Ivanovic thinks she can be No. 1 again

Former Roland Garros champion Ana Ivanovic (http://www.tennis.com/players/player_info.aspx?player_name=Ana+Ivanovic), who was defeated by Bethanie Mattek-Sands (http://www.tennis.com/players/player_info.aspx?player_name=Bethanie+Mattek-Sands) in Madrid, still believes she is making progress and can reach the top again. "My objectives still are to see myself up there," said the 17th-ranked Serbian. "Obviously in my head I’ll return to be No. 1. I'm training hard every day for it."—Matthew Cronin

She keeps repeating the same thing " I'm playing better and better, I'm progressing, I'm getting in form ... " for 2 years now, but where are the results ?

I wish Ana would stop setting her goals so high and just think of more realistic goals for the time being. Most people thought she had a great opportunity to be top 10 by now and a legitimate contender for the French Open about 4-5 months ago. Now she isn't even inside the top 20. I just want to see her back in top 10 soon, and winning matches consistently. Tired of her slumping. :o

Hmm....

Wozniacki can be number 1, why Ana can´t return to that position?? Someone must tell her that she needs to win more than 2 matches a tournament to achieve that, and stop losing first rounders to scrubs

I am not a fan of Ana or an apologist for her but to be fair she has had a lingering injury to deal with. It can't be easy to get any kind of momentum going when you keep retiring with the same injury. She did look to be getting herself together and building towards the top fifteen with a chance of cracking the top ten.

However, I have to say that I do not think that she has handled things very well. After she was first injured at Hopman Cup she should have taken at least a month off to let herself fully heal. Assuming that worked she would be in a much better position to do some damage during the clay season and maybe be a threat to go deep at Roland Garros. As it is she seems to keep rushing back onto the court before she should and the same injury keeps flaring up every three weeks or so.

I would have skipped AO and taken a month off too. Easier to say that now than back then, though. The injury has really messed with her season, which is a shame. But also losing to Kim after being up 5-1, 0-40 on Kim's serve with 5 match points, then losing to BMS after leading 6-0, 3-1 isn't helping things either. Those loses are killers, mentally.

I don't follow Ana too closely but didn't she retire or pull out of events three times with that injury? If so then surely after the second time she should have realised she needed more time to heal?

They are indeed.

Just better to think about winning titles first, then getting into the top 10 and taking it from there. Ivanovic needs to think more.

Marbella?

They never officially cited the reason why she pulled out of Marbella, just said she "had so many small things go wrong with my body this past month." Although, it could have been related to her abdominal injury.

What is she supposed to say? I suck and will never return to the high level that I was? Even if that is the case, if she thinks like that, then she'll never accomplish anything! Gosh, I just wish people on TF would just stop making such big deals out of every little sentence that comes out of a players mouth. It’s EVERYONE’S goal to be number one. Every player who ever picked up a racket.

ANA IVANOVIC.-
Q. I would like to ask Ana what her plans are from here to Roland Garros, she mentioned earlier to me that she was playing in Rome, so after Rome are you going to play anywhere else?
A. Yes, I am going to Rome in a couple of days and I still haven’t decided if I'm going to play something the week before Paris. I definitely feel I need to play a lot more matches, its been a lot of stopping and going, but I feel good about where my game is at the moment and I just need to go out there and compete more.

Q: I wanted to ask her, I've been reading these days her columns in 'Marca newspaper' and if she likes to write or if you have a diary?
A. Yes, sometimes its hard to write about the games, but I like to write and I think Madrid is a great city and this is a great week and lots of fun things are happening and also it's a great way to bring fans closer to the game and also show them what´s happening behind the scene a little bit and yes give them a bit of insight about we have been up to.

Q. I wanted to ask what objective do you have in your game for this season and if you hope to be ranked among the top 10, if you keep dreaming about being number one?
A. Definitely that is my goal and I do think I have quality and potential to do that and do feel good about taking advantage of the moment and I've been working very hard also on and off the court and to keep healthy and get my body stronger. But like I said, I feel like I just need a lot of matches and that’s what I've been lacking the last few years. It just hasn’t been automatic for me to compete and I'm very keen to get more matches and to get out there and put myself in a position to win big tournaments.

To be number one again, you need to start beating BMS and Clijsters when you have enormous leads, Ana

You also need to have a proper full time coach, not the adidas team. For someone as injury prone as you lately a team of physios/doctors wouldn't go astray either. Finally, if you REALLY want to be number one again, dearest Ana, go and get your self a sports psychologist FFS!

You've got a point, but this is also not the first time Ivanovic has said something completely out of touch with reality - as in realistically achievable in the foreseeable future. When she was at her slump low she was still saying she believed she had the tools to be #1 again - and it's fine to have belief but it just makes you look really, really dumb to say something like that after another 60 61 loss to a nobody.

Ivanovic ought to realise (or her handlers ought to realise and explain it to her) that the interviewers are just trying to get the next money quote for their slumping-Ivanovic-is-delusional storyline. It would be much better if she said something like "taking it step by step" and "aiming for the top 20 or top 10" AKA something within reach. Unless, of course, she actually likes to portray herself as dumb and delusional.

I thought after spending many years on the tour, she would be capable of answering questions from baiting journalists.

She took the number 1 rank from Pova after her win at RG.

It's funny because each time Pova became #1, it was not because she earned it, I mean, the previous #1 was injured/divorcing/retired

And no, Ana is not steady to be #1, I don't think she can win 2 slams per year, so in that case it would be difficult to become #1 again since Wozniacki plays A LOT of tournaments, and that Baby Anci often retires or withdraws or something because of an injury or whatever.

Baby Anci at #1 was a one off aberration. A combination of Justine retiring and Sharapova's injury. She'll never get back into top 5.

She can be no.1 again but not with her current setup she NEEDS Heinz Gunthard as her coach, be it part time, as main advisor or whatever but she needs him cause he understands the fundamentals of her game and knows how to fix the problems. When she called her coach in Rome the last time onto court he told her to hit the ball deeper and harder - hello she was missing every 2nd or 3rd shot as it was - no way in hell would Heinz have told her that, he would have gotten it into her head that she needs to rally and only go for her shots when they're on to be hit.

Oh please....shes sooo overrated...She hasn't done anything since her win in the FO....She's barely made 6 SFs in 3 years:help:
She isn't even in a slump...she has just passed her peak and now she is just an average R2/R3 player:lol:

Does she think losing in the first round in three of the last four Grand Slams gets her back to #1? :oh:

 You see she needs to stop making these kinds of comments, actions speaks better than words themselves, my dear and lovely Ana.

I'm not a fan of baby Anci but your fave hardly did a better job at number one :oh:

At least VIP actually won a slam even if it was mostly through good fortune :wavey:

The only way Anci can reach #1 is if she gets very good at Topspin 4.

What she said is true, she just has to get over her brain-injury.
