Welcome to this new forum, dedicated to Julia Goerges.

I have moved her cheering thread in here - if there's any older threads about her that should be in this forum, alert your moderator, or any admin, and we will move it.

Also, if you'd like a namechange for the forum, discuss it among yourselves (with a poll for example) and let us know - we'll change it.

Enjoy this place! :bounce:

How about "Julia Görges"? Seeing how that's her real name. Would be nice to do that for the Anna-Lena Grönefeld forum, too.

Look, I get that people can't type that with their computers, but doing it once for their subforum seems reasonable, no? It's just a quick copy and paste of the name with the letter ö in it. It just looks really odd to me, like it's misspelled or something.

By pressing ALT+0246 (Numblock), everyone can type an 'ö' :woohoo:

I agree I am for Julia Görges, my keyboard has " ¨ " on it and I have learned German for many years so there is no problem... the sub-forum called "Julia Görges" would be nice... Julia doesn´t like calling her "Gorgeous Goerges"... so I don´t know... any other namechanges, guys?

it´s a question if it is disrespectful because in English you can´t find that "ö"... it´s the same like our Czech players whose names are written without lines and hooks like "Kvitová, Hlaváčková, Šafářová" and so on... I think even German people rewrite Görges on Goerges sometimes if there is a reason.... I think they rewrite also "ä"="ae", "ü"="ue" when writing SMS for example if not, correct me, please...

I was actually thinking of writing her name that way when I created the forum. But it's written "Goerges" everywhere, which is why I wrote it that way here as well.

Of course, if you want it changed (and for ALG as well), we can do that.

Raiden
Jul 2nd, 2011, 03:03 PM
But it's written "Goerges" everywhereThat's WTA's fault. Apparently they have this stupid rule of dropping off all the various diacritical marks from all players' names. And then the lazy media outlets simply copy WTA's behavior instead of making their homework and verifying (even if they themselves don't have a WTA-like anti-diacritics policy). Other sports bodies, like the NBA for example, keep the dots and the accents and so forth.

No, in text messages it's rather the other way around: ö, ä, ü give you one more letter to work with, so it's always that. I heard in Switzerland, where they don't have the letter ß, they use it in texting because it's one letter shorter than the normal ss.

Either way, my opinion is to keep it simple here in the Deuce forum, because it's always been done that way. I find many other forum names confusing (like Kirilenko's Orchestra, Zoom Zoom Zvonareva and other crazy concoctions) and sometimes the player's name doesn't even appear in the forum name at all. I think simple names like "Anna-Lena Grönefeld" and "Julia Görges" and so on is better.

Besides, the most obvious thing to go for, Gorgeous Görges, is clearly something Julia feels a bit uncomfortable with, so we as her fans should be respectful in that regard.

German spelling rules allow to put oe instead of ö, but it`s quite unusual in German writen language.
http://www.canoo.net/services/Controller?dispatch=spelling&input=%F6&features=%28Cat+Letter%29%
Although it`s rarely used, it`s correct. And every German non-analphabet can read it as well.
So I think there`s absolutely no problem with Goerges.

Why would you say that? If we can have the correct ö, why would we settle for oe? Sorry, but that makes no sense at all. You only use oe, when ö is absolutely not available, which in this case it clearly is and Zamboni already said it's no problem.

Sorry, that's bullshit. We always use ä, ö, ü and ß when possible. You will not find a single German writing "Goerges" instead of "Görges". It might technically be possible to replace "ö" by "oe", but it's not very respectful.

As we German speakers all know, nobody would take an "oe" instead of "ö", if "ö" is available.
I just mentioned that "oe" is not incorrect. It`s not used, but you can take it as well, according to the German spelling rules.
That was the main message of my post.
Therefore IMO, even more, it`s hard to find any kind of disrespect towards Julia, if a foreign member of the forum, for any reason, types "oe" in her last name.
It would be nice, if we all get together in point of the "ö", and use it, as it is used to.
But if somebody fails, I wouldn`t be too angry.:wavey:

Yeah, we know you can use it as well, but it's never more than an emergency solution for when ö is not available, but in the regular forum fonts ö, like every special letter in any language, is very much available and therefore should always be the preferred.

I've mentioned this as well. I am fully aware that anyone with a non-German keyboard will most likely not be able to type the letter by default and for those people it is of course absolutely okay when they spell her name Goerges, because this falls right into the category mentioned above: letter ö not available = use oe.
However, since the name of a subforum requires only a simple copy and paste of the name with the correct letter in it, it's really not a big inconvenience for the administration team, and this has even been said by Zamboni.

It would be nice, if we all get together in point of the "ö", and use it, as it is used to.
But if somebody fails, I wouldn`t be too angry.:wavey:

No one is angry about people not spelling her name Görges, as we're well aware of their predicament. I, for example, also had to copy Ula Radwańska's name in my sig to get the correct ń. In regular forum use that would be a pain in the ass, and we're aware of that. It's about a one time thing here and me and crazillo were just confused as to why you would opt to leave it at oe, if we could have the more appropriate ö. That's all.

By the way, I wrote this before Zamboni changed it and I had put too much time into writing it to delete it, so I posted it anyway, even if it's kind of irrelevant now.

I agree that it is disrespectful.

However, pressing ALT+0246 (Numblock) is not a realistic solution for most forum users. On the other hand, following links and copying and pasting names are easy enough for everyone to do.

I am amazed that Julia Görges does not like being called "Gorgeous". It is such a complimentary adjective!

Think of the tennis court as her work place. Would you like to be called catty nicknames by your co-workers without permission? It's a bit uncomfortable and people were already giggling when the umpire did it a few times.

Besides, Julia seems to be annoyed that people tend to mention her physical attributes before her tennis skills half the time. Being objectified may be flattering to pornstars, but unless you're name is Ana Kournikova, I don't think it's what you're going for as a professional tennis player.

No, but professional sport has an element of show business in it. Many top professional sportspeople nurture an image that will get them more advertising income.

It's a bit uncomfortable and people were already giggling when the umpire did it a few times.
It is scandalous that an umpire should pronounce the name of a player at a Grand Slam tournament wrongly, and the organisers should make sure nothing like that happens again.

Besides, Julia seems to be annoyed that people tend to mention her physical attributes before her tennis skills half the time. Being objectified may be flattering to pornstars, but unless you're name is Ana Kournikova, I don't think it's what you're going for as a professional tennis player.
Because Julia Görges has been so successful at tennis, many journalists write about her, and look for non-tennis subjects that they can write about. This is part of being a famous person. It is not the most pleasant aspect of being a professional sportsperson, but when one chooses a career, one considers the disadvantages as well as the attractions. It would surely be more annoying if she were not so successful and fewer people wanted to write about her.

However, of course mentioning her physical attributes before her tennis skills (and achievements) half the time is excessive.

And others here are obsessed like me, but they somehow cope with infidels. I guess they are more tolerant. Me, I am a Julia fundamentalist, I can't overlook blasphemy

That's because the more tolerant of us know that one final day all those heretics and blasphemers will realize their folly and will come crawling back, begging on their hands and knees for forgiveness. Like this: . Yes, you too, Andman!

Anyway, welcome dominatorb2! :wavey:

 That is just wishful thinking. You don't really know that, you hope that. I am approaching the matter in a more pragmatic, Inquisitorial way

Oh, oh, so that was the reason! I was actually wondering what happened to him. Well, I suppose it makes sense. He was gonna meet Djokovic in the final, so you were his only nightmare along the way
