Influential People!
Just reading my TIME magazine this a.m. and see where Kim was included in the 100 people selected as the most influential people this year. I noticed that Kim was the only female of three athletes chosen the other two were one for cricket and one for soccer both males. So congratulations to Kim....she is in elite company:worship:...Pres. Obama and wife Michelle, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, Prince William and Kate Middletown along with scientists, actors, actresses, politians, musicians (Justin Bieber) anyway other celebrities in the some vocation wrote a piece about the chosen person, Kim's was written by Martina Navratilova and she wrote about her balancing sport, motherhood and victory with grace. How she retired in 2007 at 23 to get married and have a child...then her comeback winning two U.S. Open titles..she also said "on court Kim doesn't play any mind games. She doesn't throw tantrums or call for bathroom breaks to throw off her opponent. Kim just gets on with it". She mentioned she was injured at the moment but looked forward to her return and on the bright side, she's offering yet another lesson to fans "you should dance but when you do, dance carefully."

She's certainly a player I have a great deal of respect for, but I'm not sure she's one of the 100 most influential people worldwide. Maybe Serena or Sharapova?

I'm pretty sure Venus made the list when she made a public plea for equal prize money at Wimbledon and/or stood up for Shahar Peer in Dubai. Beyond that, tennis players don't really do much to deserve being called influential. I don't think they ever really have, not since Billie Jean King at least. To be honest, Nicole Pratt probably did more to advance the cause of women in sport than today's entire top 20 combined.

In reality, there are no athletes who are among the 100 most influential people worldwide. The impact of athletes on society beyond sport is minimal. But TIME is in the business of selling magazines, not being 100% accurate at discussing influence.

In fact, about half the time the choices should be listed as the most inspirational people in the world. Sure, some lady who works with a remote tribe in New Guinea is admirable and has an impact on those lives, but world wide? No.
