Marion left england yesterday morning. Just before her departure, she answered to many questions in "l'équipe", famous french newspaper. It's probably last interview before her comeback in Stanford.

Schedule before US Open will be :
- Stanford
- Toronto
- Cincinnati

No San Diego, no New Haven. She wants to be as fresh as possible in New York where she will be really ambitious.

Concerning her diet :

"I melted a lot, but I did not diet. I always paid close attention to nutrition. In fact, I replaced fat with muscle, which means that in terms of weight, I did not have much movement. But in terms of muscle volume, yes.

For those who missed it, last interview on Wimby site : http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/news/interviews/2011-06-28/201106281309279343558.html

Thanks Lighter.

The part where she talks about her diet. Is she saying that she has deliberately lost some muscle mass, to gain movement? :) The translation of her answer is a bit confusing without the question as well.

Marion always made good results during US open series. Moreover, She just has a R2 US open to defend and no points in Beijing for mandatory tournaments.

She already gets 5 results beyong 120 pts in 2011 (Brisbane, Dubaï, Doha, Strasbourg and Eastbourne) and 2 70 pts (Hobart and KL).
Hope that she will be able to obtain 3 results beyond 120 pts in playing Stanford, Toronto, Cincy, Quebec, Tokyo, Osaka and Moscow if necessary for YEC.

Marion Bartoli
On what she has done since Wimbledon...
"I rested and visited my brother. He had his first baby on the 16th of July, so I'm an auntie now! It was pretty exciting. It was relaxing to have some time off but getting back to competition is another story - I've been practicing hard to make sure I haven't lost my level. The transition to hardcourts is better than the other transitions because this is my favorite surface, but I haven't played matches in three or four weeks so it can be tough. I expect the first few matches here to be tough but if I can get through them I can improve throughout the summer."

On Serena's comeback...
"I saw her in Eastbourne and she was looking very much in shape. I felt even though she only had two tournaments, she was starting to play really well at Wimbledon. If she can play throughout the summer she'll be a huge contender to win the US Open - she has won so many times there. She's just like Venus, she can step it up from one match to the next. It's great for the game to have her back, as well as Venus, and soon Kim too. They are three big champions and I hope I can play well too and play them, so I can see where my game is."

On her constant level of improvement...
"Even though I'm 20-something now, I'm still improving. For me to be in the final four at the French Open, in my home Grand Slam, it's a huge example of how you can improve at any age. It's about how hard you work, how motivated you are and how eager your team is to help you improve. I've been working very hard with my dad and I've been having my best year. Some players like where they are and don't want to improve; some always want to get better. I was always able to be a shotmaker, but my problem was consistency, speed and stamina. If you watch me from three or four years ago, I was playing the same level for maybe one set, but now I can do that for three hours. I had some crazy long matches at French Open and Wimbledon and was able to back it up the next day too, and do it again. So it's not only about your shots, it's about repeating them. I want to keep improving - I don't know where it will take me."

Serena has been crushing all her opponents, but I still think it's a winnable match. Marion should be as fresh as possible considering her route to the final :p I hope her strategy will be to test Serena's endurance, because I think that is the smart thing to do against somebody who had lung problems. I know I said that before at Wimbledon, but her dad is a doctor so hopefully he will be telling her the same thing. It still makes me feel a little guilty saying it, but it's professional sport right? ;)

If Serena comes out and just kills her, then you have to say "too good" (argh using tennis clichés!) You can't make it a test of endurance if the other player is racing through the points by crushing all your best shots for winners. And obviously, if Marion could go out there and do the same to Serena that would be great :p But considering the opponent, I think her best shot is to concentrate more on holding serve than trying really hard to break every game. I think Marion's fitness is good enough at this point to try this kind of strategy, and her serve is good enough too, on a good day ;) Let's hope that it's one of those good days, eh?

Come on Marion. I hope she can focus for this match, despite the lack of match practice. If she loses, which wouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, I just don't want her to go down like Sharapova and Lisicki. Don't make me look foolish in my optimism, haha.

As I said in GM, she didn't have to do too much to reach the final so I don't feel too bad, even if she completley blew the first set. She didn't get crushed anyway.

I have said several times she will never have a consistent serve and I think if you compare her serving in this match to the Wimbledon encounter, I make a fair point.

I expect it's nothing to serious with her hand given that she didn't have an MTO.

I'm very disappointed, because her serve completely disappeared when she had to serve for the first set. She was 0-30 down before you knew it, with a double fault in there. It felt like a choke to me, and I expected Marion to be mentally strong, even if she lost. So I'm really disappointed that she had control of the first set, then let it slip away so passively in the crucial moment.

She was gracious in losing, smiling at Serena, but looked very dejected sitting down. I don't think Serena upped her level enough to "deserve" the first set, although obviously she took off in the second. It was more Marion's level dropping away completely, with her serve gone. Maybe I'm being unfair and her wrist was causing her a lot of problems, but it just felt like a mental collapse to me. I suspect the wrist complaint was just her way of explaining what happened.

In the second set, she was totally gone and not concentrating anymore. Maybe going over in her mind how she lost the lead in the first set. Hope it doesn't seem like I'm underestimating how good Serena is, but I didn't get the impression that she was playing close to her best. Marion just looked like she was resigned to losing, then when she started to wake up and fight again, she was already 0-5 down! Argh, you have to make a comeback earlier than that, lol. It saved getting bagelled, but it's so frustrating to watch.

Oh well.

There's no way she doesn't make YEC seriously. She's made one Premier 5 final, a Grand Slam SF and QF. Not to mention she's won a title. I wouldn't worry about this! I only hope she has enough energy to keep the same intensity in the next tournaments. Im a little bit worried about the serve to be honest...
Im still not so happy she's playing New Haven but looking at her season, playing a tournament before a Grand Slam has made wonders! Let's be confident! We need a revenge on Cetkovska anyway ^^

I've just been doing some Maths, looking at potential YEC scenarios after the US open

Schiavone 3543 with a QF 4043 but could lose to JJ, SF- 4443, overtaking Marion, but that would meaning taking out Serena so most likey not going to happen.

Petkovic 3451, with a QF 3951, likely, I guess Jie could possibly take her out, SF- 4351, overtaking Marion but would need to beat Woz for that.

Radwanska 2942, with a QF 3442, very likely, SF 3842, but she'd need to beat Sharapova before and I think that could happen :tape: Final, possible :tape:= 4342, overtaking Marion

Stosur 2926, with a QF 3426, very likely, SF 3826 Venus has withdraw so quite likely, Final, if she plays Zvonareva in the SF= NID 4326, overtaking Marion

Jankovic 2817 with a QF 3317 could lose to Fran, SF 3712 but would need to beat Serena, so, like Fran most likely not going to happen.

Of course this is assuming Serena wins the Open (well who has any chance of stopping here now Venus is out?) and there are no withdrawals from Istanbul.

My thoughts after taking a while to reflect (read: depressed)

At least she had her major breakthrough at the French Open this year :worship: and a very good showing at Wimbledon (beating Serena! :D), after failing to do anything there since 2007. It sucks that she always seems to be burned out this time of year (or whatever the reason is that she always loses early), but we ought to be really proud of her for the FO semi and Wimbly quarters.

Also, I really liked her shoes with the light blue accents. Light blue is my favourite colour... sooo, yes. :p

So JJ and Radwanska are both pretty much out of the question now.

With this loss Fran is at 3823 and she's not playing Tokyo.

It'd better if Andy lost later to Carla rather than in the QF. I'm fairly confident she won't make the semis.

Even if Sam beats Vera, she'd most likely play Pennetta in the semis, who she is 0-4 against in head to head.
