Can she finally break the Eastbourne SF curse?

Really looking forward to this. Though I would like her to play Birmingham, if shes tired, she must rest. She has a long break after Wimbledon though so pushing on for the next 3-4 weeks would be nice.

I'm very excited too, but I don't want to see that passive tennis we saw on the grass last year :tears:

You're right about Birmingham. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If she is feeling up to playing, she should really make the final.

Also, she should be at eight in the race now so if she can keep up this consistency, there's a good chance she could qualify for the YEC, and that's not taking the possibility of withdrawals into account.

She just said during her press conference that she wants to rest, probably with her family. Hope she will play Birmingham.

She seemed very passive all last year but shes really stepped up the aggresiveness this year I think and its making the difference. I hope grass is the same.

I really hope she withdraws from Eastbourne. She hasn't stopped playing for so long... If she wants to shine in Wimbledon, she really should have some rest.
In 2007, she only got to 4th round. This year she played 2 more matches, and it can make the difference!

Disappointing for me as I was looking foward to seeing her play Birmingham again but the right decision.Obviously,I'm getting only second-hand info, but I heard that Birmingham was kind of an ugly, industrial town...not really worth seeing...and it would be kind of insane for Marion to jump right into all 3 grass tourneys after deep runs at Strasbourg and RG.Sorry that you're gonna miss her, though;better luck to you soon:hatoff:

Not to be a negative nancy. If Venus is still playing in eastbourne, their is a possiblity that Marion could draw her in the first round. So hopefully that will not happen.

I've never been to Birmingham. You could try to visit the Birmingham in Alabama one time;it's got a lovely history as a town where police used fire hoses on civil rights protesters. However,I seriously doubt that they'll get a WTA tourney at any time in the near future,so you're not likely to see Marion:hearts: THERE,either;)

SF eastbourne and 4th round wimbledon seems to be her average runWe all know about the etiquette at the pristine all-England club, but maybe Marion would have more freedom at Eastbourne to go on court with the same make-up displayed in your avy;).I'd pay good money to see the reaction:lol:

Slightly bitter about Serena taking Marion's top 8 seeding from her but its to be expected I guess! At least shes gonna get Sharapova, Petra, Serena or Fran though, rather than Vika/Caro/Bepa/Na which she'd get in the 13-16 bracket.

There is just so much mental baggage against Azarenka from the last two completed losses:

.Stanford 6-3 3-1* 40-30 and misses a return on break point, or so I read. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I didn't see the match.

.Montreal the four set points in the tie-break- 2 missed returns IIRC

It would be her best victory in a long time if she could some how get the win here, but as you said, Ferg it's very unlikely.

Plus, whilst it's great she's back in the top 10 her record against top 10 players this year is 0-5, not counting the Clijsters win. I hate that stat.

One thing's for sure, she's going to have to serve well, certainly much better than today.

Saw LDL vs Chaky in Rosmalen, she plays well. But Marion is a real tougher opponent. I just listened Marion on fft site, she explains that on grass, she really knows what she has to do. Gameplans are really clear. She wanted to finish R1 as soon as possible in order not to have to come back day after. She has known that Krystina Pliskova was wimbledon junior 2010 champion. It means that she could have played well on grass.

Marion just explained on TV what happened :

It seems that court 3 is one of the slowest court of Wimbledon. And Sometimes, it was like she was playing on clay.

Confirmation on fft website : http://www.fft.fr/wimbledon/2011/?id=7402 Her voice seems ok. She explained that at 1-1 final set, she felt really bad. lol, she proposes herself as new court 3 gardener for next year.

If she's going to beat Serena at some point, now might be her best chance, don't you think? If the first set isn't close, then it's probably all over, but if she can manage to hang in there in the first set, maybe some doubts will creep into Serena's mind again. Is the comfortable win over Kirilenko enough to dispel any thoughts about how she could have gone out in both the first and second rounds? Who knows, but we can hope that Serena might still feel vulnerable if she isn't dominating her opponent in the way that she expects to be. :)

Of course all this relies on Marion coming out and having a game that is clicking on the day, because summoning mental toughness alone won't be enough against Serena. I don't feel super confident about that, but remain ever hopeful. :p

Yes I hope so too. Plus when your opponent has played two long matches as well, it's not really a good excuse. If she loses, I think it will be because Serena is a multi-time GS champ, and there would be no shame in losing to her. :)

Also, I hope that everyone understands that I would in NO way wish this upon anyone just so that Marion could win a tennis match... but pulmonary embolism can cause varying degrees of damage to your lungs. Just because Serena survived it, it doesn't mean that her lung capacity hasn't been affected in some way. Even a slight loss of lung capacity could be devastating for an elite athlete, although it might not be a big deal to a normal person. I expect this is something that Serena has been worrying about before coming back, because she won't know how much it's affected her until she's really tested. It's a good sign for her that she got through some tight matches, but she looked quite out of breath when I was watching her.

Anyway, just pointing out that you can't really compare Marion being tired, to Serena potentially not being able to absorb as much oxygen... especially if Marion gets at least one day to rest.

PS... is Ronoc supposed to be Conor backwards? It never crossed my mind, haha! I'd wondered if it was a Celtic name/word for something. :p

What Marion does is within the rules, even when she bounces around when her partner is receiving in doubles :p

Also, watch how much you are allowed to do during points, without even hiding that you're trying to distract your opponent. Also, poor Federer that he's so good his opponents have to resort to this.

VSZvItWSRt4

tsyS_8Z7BKs

I really don't think that she deliberately incorporated the bouncing into her game to distract the opponent. It's just her thing to focus and keep her intensity. :bounce: It's strange to me that fans of players who scream harder than Marion ever has, actually *during the points* are prepared to criticise her for something she does while waiting to receive. She bounces around during her own service games and between games too. If the opponent is distracted, it's their problem.

In fact, if the opponent gets distracted, they should try copying Marion to keep their own mind focused. :p

Difference is though that Jo and Tommy are big showmen and knew that they were going to get hammered anyway and just threw in something to make the crowd laugh  Not sure about Jo but Tommy is very good friends with Fed and his reaction shows it

I know, the look Fed gives him at the net is great. :D

It is funny though, that the umpire will allow somebody to blatantly try to put their opponent off like that. Yet if a towel slips off a chair courtside, the point must be replayed. Tennis is so weird sometimes and full of contradictions. If you shout something out during a point you'd be given it against you... unless the thing you shouted was "AAAAARGHH" in which case it's fine lol.

LMAO @ Ferg xD

I was wondering about the doubles because I witnessed an incident at a league match where in a mixed match...the opponents where serving to the man and the lady from basically like swivelling over and back....the server shouts out " you cant do that.." and a row broke out LMAO. I was laughing alot :P

But I just wondered if our Marion did it - and she does :P Allezzzz! :D

What Marion does is within the rules, even when she bounces around when her partner is receiving in doubles :p

Also, watch how much you are allowed to do during points, without even hiding that you're trying to distract your opponent. Also, poor Federer that he's so good his opponents have to resort to this.

This is hilarious!
Also, remember what Radwanska and Michael Chang did to distract their opponents.

Anyway,I'd hate to see that carry over into the woman's game;if it did,we could all ante up and pay for kickboxing lessons for Marion:hearts: just to make sure her self-defense skills were up to par:)

Even some folks who don't like Marion are conceding that she looks less than 100% out there;will look forward to a medical report from one of you when I get back from class:unsure:

It's a shame we didn't get to see her close to her best today like in the French Open QF but all the tennis was bound to catch up with her lately.

She's had a great run these past few months and given me two very memorable high quality tennis matches (the Govortsova and Pennetta matches):worship:

And now she can take a well deserved rest until Stanford. I really want that US Open QF!

Shame about today

But she had some really good weeks (final in Strasbourg, SF at RG, title in Eastbourne and now a QF) :yeah:

She had to fight so hard this week against LDL & Flavia. She was so close to defeat in R2 & R3. So it's pretty amazing how she managed to get as far as she did :worship:

Really didn't like that Marion had to play against Sabine as I like both players. But luckily it was in the QF and not in the 1st round as she had to receive a WC.

Counted about a handful of posters here(whom I'm familiar with) who have been highly critical of Marion in the past---and were won over these past two Slams by her valor and fighting spirit:)

In her immediate post-match interview she sometimes looks at the camera instead of the interviewer. Does she always do that?
