View Full Version : what does Monica have to do to beat DAVENPORT?

Nov 4th, 2002, 09:00 PM
OK.. so Monica's record against Davenport isn't great, but what does Monica need to do to win?? The last time I saw a Seles Vs Davenport match was Wimbledon 1999 QF... and the score was 6-7 6-4 6-0, Monica ran out of steam, Monica knows how to beat her but it will have to be in two sets or three pretty fast sets.

Both aren't the greatest movers, but both are the the best strikers out there, so it's goin to be who comes up with the shots. Monica will need to be prepared to use more angles to drive Davenport off the court on her way to VICTORY!

Monica wont have to do much. Linds have no motivation and move worst than Rosane Barr. Lindsay is falling and cant get up...

Well I don´t think Monica has a chance at all, look Davenport´s victories this year includes wins over Rubin, Dokic, Danilodou, Mauresmo, Mykina, Clijsters, Henin. players that have done quite well in the latter part of the year.

Here are Monica´s wins after Wimbledon Barbara Shwartz, Nagyova and Tanasugarn her best wins after wimbledon.

Yes Lindsay has been choking some in those finals she has played, but for her record she has not lost before the quarters, and that was just once, when she lost to Kim in Filderstat, since them all tournaments have been semis or better.

In order for Monica to win she has to get lot of first serves in, plus have a good returning off Lindsay´s serves. Lindsay to lose has to be on a pretty off day serving an make quite more errors off the ground. Lindsay´s game along with the sisters is the game that hurst Monica, cause Monica does not defend well and they (Lindsay and etc..) hit pretty big off their serves and groundies. Monica´s last win over Lindsay was in 97, a Lindsay that moved pretty poorly compared to now

In my opinion Lindsay to "Upset" Monica 6-2 6-4

Monica don`t have to do anything special !!

She only needs to play her tennis !!

Nov 4th, 2002, 09:55 PM
Monica never can win Davenport if Davenport's leg will be "hurted"..
Ok..to be honest..I think Monica has her chances. To hit hard and serve well...and of course, to move Lindsay. That's the most important thing I think.

Nov 4th, 2002, 11:14 PM
Last time they played Monica lost 6-3 7-5, but she should have won the second set (she was very tired after playing 3 three setters, and made lots of easy errors). The point is that we have no way of knowing what game Monica is going to bring after not playing for so long. If she brings her A game, she can beat Lindsay, especially is Lindsay struggles.

the only way Monica can beat Lindsay is that she must go to the Lindsay's court and hit Lindsay with her racquet!!! :):):):)

All Moni has to do is show up...:o ...Linds will be tired after 2 games:o

What are you talking about?!? Monica hasn't hardly had a chance to beat quality players after Wimbledon! She was injured up to the US Open and even then looked inhibited then...

Nov 5th, 2002, 01:14 AM
I dunno what to think of this match. Lindsay has been playing well lately (except in finals), and Monica hasn't played in a while. However Lindsay isn't too confident right now, I think it depends on Monica. If she's not rusty and she plays some great tennis, I think she will win.

Nov 5th, 2002, 01:26 AM
If she keeps trying to win over davenport hitting the ball harder, it wont do much. I think that if monica is fit enough so as to be ready for every shot and can move Lindsay a little bit just a Clijsters does, she'll have a good chance at it.

I REALLY HOPE MONICA WINS THIS. Sorry Lindsay but your game is sooo boring...

I think even as a Mon fan, people are putting too much expectation on Monica, the only way Monica can win is when I see arecent photo of her which looks like last year during summer hard court season

Whats up with the doubting Monica tirade? Did Monica have a winning record over Vee when she beat her in Austrailia? NO! I think Monica is gonna surprise the hell outta some people.

Nov 5th, 2002, 04:15 AM
She has to take control of the points early. That's the key to Monica beating anyone.

Nov 5th, 2002, 04:24 AM
Monica just win baby!!!

Nov 5th, 2002, 04:46 AM
Monica needs to serve well otherwise it's all LINDSAY!!!!!

Nov 5th, 2002, 05:51 AM
The key for her will be to guess on some key returns and really connect. She has said many times that even when she knows where Lindsay's serve is going that she cannot get there because of the placement. So breaking will be tough if Lindsay's serve is on. Even Lindsay will have rough patches so it will be necessary for Monica to really be strategic with her first serve placement and really protect her serve.

Nov 5th, 2002, 06:04 AM
Monica once said when she starts thinking about tactics and strategies, then she's in big trouble...
so I guess, Monica just has to be herself, play by instinct and passion... that's when she always comes up best.
but a lot depends on whether her foot is fully recovered...

I think it will be a closer match than most people think. Both have had injuries lately and I do think Monica will give it her all, as she always does. I am just sorry that my fave Lindsay has to play Monica in the first round. I would have liked to see Monica do well as I think she is a great person and a great player and a good example to the youngsters.

However, as Lindsay is my favourite I have to go with her but it could be quite a tussle.

Good Luck to Lindsay
 :wavey:

I agree with dh about controlling the point early, whether by serves, returns, or angled drives. A point in Monica's favour is the fact that it's Lindsay on the other side of the net; no time for anything other than all-out aggression, which usually helps Monica perform better, even after a long layoff.

Good luck to both, but GO MONICA!

Nov 5th, 2002, 11:29 AM
wow!!! a 9-2 record for lindsay over monica.....

i'm sure lindsay will take this one ;) no question about that!!!

Nov 5th, 2002, 10:23 PM
Sorry for Monica, I like her too but no chance for her to beat Lindsay. Monica the former queen already pass the torch to Lindsay as the present queen and will soon be pass to Kim when Lindsay is done.

GO Monica
Go Kim

Nov 5th, 2002, 10:33 PM
Yeah ok whatever?

Did chanda or Patty have a chance of beating Lindsay before this year?

Nov 5th, 2002, 10:44 PM
Monica's problem here is that, for practical purposes, Lindsay is a bigger, younger, more-in-shape Monica with a bigger serve.

I think her best bet is to go for extreme depth, even if it means not hitting as hard. Lindsay is at her best when she's stepping into the ball. A lot of her points end with her moving up to volley a weak return. She's not tending to net exactly, but her intent is forward. If Monica can return the ball to Lindsay's feet consistently, Lindsay can't tee off on Monica's returns.

These days, Monica often sacrifices depth for velocity. She's hitting the ball hard, but it lands five feet in front of the baseline. That's a dozen raw oysters and a light beer at the beach on the Fourth of July. (Gone before you know it.:)) That's right in Lindsay's wheelhouse, either side, right around waist height when it reaches the baseline.

If Monica can hit the baseline consistently, Lindsay will either have to play four feet behind the baseline, or pick the ball off her own shoetops. If she's trying either of those Monica will beat her.

I really can not wait for this match :D

Nov 5th, 2002, 11:13 PM
monica hasn't played from bahia lindsay has played but monica can always bring something unexpected (remember roland garros and masters two years ago)

Monica will suprise all you doubters. Linds has no stamina and if Monica takes a set, Linds can forget...I think that Monica maybe older but Linds has concrete bricks for feet. She is so over...

Nov 5th, 2002, 11:49 PM
Freethinker, stop jinxing Monica... Anyways good luck MONICA!!!

at least one of these two has-beens will make the quarters. some people said how unlucky either player is at having a tough opener. one has a passport to the quarters, the other will suffer an unsurprising 1r exit.

i think monica will move to the QFs, simply because lindsay cannot move at all :)

LOL...She sure cant...:D

Although Lindsay cannot move well, she's moving MUCH better than she was last year. Her shots are deep, and hard. I don't think Monica can handle those kinda shots right now becuz of her big break after the US OPEN. I say Lindsay takes the match in 2 sets...

Nov 7th, 2002, 05:27 PM
hmmm.. a lot of erroneous predictions ;-)

Nov 7th, 2002, 08:37 PM
Well, I didn't actually pick Monica, but I did see a way she could win.
