Singles Results, Qualifying First Round

[3]Chantal Chan def. Sophie Voorleck 6/0, 0/6, 6/4
Chantal and Sophie had a lopsided match. Voorleck even had a "golden set" in the second set, not dropping a point by winning all 24 possible points. Still, Chantal pulled it out in the end. But good news for Sophie - she will be a lucky loser!

Zaelly Ircha def. [4]Valerie Gallet 6/7(2), 6/3, 6/1
Zaelly was very nervous in her debut, losing the tiebreak to Valerie who rarely wins anything. She calmed down and pulled it out in the end.

Clair has inched her way up the rankings and could potentially be in the mix for a seeding at Wimbledon.

Vittoria was n the stands to cheer on Sophie but Candy didn't let it bother her as she marches onward.

Soren walks on through to 2nd Round
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/138/360486709_2e35750e01_z.jpg

8th Seed Samantha Soren defeated Elise Mesane in 3 sets today in the first round of 's-Hertogenbosch Women's Open.
The Canadian got off to a slow start by trailing Mesane 1-4 in the 1st set but fought her way back to win the set in a tiebreak amidst many expletives coming from Mesane's side of the court. Which is allowed these days in the FWTT Rule Book so to spice things up a bit. Soren complained about it but was reminded of the new rule.
Clearly flustered by the event, the Canadian quickly lost the 2nd set 6-2 as she went away from her attacking style and opted to push the ball back in play and hoping that Elise would self destruct. No matter as Samantha won the final set 6-3 after blowing 4 match points but finally won the match on a backhand dropshot winner. Unsurprisingly there were no handshakes after the match.
"I'm really happy with this win. I had a tough French Open and to be on grass again is nice but the hard courts of the summer are really what I'm looking forward to. I played well really, especially in that final set where I feel I rose to the challenge."
Next up is 4th seed Clair McKrain.

Yoona Im def. [LL]Chantal Chan 5/7, 7/6(6), 6/4
Another close match that had Yoona eek out the second set and capture the third to move on to the semifinals and end Chantal's "lucky" streak.

[8]Samantha Soren def. [4]Clair McKrain 6/4, 2/6, 6/4
Samantha was feeling very confident after her victory against Elise and it showed in today's victory against he higher ranked Clair.

[7]Candela Sanchez def. [2]Pamela Bowden 2/6, 7/6(5), 6/3
Candy had to fight back the Roland Garros champion in her home country by battling it out big time. Vittoria was again in the stands cheering against the experienced Spaniard.

[3]Pirilenko/Soren def. du Preez/Tenesova 6/4, 6/2
An easy win for Samantha and Yelena who had seemed to fall apart after their early loss at Roland Garros.

[4]Mesane/Im def. Abid/Ircha 7/6(4), 6/7(2), 7/5
Elise finally gets that win she's been desiring but it was with Yoona on the court with her.

2 wins in a day's work
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3289/3078202324_d49f0bfb4f_z.jpg

Two wins are what Samantha Soren has under her belt as she leaves the tennis grounds in 's-Hertogenbosch.
First off she had to play her singles match against 4th seed Clair McKrain in breezy and humid conditions with a constant threat of rain looming over the match. Similarly to her first match, Sam won her first match and lost the 2nd set 6-2. Then wasted 10 break point opportunities in two McKrain service games before finally breaking the score open to make it 4-3, it was smooth sailing after that as the Canadian won 6-4 in the third.
Two hours later, Soren and her Russian partner Yelena Pirilenko took to court against the unseeded duo of Perez and Tenesova. It ended in a straight forward 6-4 6-2 victory mainly due to Tenesova's volley errors and Soren's massive serve. The top seeds await them in the next round. McKrain and appropriately named Skankhova will be looking for some revenge for McKrain's singles loss to the Canuck.
"Yelena and I have been struggling to find the right combinations in our strategies this entire year. I've been having some doubts on whether I should try to find another partner, but Yelena is such a great person and has loads of talent within her. Truthfully, I haven't been amazing either. We just need a good week either this week or next week to really boost our 2011. Today was a good day, tomorrow will be tougher, no doubt."

Finals Bound
http://img1.browsebiography.com/images/gal/1410_Alicia_Molik_photo_1.jpg
Two Finals in one week is what Samantha Soren has gotten herself into in Holland.
In her singles semi final match, she faced Candela Sanchez in one of the more controversial and closely fought matches of the year. Soren was the clear crowd favorite, all of her won points were met with cheers while Sanchez was jeered. The Canadian fought off 2 match points in the final set tie-break at 6-4 and won three straight points to gain the victory. In an unsportsmanlike move from the Spaniard, she refused to shake the Canadian's hand. Sanchez needed to be escorted from the Center Court by security guards, while Soren left the court among flowers.
"I have no idea what just happened, I'm usually a non controversial player and today I think I was forced into the controversy by Perez and her haters."
The 8th seed had to re group and join Yelena Pirilenko on Court 1 for their semi final doubles match against the top seeds, McKrain/Skankhova. Skankhova played in her usual bikini, which drew the male crowds in. It wasn't much of a contest though as the pairing of Pirilenko/Soren scored a big upset and their biggest win of the year by defeating the top seeds in straight sets.
Yoona Im is also contesting both singles and doubles finals making it a rare double header. The same players are in both the singles and doubles finals!

Yoona Im suprises at Rosmalen!

After losing in the first round of qualifying in Birmingham, it was really in doubt whether Yoona was comfortable on grass or not. But this week, she proved that she could play on the green stuff, after downing 6th seed Pirilenko and Lucky Loser Chantal Chan. In the semifinals, she toughed it out against Cornelia du Preez, who beat her in the Brussels finals, 76 16 61. The match became lopsided after the first set, with Yoona coming home strong in the third set, hitting a powerful backhand winner to seal the match. In the finals she plays 8th seed Samantha Soren who is capping off a great week and returning back to form.

"I'm really happy another final and especially on grass, it's a good feeling and hopefully I can win the final this time. I always play a lot of sets in my matches, so I'm very tired but I'll give it my best shot. I don't know much about Soren, I don't know her game that well, so maybe I just play and see how it goes and figure it out along the way. "

Yoona also won through to the doubles finals, partnering Mesane, and attempts to win her 2nd doubles title. She is contesting in both the singles and doubles finals, and attempts t become only the 6th player this year to win both events.

"I'm excited to play doubles finals as well, I don't actually know how we're winning because she barely communicate with each other. I just want to win both singles and doubles an hopefully this allows me to play well in Wimbledon which is probably my 2nd favourite tournament in the whole year."

Double it Up
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c90/koolmansteven/sorentitle2.jpg?t=1277065271
She has done it again. Samantha Soren has won both singles and doubles titles in the same tournament. She did it in Memphis and she does it again in 's-Hertogenbosch.
In the singles finale Soren defeated the surprising finalist Yoona Im 7-6 in the third after 2 and a half hours. It was a classic display of a great server against an impeccable returner. Soren's aggressive play did pay off in the end by continuously putting the pressure on Im to hit crazy winners or a rare passing shot.
Right afterwards Yelena Pirilenko tagged along to win the doubles title by demolishing Mesane/Im in straight sets 7-6 6-3. The Canadian looked tired in the first few games and had to be picked up on Yelena's shoulders for the first set, but after the 1st set win everything looked sunny from there as Soren completed the double.
It's Samantha's 8th singles title overall, first since the Memphis victory. It is also Soren's 9th doubles title overall, 4th with Pirilenko.
Things are looking great for the Canadian as she heads on a plane to the famed lawns of Wimbledon.
