du Preez ready for Roland Garros challenge
Cape talent wins first career title in Brussels

http://i53.tinypic.com/30ngb61.jpg
A relieved teenager joins the list of winners

Cornelia du Preez (17) finally converted her good winning record into a full FWTT title in Brussels, Belgium this Sunday, triumphing in a series of three-setters and finally dismissing Korean youngster Im Yoo-Na 6/3 2/6 7/5 in a tight final. The South African didn't display her best tennis throughout, but always pulled herself together towards the end of the matches.

Du Preez dismissed concerns that she had been playing too much tennis in the week, playing 15 sets with three of the world top 12 as her opponents on the way to the title. "This is the best form of practice," du Preez claimed, "being out there against the top players and finding the winning formula." Du Preez had lost her previous two finals at tour level, in Moscow and Estoril, but was still a favourite and playing a non-seed on the big stage seemed to help.

The real challenge was the semi-final against Jane Wong, world number 7 and with 20 singles titles to her name, where du Preez never looked particularly likely to win until 5/5 in the second set. Then she saved two match points with good serves down the T, and changed her style slightly, drawing the pace down in an attempt to force Wong to comeup with winning moves. Although it didn't win her many friends in the Belgian crowd, it was effective; it earned a tie-break in which du Preez won relatively easily, 7/2, with a netted forehand from Wong after a long cross-court rally.

The final set was much the same, with long games, long rallies and caution from both players; the occasional dropshot from Wong was the only real variety, but it was too errant to give the Asian much net gain. After three hours, the youngster surprisingly had more stamina, and served well to give herself a chance of winning the match. Coming up with some good returns, du Preez broke on her first match point of the match, and let out a roar of relief.

In the final, du Preez and Im provided variable tennis; du Preez won three straight games from 3/3, but, as usual, could not close it out in two. Her stamina still prevailed, though, as she attacked the Koreans serve with vigour in the final set and reaped rewards - breaking her four times including to 6/5 in the decider. Du Preez served slightly better than Im, which was the key in a tightly fought match.

Du Preez now enters the Roland Garros tournament at a career-high world #17, a ranking which was starting to plateau as she completed her first full season, but was boosted by this good effort in Belgium. The South African appears to have found her form just in time on the red clay, and TV viewers at home can look forward to the tournament with decent hopes of the South African dark horse going deep into the singles draw - where she faces the Italian Karen Amato.
