View Full Version : Only Ballbashers Left @ 2011 Madrid ... Preview of 2011 Roland Garros ???

Madrid is the 2nd biggest claycourt tournament in the world ... at the quarterfinal stage, we are left with Azarenka & Li (2 of the biggest bashers on the WTA today), newbie bashers Georges, Kvitova and Pavlychenkova, petite bashers Cibulkova and Mattek Sands, and other bashers Safarova & Gajdosova

already eliminated are non-bashers world #1 Wozniacki, her close associate Radwanska, clay court stalwart Jankovic, world #3 Zvonareva, the reigning Roland Garros champ Schiavone, CLAY-GOAT Stosur, WARSAW-GOAT Dulgheru, last year's semi-finalist Peer, recent MM champs Vinci & Brianti

does that mean that a ballbasher will be lifting the trophy at Roland Garros 2011 for the 1st time since Ivanovic did 3 years ago???

When Azarenka is the least ballbashing player left..... :tape:

The Madrid clay is super fast though , may as well be a red hard court. I think Rome will provide a better view.

Last year Rezai won Madrid. Hard to say what's happening, except we know Sam & Fran are not in the same form they were at RG 2010.
Its possible Nastia & Julia are uncomng stars. But they need to do it at majors, or often at Tier I's.

Azarenka not a ballbasher :spit: :tape:

Cibulkova ballbashed when she played Wozniacki in Sydney this year ... that is the last match I saw her play :p

Matteck-Sands is not a ballbasher you clueless idiot. Nor is Azaranka and Cibulkova.

Mattek was ballbashing like crazy in her match against Sexa today :wavey:

Mattek was ballbashing like crazy in her match against Sexa today :wavey:

She was not missing in the second set. She came forward at approriate times and hit drop shots and defensive slices. As an experienced doubles player you will often see Beth serve and volleying in singles. She is a willing and able volleyer on any surface.

Next.

Well Azarenka and Domi aren't retrievers.

The clay is fast here. It's not too shocking. As someone said, Rome will be better

From all I've heard Madrid plays a lot faster than RG.

Azarenka is a ballbasher (but a good one :p).

Cibulkova is not a ballbasher.

Domi and Mattek-Sands are not ball bashers, esp. Mattek-Sands clue in na-goat

you could even argue some of those other hard hitters are not ball bashers a la Maria/Davenport.

I think you're taking the ball basher term a little sensitively.

Let's rephrase the OP.

Madrid, one of the largest clay tournaments in the world, is not playing out the way clay tournaments usually do.
Some of the players who have made it through to the current rounds often turn to hitting the ball with pace from the baseline rather than working points, using relatively more spin and playing generally more moderate to defensively styled tennis.

Is this an anomaly due to the elevation in Madrid?

The altitude plays a huge difference. In Rome, we had Jankovic making it all the way to the final, and she made RG semis. Rome is now the best measure of how players will fair in Paris, which sucks because the clay in Rome even looks VERY different from the smooth texture of Roland Garros for the most part. Let's see how the top players do in Rome and maybe Bruxelles/Strasbourg where the conditions are more like RG and are actually outdoors.

The two that I mentioned? really?

I could see one arguing Cibulkova as a ball-basher, but Mattek-Sands... really?

According to the coach of Cibulkova, she is pure ball basher, but people in here know better it seems. Maybe Cibulkova's coach and Cibulkova herself should take advice from all the real pro's in here, instead of just work on what they think is the right thing?

I don't think so!

It looks like, that some aggressive baseliners found counter-strategies to sideline pushers. Julia Goerges, who won 12 of the last 14 points of her match to beat # 1 Caroline Wozniacki again, explained (http://www.wtatennis.com/news/20110505/goerges-ends-strong-beats-world-no1-again_2256076_2353679) the way she advanced this afternoon:

"I was just focused on playing my game. I hit some high balls to her backhand to get her out of her rhythm on that side, then I went for my shots. I waited for my chances and played my game really well. And when I was down 4-0 in the second set I told myself to keep it together for the third set and give everything. I did that pretty well at the end and served it out well."

It was obvious from the draw that this was a deep tournament.

Caro, Vera, Fran, Sam, Jelena, Marion, Sveta, Aga, Maria, Ana, Dani out

Vika, Na, Petra, Julia, Nastia, Domi, all in

Domi likes to take to the offensive but I wouldnt call her a ball basher. She hits deep in the court. There is a difference.

Azarenka is actually in the same category. Her strength is that when shes on she controls play by hitting deep in the court and sets up her points well. She doesnt always go for the outright winner.

Bethanie has a ton of variety. To call her a ballbasher would be incorrect as well regardless of how she played today. (I didnt see the match) She has a plan B she can go to.

Julia, Nastya, Na, Lucie, Jarmila and Petra are all absolutely ball bashers though.

Caro & Vera arent bashers, and they have better hard court results than clay.
It comes down to who is playing well this week.
