Singles Results, First Round Bottom Half

[3]Nthamangela Mbangu def. Yoona Im 6/4, 1/6, 6/3
A tough first round match as Yoona has shown success lately and Nthama is a clay star. The Botswanian toughed it out and advances to the second round.

Alijah Pemovic def. Ella Felivitch 6/2, 2/6, 10/8
Alijah has been battling her way on the tour for a few months and success is slowly coming her way. Meanwhile, Ella continues her terrible slump.

Jessamine Minella def. Manon Arcangioli 6/3, 4/6, 7/5
Jessamine's clay season has been one to admire and defeats the junior Manon in a tight match.

Brenda Gaga-Maduga def. [16]Yelena Pirilenko 7/6(4), 5/7, 12/10
Brenda's debut on the tour is spectacular as she defeats the seeded Pirilenko in an epic match.

Clair McKrain def. [9]Saba Abid 4/6, 7/6(4), 7/5
Clair performs better in the grand slams and took out the top tenner, Saba in an upset.

Elise Mesane def. Emilia Jarocka-Pottinger 7/6(3), 7/6(5)
The French crowd was in full force today for Elise who hasn't played much this clay season. It worked as she took out Em in a pair of tiebreakers.

Cornelia du Preez def. Karen Amato 7/5, 6/2
Fresh off of winning her biggest title ever, Cornelia starts of RG with a straight set win over the Italian.

[5]Luna-Willow Bartoli def. Hafdis Bjork Runarsdottir 7/5, 6/4
Luna's win over the Icelandic wonder sets up an all-South African second round match.

[7]Jane Wong def. Lindsay Raymond 6/2, 6/3
Jane's win over Lindsay was almost too easy today as she moves on.

Kathleen Pryde-Degman def. Alesandra Kirilova 7/6(6), 6/3
Kirilova almost took the first set but it wasn't meant to be as the former #2 player upends the Russian.

Amita Maria Young def. Lindsay Galbraith 7/5, 6/2
Very quiet from Lindsay lately and Amita takes advantage to move on.

[10]Jennifer Casanova def. Daria Afanasyeva 7/6(2), 3/6, 6/3
Jennifer won this thing two years ago and looked sharp today in her strong win against Daria.

[13]Fleri Hingisafrilia def. Vittoria Perez 7/6(6), 7/6(3)
This was probably the toughest first round match and Fleri was able to edge out Vittoria in an entertaining match.

Pamela Bowden def. Sophie Voorleck 6/3, 7/6(3)
Pammy could make a good impression here and get herself seeded for Wimbledon with a good showing.

Chloe Gray def. Anastasia Nemayeva 2/6, 7/5, 6/4
Chloe takes out Anastasia and denies a fourth meeting of the year between Taliamanosoko and Nemayeva.

[2]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. Jookarae Mensarb 7/6(3), 5/7, 8/6
Ruflina's really struggled this year and had a tough first rounder and barely walked away the winner.

Regla Torres hoping for a good Roland Garros run

http://www.theimproper.com/fashion/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/natalieportman-dior-front.jpg

Former world No. 2 and Roland Garros finalist Regla Torres hasn't had a great 2011. Distracted by off-court activities and romances, the star's been busy promoting perfumes, films and just about anything but tennis. But at a grand slam and on her favourite surface she is hoping to capture some of her old glory.

She took an important step by winning her first round match against an excellent opponent in Verena Jameka Starr winning 6-3 6-2. The Spaniard looked in control early on and looked happy and concentrated on the red clay in Paris.

Her next match will be a tough one as she faces 15th seed Harper Johnson. She said in an interview, "I'm just taking it one match at a time." Torres is still trying to rebuild her tennis career and said her game is a work in progress and still feels she has a few good years of tennis in her.

Singles Results, Second Round Top Half

[1]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Paula Masterton 7/5, 6/2
And with this, Paula bid's adieu to the singles tournament at Roland Garros as she succumbs to the world's #1 player.

Candela Sanchez def. [14]Marteena Huubere 7/5, 5/7, 12/10
These matches are always tight between these two but Candela has had a better clay season and that match play helped her out.

[11]Giuseppina Benedetti def. Berenika Wojnarowska 1/6, 6/2, 8/6
Giusa came in the favorite here last year and now she's out of the top 10. Regardless, without the pressure she is playing much better.

Rita Cebolla def. Aveta Tenesova 3/6, 7/5, 7/5
The match of the unseeded saw the Spanish onion take out Aveta in three tight sets.

Annalisa Benedetti def. Elena Skankhova 6/2, 0/6, 7/5
With Annalisa's win, that puts two Italians in the third round, something we aren't sure if it's happened before or not.

[12]Martine Kartincova def. Caroline Smith 6/2, 1/6, 12/10
Caroline was favored in this match despite being unseeded. However, Martine usually saves something special for the Grand Slams.

[15]Harper Johnson def. Regla Torres 7/5, 0/6, 6/3
Regla's heart was left on the court today as she played herself out, but we know for certain she is back. Harper had to play her best tennis to move on to the third round.

Yanina Wickmayer def. [4]Athea Kane 6/3, 6/4
The newbie has upset the reigning champion, who is sure to drop out of the top 8 after Roland Garros.

Doubles Results, First Round Top Half

Kane/Smith def. Afanasyeva/Im 5/7, 7/5, 14/12
All 4 players were eliminated from singles, so this match was very important and it was evident by the hard fought scoreline.

Wickmayer/Wojnarowska def. Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman 7/5, 4/6, 10/8
Yanina and Berenika upset Fleri and Kathleen today in dramatic fashion. We thought the favored pair would do well here after their decent clay season.

Gaga-Maduga/Galbraith def. Graf/Huubere 3/6, 7/5, 7/5
Another first round upset as the newbies take out the veteran pair.

Chan/Vladimirescu def. McKrain/Skankhova 6/2, 0/6, 6/4
This was the match of dark horse doubles team. Either has the potential to go far in any tournament they enter.

Fakethea Kane?

Rumor says defending champion Athea Kane was paid a lot of money to lose her second round match.

Asked about it next to the Roland Garros library Kane denies the story.

"Please, this doesn't even exist in tennis."

Alijah Pemovic def. [3]Nthamangela Mbangu 7/6(1), 7/6(2)
With yesterday's shocker of Athea's loss, Africa hasn't fared too well at Roland Garros as Alijah stuns Nthama in a pair of tiebreakers.

Brenda Gaga-Maduga def. Jessamine Minella 5/7, 7/5, 8/6
Meanwhile, the new African from Somalia is able to take out Jessamine, who has had quite a decent clay season.

Clair McKrain def. Elise Mesane 0/6, 6/1, 11/9
Elise and the French crowd could not overcome Clair today. For the first time in quite some time, we heard some whistles as Elise exited the court.

Cornelia du Preez def. [5]Luna-Willow Bartoli 6/2, 6/3
This result doesn't surprise us as Cornelia has played superior this spring and Luna hasn't.

[7]Jane Wong def. Kathleen Pryde-Degman 6/0, 7/6(2)
Jane continues her success by stopping Kathleen in the second set tiebreaker. It would be very sentimental if she were to go all the way here.

[10]Jennifer Casanova def. Amita Maria Young 6/3, 1/6, 6/3
Jennifer's confidence is far superior than last year where she was the defending champion. Her victory today over Amita showed us that belief.

Pamela Bowden def. [13]Fleri Hingisafrilia 7/6(2), 4/6, 6/4
Fleri had an extremely tough draw with Vittoria in the first round and then clay dark horse Pamela in this round. She fell short today.

Chloe Gray def. [2]Ruflina Taliamanosoko 2/6, 6/4, 6/4
Ruflina has made the Roland Garros finals 5 times (and the past 2 years) but she was upset today by Chloe who has returned to the tour. With this loss, only 2 Africans remain in the draw but they hold 4 of the top 5 rankings.

Doubles Results, First Round Bottom Half

Nemayeva/Perez def. Cebolla/Sanchez 7/5, 7/5
Vittoria had to take out her Fed Cup partners with the assistance of Anastasia.

G. Benedetti/Raymond def. Bowden/Kirilova 1/6, 6/4, 6/1
This match saw long time doubles partners square off with the Italian and Canadian moving on.

Pemovic/Tenesova def. Mensarb/Young 1/6, 6/3, 6/4
Both teams are very good friends and this was an entertaining match with Alijah and Aveta coming out on top.

du Preez/Mbangu def. Amato/A. Benedetti 5/7, 7/6(3), 7/5
Despite the African players not having success in singles, Cornelia and Nthama were able to come through and fight back against the Italians.

Ladies Singles: 2nd Round
Harper Johnson (15), United States, def. Regla Torres, Spain
7-5, 0-6, 6-3

Post Match Interview Highlights:
Johnson: "I'm thrilled to win a few matches here in Paris. I reached the semifinals here a few years ago ('08) but haven't had much success in singles since then. So, winning back to back matches here, after winning a few rounds in Madrid and taking the doubles title in Strasbourg (w/ Siri Cornetsson) has really improved my confidence out there."

Johnson: "Regla is an amazing player with a long, long history of success. Especially on clay. She's beaten me a few times on this surface and I've only managed to beat her once on clay, and that was in Fed Cup. So, I knew going in that this match was going to be incredibly tough. Honestly, after the way she played in the second set, I had serious doubts about coming out the winner. But, I hung in there and her level dropped a bit. So, that was the difference today. I'm glad I held on and stayed focused."

Johnson: (on her mixed doubles loss with Ricardis Berankis) "Oh, well. We had a lot of fun. We won a round and played a great match in the second. He's a great guy and still agreed to play with me here even though he withdrew from singles. So, that's kind of crazy. In the end, it's probably better for him to get home and get some rest before Wimbledon."

Johnson: (on her doubles prospects with Siri) "Siri has been a little worried, I think. Winning Strasbourg was kind of unexpected and we don't want to get our hopes up. But, we won here two years ago. So, we know we can do it. And, we know we can play our best on clay. So, we're going to go out there and play our best. If we don't do well? We've got Wimbledon in a few weeks and it's now the only slam we haven't won together. So, we'll really, REALLY focus on that one." (*smile)

Johnson: "Who do I think will win the title here? Well, me of course. (*laughter) If I didn't think so, why would I be here, right?"

Singles Results, Third Round

[1]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Candela Sanchez 7/5, 6/2
Ziyi is performing well again on the big stage and has yet to drop a set in Paris. We thought there could be a slight upset here with the recent success of Candela, but wasn't meant to be.

Rita Cebolla def. [11]Giuseppina Benedetti 7/6(5), 5/7, 11/9
Rita upset the Italian to advance to her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal. She now faces the daunting task of taking on the world's #1 player.

Annalisa Benedetti def. [12]Martine Kartincova 7/5, 7/6(4)
The Italians will have one player in the quarterfinal as Annalisa is the surprise here, taking out the current Wimbledon champion.

[15]Harper Johnson def. Yanina Wickmayer 6/3, 1/6, 6/4
Harper was very confident after her defeat of Regla and played a surprise player in Yanina in the third round. She went to work, and despite losing the second set, looked very strong.

Brenda Gaga-Maduga def. Alijah Pemovic 4/6, 7/6(6), 6/4
Brenda has still yet to lose on the FWTT and upsets Alijah today after fighting off a match point in the second set. What a debut - quarterfinals of a grand slam!

Clair McKrain def. Cornelia du Preez 1/6, 7/6(2), 6/2
This was heavily favored to go to Cornelia after her recent success, but Clair has gotten a reputation for performing well during the slams. She had to fight from behind, but was able to advance to the Roland Garros quarterfinals.

[10]Jennifer Casanova def. [7]Jane Wong 7/6(7), 2/6, 6/2
This was the most intense third round match of the day as both players have won this event in the past. Jennifer was able to overcome Jane and book her spot in the quarters.

Pamela Bowden def. Chloe Gray 6/4, 2/6, 7/5
Pammy oh Pammy is quietly creeping through this draw and not making a bit of noise. Today she has another well fought match with a win against Chloe.

Doubles Results, Second Round

[1]Cornetsson/Johnson def. Kane/Smith 7/6(3), 6/4
Neither Harper nor Siri sounded very confident about their chances in doubles, but Harper is bringing something special to the court and gave the first loss to Athea and Caroline.

Wickmayer/Wojnarowska def. [8]Pirilenko/Soren 4/6, 7/5, 12/10
The defending champions have been eliminated at the hands of Yanina and Berenika - the unheralded team.

[5]Bartoli/Kartincova def. Gaga-Maduga/Galbraith 6/4, 6/2
Luna-Willow and Martine have slumped this year, but a good and easy win today looks very promising.

Chan/Vladimirescu def. [3]Felivitch/Mesane 6/3, 1/6, 6/4
Ella and Elise have lost that spark but Cristina and Chantal have enjoyed putting it out as they move to the quarterfinals.

Nemayeva/Perez def. [4]Henriksson/Jarocka-Pottinger 6/2, 2/6, 11/9
Anastasia and Vittoria keep up their incredible play and defeat the current Wimbledon champions in an epic three-setter.

[7]Abid/Masterton def. G. Benedetti/Raymond 7/5, 7/6(2)
Another surprise win from Saba and Paula as they take out Giusa and Lindsay.

[6]Wong/Zianzhi def. Pemovic/Tenesova 6/1, 7/6(5)
A routine match for the Chinese team as they book their way into the quarterfinals against rivals Jennifer and Ruflina.

[2]Casanova/Taliamanosoko def. du Preez/Mbangu 6/4, 7/6(1)
The elder players were able to limit the shots of the youngsters and move on to the quarterfinals.

Clair McKrain def. Cornelia du Preez 1/6, 7/6(2), 6/2

Sitting in Clair McKrain's Parisian apartment, the evening light slowly faded as another day of Roland Garros came to a close. McKrain, a figure proud of her accomplishment of being a Roland Garros quarterfinalist, seemed as if in a daze as she peered across the city landscape. McKrain seems to save something special, as of late, when it comes to the grand slam events. She started the year in grand fashion, making her first ever semifinal at a major at the Australian Open. Some thought it was a sign of many great things to come for Clair in the next few months, but those predictions became void, until now. "After the Australian Open, my tennis didn't live up to expectations and I had some really tough early round losses in a lot of tournaments," McKrain explains, "But I knew it wasn't going to be like this always." After losing in the first round of both Indian Wells and Miami, McKrain decided to take a step back and do some much needed self reflection. "I consider Indian Wells as my home tournament and to lose so early was disheartening. Then in Miami, I lost early again, and that bothered me because I'm a former finalist and I know what it takes to get to the later stages of that tournament, and I just let myself down." After a mediocre clay season, things began to turn around in Strasbourg when McKrain made the semifinals before losing to Jennifer Casanova. "I knew at that point that my game had finally come to a level I felt comfortable with when beginning Roland Garros. I figured I'd win a match or two, and be happy. However, I have played much better tennis than expected and I feel as if I'm dreaming."

Clair's campaign for the Roland Garros title began with a clash against the 9th seed Saba Abid. "I knew that match was winable, because I have a very good head-to-head against Saba and I had recently defeated her in Madrid on clay. I entered in with a gameplan I had used before and it worked. It was still a very close match, and could have gone either way, but I played the bigger points better," said Clair, whose face lit up as she brought up her 2nd round encounter, "Next up was Elise [Mesane]. Oh my gosh, that one was crazy. It was the first match I'd ever played on Court Philippe Chatrier. I was so nervous, that I got bagelled the first set," Clair laughed, "The crowd was against me completely, which was expected, but I got things together after losing the first game of the 2nd and won the next 9 games in a row. In the third Elise then won the next 5 games and served for the match at 5-3. Somehow I broke her, and ended up winning 11-9 in the 3rd. I saved 4 match points! I still don't know how. I can't remember anything that happened after 5-5 until I won. Elise congratulated me at net, and then the crowd started booing her. That upset me because she had played a great match, and lost because I got lucky a little bit more than her." Clair's next match was against Cornelia du Preez, the recent Brussels champion. "I knew this was going to be a very tricky match. Going in, she was the odds maker's favorite to win the match because clay is her best surface. I called Elena [Skankhova] to ask for advice, because she had recently beaten du Preez on clay in Charleston, so that definitely helped."

Next up for Clair is Brenda Gaga-Maduga. Both players will be in it to win it. Will Clair win her 3rd career grand slam quarterfinal against the undefeated newcomer? Or will she lose and be sent on to the grass courts? Either way, this Roland Garros will be one in which Clair McKrain remembers for many years to come.

Women's Singles: 3rd Round
Harper Johnson (15), United States, def. Yanina Wickmayer, Belgium
6-3, 1-6, 6-4

Post Match Interview: (Highlights)
Johnson: "I'm absolutely thrilled. I had another letdown in the second set. But, I've been able to reserve energy for that final set and get it done. I'm really happy."

Johnson: "She's a very talented player. She moves really well and isn't afraid to step in and dictate points from inside the baseline. But, you know, when you do that, you run the risk of unforced errors. And, those started to add up there in the third set. She was up 2-0 and then missed a few forehands long and wide and I think it got into her head. But, moving forward, I can see her really doing well and winning some big matches."

Johnson: "I've never played Annalisa (Benedetti) before. And, it looks like she's playing very similarly to me this tournament. So, this might be a really tough match. She's young and really has nothing to lose. So, you always have to be cautious going into matches like that. Because, they'll really swing for the fences and if they connect that day, it could be trouble. So, I'm definitely not taking her lightly."

Johnson: "Siri and I laughed about it after the match, because we sort of went in with a bad feeling. Like, we were preparing ourselves to lose. But, we got onto court and everything clicked. We never faced a breakpoint in the first set and were able to take control from 3-2 in the second. So, moving forward, whatever happens, we've at least made sure we didn't go out in the first match."

Johnson: "I'm not really sure what happened to Caroline (Smith) there at the end. She was crying, I saw that. But, I haven't spoken to her since we shook hands at the net. I hope she's okay. She's a sweet girl with a huge amount of potential. She was just this big ball of energy during Fed Cup this year. And, I hope that whatever she's going through, she can sort it out and get back on court. Because, she's got a big career ahead of her, I think."

Annalisa won her match against Martine Kartnicova and qualified for QF in Paris. She won in straight sets but with a very close score, 7-5 7-6 (4). Annalisa was able to win most important points with a great serve and backhand and she was able to beat the 2010 Wimbledon Champs.

After the match Annalisa said: "After I won I realized I was in the quarter finals," Benedetti commented. "Many people think I'm not so good on clay, but I think now they should change a little bit.

"I never thought I could be in the quarter finals of Roland Garros. I thought I could do it at the other three, but never here. I'm the only italian player in QF so I'm honored to be there and fight for my nation".

"I'll try to continue my dream run, but I've just done more than what I exepected. I'm only 18 and I'll live every moment of next match with a great smile on my face".

"I'd like to say thank you to the French crowd that supported me a lot".
Annalisa will play her first career grand slam quarter final. She played in Australia and reached the second round. This year she won an ITF event in New Dehli.

Buitenzorg has spotted something that annoys me about these rankings

(It is because people ahead also got R1 losses but had considerably more to defend. Athea is 12th before QFs.)

Singles Results, Quarterfinals

[1]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Rita Cebolla 7/5, 7/6(4)
Ziyi continues to solidify her lead as the #1 player in the world with another straight set win. This time it was against the little onion from Spain who was happy to make the quarterfinals.

[15]Harper Johnson def. Annalisa Benedett 7/6(5), 6/7(4), 13/11
This battle royale had the crowd in full force as both players had bravado, confidence, and self-assurance they would win. It was a full quality match worthy of a Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Brenda Gaga-Maduga def. Clair McKrain 7/5, 3/6, 7/5
The newbie Somalian has made a splash on the tour and still has not lost a match. This time she took out the tough and scrappy Clair in three tight sets and now finds herself in the Roland Garros semifinals.

Pamela Bowden def. [10]Jennifer Casanova 4/6, 7/6(4), 7/5
Pammy has been chugging along all year long earning terrific wins like this one against Jennifer. Her amazing consistency this year has paid off and she is now further in a Grand Slam than in her entire career.

Wickmayer/Wojnarowska def. [1]Cornetsson/Johnson 7/5, 2/6, 6/3
Harper was so tired in this match, it was amazing that she was even able to make it on the court. Berenika and Yanina took advantage and have booked a spot in the semifinals.

Chan/Vladimirescu def. [5]Bartoli/Kartincova 6/4, 1/6, 6/3
Boy oh boy - Cristina and Chantal are in the big leagues now after this incredible win. They've done well in the smaller events and that hard work has paid off.

Nemayeva/Perez def. [7]Abid/Masterton 6/3, 5/7, 12/10
We think Vittoria and Anastasia will be seeded at Wimbledon with this epic win over Paula and Saba. They know face the #2 team in the world in the semifinals.

[2]Casanova/Taliamanosoko def. [6]Wong/Zianzhi 7/6(1), 2/6, 7/5
It's always tough when Ruffy and Jane play, but Taliamanosoko had to be there for Jennifer who was severely disappointed after her singles quarterfinal loss.

[1]Paula Masterton/Adam Holmes def. [13]Elena Skankhova/Justin Timberlake 7/6(2), 3/6, 6/3
Paula and Adam are mixed doubles royalty as they continue to do well whenever they play. They stop Elena and superstar Justin in the semifinals.

Pamela Bowden/Maurio Maurer def. Aveta Tenesova/Lukas Nouhy 1/6, 7/6(5), 6/1
What an event for Pamela as she is now in the semifinals of this event and the singles and ends the dream of Aveta and Lukas.

Giuseppina Benedetti/Fabio Fognini def. [15]Ruflina Taliamanosoko/Ikumbo Kimjumba 7/5, 7/6(1)
Giusa and Ruffy have a great relationship with competitive matches. This match was enjoyed by all on the court, especially Giusa and Fabio who advance.

[5]Marteena Huubere/Nenad Zimonjic def. Nthamangela Mbangu/Mapeu Mbangu 7/5, 3/6, 7/5
Marteena's all too familiar with the grounds at Roland Garros and has lots of experience in these big matches. That carried the day in this match against Nthama and Mapeu.

Singles Results, Semifinals

[15]Harper Johnson def. [1]Ziyi Zianzhi 6/4, 0/6 6/3
Harper has become known in this tournament for her second set breakdowns. Today was such a tough challenge against Ziyi, we just new she had to win the first set to stay in the match. She did, and of course was blanked in the second set in which Harper remained calm, cool, and collected. She then went on to play like the way she did in Melbourne in 2010 (where she won the title) to defeat the top player in the world.

Pamela Bowden def. Brenda Gaga-Maduga 7/5, 5/7, 14/12
This match was EPIC. Brenda just debuted on the tour THIS WEEK and marched all the way to the semifinals defeating well seasoned and experienced players. Pamela, meanwhile, has had a phenomenal 2011 and played with confidence and vigor on the way to this match. When the two faced each other it was tight from the first 18-stroke point all the way to the very ending rally that gave Pamela the win and her advancement to her first Grand Slam final ever.

Doubles Results, Semifinals

Wickmayer/Wojnarowska def. Chan/Vladimirescu 2/6, 7/5, 6/4
This match was most certainly and upset. Cristina and Chantal have played so well this year, we thought for sure they would take out the unheralded pair of Yanina and Berenika. It wasn't meant to be as we have a surprise finalist.

[2]Casanova/Taliamanosoko def. Nemayeva/Perez 7/6(1), 7/6(6)
This semifinal had the more dominating teams. Vittoria and Anastasia had beaten Jen and Ruffy a few weeks ago so we thought it could go either way. Instead, the American and Botswanian fought pretty well to advance to their first ever Grand Slam finale.
