the practice courts in Rome are so cool. Beautiful calm place. Really like it.

yeah, this is mostly because Julia practiced very early in the morning, around 9.00/9.30

so the Foro Italico was still not so crowded :) and anyway the location is just amazing.

 Ah ok, I was wondering also why there weren't much people watching lol thought that amplified the notions of serenity in these practice courts.

Well, her footwork...

I wish she had once a coach who forced her to watch some movies with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and take some tap dance lessons.:lol:
But she does not like dancing and it might be too late now anyway.

 Ha, ha, lol good one though this seems like a good practice IMO to develop the hearing part of tennis you know to judge the amount of power, spin etc. of a player at contact -- probably that's what she was doing

Plus, Julia keeps her eyes open on contact lol.

So Steffi thinks Lisicki is more talented than Julia :spit: Well, it is pretty subjective.

İm thinking the same way. To me; Sabine>julia>angie>andrea. But as we see, talent is not the most important thing in tennis. Discipline, focus, stability are the key for success. Talent is the strawberry on the cake.. İt makes a difference in some situation.

Thanks Aravanecaravan!

Lol at 0:30. The guy asks Julia "too fast for you?" and Julia teases him and says, "no, it's too slow", despite the fact that she was completely beaten by the previous two serves to her backhand (I suspect they had good spin on them, it seems that the serve at 0:12 swung into her body and the serve at 0:20 kicked up and away from her backhand).

Julia is obviously finding that practice session pretty fun, laughing a lot (1:00, 3:44 for instance) but she's also finding it pretty challenging. The sound of the serve indicates that they are not lightning fast but it appears that the guy has good disguise and spin on his serve, and as a whole Julia is not handling it well at all. For instance at 1:14 Julia goes to take a swing at a forehand return and the serve obviously curves away from her at the last second. The guy can probably produce slice, slice topspin, kick, and twist as well as a mixture of speeds from the same toss, which is creating problems for Julia, since most girls have a more limited range of serves, despite the fact he is clearly not serving all that fast most of the time (faster towards the end of the clip). He won't ace Julia much like that, but he's making her miss a lot of returns.

I wonder where the guy is from. Maybe a local coach, originally from Europe? He has a European sounding accent which makes it hard for me to understand him but they are speaking in English, which might mean that he isn't German.

I am pretty sure the "guy" was Nentzel.

I love the exchange at 3:40-3:55. It's great to see any of the players having fun and not stressed out, and this is exactly why I love to go to a tournament like Miami the first few days, before it starts getting tense and filled up with crowds of people. Julia was relaxed and laughing and afterwards she wasn't so bothered with autograph seekers that she didn't have time for a photo with me, which I was genuinely grateful for. Later in the week it's pretty much all "business" and you can tell the players are getting tense and a little tired of the attention.

HowardH
Mar 26th, 2013, 01:39 AM
Oh, so Julia and Nentzel must be really used to speaking in English. You would expect some German conversation there but they just use English automatically, maybe it's out of politeness because there is a non-German speaker around. You would think she faces his serve so often she would have gotten used to it... then again returning is not her strength. Maybe it was even worse before she got used to it .

By the way what camera do you use?

Raj was there, as you can see in the background of the video. Not sure if he speaks German or not, but it would obviously be easier when all three of them are together to speak a common language. Or maybe they were putting on a show for the camera(s), lol. They were certainly having some fun with it.

I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ150. It's a middle of the road point and shoot, 24X zoom that does OK for pics but my main focus is in shooting video, and that is where it has big advantages over other similar cameras, like Canons and Nikons and Sonys, IMHO. The Lumix will capture full HD (1080p) video at 60fps whereas the others generally won't do it at better than 30fps. I use my camera almost exclusively for shooting tennis, so it was important to find one that would shoot at 60fps, to record high speed action at fluid motion. When I was looking for a new camera last year, I researched and looked at sample video on Youtube and many of the Canon/Nikon/Sony videos were quite choppy or jittery, and I was used to buttery smooth video from my old Canon Powershot, so I went with the Panasonic and couldn't be happier. The file sizes are enormous, if you shoot at full HP and capture in raw unedited format, but if you wanted, you could actually record and capture to the card in MP4 to compress and save memory card space.

On one 16GB SDHC card, I can get 3110 photos at 4000x3000 pixel resolution or 1 hr. 15 minutes of full HD video at 1080p in unedited mode, or some combination. For this trip to Miami, I took 4 empty 16GB cards to Miami, ran out, and had to spill over and use half of a 32GB card I had from last year.

That's a lot of stuff....

My plan of attack in shooting matches is to use the warm up to take as many photos and as much video as I can--that's five minutes worth right there. Generally I will snap as many photos as I can the first two minutes and use the remaining three for an introductory video. If it is a player I intend to shoot a lot of video of, like Julia, I then will shoot the first two games, one receiving and one serving, in video. Then, for the next few games, I will alternate shooting photos and video for entire games. One of Julia's service games lasted more than 8 minutes, though, and my arm/shoulder got too tired to keep holding the camera steady, so I had to shut the camera down and take a break.

After a set, if I feel comfortable with the shots/video I have, I will watch the rest of the match, or if I still want something more, I'll go back and shoot a few more games here and there in the same fashion.

Here is the infamous "ass" comment from Julia, where she argues the line call:

So this is match video 7 from Aravanecaravan

x0zyS50Kz5w

In general Julia didn't seem to be very happy about the calls in this match. Not just the "you could see my ass, nothing else" comment, but also in vid 5, where the look she gives the umpire (expecting a call) after the first point is priceless. I'm not sure about the other calls but in vid 6 it was admittedly strange for the umpire to overrule when Julia was in between the chair and the ball.

Kipling
Apr 4th, 2013, 01:47 PM
I think Julia's mood that day didn't help matters. But she had a very friendly crowd on her side--most of the people watching were supporting her, and, like Julia, we didn't like a lot of the calls that day, so between being testier than normal and being buoyed by the crowd, I think she felt almost obligated to get on the umpire a few times.

@SuckMila: no problem. My pleasure. I love tennis and this week in Miami is the best vacation I could ask for. Being part of the "scene" there in the first week and getting to take so many photos and so much video and being able to report first hand on the matches and practices and behind the scenes things going on at the tournament is all part of the fun for me. I'm happy there are others who enjoy the photos and videos!

She always says more during her Stuttgart than during the rest of the year:

- Satisfied with the first two sets, would be nice if she always played like this
- In the end I ran out of energy, not used to that by herself but no practice and then a difficult match against a top ten player where you have to move well, have to get to every ball for 2 sets
- was a crappy match from both of them in the beginning of the 3rd set, then Julia played a terrible service game and that gave Kvitova the confidence that she used very well
- won't regret playing here, her favorite tournament of the year, I enjoy being here too much to not play here
- Gonna take a lot of positives from here, I played a good match, lost in the end, but how she came back from her break gives her confidence
- off to Estoril to get some matches under her belt before Madrid
- (Fed Cup) we're all pretty good players, we're all pretty young and hopefully we're gonna have a few good years in Fed Cup
- It's important to be a good team and to accept when another player gets chosen to play a match
- There's always a little friction, that's normal among women (Julia...), but those are forgotten when it comes to the matches and everybody benefits when we play well and maybe win the Fed Cup one day
- (Why is there more conflict among the men than among the women) I don't know, you'd rather expect that among women (JULIA!!), can't speak for the men, they're all good players, what Tommy Haas is doing is sensational, the others have shown that they're good, hopes they will get together eventually

Quick summary for the non-German folks of the Regio-TV video:

- a little brag about her serve speed
- again the same analysis of her match, happy about the first 2 sets, ran out of power in the third
- Didn't sell her Porsche, no idea how to properly translate "Ich bin ihn Gassi gefahren"
- wants to be known for her tennis, not for being beautiful, being called pretty doesn't mean a thing to her
- she respects all other players, doesn't want to predict a winner but hopes for a German

The difference between her interviews in Stuttgart and elsewhere is amazing.

She has a few days to decide whether she will take part in the doubles so she will be able to assess how her wrist is coming along. Meanwhile I suggest a lot of fitness work involving legs, heart and lungs, since her wrist will make it difficult to do upper body or hit on court. Even if she plays it's only doubles so she can push a bit in fitness training and not worry about being a little bit tired.

After match interview on eurosport. "Big disappointment."

Julia is a little sad about the forgiven setpoints but she gives her opponent a lot of credit. She mentions an inflammation in her wrist and a not so good physical shape overall.
It affects her on the forehand when she wants to plays with spin and speed. Julia will decide with her team whether she will take part in doubles or not.

 She is talking about her hand being inflamed and still considers to keep on playing.

I really don't know what to say about that. Wouldn't even surprise me if she signs up for Mixed doubles. Where the hell does this "I have to fight through everything" come from? :(

I just watched the highlights from the match. Watching that second set in its entirety must have been difficult. Playing with inflammation is just plain stupid--it creates more irritation and delays the healing that much more.

Görges actually said in her Eurosport interview that resting would be best for the healing process. Anyhow, without knowing the precise diagnosis and the possible causes for the problem it´s difficult to tell what she should do and what she should not do.

As of right now she is still in the doubles draw. At least she isn't in Mixed.

Only a short tidbit about Julia, the moderator mentions Julia's "cheesecake tweet" and asks Böseler (Tennismagazin) how she presents herself as an athlete at the moment. Böseler says that to him it seems like she is oblivious to her current performance, also seemed to him like that after her R1 loss at the US Open. She always says "It's not that bad, it's all gonna come back, in practice she is much better, it's just a matter of time until it reappears during matches". He thinks she is in a serious crisis and cheesecake tweets might be funny, but her situation is much more serious, and he had wished she had rather tweeted that she ends the season and does 4 weeks of basic practice and then 6 weeks of conditioning to attack in 2014.

Ran.de Interview (German) (http://www.ran.de/tennis/video/goerges-konstanz-ist-das-wichtigste-clip)

- Memory of 2013 split, "the first 2 or 3 months were really positive", then her first major injury
- injury bothered her for 4 months, especially on the forehand
- "there are no points to defend, the race begins at 0, very player starts at 0"
- "Did you think about changing the coach?" "No, absolutely not, I've been working with my coach for 5 years, there is so much respect and recognition for the performance we have delivered over the years that I definitely did not think about stopping because I [like] consistency and times like these belong to [a career], I can't always have good times, there are also rosy times*, and you want to come out of those, stronger, as a team, and for me that only works with consistency and my team is exactly the right thing for that."
- Fed Cup goal is the semifinal

* She really phrased it like that, she used "rosige Zeiten" in German which literally and logically translates to "rosy times", but I assume she meant the opposite.

Quality is really not good enough to watch it for too much time, but I checked on her MTO (definitely cramping ) and watched the last game (shouldn't have: on MP she let a ball just go through without even trying to reach it, apparently expecting it to go out).

I watched the first two sets live.
She was trying, but she was not the deciding player on court, when Ishizu wasn't playing like crap, Julia had no chance. Set two was way better, but again her opponent did most of the work.

Should have won anyway....

Well, the cramping, i wouldn't read too much into it, she had a two long matches so this can happen early in the season.
