeed the problem. It only works on Windows. There is an alternative plug-in for Linux, but it is very crush prone. It only works for a few seconds.

I guess this means you cannot watch the highlights or the VOD which I posted as a silverlight stream, but if you actually managed to get the file downloaded to your computer I think it would play fine. It's just a normal WMV file once it's downloaded.

What happens when you right click and try to "save link as" for the wmv address I posted?

Ok Skoo, this is officially my favourite vid of her, pure hotness :hearts::worship:

By the way, her lips cleary formed the words "Meine Fresse", which cannot be accurately translated into English (lit. "my gob"), but it means something like "Jesus Christ", "Bugger me", "I'll be damned". Pretty rude and common expression in German :)

Howard, could you please put your Snooper to work? :) (doesn't work for me)

Using URL Snooper, I get the address: http://61.110.244.83/naverucc/3000/67/129556667.mp4?key=MjYxMjYxMDM0MTE0NjQ2OTMxMTAzMjQ3 MDEzNjEuMTEwLjI0NC44MzAzMS9uYXZlcnVjYy8zMDAwLzY3Lz EyOTU1NjY2Ny5tcDQzMTk2MzE5NDAwNWZtczY0MjMxMzE0NG5h dmVyMDAwMDAwMDMxODA0NTgxNA==&_metahint_fn=/3000/781752770102746.mp4&in_out_flag=0]]

I am currently using Orbit Downloader to download this mp4. It's downloading rather slowly. The file is 9.76 MB. However, this address has a key in it (you see the ?key part just after the mp4). Therefore, I am not totally sure that this address will work for other people. Perhaps someone can try it and find out.

Edit:

Ah, now I'm running into a second problem. I think the access key runs out before I can finish downloading the file. I wonder if I can do anything about this...

Okay. The access key is temporary. So after a while the download stops completely (gets stuck in an endless cycle of "close link- create link" and if you pause and start the download again it gives you a "HTTP/1.0 403 Forbidden" error. But I simply refresh the browser page (the link posted by Dispeker) and try to play the file again. URL Snooper identifies a new address with a new access key.

For instance, right now I am using: http://118.107.173.141/naverucc/3000/67/129556667.mp4?key=MjYxMjYxMDM0MTE0ODc2NTMxMTAzMjQ3 MDE1MTE4LjEwNy4xNzMuMTQxMDMxL25hdmVydWNjLzMwMDAvNj cvMTI5NTU2NjY3Lm1wNDMxOTgzMTk0MDA1Zm1zNjQzMjMwMzE0 Nm5hdmVyMDAwMDAwMDMxODAyMTIwNw==&_metahint_fn=/3000/781752770102746.mp4&in_out_flag=0]]

I then right click on the file in Orbit downloader and choose Edit Property. I go to the Mirror tab and add this new address as a mirror. Other download managers probably have this kind of function available too. Then the download resumes for a while. By repeating this I should be able to download the video, eventually, I think. It's pretty slow going.

I wish I knew a better way of doing this. I'm sure some tech whiz can design a download program that can do this kind of thing automatically.

Yes, it doesn't work, it says forbidden. If you were downloading with Orbit and closed the page after it started, I don't think that was the problem, but who knows. Anyway, if you manage to download it, perhaps you can upload it elsewhere :)

After having a bit of a nap, I've managed to download it and watch it. I had to change the download URL 13 times for a 9.76MB file :tape:. It was also only downloading at about 3kb/s for me :o. It is a slightly stretched video, so I watched it with VLC media player and adjusted the video aspect to 16:9.

Well, that's the good news. I've watched it. It's 1:36, in Seoul of course. It's in what seems to be a parking lot that has been arranged with seats and tables to become an area for players to warm up or relax. In the corner I can see Eleni Daniilidou, wearing a white headband. There are possibly some other players but they are not very clearly visible. Julia is listening to music on earphones (an ipod, I presume) and she starts by skipping sideways while twisting side to side, the same warm up exercise I watched Marta Domachowska do in Auckland a couple of years ago. Alas, I have to admit that Julia actually does the exercise with less coordination than Marta did. Then she does a few other things, running backwards alternating with running forwards, followed by standing one leg dynamic stretches with a few jogging steps in between- straight leg kicks, high knees with hand grab and a little tug (at this point her earphone falls out and she stops to put it back in), dynamic outside hip stretch, quad stretch, squats with her hands on her knees. At the end you can see Eleni practicing her forehand swing.

The bad news: I have no experience in uploading videos. So you'll have to give me a few days (probably I'll have some free time this weekend) to figure it out. Regular uploaders like mk27 may feel free to PM me with some ideas or advice. I would like to be able to upload it somewhere free, and also somewhere relatively anonymous. I was considering megaupload, turbo image hosting, PIC true push, as regards the advice in this article- http://www.techmaish.com/upload-photosimagesvideos-without-registration-or-anonymously/- but I'm open to other suggestions.

Well, I'm glad I got to see the vid. I think her warmup is kind of cute. Her squatting exercise looks a wee bit awkward, the way she does it. And importantly, we in Julia's forum are increasing our abilities to download and share videos and pics. No media shall escape us! I myself learnt quite a bit. I have never had to use the mirror function in Orbit before. Next step- someone should design a program that can search for these mirrors automatically if a download stops working.

The first impression I had is that Julia didn't do these at 100%, I guess she didn't have to because these were probably just for simple warm up... I don't fall that often on videos like these with other players (ah, yes unless Ana) -- even Victoria I haven't seen that many pre-match warm up vids...

For similar reasons as Dispeker I had some problems to follow the interview:lol:, but I recently watched it again so I hope to tell you something useful about it.
It`s hard to translate every detail, in general Julia is more relaxed and more perky as to be seen in more recent interviews of her. I guess it has to do with carefreeness of youth and tennis life during the last 3 years has left some traces in her personality.
There is a lot of blabla about things like her first match at the US Open, the beginning of her career and so on. We already know about these things. But a few things are worthy to be mentioned.

On the question on what she still has to work on technically, Julia said "there is actually nothing, in main it`s a question of consistency and of the head to be successful". ( she was a little bit undecided and clumsy in the choice of words here ) She seemed already at that time to know what her biggest problem in tennis is.
She repeated this point at several other occasions in this interview.

She was also asked about her improvement in game and rankings. She wants to be Top 100 player ( her actual ranking was 120 ). And, that she "now is 19 years old, there is no need to be in a hurry. She is still improving and and it`s no problem when you play your best tennis at the age of 21 or 22 then". Well she really said that.

Her practice times were 3 times daily for 2 hours, and for 6 days in a week. That`s pretty much, I guess.

Her former coach , a pretty smart and sensible guy mentioned her to be very ambitious. They both say that`s it`s very important to be open-minded and talk about the problems. Julia said that "Björn Jakob finds the right words to talk with her" several times, so she might have had some problems in that matter earlier.;)

At last she said that she likes Spain and Mexico very much, therefore the interviewer gave her a coupon for a visit in a mexican restaurant, and she really enjoyed having some time on the court with disabled people at a tournament in Memphis.
:wavey:

Btw, The interview can be seen on her homepage in the section" media-video" in much better quality.

:hatoff: Many thanks Joy division... don't worry, I didn't want a literal translation just the general idea which you did pretty well... Point by point or almost...

(1) Well nice she knew already.

(2) On that specific aspect, well it's not surprising, women players now generally mature around 21-22 and the Martina Hingis', Sharapova's, Serena's, Vee's or other players who started performing a very high level of tennis since their teenage days is pretty much a utopia now.

Indeed, Julia was pretty right and she's in the almost perfect timing at 22-23, just Petra for example who had her best year at 21 or Victoria.

(The rest) Well is very interesting but I have lots of admiration for Julia's composure and sense about things... this is certainly a great quality that she carries here... she only just needs to get her "inconsistency" straight and I'm certain she can do some amazing things with this composure.

[...] and she's very lovely too.

That's true and it's interesting, for it must have been one of the first tournaments where she used her „new“ serve. Because sometime before the US Open 2009 she had changed her serve motion. Until then she tossed the ball and let her raquet drop at the same time before swinging up:

FcmtEWG0ULg
Wimbledon 2008:
jz-0OCgUbOc
February 2009:
3645YtbuDqc
May 2009:
NdlY6sQMVUY

In May 2009 Sascha had become Julia's new coach and it was obviously him who brought about the change concerning her backswing motion. From now on she raised her racket (instead of dropping it) before swinging back:

Vikapower

^^ Indeed Sasha just simply shortened her motion... I don't specifically know the reason for that but from the US Open 2007, even with her old motion Julia seemed to have already a very good amount of pop on her serve...

The advantage of shortening the service motion generally in addition with the toss is that it can bring some pop (speed) on the serve, it makes it difficult for the returner to read but your timing has to be perfect... it's not a miracle solution because if the kinetic chain is already broken before even the completion of the swing then these aren't going to do nothing.

From 7:43 in the Justine vs. Julia match, you can see she really had already lots of velocity already with her old motion (more classic), so they maybe changed it for practical reasons... IDK someone who knows Julia more longer can tell better.

And there is just more that can go wrong with a longer, more complex service motion. With a shorter one you simply have more time to focus on the hit. That's probably of particular importance concerning her kickserve.

I don't quite get what you want to say here. :) As regards the shorter serve motion there's no great chance that anything could interrupt the completion of the swing. I mean, it's a short and flowing movement – there's not much that can go wrong?

 Oh yes there are... before the swing of the racket to the ball, your toss can go astray (your tossing arm, fingers...), you can lose balance for example if you bring the rudder left arm down to early, you can overcome inertia twice if your hesitant... over-swing, under-swing [...] with pressure nerves... you can under-extended (something which often happens to Sabine when she's nervous with her serve, she doesn't go and look up for the ball at it's highest point) and even if you got all this right, your wrist etc...

Don't forget also that because you execute faster, you get a good rhythm but also have a stronger chance of losing your timing, I don't know if this is a fact...

There are many others I don't specifically have in mind... the short motion as you said puts much more emphasis on timing but it's not a guaranty. :)

I read an excellent research the other day of a Dr. who has a Phd in biomechanics and explained the physics (different laws that comes with them, mainly the 3 Newton physics laws), mechanics and medical aspects of swings... in sports overall (baseball, tennis etc...) from the St. Caterina college... when I'll have sometime next time I'll put it. ;)

Ok, you apparently meant something different than I did. I thought you were only referring to the motion of the racquet swing and not to the whole service motion. As regards the latter, I agree, of course, that there are many potential sources of error.

Well ok, well we do agree... there are often errors who occurs, like a slighter inclination in the racket face or variation in angle (for example on the slice serve...) but these are obviously none problematic...

Julia's serve is really beautiful, I think that's the bottom line... in Madrid versus Safina the commentators on English ES were really very praise full to that aspect of her game. :worship:

Time-pressed these days, therefore just some words.
I like your vid very much, very nice sequences of pictures.:worship:
The music is very winged and melancholic ( Idk, whether these are the right words, I hope you know what I mean ), and all these Renaissance paintings are very heavy. That`s a little bit too much for my taste in context with Julia.`
What would you think about taking musical pieces of Eric Satie ?
Nevertheless, I don`t want to take anything away and I`m looking forward to the next one.
Merry Christmas to you and everybody.:wavey:

Well yes  but it was really the only way of how to illustrate what I wanted to... Skoo told me to make a video with her winners and stuffs like that, in 2-3 days I will perhaps get that done.

It's really a great vid, Vikapower. You surely put a lot of effort into it. What always strikes me about Julia is how graceful and elegant her movements are (at least on court) and you highlighted this pretty well here - at least that's how I see it ;)

Yes this is what I tried to highlight for example with Yu Na Kim and Aphrodite, she's really very graceful, elegant... in her discipline... nice you saw it. :yeah:

 At the the basis I wanted to orient the video on Stuttgart but none of my videos from there are .mp4 so I decided to shoot like a film finally... even if there's not that many many sequences on Julia.

Nice work, John, but, as you know, her movement doesn't strike me as elegant, especially forward :) Actually, I can't find any resemblance between the movement of female tennis players and ballerinas or skaters. They're not even close to Federer :) Nevertheless, her strokes are quite elegant :)

Happy Newton Day to everybody!

Well, Julia's elegance comes certainly from her demeanor on court, she has a very classy, elegant style overall... it doesn't really have to do with her movement or tennis shots... :)

Just see it as the birth and decadence of a Goddess... :D

Woohoo. And with a more lively soundtrack. Heavy metal or something like Beethoven's Eroica :)

Well, can't argue with that :) Cannot really like her movement though :)

IK nothing about heavy metal so probably no chance... but don't worry you don't highlight winners and action with soft music. :yeah:

Generally the music illustrates what you want you want show in the image... :D I've used Anya Marina (clean and sober) -- because Julia's smile is exhilarating, Debussy and Chopin berceuse to really put an emphasis on her class and both are able to tell a story on their own...

Eroica is really not bad, inspiration on a Y day will tell.
