I like that video. And they should have sung. Sabine and Julia are cute together. Sabine is all smiley, and that is able to make Julia smile too. But how come Julia doesn't know who Heidi Klum is? Or maybe she just didn't know that Heidi was married to Seal.

It's obviously harder to make Julia smile and laugh than Sabine. At the beginning she's all tired and sighing and almost rolling her eyes but finally (with Sabine's help) Julia becomes smiley. :hearts:

Great video!
I guess Julia just doesn't know who Seal is. Julia is fairly young and Seal didn't have a big hit in recent times (I guess).
But Mercedes would be quite an unusual name Mr. Benz. I guess they just said what first popped into their minds when they heard Mercedes-Benz.
But I really liked this video, Jule and Sabine are great together.

 No she doesn't know Heidi Klum... ;)

I'd say Julia seems to be more strict this is really perceivable in her voice intonation... pretty hard -- Sabine is a little bit more flower-ish, sensual and smiling, she smiles/laughs a lot and very easily.

I think if you flipped the image off and asked a person who doesn't know Julia to listen just only to her voice here and asked them to try to describe who they think Julia is physically ; we would get lots of surprise descriptions.

Not to know Seal or Heidi Klum as a German actually is a not the worst thing, but "Mercedes Benz" is sailing close to the wind.:o:lol:
Anyway they had some fun, Sabine was much more relaxed.
Julia`s English is as bad as ever, she has a big pimple on her nose and seems to have caught a cold again.:( Hope it doesn`t affect her too much in her match today.

Oh yes, she is.

And Mona Barthel is such an incredible nice person.

HowardH
Jan 18th, 2012, 11:19 PM
Her eyes are moving to the right during that short clip, so she might be reading a card or her eyes might be moving because she's trying to remember what to say. The funniest bit is that her eyes move to the right when she says her name. Surely you don't need to think about that part Julia.

I agree she looks lovely in that interview with ZDF. Mona does come across as very personable and likeable.

Even though I don't understand the interview it's nice to watch it. It's a bit quick for someone who is only beginning German and it's not like written interviews where you can use online translators to help. But I pick up the odd word.

I sort of get..."Congrats...Naturlich....match...Romina Oprandi... tough here... grandslam matches... positiv...I unfortunately... in New Zealand...Pattaya... That's good... Fed Cup, Barbara Rittner... Petkovic ... with Sabine... ranking... Angelique Kerber... US Open... Mona Barthel... Mona is a very good player... Hobart final... doubles... respect... definitiv... Deutsch-Maschine... Stuttgart... top player... Philip Kohlschreiber... Good luck... thanks."

Lol. And Mona's one has an "Ich glaube..." somewhere near the beginning.

Julia is pretty safe, not quite as Mona, in her talk and expression. But she`s is always very friendly, hearty and humble in those kind of interviews and you can see that even when you don`t understand German, I guess.:D

Julia talks fluently, but she uses more "phrases" or words that hide a kind of inaccuracy in expression, and with that she also gets some time to catch the next thought.
"Letztendlich"(In the very end), or "wie gesagt"(As said) are her favorite words in that sense in this interview.

Mona prefers "Ich glaube"(I believe), "Ich finde"(I think), or "ja, das stimmt" (Yes, that`s right) to start a sentence. But for my taste she does not overuse it. Her reasoning allover is very clear. What catches the eye is that she takes deep breaths in between her talking, but it` not caused by anxiety, I think.
Her favorite word seems to be "super".:D

Kohli told the interviewer that the german tennis men would like to achieve the same success as the girls.
And she responded that she`s honored, but that a few years ago it was the other way around. And that the guys do have potential.

What tickles my fancy= perfect English expression.
Only difference is the extra comma (I have recently become aware that the German language uses the comma much more extensively than English.)

We would say "I think by now you know what tickles my fancy".

Now, what happened in the video where they burst into laughter? Was it just because they missed their cue and got the timing to lift the flag completely out of sync?

Great videos Ravanloon  said it in the picture thread already lol -- and the quality is really exceptional. :worship:

It depends what you mean by effort, I don't have the impression Julia is forcing on her forehands out there on the slow mo's -- she doesn't have the ease of Federer in training if that's what you mean...

The only notable thing I see is on a contact point, she didn't seem to have a good drive especially on these forehands she finishes kind of shoulder height I find (the kind of modified wind shield wiper she does). She brings her racket up too early (probably to brush up the back of the ball more) and I bet these are the one's in match that often probably lands short or something.

Otherwise her forehands are so clean a technical beauty of a masterpiece, a model :hearts: also this is so training that there's a time after contact Julia ended straight footed.

Not exactly Federer's ease, but other players seem to put less efort into it. But you know I have great difficulties in describing motion. In this video (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ravanloon/6816839449/in/set-72157629168633737/), she seems to put less effort into it. I suppose the extra effort is for practicing winners. But still, it looks to me like she's not generating enough power from the swing and arms and she needs to add more by putting her whole body into the shot. Or I'm just talking nonsense :)

But still, it looks to me like she's not generating enough power from the swing and arms and she needs to add more by putting her whole body into the shot. Or I'm just talking nonsense :)

Well I see nothing, the reason why Julia's forehand is so effortless or flawless is because she does the essential technical points very well, rotation of the hip/trunk and shoulders which creates momentum into her arm which swiftly wraps around her body or to the opposite shoulder if you wish. There's no stub, it's all in fluidity and timing as far as in the video you chose.

Additionally, I don't think these are her most powerful swings -- she's just tapping 1 or 2 balls to keep the rhythm, I doubt she was playing for the Australian Open trophy here unless if eventually she was Nadal. ;)

As for the body, she does engage herself -- she cuts the trajectories and comes to the contact of the ball (I really love that) ; players who generally do that are always going to have effortless swings and power into their shots which is Julia's case. Her rotations are into the contact zone and the momentum of her body is always positive, sometimes she tends to end away and backwards like she was pulling or tying to keep the ball more into play than going to through it completely.

The only noticeable lack of physical engagement I can see is in the area of her feet with the ground and effectively she's a little passive there  but it's training/practice so that's understandable. In the other video now the forehand at 1:03 I find she was a little bit passive, sort of illustrating my preceding point and I think she lost a tiny bit of control there and certainly where she does lose control with her forehand at times.

The exercise at 1:40 .

Who wants to play that tag game with Julia that Angelique is playing at 2:02? There are probably some rules about where you are allowed to touch but rules are meant to be broken... accidentally of course.

They went for a Japanese dinner? I love sushi and sashimi. And tempura.

What I was wondering all the long smiling is if Angelique would beat me on a 100m... she has some serious explosiveness in her feet -- we're the same height though she's probably not an expert in track and field.

^^ Well in the Caribbean that's the national sport, everyone did that I guess -- personally I didn't do it at high professional level (STAPS, CREPS etc...) but there's a stadium close by where I live where you can train with some national or Caribbean athletes, in my university also I was in SUAPS where they often organized competitions between universities, so I'd say I'm intermediate/advanced. ;)

If you google Gaël Montfils and soccer on Youtube you can see the stadium in question (called Jean Naffer). ;)

Thanks to the uploader. Russian commentary (I've noticed that Russian commentators talk a lot, or is that just my imagination?). 720p HD.
I'm not sure how long such an upload will last, so I recommend using something like keepvid to download the file if you have the space (800mb)

 Oh, oh, I think they're doing their jobs. There are 2 sides on the court and each ball kid is on a side.

It's player's preference to have the balls on one specific side but that's not how it's done usually. It's something which you see a lot in women's tennis -- girl's (players) have a tendency to imitate a lot one another --

Another thing too is Julia has been trying IMO to install some 'routines' in her game to probably help her concentration (taking the ball you won a point with to play to the next point, balls on one side...) but also her grunt for example but she's really lovely.

that poor ballgirl with so many balls in the hand... I understand Julia was upset but she should be nicer to that kids;)

Another practice video at Miami. Thanks to the uploader. Julia's fh technique is really so extreme. It's unique to her and gives her a lot of power (at the expense of some control), but sometimes I wish she had a more compact fh takeback like Federer, Nadal, Safin, Berdych, and in general most of the men. She would be more consistent. In general the men are better at keeping the racquet on the racquet arm side or behind them. The girls have a tendency to get the racquet to point not only towards the back fence, but towards the side fence on the non-racquet side. I guess it's their way of lengthening the swing to get power, but it comes at a price.

I would have thought that Julia was a strong enough girl to use a technique more similar to the men. Stosur does it (despite her terrible bh and tendency to frame, Stosur's fh is very nice). Justine did it too. However, she probably developed the technique when she wasn't so strong, and I guess she is not as strong as Sam.

Her technique is quite unique and the helicopter swing is kind of cute, it just makes her rather prone to hitting late.

I kind of wish she would take the bh backswing back a bit more cleanly too. She likes to keep the racquet tip pointing forwards when her hands go back which delays her racquet movement. Look at the best 2 handed bhs on the mens' tour- Djokovic and Murray, maybe Soderling too- they get the racquet back more cleanly and directly than Julia.

Oh well, they don't look as cute as her when doing it though.

Thanks for posting that other video Silesia.

Julia looks really good.

I understand the problems with uploading. When I uploaded my videos of Alize playing Claire Feuerstein in Auckland qualies this year (3 videos with a total time of about 23 minutes) it took many many hours to upload- a whole afternoon. In fact, for some reason the upload failed the first time, which was really annoying, since I had to do it all over again. Fortunately for me I have a laptop and a PC, so I uploaded the videos using the laptop and used the PC during this time.

Dispeker, I love that moment too. "Aaaahhh! Julia!" (Which sounds like Yulia to an English speaker.)

0:17 - "Vorhand auf der Mit-te...Mann" ("Forehand down the middle...Jesus"). Seems like she was annoyed that Flavia didn't play the ball where she wanted her to (down the middle).

God, how I love it when she is pissed :hearts: But not very polite.. on the other hand, Flavia probably didn't understand it anyway ;)

^^^
Julia probably was annoyed of at herself in that scene. The whole sequence seemed like a competitive match in practice to me. Can`t imagine that she is so impolite to Flavia.

I agree that it seems like a practice match. So in this case Julia could not expect Flavia to hit the ball nicely up the middle.

I think that Julia is annoyed at herself for hitting the ball in the middle of the court and giving Flavia an easy forehand. I.e. she gave Flavia a midcourt ball which allowed her to attack with her fh.

Thanks a lot Aravanecaravan! Wonderful vids as always.

So many great videos  really awesome, thanks all -- I wonder what was Nelsen telling her about the serve in one of the sequences. The toss, about her second serve toss kick ? Seems something like it.

 I most of the videos I have the impression Julia was having issues with her backhand to me. In the one of GameSetMatchR, it's really a great angle, she really has a beautiful weight transfer -- is it me but her take back on the backhand is much less than her forehand  I didn't really pay attention to that lol.

Howard did she had issues hitting through her backhand or difficulties positioning the racket under it ? From this angle, you kind of have the feeling that her swing radius on that side is pretty small which can really reduce the precision at times on that shot -- I had already observed that in matches on backhands Julia was mainly missing ; she doesn't extend through it and has a tendency at times to not stay totally in the shot, like she kinds of rotates back which results in some loss of energy -- probably my eyes are confusing me but in the same video you can kind of see that but it's not really amplified to the extent sometimes like in her matches.

In the video versus Pennetta looks like they were playing a competitive match  probably can tell from her grunts where she generally does that in regular tour matches --

Anyways nice to see Julia's reactions in training  she's really very concerned and tries to give her best so that's really awesome to see.

Yes I agree, hey but don't you think it's a manner to compensate for their natural lack of explosiveness/power ?

I know tennis is not all about muscles -- one could take the ball early, use the energy/force of the ball with clean technique and still get lots of power, Petra does that extremely well but to do so you also need textbook footwork and generally girls are not really known for that.

Ok, Petra was kind of a bad example  because her technique is really excellent and I think it kinds of 'salvages' her sub-par movement, so even if she's off balance but has the possibility to nail a shots, she's so fluid, relaxed, simple in her technique but also her grip certainly does play a role (?) that she can regardless of the situation.

I think Julia could but as you noted out she developed that technique years before she was that physically strong. Julia got this fit only just recently like in 2010 or so.

Finally I think it's just her way to strike her shots -- personally I like it because it shows IMO that players are not obliged to copy on Federer etc. to also hit effective shots. They should develop their own style without neglecting the basics of an effective stroke in tennis.

Julia has all -- her shots are fluent, she cuts the trajectories, has beautiful weight transfer, great racket head speed initiated by a great shoulder rotation, she's well balanced -- there's really no stubs other than her big swing.

I also think that would Julia have had a better footwork/movement, she'd have been able to compensate for that by getting in place earlier/faster so that it can not be exposed. Don't you think so ?

I kind of wish she would take the bh backswing back a bit more cleanly too. She likes to keep the racquet tip pointing forwards when her hands go back which delays her racquet movement. Look at the best 2 handed bhs on the mens' tour- Djokovic and Murray, maybe Soderling too- they get the racquet back more cleanly and directly than Julia.

Oh well, they don't look as cute as her when doing it though.

Yeah that's true, I wanted to point that out in my preceding post but I saw you talked about it. Well I think it's too late for Julia -- these kinds of things I'm really doubtful she can change them and anyways I'm not really certain it really hampers her stroke that much since at contact everything reestablishes itself like any normal backhand.

I think Julia has a shorter swing on her backhand than forehand -- she has great half-volleyed backhands probably one of the best out there.

Yes she's really lovely at everything she does, right ? :hearts:

Also what do you think of Julia's 'gaze control' -- I've been thinking of that for a while but I don't think she does the normal 'ball tracking' -- she kinds of does the Federer which consists of watching the contact zone instead of the ball at least on her forehand. The position of her head and many pictures I watched observed indicates that.

In reply to Vikapower's question about bhs, yes you are onto something. You can compare Julia's bh to probably the best 2hbh on the tour right now, Novak's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWpUnyGYQ5k

Here you can see the recent progression of the bh in the men's game. These days the emphasis is on stretching back- notice the right arm totally stretched back, the left arm also almost straight at the back- and then using this backwards stretch to extend forward through the contact. Agassi was one of the first to hit this way I think. The women have not really reached the point where this level of technique is common. However you will also see Murray and Soderling hit the bh this way.

Julia's swing is more based on a loop, which used to be a common emphasis but is now considered less critical for the bh. She doesn't take the racquet back as cleanly or as early as the top men. Her arms do not stretch back as far as some during the backswing. She likes to keep the racquet tip pointing forwards for too long. You'll notice that Djokovic has his racquet back well before Julia on this side.

In general the bh backswing will always be smaller than the fh, that's why the fh is a bigger shot for almost all players (esp men) and even players with great bhs- Djokovic for instance- will usually run around the bh to hit a fh when an attacking chance arises. But you are right. One thing that happens to Julia on her bh side is that because she likes to keep the racquet tip pointing forwards for too long, she rotates away from the ball just before the hit. Sometimes she then does not have enough time to start rotating forwards again. Again if you compare Novak, he stretches back quite early, so is always able to launch forwards towards the ball again.

Brent, awesome videos  -- BTW we can see in the second video that Julia wasn't reluctant to taking the balls on her left side.

It shows probably that when things get tight she would have a tendency to create a 'patterns' on court for whatever reasons. It's obvious that with Nelsen, with the grunt, taking the winning ball back to play the next point etc. she's been trying to develop things to help her focus/concentration especially in difficult moments situations.

This video was apparently at 1-3 down first set if I'm not mistaken.

Nice explanation thanks -- I rewatched the videos of Julia versus Clijsters where the angle is much more evident to observing that. In fact Julia has the unit turn and seems to be preparing early indeed but it's not totally the case because she leaves her racket way forward --

In fact in comparison to Novak, his racket and shoulder come together to rotate forward but with Julia she turns her shoulders but her racket arms do not follow completely so yes there's a delay -- I never really observed that in the past until right now evidently with your initial post.

So how does that really affect her shot ? It increases the path before contact and can make her late especially on fast balls ? Does it also affect her return of serve for example which requires really short clean take back to get the shots back effectively ?

Julia's backhand is particularly affected in that department, ROS.

Yes in fact the take back on the backhand is shorter because it's also physiological right ? The right arm/shoulder can not stretch back that much.

Yes, it would be nice to actually watch Julia and my other favorites (Aravane, Sania) play their matches, but it is a tradeoff. Yeah, she played a great match against Caro (and should have won it as we know). Idk, if she really moved better back then but she was definitely in great shape. Winning her firt title two weeks before probably gave her some extra confidence and playing Caro motivated her even more, I guess.

Thanks for all the videos, finally can see a little bit of matches from Barcelona -- posters on Youtube like Vadim should really be elected for the HOF. The quality is exceptional. :worship:

 First time I see Muguroza in the highlights, she really has a very athletic, super-fit almost sprinter like body -- she reminds Andrea Petkovic somehow in that department -- also her forehand take-back is ridiculously short almost like a slap shot, she kinds of reminds me KDK, she seems to have short but quite explosive swings which in taking the ball early simultaneously can do wonders. I don't find she hits the ball that "hard" but generates lots of velocity with her shots --

I'd really like to see a whole match somewhere :sobbing: I'll search in Vadim's library.

Julia seemed to have quicker feet indeed but it's kind of hard to tell. I wouldn't say she was moving more efficiently but she was executing faster.

Julia made a lot of progress on endurance, being able to stay more physically engaged in matches and probably it penalized her footwork in the process.

She had such a lean body back then, similar to Djokovic, she was light and flying on court certainly -- by taking body mass then that could be the reason why she lost on the foot work --

In terms of foot-work, you can judge the efficiency of a player via the amount of screeches or noise their shoes make on a hard court surface -- players like Nadal, Federer and Djokovic exceptional movers have recurrent music with their shoes.

By listening here could say the frequency with which Julia moves her feet in this match is quite high IMO but you could still feel for example on the run and changes of direction for example she was heavy.

---

One thing I've never understood though with Julia's foot-work is why she doesn't do the cross-step when she turns around her backhand from a long distance ? In this match you can see her do it perfectly and many times in this match against Caroline.

On the contrary, she does a tons of small little steps which IMO kills speed and precision at times on her forehand. It makes her kind of rigid whereas if she did that, she would cover bigger distance and get to touch her forehand almost all the time like Federer or Nadal.

5UJKFKX4k4I

This close up video on Federer shows it pretty well at 0:33 -- he combines small little steps and a cross-step where his right foot like comes in front his left foot to turn around his backhand. There it's on a short distance but from longer position, it allows to cover so much ground -- I think I rarely see Julia do this anymore or probably I'm wrong.

The "ease" and determination in this sequences is probably due to her youth and inexperience at that time.
Hard to say, but I wish she had taken along a little bit more of it in her further development.:D

Correction :  In the post above, I correct just one little thing -- I slightly exaggerated when I insinuated Julia does small little instead of a more efficient small steps combined with a cross-step to turn around her backhand on a longer distance -- it's only sometimes. That said she could ameliorate that specific aspect to be able to cover more ground and get to her forehand much more often in my opinion.

 Well Jules didn't get too old, right ? -- Yes, Julia's movement has changed, I do think though that her movement on clay has drastically improved --

For that you can compare Julia versus Serena in Roland-Garros to the match for example Johnbert posted above -- against Serena, Julia's right or left foot in changes of direction were all over the place. It was making her lose a lot of time and she was always late on Serena's shots, I think she ameliorated that a lot.

Well, yes I agree the youth etc. played a role  -- I do think also that the gain in muscular mass Julia took from end 2010 up to 2011 deteriorated her footwork somehow. Such change in the body weight, mass etc. definitively makes you heavier and additionally slower especially for somebody who's not as physically gifted.

 Well I'm not a specialist in musculation etc. so I'm just trying out some few ideas here and there.

Thanks, credits goes to the youtube music libary ;)

pretty bad I don´t understand at all but that driver was like a rock :D actually I understand Pop or Rock? Beides  I remember those RG drivers who are so communicative and so kind to players when they´re talking together....

She looks great!

She tends to like to have cue cards doesn't she? She's looking down at her notes to make sure she doesn't forget anything. I remember her doing something similar earlier in the year, except that time she was looking to the right:

J8aQEsPK4Ws

She looks lovely in both videos, but if I were to give her some advice I would tell her to memorize her lines completely and then keep her eyes on the camera- "keep your eyes on the prize" as they say. You have to pretend the camera is your closest friend.

I also recommend that they do something a little bit different with the light reflectors. That reflection is bouncing all over her face. Thanks for posting Silesia.

Also, Rovegun's observation is exactly right. That driver was like a rock. Totally stony faced, completely poker faced. Was he told not to interact with her at all? Lol.

^^ It's pretty weird that she needed cue cards for something she said many times. One would presume she actually thinks it :)

HowardH
May 2nd, 2012, 08:04 PM
It's either cue cards or she just has a lot of difficulty keeping her eyes on the camera.

SidTheKid
May 2nd, 2012, 08:04 PM
As Howard said maybe she doesn´t like looking into camera

Skoo
May 2nd, 2012, 08:18 PM
I don't think that is a possibility. She looks at a specific spot and you can also see there's something that reflects light down there :)

Edit: Oh, now I see Howard mentioned it. Well, maybe then she was just looking at the light reflector, for some reason :)

Edit 2: But wait, that doesn't have to be a light reflector. It could be something from one of her gadgets. Maybe she was looking at her phone or mp3 player. But there's definitely something she's looking at.

I wrote down what they literally say in this interview, it's colloquial speech (of course). I guess for those of you who want to get a better understanding of the German language it's quite useful. [In brackets you find either the correct spelling, explainations or missing word fragments]. The non-germans can copy it in Google Translator or maybe a German speaker is willing to translate it. Sorry but I'm too lazy right now.

Next Interview Video: Görges: "Nicht zu wild sein"
:D

http://de.eurosport.yahoo.com/video/01062012/73/goerges-wild.html

Was heißt in der Umkleide liegen?

Stach:..was gut is[t]!..

Stach: Ich find' kopfmäßig, vor allen Dingen, hat [makes a slip of a tongue here] das bisher sehr gut funktioniert bei dir.

Julia: (laughs) Danke (laughs)
