View Full Version : Generation Suck is stepping up!

It's starting to seem like 2011 will be the year when women's top tennis finally undergoes a generational change.

Caro is the clear leader in the rankings. Azarenka is starting to show consistency at the highest level. Kvitova beat Clijsters in the Paris final and is now in the Madrid semis. Goerges won Stuttgart and is also in the Madrid semis. Petkovic, Pavly and Aga can all be expected to be in the top 15 or better by year end.

Among the older players, the Sisters and Kim are constantly injured and close to retirement. Stosur, Franny and Jankovic are far from their best and unlikely to rebound significantly. Sharapova and Ivanovic are both still young but have already been in the elite for several years and now seem to be in a permanent stalemate. Only Li Na and Zvonareva are likely to remain top contenders over the next 2-4 years.

I'm sure people on this forum strongly disagrees as to whether this development is encouraging or not. For my own money I think the future of the WTA tour looks exciting indeed!

They are. The problem is that the quality of matches and audience size are getting lower and lower...

WTA needs some sort of heated rivalry or a controversial character who actually wins slams. The new girls are all BFF's and that sadly makes the game/players very boring and forgettable.

LOL! Wozniacki is queen of the Generation Suck. :inlove:

Wozniacki is friends with Radwanska, Azarenka and she likes Serena a lot, who seems to like her too... does that make their matches less interesting/boring? I think itīs hard to say... I donīt think Serena would treat Caroline nicely on the court, I think she would try to smash all of her weak shots...

I just canīt see why being BFFs can change their games... I remember when Hingis and Davenport were swapping places at number 1 and 2, they used to like each other very much and had intense matches and a rivalry, and they used to team up against the sisters! Nowadays thereīs no rivalry yet, but letīs wait..... But when a player dislikes the other we all have to agree that their matches have a special feeling

huh :o

I remember AO 2008, when irrelevant people like Jankovic, Sharapova, Ivanovic and Hantuchova reached the SF there(with some of them beating the sisters and Henin from an outdated era). People said they are revolutionary, new generations, whatever...

Look where these are at now!!

There's one last step, take over the majors.
Caro & Vika won IW, Miami.
Next is the majors.

It's more the old generation fading away. They're all way past their peak.

wait until vika produces this form for a whole year, and for more than one year... same goes for any other "queen" who proves anything.... what made previous generations great was the consistency of their top players on big stages for years and the rivalries they had...

plus...like it or not, people loved the controversy...because whether your hated or loved the controversial player, it brought ATTENTION...

did those players always play their best on the big stages? no...but you were guaranteed they would lay it all on the line...it was the RARE moment when they didn't

You are saying that Wozniacki sucks well? :hearts:

For the moment I still expect Clijsters and Serena, when back to win the big titles when they are there. Maybe 2012.

The problem is that most of these girls play a good tournament and three bad ones... Goerges had a pathetic start of the season and now she is in Top 20, Kvitova, current TOp 10 player, cannot win a challenger... just Azarenka is showing consistency and great skills, and that's why she's the best between them.
I would bet my money on Petkovic, a talented girl who fought very hard to arrive where she is now, Rezai, who is not just 2010 Madrid (just remind you Sydney and Eastbourne...) and Pavlyuchenkova, a good player who, if improve some things, can really be make the story.

Excuse me?

Goerges, Azarenka, Kvitova and Cibulkova all played great matches all week. Stop talking BS. :wavey:

Get back to me when they beat a fully fit / motivated Serena / Clijsters in slams.

Then you can't really say they are "stepping up", more like "feasting on scraps".

I thought both Vika & Petra looked like top 5 players and slam threats winning their Madrid semis.
Very impressive play by 21 year olds.
But same as Caro, they have to win majors to really stamp themselves in this era.

irrelevant people like Jankovic, Sharapova, Ivanovic
If those players are irrelevant, then women's tennis overall is irrelevant.

On other opinions: As Nadal/Federer shows, being friends doesn't diminish an on-court rivalry.

Pretty much.

They'll win big by default eventually.

But don't worry, plenty of laughs still to be had at the expense of the upcoming Generation Wack and Generation Slut.

Even if Wozniacki, Azarenka, Radwanska etc. all acted like bitches to each other in the press then that still wouldn't make their tennis appealing.

When they're using the scraps well to their advantage they're impostors, profitors, opportunists...

When they suck and do not do so... they're mental midgets... WTA sucks, needs to be saved... it's "how I miss XY to scrape these bitches !" song...

The majors baby, the majors...and besides Caro still owns all of them. So how much have they really stepped it up?

Seriously. Some people will never be satisfied. And some will never accept that a changing of the guard will happen. There will come a time a young player will never have to face a Williams sister or Clijisters because they'll be retired before they have the chance to.

Sure, that had to happen eventually.

The problem is that the elite players from the noughties all retired, or are about to do so, without having been superseded oncourt by younger players, in terms of direct matchups or even overall standard of play.

They can't help who they play in tournaments. I mean people here act like these young women are stealing the rankings/titles, from the elite players. No one smack a racquet into Serena's ankle, or Kim's, nor are they reponsible for Venus's injuries. They just do what they gotta do to win.

I have to disagree with the OP. Generation Suck is still going strong in terms of sucking. Today's SF between Na Li and Kvitova was one of the worst matches I have ever seen at that level. Players like Goerges and Kvitova winning on clay is not a sign of anyone stepping up.

I still have certain hopes set on Vika, although she really let me down back in mid-2009 when I thought she was primed for the big breakthrough, and I don't want to get burned again.

Are we ever going to see this again?

At her age Serena there is a chance that Serena will never return to her top form and Kim could retire at any moment.

Nobody is saying it's their fault. The problem is when they have faced the old guard in Slams none of them have really proven themselves in a convincing fashion ...

Right... but in the case they do meet, you can already feel the thing coming... Now it's you have to beat Rena to be relevant but when a young dog do beat her in a major, it will be Rena was sick, hurt coming from injury, can't move, can't serve, is done, irrelevant, her BF dumped her, "how is beating her nowadays glorious ?"...

Reasons why it makes no sense trying to dispute logic on GM... delusion at least keeps your mental sanity intact.
